#5 of The Last Dragonboy

Chapter 5 of my Christian fantasy story, The Last Dragonboy!

I was up early this morning when I went downstairs to have breakfast. My parents were already downstairs. My father was reading the newspaper and my mom was drinking tea. I sat down at the table.

"Son, we saw what happened on the news. And your mother and I have something to tell you"

I didn't like the sound of that. Whenever they have something to tell me. It's never good news. "What? What is it?"

"You see...the reason you're not like the other humans is because...you're not our blood son. We adopted you..."

What? I was in deep shock. They said that I was their son. Their human son. They said they didn't believe in dragons. "But...but..."

"I know this is hard for you to take in, son. We don't know who left you here. But your parents must have been dragons. We don't know who the parents exactly are. But we put a protective circle around this house to keep anyone from taking you when you aren't ready..."

"You mean you've lied to me this whole time? How could you?!" I roared angrily and without a word, I turned around and stomped up to my room. I couldn't believe it...everything that I was told was a lie. I love dragons...but I never wanted to be one! I never wanted dragons as parents either! I flopped on my bed face down and screamed and cried into my pillow. I felt like my whole life changed and that my life was over.

I reread my Dragon Defenders novels to try to lift my spirits. When reading the latest novel again, the word "dragonboy" still haunted me. I thought this was just a graphic novel. But it's also for real. I still had to find Ignatius, Fenris, and Percival. Was the shadow dragon really my father? How would I bring peace between the Dragon Defenders and the shadow dragon? I had to get to the bottom of this...

I stared at Percival's illustrations. I looked at the white cross on his underbelly. Where have I seen that cross before? Where would I be most likely to find him? That's when it struck me. My parents used to drag me to church when I was a little kid. And on the top of the building was a cross. That's it! Percival is likely to be in the church!

I asked my parents for the address of their church. They were wondering why I had interest in going to church all of a sudden. I told them it was to find a dragon. I got in my car and drove straight there. Percival was my favorite of the good dragons. I loved his shiny golden scales and was fascinated by his cross. He was a true humble knight. Pretty ironic, since I'm not a religious guy. But something drew me to him...I wish I knew what it was...

I parked at the old church. I got out of my car and walked up to the front entrance. I felt nervous and intimidated. I had not been to church in ages. I gripped the door handles of the front door and I gulped nervously. Should I go in?

I slowly pulled open the door and went inside. I walked through the hallways. The windows had old classical religious pictures of God the Father and Jesus Christ. I reached the worship room. I looked around for a dragon.

"Hello?"

I heard my voice echo back to me. I was startled since I didn't realize this room was prone to echo. "I'm Ezekiel...I'm the dragonboy. Are there any dragons in here?"

"Shhh...not so loud. Yes, there is a dragon"

I turned around when I heard the echo of the other voice.

"Where are you?"

The voice didn't answer back. Instead, I heard organ music. I followed the sound of the music until I saw a dragon playing the organ. The dragon had golden scales and wore a red cape. When he finished playing, he turned around to face me. And I could see he had the white cross on his underbelly. "Are you...Percival?" I asked the gold dragon.

"Yes...I'm Percival. Holy light dragon of the Dragon Defenders. I heard you were looking for me, dragonboy..."

"Yes. Neptune saved me from a sea monster. And Isolda spoke to me. And now I found you...and I still have to find Ignatius and Fenris!"

"I see..." Percival said as he wrapped his cape around him. "Neptune and Isolda are faithful followers of God like me. I have to convince Ignatius and Fenris to follow Him too once we find them...do you follow God, dragonboy?"

"Me? No, I...don't care about God"

"You don't care at all? That's dangerous, dragonboy...".

Percival appeared to have a dissatisfied look on his face. What did I do wrong? "Dangerous? Why? Is it really that big a deal that I don't believe in God all that much? I thought he was just a legend."

"It is...God is imperative if you are to be the dragonboy to fulfill the prophecy. He's no myth and not just a legend. He's very real, dragonboy."

Ugh...he sounded like those old grumpy preachers that tried to push God on everyone. I rolled my eyes. "If he's real, then prove it. Give me a good reason to believe in God"

"There are at least two good reasons, dragonboy. But I'm going to ask you a question. Where do you think we came from? The universe, the earth, the stars, the creatures including us, everything"

"I don't know...I thought we just got here by ourselves as if we were always there. Through evolution or something...whatever it was I was taught in school"

"You can't believe everything that those public schools teach you, dragonboy...are you ready to hear the truth?"

"The Truth?"

"Yes...the gospel truth that is. Sit on that bench over there"

Percival pointed to a wooden bench. Rather than argue with a dragon, I decided to sit down and listen to his God talk.

"Here is the truth...In the very beginning was God. He always existed. And he exists as Father and Son and Holy Spirit. He created the whole universe and all the creatures of the earth in just six days. The first two humans created were Adam and Eve. They lived in the Garden of Eden. Everything was perfect. God commanded them not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. But they disobeyed. And the earth became cursed and humanity became sinful"

I blinked and tried to take it all in. I couldn't believe it. This was a truth that was hard to take in because of what I used to believe all my life. "Okay...and what happened next?"

"What happened next is that God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to earth. He was sent down to die to atone for the sins of humanity. And it is only by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior that you can have your sins forgiven..."

"And what's the big deal if I don't have my sins forgiven?"

'If you don't have your sins forgiven, you can't go to heaven. Without your sins forgiven, you spend eternity in hell. A place of suffering. You don't want to go there, do you?"

My eyes widened when he mentioned heaven and hell. I thought those were just fairy stories. But now that I have seen fantasy become real in front of me, I felt like I couldn't risk going to hell. I felt scared. I felt convicted. I never felt this way before. There was no way around it. "Of course not! I want to go to heaven!"

"Then come with me, so that you can accept Jesus Christ as your Lord. And be baptized as well"

"Baptized?"

"It's a sacrament that all believers must go through. It's simple really"

I felt so overwhelmed. I couldn't believe that I was going to become a new person. A Christian. A follower of Christ. I used to doubt so much but I had faith. A faith regained. Percival led me into a pool, waist deep.

"Now dragonboy, do you accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior? And do you believe he died for your sins and rose again and that he will return to the earth a second time?"

I answered yes to every question that Percival asked me. "Then in that case dragonboy, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit"

Percival dunked me underwater and then lifted me right up. The water felt cold and refreshing. And as I was dunked down and lifted up, it felt like my sins were washed away. I felt like a brand new boy, and I would never be the same again. There was no turning back.

"Now then dragonboy...we've got a quest ahead of us" Percival opened a window. "We must go find Ignatius and Fenris and get them on God's side. Then, you will come with all of us to the dragon realm to fulfill the prophecy. You must help us make peace with the shadow dragon, and there is no time to lose!". Percival lowered his neck. "Climb on, dragonboy. With my fast fight, we'll find them in no time".

I smiled and climbed onto Percival's back and held on tightly. "I'm ready to go. And by the way...you're my best friend" I smiled and rubbed his horns.

"Aww...I love you too, dragonboy. Now hold on tight!"

Percival took off upwards towards the open window and flew out, into the open skies. With two more Dragon Defenders left to find, I truly felt like I was on an epic quest. An epic adventure. I finally put my sadness behind me and felt excited for what would happen on our adventure together. And with God now on my side, I had strength. It felt great to believe in something. And I was no longer afraid...
