#4 of Mello - Short Stories

While it can be read by itself, this short story is technically the fourth in a series based around the first-person present perspective of Mello, my main ferret fursona; feel free to read older entries via my Mello stories folder if you want. Both positive and negative feedback are appreciated!

Although Glass and I have been together for almost two years now, this short story canonically takes place over a month after Iced Coffee, Mello's last short story, where they both first met at a café. Taking place near the end of summer, the two boyfriends decide to spend part of a sunny Saturday browsing through a farmers market, hoping to buy fruit and other goodies. This story is shorter than my earlier ones, only being four pages in total, but I hope that you enjoy reading it, and thanks a freaking lot if you do end up giving it a look!

Additional thanks go to Glass the Wolf and The Stickman for peer review while I was editing! I appreciate their motivation too.

The thumbnail is cropped from a shaded version of a reference sheet that Combat Raccoon drew me.

Except for Glass, all other characters in this story are my own and belong to me.

Summer's getting closer and closer to ending; the days are still long, and it's certainly hot enough that I don't need to wear anything more than my forest-green gym shorts; I could do without the slight sweat on my lightly gray front fur, but I'll take that over the sadness-inducing frost any day. No clouds in the sky, my only ways of limiting how the sunlight hits me are from shade by the sides of some product stands, or walking near some taller animals who casually look around the farmers market; it's in a parking lot that's about three or four blocks away from the café that I regularly go to. Glass, my cute wolf boyfriend of around a month now, lately encourages me to spend more time outside to get more sunlight and fresh air, but I still habitually look at my phone.

Today's Saturday, and we decided to casually explore around parts of town, but he's walking on his own for a bit, and I'm not really sure what he wants to buy. I have a decent amount of money myself, not much more than for paying rent and bills, but my apartment's running low on food and I... well, I really want tons of fruit. My fluffy ears pick up casual conversation from other critters walking around me, not any mammals or scaly creatures who I know; Karen would've been the first avian who I saw today, but she's too busy with final exams to join us, so it's understandable.

All four toes on each of my charcoal-gray feet feel the warm yet smooth rock that makes up the private road, no vehicles present for now. I'm not looking forward to later seasons where I'll need to start wearing longer pants; I just find jeans and such very uncomfortable, and I'd rather feel more air against the darker fur on my thighs and below. Peering around for Glass, I'm not able to find him within the crowd; I can usually spot his light-blue hair and jungle-like attire easily enough.

The pleasant scent of recently ripened strawberries gradually invades my pinkish nostrils, and I can't help but smile some; I imagine sticking my fangs into a whole basket of them, but I'll wait for Glass. In the meantime, I pull out my phone, grasp its metal ends, and decide to text Robin, wanting to see how the friendly wolverine's doing; he mentioned starting a full-time job recently?

Mello - Hey Robin, how's your day going - 1:37 PM

Mello - Everything good? - 1:37 PM

I stare downward, standing somewhere to the side near an alley, not really aware of my surroundings. Patiently, I wait for a reply before wiping sweat off my charcoal-shaded mask, also brushing my dark-brown hair; at least the color makes it less noticeable, but I could really use some water. No messages back yet, so I pace around before refreshing my screen and texting again.

Mello - Glass and I got lots of time if ya wanna hang later - 1:40 PM

Free time, I mean; wish you could edit texts. Shouldn't bother me so much... Is Robin okay?

Robin - Busy - 1:40 PM

Robin - Trying help customer - 1:40 PM

Robin - Can't talk, later - 1:41 PM

Mello - Sorry, good luck. - 1:41 PM

...I wasn't being rude, was I? Think I was... Course he's in the middle of working; please don't get in trouble because of me. Wait, I'm worrying too much; it's fine. I step around some, looking at the dozen or so stands that're set up: Fresh fruit, picked vegetables, I smell some scented soaps... I'm still nervous, happens a bunch, but it's normal; it'll pass... I straighten my shorts, right paw's shaking some, but I step toward the crowd- Lemme just pull my phone out again; I'm sure I was-

"Hey Mello!" My ears pick up Glass' pleasant voice, and I suddenly feel a soothing warmness as my boyfriend's fluffy arms wrap around me. Not able to help myself, I cheekily smile and turn around to face him. "There's a really cool doormat further down you might like! It's got an autumn theme and I know you like seasonal decorations." I adjust myself and hug Glass back. He tells me how it's got a red leaf design, and it sounds like it'd be really cute for the apartment. There's some gardening tools for sale too, but Glass is the only one with a yard, so we agree to hold off on that.

Feeling better, I continue the conversation: "Y-yeah, that'd look nice! Still wanna get lots of fruit though." Glass excitedly interjects with wanting some batches of carrots too. "I mean, we should get lots of stuff! I like the organic crops they have, and I got a small raise and stuff to help." Not really sure why I'm bringing work into this, but we end up talking about ways to decorate the apartment, which Glass comes to a lot now, especially with things to fill the fridge with; I think he wants to host a picnic soon. I could also help him plan meetings for his college's tech club, which he's been more active in lately; he even used a 3D printer in it to make some cute gaming mascots.

Casually holding hands, we walk around the parking lot together, and I can't help but blush when Glass looks at me with his hazel-colored eyes at one point... heh... "Don't remember where this farm's from," Glass says with a fairly enthusiastic voice, "but the people seem really nice. Got to talk to them earlier, and I think they're a new business! We should buy a lot from them." I hesitate for a bit, but agree as long as it's all around thirty or so dollars. The confident cutie and I check out the individual stalls, starting with a crafting table; I don't craft, but Glass is probably interested.

There's plenty of parts for making sculptures, including cleanly cut wood, some balls of yarn, glue from a brand that I don't recognize, hardware tools... "Anything you need for your workshop?" I ask Glass since construction projects only happen at his house; can't let myself get into trouble with the apartment owners from noise complaints or some other silliness... Glass studies a particular type of wood that one of the salesmen has, but I'm not sure what he needs it for. I whisper into his right ear: "Whatcha thinking of making, floof?" He turns around and tells me that he's not sure, but he kind of wants to make a birdhouse. "That's really cute; I can pay if you want!" He giggles some and assures me that it's probably not the best time for it, but thanks me for the offer.

We pass a bunch of other groups, most of them probably in their early twenties like us, but there are some regulars from the café who I recognize: A dark-clawed otter who's usually on his laptop is to the right of me, a jittery fox who I faintly remember seeing with a loud table of jokesters is nearby, and I think I can spot... Actually, I'm not sure who that is; I thought that I saw Leo for a second, but they're another skunk who's a little wider and has jogging attire on... I can't make out any more specifics in the crowd, and it's not like they're the only skunk here either. Glass and I pass by a random pottery tent, running by a friendly-looking polar bear who actively tries to grab our attention; I'm not really interested in being pressured. "Let's go look for food; my porch can barely hold anything anyway," I casually utter toward Glass, "and I'm getting pretty hungry too." Glass gets really excited all of a sudden, and I see his tail shake. I can't help but form a smile as we start moving faster; I really wanna boop his snoot for how silly he's being, but I'll do that later.

Hungry as I am though, my nose does pick up an extremely alluring cucumber scent, one that I'd love to have for tonight's shower; I might wash again when I get home actually. I like being really clean, and it helps me feel comfortable and concentrate more easily; yeah, I take at least two a day, but that's not that weird, is it? Thinking to myself, and realizing that I also want more shampoo, I hear Glass loudly sniff around before we head toward another stand. There's a bunch of plastic-wrapped bars across a table, it being led by a blonde-furred, brown-haired, and red-dressed cat, although she's distracted with processing a customer's credit card. Even though it's almost two o'clock now, there's still a surprising amount of people walking around, and my perked ears pick up lots of casual conversation about current events. "Aah, Mello, there's strawberry flavors," Glass joyfully says while pointing to a bunch of pinkish bars. "I wanna smell them all and buy a bunch!"

I reply, feeling like we're supposed to ask first; I'm pretty sure we are, and my hands let go as I start moving a bit to ask the owner if she- Glass immediately runs over to the table and very closely sniffs the bars, to which I just... Okay, I guess that's fine, right? He's really cute and silly, and that's a lot of why I like him, but he's like- Actually, I wanna buy us some soap; I like seeing him happy! "Hee hee, strawberry's the best one," Glass excitedly shares, seeming hyper despite not having any coffee earlier. "Can we get it?" I nod, but I still ask the feline owner about testing the smells regardless, feeling like we probably ignored some rules, yet Glass assures me that it's fine.

Gazing around the plastic table, it being propped up by a series of metallic legs and spreading around multiple sides of the owner, I look at the other products and spend a few minutes deciding what to buy, eventually collecting two tall bottles of strawberry shampoo, a sample size of blueberry conditioner, and two bars of cucumber soap; these are so fresh-looking, and I can't wait to use them later! I hope that Glass enjoys whatever he's smelling, which definitely seems to be the case as I stare at his grinning face; he soon buys himself strawberry conditioner and soap. The courteous saleswoman is also really nice to us, smiling as we buy products and waving as we ultimately have to start walking away; we're definitely returning here next month, that's for sure!

There's still a large crowd present, and I think my sweat's starting to be a little more noticeable... My lighter fur feels wet and I'm a little concerned. The sun is gradually covered, and it feels a bit cooler, but I'm not sure how long that'll last. Nonetheless, Glass and I still have several areas to look at, and both of us decide to split up to find ourselves some fresh produce that we'll each like. "We should surprise each other!" Glass cheerfully yelps, and I'm inclined to agree with the fun proposal. "I've got some money on me still, and it'll be lots of fun!" I happily nod, and I'd love to present him with something, probably a small cherry pie, a food that I remember him devouring at the café a week or two ago... I think that's right; I'm not great with times. "See ya in a bit, cutie," I hear Glass adorably say, and I shake in excitement as he gently rubs five claws along my right shoulder before walking away... I'm so glad I met him; he's extremely funny, great to play games with, technologically smart, and so much fun to hang out with! I still need to be more creative and less physically lazy around him, but we're keeping ourselves fairly busy; he's met my friends too.

Minutes pass, and I admittedly get tempted to surf my phone some, so I walk away onto a mostly grassy area, the recently mowed ground feeling very comfortable under my paws. I look up recent tweets, something I tend to do habitually, but there's not much new besides current events- Aah, Glass posted a cute sketch that he drew related to Crash Bandicoot featuring himself earlier, which is extremely cheesy, but I'm giving it a favorite! April seems to have the day off and is hanging at a lake with some other friends; that was an hour ago, and it looks like they had a pleasant picnic. Uh, another friend is... Did I mean to follow them? Not with this account... I tug my phone away.

I've done a pretty good job at naturally tuning out the pedestrian noises, so I stare in the distance, taking in green trees and wish-granting dandelions, also hoping that we're out late enough tonight to see the fireflies, which I love watching despite not being a fan of most wild bugs. In the distance is the café where I usually try to relax- Random thought, but I should bring my laptop there next time, maybe put some notes together for another game review for my blog; I've written a few short entries in the last month, _Tricky Towers_being my latest after playing it with Glass so frequently; the views were only in the single digits, but I enjoy writing these and will keep trying to improve.

Halfway toward the café, which is open, I'm able to make out a tall and largely blue husky, but I can't see his face; he's wearing a light-green shirt, gray shorts, and the bottom half of his tail's some shade of white. He's carrying a tote bag in his right hand, the ends of his arms matching the black coloring of the bottom third or so of his legs; I don't think I've seen him before, but he's too distant to tell. I turn my head away as clouds move away from the sun, trying to shade my vision.

Not long after, I suddenly spot some steam in front of me, and, before I have time to think, my nostrils are invaded by a savory cherry scent. I look around and find a pie stand, so I'll definitely buy one; there's also a bunch of fruit not that further down, and the thought of hoarding a bunch of blackberries for my fridge is way too tempting to resist... Glass likes cooking too, so maybe we could make a blackberry pie of our own later? In any case, I decide to turn around and buy the freshest cherry one available; I pay the rabbit owner and start walking around to find Glass again... Actually, I majorly want the berries first, so I run off to buy several plastic containers with the rest of the money that's on me; I haven't had lunch either, so I'm not passing up lots of delicious fruit.

Holding the cherry pie with my left hand, which also has the rest of the berries bagged, I tear open a berry container with my other and start munching several blackberries at once- Mm, they're really good and juicy, and I like them being crunchy too. They're so filling and amazing and I love eating these, and I know that I should save the rest for later, but they're too delicious, and the tart taste is so appealing. My lips feel messy as I keep eating more, and I'm really happy and want to-

"Hey boof, starting without me?" I jump as Glass surprises me, but the wolf has strawberries all over his face, the rest being in boxes carried by him. Embarrassed, I smile and show him the ripe pie I bought. "Aah, thanks! Eee, I'm so excited!" The goof nods his head and offers me one of the strawberry cartons he ended up getting, which looks super fresh! I can't help but feel overjoyed as he stands in front of me, his lips covered with juice, and me... really wanting to do something. "They're really fresh and you'd probably like-" Feeling way too freaking happy around him, I quickly wrap my hands around his head, angle myself, and kiss him, tasting combined juices from our lips... I like him so much... I let go, smiling like crazy, and he giggles as I see his cheeks redden.
