"Alright. We wait until you know for sure", he replied. "Then we tell my parents and try to smooth it over with yours."

"I'd do anything for you, Dan", he answered. And they hung up their phones.

Then Laura came home. She saw them watching TV, said hello, and headed out back to help her husband.

Soon, they could smell the scent of steaks cooking on the grill, and went out back to join Marlin's parents. Laura had set the table, so they sat at their places and wait for John to serve them. John cut up their steaks into small chunks for them and put the plates before them.

Together, they all ate.

As John and Laura cleaned up, Marlin said "Mom, dad, can we talk on the back porch for awhile?"

"Oh dear God", said Laura. "You're both sixteen!"

"I'm sorry", Dan said, "I went into heat and before I knew it...."

"You went into heat?!", John and Laura exclaimed at the same time.

Dan nodded her head. "I didn't know it at first...", she began, but John cut her off. "Are you sure?!", John asked.

"What are you going to do now, Marlin", asked John.

"That's a big responsibility, Marlin", John said. Then he looked at Dan. "Have you considered getting an abortion?", he asked. "I'll pay for it."

"Yes", said Dan, "and I'm not going to kill our puppies." She looked over at Marlin, and licked him on the muzzle.

Marlins parents put their hands in each others. "Marlin, Dan, do you two love each other?", Laura asked.

"Yes", they both replied in unison.

Marlin's parents sighed. "Stay right here", John said. "Your mother and I have to talk". And Marlin's parents went inside.

"Well, that didn't go too badly", Dan said.

"I'm probably going to catch hell for it when your not around", Marlin replied.

Dan rolled over onto her back, paws in the air. "So how do you think my parents are going to take it?", she asked.

Marlin sighed. "I still think they're going to shoot me", he answered.

Finally, John and Laura came back. Laura was the first to speak. "Dan, we support your decision to have Marlin's puppies", she said.

Dan waged her tail.

"Marlin", said John, "you are in big trouble. But we'll talk about that later. Right now, we have to explain this to the Brown's. I already called them and told them we where coming by. So let's get in the car, kids."

Marlin and Dan followed the Peterson's out to their SUV, and hoped in when John opened the door for them. John started up the car, and the four of then headed through the neighborhood to Dan's place.

The pulled up into Dan's parents driveway, and got out of the car. Then they walked up to the front door, and rang the doorbell.

Dan's mother, Julia, answered the door. "Oh, come on in!", she invited them in, then called out over her shoulder "Eric, the Peterson's are here!"

Julia led them into the living-room, where Eric was sitting in a recliner, watching HBO. He got up with a groan and went to shake John's hand. "So what's this all about?", he asked.

"Eric, Julia", John said. "There's no easy way to say this, so I'm just going to say it. My son Marlin got your daughter Dan pregnant."

Eric stared at him, and Julia stared at Dan. "Oh my God", she said, "your pregnant?"

"Yeah", Dan replied. "I'm two weeks along."

Eric tuned to look at her. "Are you sure?", he asked.

"Yeah dad. I went through morning sickness, and now I have a baby bump", she replied.

Eric sighed, putting his hands to his face and shaking his head. "I can't fucking believe this", he moaned.

Dan's mother Julia walked up to her, and rubbed the fur on her head. "What are going to do?", she asked.

"Well mom, I'm going to have them", Dan replied. "I'm not getting an abortion."

"What about school?!", Eric exploded. "How are you going to continue you classes...."

"I'm going to stay in school, Dad! I just need a few days for the birth is all!", Dan shot back. Then in a much lower tone, "and someone to help me take care of the puppies."

Julia hugged Dan. "I'll be here for you, Dan. Having children is a wonderful thing...."

Meanwhile, Eric was glaring at Marlin. "Exactly how did this happen?", he asked.

"Well, Mr. Brown", Marlin replied, "Dan went into heat, and neither of us knew it."

"So you just screwed her?", Eric shot back.

"Hey, that's not fair!", John interrupted.

"Yeah, dad!", Dan shouted. "I love him!"

All eyes turned to Dan.

"And I'm going to have our puppies, okay?", she added.

Eric whistled, but the other adults smiled.

"Well, I hope you can pay for it, because I'm not paying for any God-damned vet bills!", Eric shouted.

Dan stared at him. "It's okay", John said. "I'll pay the medical bills".

"You better", Eric replied. "It was you son that did this...."

Julia spoke up. "Dan, I'll take you down to the welfare office and get you put on the government WIC program tomorrow. I want you eating better.", she said.

"Right Mom", Dan replied. She wagged her tail a few times.

There where few words spoken after that, and eventually Marlin and the Peterson's went home, and Dan and the Browns went to their rooms and slept.
