#3 of Various Information

Well, I finally got something done. It's a small miracle. So here's a basic overview of the Solar Republic, which is the central government in the new Peacekeepers story and how they fit into the greater setting.

The Solar Republic

"We have fought off the most dangerous enemy we could imagine. They came here, expecting an easy victory, and we pushed them out. But in this victory, we found traitorous elements within our midst. The corporations have worked against us, and the Tesgno willingly submitted to the invaders. These wrongs will be corrected. The weakness of the Alliance allowed these elements to almost bring the entire sector to ruin under the control of an alien state. The new Republic will prove, once more, that Terrans will rule in this sector and ensure that no corporation or foreign state will prey on our people again." - President Simon Ganesh

Long live the Republic, long live Humanity. Forever may the nation prosper under the guiding hand of the President, and forever may they lead the people toward a greater tomorrow. For centuries the Colonial Alliance stood as a beacon of liberty in the darkness of space, but its light faded as the great corporations of its time wore it down and threated the very core beliefs of its government. As most hope was lost, there came the Great Interstellar War, as the Terran historians have come to call it. Without warning, a powerful external entity, now identified as the Greater Haromian Empire, struck to the very heart of the Alliance. Through Terran perseverance, humanity repelled the invaders with considerably little cost.

Now well aware of the external threats of the galaxy, the Solar Republic was formed to unify the Sol Sector, fast track colonization and exploration efforts, and to bring down the influence of the corporations and dissenting factions within the former Colonial Alliance. To accomplish this, the military branches of the Alliance - the Navy and the Marine Corps - were reformed into a modern naval force and a larger and more mobile ground force. With the formation of the Republic in late 2550, a new age of war was ushered in as the Republic expanded its reach and influence across the stars.

A young nation built on the foundations of the old, with the full backing of the Nations of Earth, the Solar Republic has quickly grown in influence and size as well as military might. What was once merely a representative of human government has become the sector's monolithic state as systems saw autonomy stripped and local governments replaced with new governors, new structures, and new protections and rights under the Republic. The centralization of power under the Republic, accomplished in a matter of years, has caused unrest across its frontier systems, though most unrest is subdued with the deployment of a few ships and little more than a battalion of Peacekeepers.

In the centralization, the Republic has seized control of, and at least partially nationalized, the corporations of the sector that refused to bend to their authority. Omniwatch, the largest and most powerful of the corporations, were first to resist the Republic and thus were first to be taken over and had its leadership arrested. With the fall of Omniwatch, other corporations submitted to the Republic's authority.

The birth of the Republic and its growth with no resistance has revitalized nationalist movements, most of which are various degrees of human supremacist. The most extreme advocate for the subjugation of both the Brakians and Tesgno and limiting the rights of the augmented Terrans. More moderate groups push for the non-human species to be prevented from gaining citizenship but accepting the augmented Terrans as fully human if slightly different.

In all, the Republic is widely seen as the last best hope for the Sol Sector following the war with the Greater Haromian Empire. Even with its flaws and fledgling government, as well as the unrest on the newly occupied worlds, the Republic stands tall as the beacon of liberty for Terrans, Brakians, and Tesgno alike. The few Haromian natives that were captured have seen themselves integrated into the new Republic, pardoned and given a new chance at life. Whatever happens, the next few decades will either make or break democratic traditions in the Sol Sector.

Section II: Government

The Solar Republic, in keeping with the constitution of the Colonial Alliance, is a bicameral representative democracy. As the head of state and government, the President of the Republic is elected to four-year terms in a general election, and the constitution doesn't currently have a limit on terms. Among the domestic powers of the President, they are empowered to select their cabinet and have extensive executive authority with little real oversight. Constitutionally the President answers to the Senate first but in practice the President is given a lot of leeway.

The current President, Simon Ganesh, was also president of the Colonial Alliance and is the official founder of the Republic. He's widely respected as the longest serving President of the Alliance, holding the office for the last 18 years before the formation of the Solar Republic. With the formation of the Republic and carrying over most of the traditions and most of the constitution, he has another two years before the next election.

Laws dictating who can run for president were carried over from the Colonial Alliance and are largely considered to be primitive by the newly integrated alien races. First and foremost, all candidates for president must be human, which incidentally would allow the few Haromians in the Republic to run for office. Beyond that, citizenship must be held though a candidate need not be born in the Republic. In order to ensure qualifications for the office, a minimum age of 30 years old was likewise carried over. The requirement to have served in the legislature was scrapped however. Vice Presidential candidates have to meet all the same requirements.

The legislature is made up of two houses; the Senate and the Colonial Assembly. The Colonial Assembly is made up of thousands of representatives from across the Republic, apportioned by population to every star system, settled world, and station with a minimum of one seat. The Assembly members are elected to two-year terms and are required to be at least 25 years of age and citizens. There are no species restrictions for the Assembly and most of the time it's a fair mix of Terrans, Brakians, and Tesgno. However with the inclusion of Earth, the Assembly is now almost entirely human.

The Senate proper is made up of a few dozen senators representing the major star systems and highly developed worlds, with five senators granted to each such system and world. Notably this results in a highly Terran-aligned Senate as most of the developed worlds in the Republic are human dominated. Like the Assembly, citizenship is required but the minimum age is raised to 30 as many Senators in the Alliance eventually saw themselves running for President and are arguably the best fit to do so. Outside the few dozen senators that represent the major worlds, single senators are apportioned for the other star systems and in all add about another two dozen senators to the house. All senators are elected on four year terms or can be appointed by the governor.

Currently the Republic is relatively decentralized when it comes to most system governance. Systems with only stations and outposts aren't generally assigned a governor and is only loosely governed to ensure compliance with federal law. The major star systems, particularly Sol, Alpha Centauri, Epsilon Eridani, Procyon, and Chara are assigned planetary governors with a system governor over them to govern local policy, but they ultimately answer to the President.

Section III: Society

Through the turbulent 21stcentury and into the space age, Terran society has shifted and changed over the centuries. As a result, distinct differences between new settlers from Earth and those that have been in space for generations have appeared. The major systems likewise have gulfs in culture based on the original settlers of the planet. From planet to planet, even station to station, cultural and architectural norms will vary heavily. The addition of the Brakians and Tesgno have introduced new, alien cultures into the Republic's mainstream.

If anything can be called a 'dominant' culture it would be the general grouping of 'Spacer' cultures such as Alpha Centauri, Epsilon Eridani, and, to some extent, Martian. They can all be classified as liberal cultures with emphasis on civil liberties including freedom of speech, thought, expression, religion, and assembly as well as general non-interference in the actions of the lone individual beyond upholding the laws of the world. All the Spacer cultures share highly individualistic values, placing the single person and worker above the great masses of Earth's dictatorships.

With all the civil liberties provided to them, the people have likewise embraced the ideas of the free press and President Ganesh has publicly called it absolutely essential to a thriving democracy. Information is rarely restricted and never done so by the government. This of course has had some issues when journalistic integrity is abandoned in favor of getting more attention from the people, but it is a system that generally works as intended.

The standard of living varies greatly across the Republic, with a nigh utopian lifestyle on Mars as most activity is fully automated and people live in almost post-scarcity conditions. On the other major worlds like Alpha Centauri or Epsilon Eridani, the great cities enjoy an extremely high standard of living fueled by resources coming in from outside the systems. Outside the major systems however, living standards can fluctuate with, in general, the systems closer to the major worlds being better off then the far-flung outposts. The alien worlds of Braka Prime and Great Home are exceptions to this rule as they are less developed or advanced than most Terran worlds.

Religion in the Republic has seen changes as Terrans moved into space. Most of the old faiths of Earth remain influential in space to various degrees, with Catholicism sitting as the most numerous of the religions for a variety of reasons. Beyond the old Terran faiths, the Cult of Terra - a hardline human supremacist faith - has seen some growth since the end of the Great Interstellar War. Outside the Terran faiths, the Brakians and Tesgno universally follow their own faiths or lack thereof.

Section IV: Military

In the decades before the Great Interstellar War the Alliance possessed a fleet of only around 200 ships to protect mainly Sol, Alpha Centauri, and Epsilon Eridani with a few patrols into other systems considered to be a part of the Colonial Alliance. This navy was generally outclassed by corporate forces, most notably Omniwatch, and generally wasn't used for anything more than a sign that the government had its own interests and would fight for them. Most often the corporations still ignored these shows of force or actively resisted, including at the Battle of Braka where the Alliance Navy lost 40% of its naval strength.

While still beaten down and limited in size, the fleet was able to mount an effective resistance against the Haromian Empire at Sol due in large part to the Ambassador Class Dreadnoughts and their spinal guns. In the aftermath of the war, it became evident that the Alliance needed reform and a modern military. After several months of rebuilding and reworking the armed forces, the newly formed Republic struck against the corporations by raiding command centers and corporate headquarters, crippling the corporations and seizing all assets.

In all, the Republic currently fields approximately two million Peacekeepers, another 20 million Army troops, and has just over 6,000 warships after five years of construction across all worlds with drydocks. The military surge has made the Republic the unquestionable military power in the Sol Sector in large part due to the fact there are no alien nations around it that are even close to the size of the Republic. Arguably the Republic is on the same military level as, if far smaller than, the Avlocraic Confederacy; one of the three superpowers of the galaxy.

Despite the large size, a tradition of warfare reaching back to the earliest days of human history has made the Republican Armed Forces among the most efficient militaries in the galaxy. Capable of moving and supplying forces across its space with little delay, the Republic can, if not outnumber, outmaneuver all other superpowers in the galaxy. Their particular technological strengths have likewise shown that the technological edge of the most powerful nations may still fall against Terran ingenuity.

Overview

The Solar Republic is a fledging interstellar state in the wake of the Great Interstellar War. The nation has been rated as a tertiary power - as they are far stronger than most of the non-aligned states but below the vassals and protectorates of the superpowers - by the Galactic Council though no formal relations exist as the Sol Sector rests deep in Primitive Space. Due to the Great Interstellar War, the government rejected an envoy of the Council after they repelled the Haromians. There have been no further attempts at working with the Republic.

The future looks bright for the Republic however. With Earth, Mars, and the colonies truly unified beneath a single banner and alien races in the immediate vicinity being subjugated to add to the nation, with no real competitors in the space around them, as well as a stable government, the Solar Republic has a true chance to make its way in the galaxy. The newly militaristic outlook guarantees that whenever another war comes to the sector, humanity will be prepared for it.

For the rest of the galaxy, other than the Greater Haromian Empire, they view the Republic with disdain and upstarts that won't last against the greater powers once they truly work their way closer to the rest of the galaxy. The Empire, despite losing in its war against them, has respect for a fellow human species and one that bested them in combat. If anything may happen, the Solar Republic may see the protection of the Empire despite the defeat they were handed.

The Republic and humanity stands on the edge of a glorious dawn. Revitalized and empowered, the Republic is the last true beacon of liberty in the galaxy. Small and fledgling, but with great potential, the coming centuries may see the Republic rise to become a contender against the superpowers.
