Chapter One - Bad Luck

Another day in the worst place in Gul City. Just below the sunny surface was the darker side of the coin. It was considered to be a safe place for people of 'his' kind. However there was no peace amongst themselves. Every day battles were fought for scraps of food and morsels of water. Anything that was discarded from the surface was up for grabs by any one else with worse luck.

Tabor, the name given to him self, which means bad luck. Tabor, from the start could tell he was different from the other Rovuresu, which means un loved. The others could tell right away as well. Many of the Rovuresu named them selves something great or clever some of them even made up their own names and meanings. The idealing of it was that they would one day live up to the expectations of their nick names. But it never seamed to work out that way. Once a Rovuresu, always a Rovuresu, and Tabor knew this.

"Why would some one be given a name they can never be?" Tabor muttered to himself.

A voice came from behind "Because it gives them a hope for getting out of the life that they live"

Tabor took a brief look behind him only turning his head far enough to see his friend Samantha, meaning listener. The name was given to her by Tabor, because Samantha was always listening to Tabor.

"But there is no hope for something that is unwilling to change" Tabor growled in disgust as he watched the other Rovuresu fight amongst each other as they often did.

"That is true, but still we mustn't add salt to flesh wounds" Samantha rested a hand on Tabor's shoulder.

Tabor turned and looked at his friend again. From the angle he was at, sitting on the ground holding his knee's in. With just a small beam of light from the sun leaking into the sewers he saw Samantha for what seemed like the first time.

The Collie in her really shown through with her luscious, long wavy, light and dark brown mixed hair. It was easy to tell she was a mix of something else given that her height wasn't short like most other Collie breeds.

Her eyes, how they appeared to glow in this lighting. The edges of her eyes were dark grey rings that fled directly into sea blue color. They almost appeared to have their own light illuminating off them.

She had beautiful, thick lashes, and her fur was close trimmed and well kept up.

She wore a jacket put together of old denim jean. She had put it together herself but there were many flaws in the jacket. For example none of the patches were even, some of them had wholes in them and it only covered up her breasts. Her stomach was thin, a little too thin from a lack of food, but it wasn't enough to make her un attractive.

She was also wearing her shorts that she had found on a clothes line in an alley just the other day. They were made of a very thick material. They were a dark color with a plaid design. She was aware it was wrong to steal, but the shorts looked so nice and covered her legs more than anything she ever wore in her life. It was the first and only time Samantha had ever stolen from anyone.

Tabor would have liked to stare at her more, admiring her natural beauty, but something had knocked him in the head. He let out a small muffled sound and looked in the general direction while rubbing his head. He looked up, through a small sewer drain he could see the surface world, and that was it. he looked down, down in a shallow part of the water he saw something glimmer.

Picking it out of the water and just enough light to make it shimmer, he examined it.

"Isn't that a butte?" Samantha exclaimed to Tabor. "And who says your bad luck?"

Tabor ignored her comment.

"It looks like a piece of a necklace" he said in awe.

The object was gold, with green trimmings. It was in the shape of a heart with the engravings "R.I.P My Love". It was a beautiful piece, but it left a lump in Tabor's throat.

"Hey Tabor look!" Samantha pointed out three small hinges on the left side of the heart.

"Think you can open it?"

"I dunno, I can try" Tabor responded as he pressed a nail in the creases of the other side.

And with a little twisting it popped open! There was a picture and a piece of paper inside.

Tabor picked up the picture but his hands were so shaky from his find that it slipped out and fell into the water.

Tabor and Samantha both scrambled to find it. There was already a bunch of trash floating through the water it was hard to really decipher one thing from another.

"I Found It!" Samantha shouted with glee

"Lemme see it!" Tabor said as he snatched it from her hand.

He took one good look.

"This isn't it" he exclaimed

"Wha-?"

"See look, it's a trading card" he said in anger

"oh.." Samantha said with disappointment hanging under her breathe.

Something cough Tabor's eye in the distance.

"There it is!" he shouted as he scampered off to retrieve it

When he caught up with it, he quickly stepped on it, preventing it from moving when he went to go grab it. He bent down and lifted is hind paw to extract the photo from under his foot. He held it to the light.

"Bad luck Tabor..." he sang to himself.

The photo was smudged and hard to make out. From what Tabor could tell it was a picture of some one from the surface. He could tell because the Rovuresu weren't even allowed to take pictures. Aside from that, whoever was in the picture they had a nice bleach frosted fur. Beyond that though there was nothing that could be made out. On the back of the photo was a name. Nasrin 'wild rose'. Tabor looked back at the picture and could roughly see the details of a young female.

"Can I see?" said Samantha.

Tabor handed the picture over as he began to pry the heart back open. He was extra careful on opening it, the last thing he wanted to do is ruin what ever was written on the piece of paper. He opened it up and tried reading it. However it was no use, it was impossible to read through the slim beams of light that managed to make their way.

Tabor scuffed up his nose "We gotta go to the surface, I cant read here"

"Okay follow me!" Samantha exclaimed as she took Tabor by the hand and started running up stream of the tunnel.

As they passed through beams of light the heart scattered the beams into a thousand pieces. It glittered so brilliantly that Tabor couldn't keep his eyes off it.

"SHIT!" Tabor yelped as he came towering down.

He plopped right into the water, scattering garbage and dirty water everywhere.

"Are you alright?" huffed Samantha as he dragged him to his feet.

"Yeah I'm fine...does it seem darker in here to you?" Tabor asked as he looked around.

True this was a darker part of the tunnel, but something seemed off.

"The heart!" exclaimed Samantha

Tabor looked to is paw. It was full of air.

"No!!!" he shouted as he went to his knees and began feeling around for the heart.

He moved forward and ran into something.

"Looking for this??"

Tabor looked up to find a large dark bear. His fur was all tattered and messy, and he smelt worse than the sewers themselves. What caught Tabors eye however, was a small metallic shape in the bear's paw.

"Who are you?! Give it back!" demanded Tabor as he jumped for the golden heart.

"Not so fast!" said the bear as he knocked Tabor onto his back.

Samantha jumped over Tabor and landed a good hard kick right in the side of the bear's head, but it didn't do much in face Samantha probably got hurt worse.

The bear took Samantha by the leg and tossed her on the other side of him. Then he walked over to Tabor and pressed his massive hind paw onto Tabor's chest, enabling him from running away or fighting back.

"You want it back? Your gonna have to give me something in return" he chuckled as his yellow eyes pierced into Tabor's.

"Li-Like what?!" gasped Tabor

"Let me give you an idea..."

Keep an eye out for the next chapter, where things get really Heated ;)
