#16 of Wayward Scale

Finally, the gang is able to buy a starship. On top of that, revelations are brought up...

James opened his eyes and sat up. He was in a hospital bed wearing a gown, and he could see a plate between his eyes. He remembered the events leading up to this; He had become a female Dasite, a being that somewhat resemble an armadillo. He lifted a hand to see his thin wrist and fingers, which were dark brown, a contrast of the rest of his hand. "Is it over already? What time is it?"

Silence. Suddenly, he could hear a scream from another room. "Is anyone there?"

Without warning, the door opened to reveal Takeo. He had an expression that said that he had just been kicked in the crotch, although that did not happen. "Did it happen already?"

"Hai, hai it did. I got 60 thousand outta that!"

James scooted up and gasped, "You're serious?"

"Hai, hai I am."

Then, a doctor entered the room and asked, "Are you ready, Scale?"

"You mean, I haven't gone through it yet?"

"No, you have not. Nurse!"

The doctor looked at Takeo and asked, "Okuda, can we have some privacy?"

"Hai!"

After Takeo left, the doctor looked back at James and said, "Now Scale, we were going to operate while you slept, but we were just too busy, and we are running low on sedatives."

James just watched as the nurse entered. "Was there something you need, Doctor?"

"Oh," replied the doctor, "just something to help production of eggs. I will need this one to ah, artificially go into heat, so she could produce more eggs."

The nurse sighed and said,"Hang on doc."

She went closer to James after taking a small needle and injected his arm. At first, nothing happened. Then, James' mind wandered to a male Dasite, and no matter what he tried, the image stuck. "Now," said the doctor, "please refrain from touching yourself until after the procedure."

James could not shake off the vision of pressing foreheads with the male Dasite. The image left, however, when he began to feel the prodding and pulling. The nurse noticed it happening and increased the dosage of the scent with a machine. While the scent was administered, the image remained. It tortured the Dracosith and Terran noses, but it served as a backup sedative for a female Dasite. "Sorry boys," said the nurse, "we didn't want her to hit the doc for taking eggs."

The doctor turned and shut the door. Sure enough, his vision changed to feeding young Dasites. Meanwhile, the doctor looked at the nurse and asked, "So nurse, what properties do you suppose their milk has?"

"We're talking about an armored creature. The milk helps the babies get stronger, but soon the babies' shell gets stronger and heavier."

"I wonder what it would do to a Dracosith, or a Drifter."

The Drifters the doctor referred to were what those from earth called the grays. "Probably thicker skin and scales to resist bullets. Drifters, probably some kind of armor."

"Intriguing. Oh, it appears the process is done."

The nurse deactivated the odor machine, and they both waited until the effects wore off. James sat up hunched over waiting for his head to clear. "How long was that?"

"Exactly an hour."

"It felt longer."

He noticed the eggs and Dasite milk packed in boxes and bottles and asked, "Did I make all that?"

"Yes."

"Wow."

James marveled at all the bottles of milk and still blood covered eggs. "Luckily, we gave you medicine to heal anything that is hurt in the process."

"So, how much should this fetch?"

"Right here."

He handed a bill to James, who nearly fainted. "So I'm guessing this is worth a fortune?"

"At least enough to start a fleet or buy a lifeless planet."

James hit himself in the head and said, "I should've done this a while ago!"

The doctor took James' counter and attached it to another one. It took several minutes for it to finish, and when it did, James retrieved it, stood up and went out into the hall. He found Takeo and said, "Well, that does it for me."

"Same here."

"Did you make milk?"

"No, why would I?"

"Well, I did."

"How you make milk?"

"They released a musk."

"Eww!"

James showed him the appraisal bill for what the eggs and milk could fetch, andhis eyes widened. "I thought my sixty grand was enough!"

"So did I."

"Well, if ever need be, I be set for a year or so."

"I won't need to work for a while with this."

"Neither shall I."

"Wait till the others see this!"

* * * * *

James went around the bunkhouse showing everyone the appraisal bill. "If I'd have known that donating eggs paid this much, I'd have done it first thing! Now, let's go buy a ship!"

"Hai!"

As Takeo headed to the door, still undressed, James snapped his fingers and said, "After we get dressed!"

"Never!"

James sighed and went back outside. He went back to the lab before the hangar, opened the door and sat on one of the gurneys. "James Scale, original hybrid, please."

He watched as the doctor attached a needle to a vial. He held his breath as one of them approached and stuck the needle in his arm. After the injection, he stood up and watched as his hands grew fatter. He felt pressure and sat up. He looked over his shoulder to see his plates detaching and his wings grow out. When he stood up, he felt his gender switch.

He saw Emily come in and, before taking off his hospital gown, said, "Oh, hi. What're you doing here?"

"To get you. Takeo got thrown in the pokey."

"Excuse me?"

"Takeo got arrested for public nudity."

James sighed and rolled his eyes before opening a locker that contained his clothes. "How much did they give for bail?"

"I don't know yet."

"Hopefully, not too much."

As he pulled his pants on and stuck his arms through his shirt, he continued, "They have no reason to put it at an obscenely high price, and we're just about to get a ship."

"Yeah, maybe it's over night. Normally is for this offense."

"We could give some clothes for bail."

"That we can. Give him-her a dress."

James snickered and clamped his snout shut. "Isn't that What he wore when we met him?"

"It looked like one."

"Agreed. Why so big though? We should ask than."

"Yeah. Until then, to the hangar."

Emily ran there, and James bolted after. They arrived quick enough to find that the ship they had their eyes on was being polished on the sides."There it is!"

James marched over to the Dracosith overseeing and whipped out his counter. "We're interested in this ship, the one shaped like a comet."

"Thirty grand."

He handed over his counter, which at that point had exceeded thirty thousand credits. He watched as the transaction took place occasionally glancing up at the ship. The hull was still a metallic gray, but he had an idea for what could be done with it. As they handed it back, he asked, "Is there anything you recommend for this specific model or ship?"

They gave him a list, and he said, "Alright, thank you."

"You're welcome. Here's your paper work."

As the seller handed over some documents, a soldier marched up to them and said, "Private Scale, we've got something you might be interested in."

"That'd probably be captain Scale now. What's up?"

"There's been sightings of a station containing a bunch of Coyans holding a Dracosith, a silver one."

"Blue eyes, young, nervous demeanor?"

"How'd you know?"

"That sounds like my other son."

Emily looked at him with one eyebrow raised, "Other son?"

"Astar. I had three before you and the rest of your clutch."

"Oh!"

"Sounds like a good time to test this ship!"

"Oh yes, but we need the crew."

"Leave that to me."
