#2 of Shadows on The ICE

Chapter 2 - Lonely?

Ginatra awoke to something he missed, another warm body beside him, then the previous days events came back, I'm alone he realized, who's beside me? He glanced over his shoulder, that artic fox was bold, Ginatra thought. His instincts once again urged him to be aggressive, but he ignored them and laid his head down on his paws and soon was asleep once again.

Ginatra woke once again this time the fox was gone, surprisingly he was disappointed, he gathered his paws beneath him and padded out. His belly growled at him, and Ginatra decided it was time for food. He calmly searched out a weak spot in the ice, noticing the fox's tail sticking out from behind a rock, not very good at hiding is he, Ginatra thought, pounding a hole through the ice. He cautiously kept his shadow off the water and readied his paw for a kill, suddenly, he flashed his paw out and a fish was suddenly flopping on the ice. Ginatra caught four more, purposely catching two more than he'd eat, hoping to catch a companion as well as a meal. He killed each fish in turn before settling down to fill his growling stomach he was glad to be eating fish again, love the fishy taste. He thought as he bites through the scales, as he grabbed for a second fish he noted out of the corner of his eye the fox creeping up. Soon he finished of that fish as well and had grabbed his third and last, as he bit in to the last one he noticed the fox siting, waiting patiently, but the longing glinting in its eyes as stared at a fish, betrayed its true thoughts. Finished Ginatra pushed the other two fish towards the fox and crouched to clean the blood from his paws, and watched pleased as it came, slowly cautiously and grabbed a fish and crouched to eat. Ginatra new that he hadn't won it over yet by the twitching of its ears, it may be eating but it was alert. He new he'd made progress at least, at least he wasn't alone anymore.

As the fox was finishing it began to snow, lifting his snout to the air Ginatra realized a storm was coming and he leaped to his paws and the fox leaped back, startled as Ginatra padded, quickly, back to the cave. Soon the snow got stronger and the fox followed, slowly and cautiously. And sat at the entrance to the cave, the wind howled and scratched at the entrance to the cave as the fox watched Ginatra pad to the center of the cave and lay down to groom, there'd be no going out today and he was still tired from the trek across the tundra. The fox finally worked up the courage and padded into the cave, curling up a few pawsteps from Ginatra, progress Ginatra thought, progress.

Ginatra awoke in a dark forest, he could see a black shadow, it was small with yellow eyes and rounded horns rose from its head, then suddenly he was on the ice. The shadow had been joined by more and was carrying a black shard of ice they all stabbed their shards into the ice turning it black, they continued to infect the ice until Ginatra was standing on a massive expanse of black ice. He reared up and slammed his paws onto the ice breaking it and plunging himself into an ocean of sticky black liquid that flowed like blood, slowly. Ginatra was drowning in it, sinking to its sticky black depths!

Ginatra leaped to his paws, dream, just a dream he thought and curled back up, before he fell asleep he once again felt the warm body of the fox pressed against his fur. Ginatra awoke to daylight streaming in, the blizzard had ended the outside was bleached white once more and there was a wall of snow reaching up half the height of the cave entrance. The fox was still asleep as Ginatra scrambled to his paws and pushed through the wall of snow at the entrance, he needed to decide his next destination. He also needed to grab some food if he was hungry, he could hunt, but the fox wasn't strong enough to break through the ice much less fish. Ginatra couldn't imagine how hungry it was so he decided to hunt for the both of them, he padded out towards the hole he'd made, it had frozen in the blizzard. Once again, he reared up and was about ta smash through the ice when suddenly he feared he'd fall through as well and end up in his nightmare, but he shook away the thought and smashed through the ice anyway, and proceeded to catch some fish.

Feriyaki got to his paws his tail flicked nervously, he'd been following the young bear since he first saw him in the forest, and this was the first time it had woken before him. The good thing was he was still alive, so the bear didn't see him as prey, but if he was right about the bear the danger would pay off. With this final thought Feriyaki padded out into the open, through the bear shaped hole in the snow, and found it devouring some fish, it had left some fish a few pawsteps from the pile he was currently eating. Feriyaki was wary but his hunger won out and soon he was crouched beside the pile vigorously devouring his meal. He was so focused on the fish he didn't see the bear come up on him till it was leaning against him. Feriyaki was startled, but realizing he wasn't being attacked, continued eating. Finished he sat up and leaned against the bear.

Chapter 3 - Unexpected conversation

"You don't live around here bear, "The fox barked, "Were do you come from?"

"Uh," The Ginatra replied, startled, "No, I don't." He glanced down and grunted, in surprise, "how can you speak the tongue of bear?"

"I've had practice," The fox replied, "By the way, my names Feriyaki."

"I'm Ginatra." He replied, still amazed.

"well I've got a journey to continue," Ginatra grunted, "follow me if you wish, I don't mind, but I'm not staying here."

"Oh, neither am I," Feriyaki replied, "Our destinies are linked, so we might as well travel together." He then made a point to scramble to his paws, shake the snow off and head towards the copse of trees in the distance. "Come on," he called, "Destiny awaits."

"Ugh," Ginatra grunted Playfully, "Liked him better when he didn't talk." Then they set off onto the ice.

Feriyaki padded after Ginatra the sun was climbing the sky and even though the terrain didn't seem to change, every now and again he'd see a shrub or rock something surviving the relentless thrashing of the Icy winds and constant storms, as they continued to climb the ridge the cliff a few pawsteps away. Suddenly he noticed a smell, territorial marker to be exact, and by the reek of it, wolf, bad very bad, a clash with wolves could be deadly here! Just then the smell increased in strength tremendously and a warm body slammed into him teeth met into his scruff and he rolled with the wolf on his back. The wolf went over the edge first. but as Feriyaki was falling another set of jaws gripped his scruff and his fall halted, and as he watched the wolf plummet it yowled in terror. He heard it shriek once then a crush of bone as it hit the rocks below, then his paws were on the ground again and the wolfs were slinking away whimpering. Feriyaki suddenly realized he was shivering, and every time he closed his eyes he saw the drop before him steep and deadly. Then he felt warmth as Ginatra leaned against him, and whispered in his ear

"Our destinies are intertwined, remember," he grunted, in amusement, "can't have you jumping off a cliff now."

"yeah," Feriyaki grunted softly, "Thanks, you saved my life!"

"Come let's get going." Ginatra Grunted, "Before they come back." Feriyaki nodded his head in response, still shaken up, as he scrambled to his paws and followed Ginatra as they continued they're Journey.

The sun had reached its peak and they didn't seem any closer to the copse of trees in the distance, and Feriyaki was getting hungry, he was tired of the unchanging environment.

"We should stop somewhere soon," He barked, "I'm hungry and getting tired, you must feel the same."

"True." Ginatra Responded, stopping to Glancing up at the sun, then into the distance "We will stop soon." Then he padded off once again, and Feriyaki was forced to follow, this bear was his life line, he would starve without him and definitely gone off that cliff without him as well, Feriyaki shook the dark thought away and bounded forward to catch up with Ginatra. Who was padding away towards a snowdrift clawed at by the icy winds, then he remembered how most bears know how to make snow caves and was suddenly anxious. Feriyaki didn't want to get berried in the snow, hope he knows how to build a stable one, he thought fearfully.

Ginatra had successfully built the cave and caught some food by sun down, and They now sat at the entrance finishing of the carcass of a young seal.

"Never had seal before." Feriyaki barked, appreciatively, "Its great!"

"Yeah," Ginatra grunted, "I've missed seal." He grunted wistfully, looking up at the star, slowly climbing from the darkening night sky.

"Get some sleep," He Grunted, suddenly, glancing at Feriyaki once again, "We'll make it to those trees tomorrow." Then he padded into the cave, followed by Feriyaki, who curled up beside him happy to share warmth in the cold greedy environment.
