#12 of Wayward Scale

Just another parenting episode.

James scratched his head while staring at the yingling laying on the table. How was he supposed to fit a diaper around that tail? It didn't help that she was flopping all over the table, pounding her tail and kicking her legs. He sighed, approached her and grabbed the diaper cloth he had laid nearby.

She screamed bloody murder and tried to get away. Due to this, he picked her up and covered her crotch with the cloth. When he did that, she started hitting with her clawed stick arms. "No hitting! No hitting!"

Some yinglets ran in, and he looked at them and said, "Everyzhing's fine, just surprised her."

He wrapped the cloth around her legs and used a pin to hold it together. He turned her around and found that he missed her rear. So, he took the diaper off. He changed the area of the diaper so that it was over her tail instead of around her legs.

Then, they found that her leg was stuck, and she screamed. He let go of part of the cloth and took her leg. Then, he replaced the flap and applied the pin. After that, he set her down and sat on the table.

"Guys, you still over zhere?"

"Yes."

"What do you feed a yingling?"

"Shucked clams, or oysters,"

"Any of you got any?"

"No."

James sighed, picked up the yingling and took her to a storage area. "Now, where do zhey keep clams," he asked himself.

Eventually, he came across a box of clams. He took one of them and handed it to the yingling. However, her shelltooth was not formed well enough, for she tried to open the clam. and broke the tip of her tooth off. She screamed, and James opened her mouth for a look. The tooth was now nothing more than a small stump. "Oh no, oh no."

While she cried, James picked her up and held her against his chest, her head almost getting stuck in his breasts. "Uh, don't cry! Oh, what do I do, what do I do," James muttered while pacing still holding the screaming yingling.

While pacing, he saw a vial that said 'numb root.' He snatched it from the shelf, took some of the salve from the vial and slathered it over her tooth. "Better?"

When she nodded, he said, "Note to self, never feed a baby yinglet a whole mollusk."

After that, James broke the clam open and gave it to the yingling. As she swallowed it, he sighed and collapsed. "Next, I have to worry about schooling on top of nourishment and hygiene."

He picked her up and went outside. Then, he stopped by one of the other yinglets and asked, "How long does it take for a yinglet to grow up?"

"Eight. And we breed at 10."

"Zhat should be enough time for schooling."

"Schooling?"

"Yeah."

"What's zhat?"

"Pretty much learning zhings."

"Oh, we never do zhat!"

"Why not?"

"Because none of us can read."

"Oh, really?"

"Yes!"

"Well zhen, I know where to start."

"Where?"

"Reading."

"Why?"

"So she could properly understand everyzhing."

"Why?"

"How far would she get if she couldn't read?"

"She can has eggs."

Instead of responding, James turned and headed toward the gate. He altered how he held her before leaving the enclave. Then, James spun around and went back in. "Almost forgot zhe farewells! Well guys, we're off to Sulfur."

"Fine!"

"Anyone got anyzhing to say?"

"No."

"Well zhen, as zhe Germans said, auf wiedersehen!"

James waved and passed through the gate. Without the protection of the enclave, they were left to the elements. Their next challenge was the desert, their task to follow the road to Fort Sulfur. Unfortunately, the road had suffered heavy amounts of decay to the point where all that was left were several chunks of cement. However, this did not sway James Scale into giving up.

Their best bet, James figured, was to travel by night. He looked to the horizon to check the time. He could see the sun setting over the distant mountain. He shrugged and started the trek across the road.

He jumped out of the way and ran after the car. However, he lost it after two miles but there was a bus stop at a gas station. As soon as he found the remote gas station, he went inside. There, he found a pay phone, but he didn't have any money.

He set the yingling down and looked at some magazines. He took one and flipped through it. Within were pictures of yinglets in scanty clothing and suggestive poses. He raised an eyebrow upon seeing this. He put it back when he found some in drag and looked for the yingling.

He found her asleep on the floor, and he took her in his arms, went up to the counter and waited. The clerk looked down and asked, "Need a place to sleep?"

"Yes, how did you know?"

"I can tell. You can use the spare room in the back."

"Zhank you."

"You're welcome. There also bathroom back there."

"Good."

With that, James headed to the back room. He set the yingling down and laid down with her as she awoke. Then, she squeaked, "Hungo!"

"What was tha-Oh."

"You need to eat?"

She nodded, and James scoured the room for something a baby yinglet could eat. He couldn't find anything, so he brought her to his chest and felt for nipples. All that he could feel was fur. "Really nature?"

He sighed and went back out to the store. There, across from the hall, was a case full of oysters. He took the case and brought it to the back. He took one out and tore it open with his tooth.

He gave the half with the most meat to the yingling, and she licked up the meat. While she licked it up, James opened another one and sucked on it. He heard her whimpering, and he sighed and gave it to her. As she ate that, he opened another one and sucked on it.

Zhis should work for now."

* * * * *

They woke up first thing in the morning to continue their journey across the Dracosith wilderness. Along the way, a long bus drove by, and James waved his arms to try to flag the bus. When they didn't stop, he threw up his arms and walked out into the road. That was when the bus stopped. He ran up to the door and asked, "Are you headed to Fort Sulfur?"

"Close to it, why?"

"Well, me and my yingling are trying to get zhere."

"Why?"

"I was wondering if zhey have a tutoring system zhere."

"Possibly. Get in."

With that, he went back to where the yingling was, swept her off her feet and carried her on the bus and sat in the back. Once they neared the fort, James pressed a button next to the window. As soon as the bus stopped, James took the yingling up and went outside. He went up to the gate and said, James Scale."

"Come in."

With the yingling in his arms, he entered fort Sulfur, turned to the guard and asked, "You don't happen to know if zhere's a tutoring program, do you?"

"We might."

"Where could I sign zhis one up?"

"In the main office."

One of the guards left his post, and James followed him to the main office. He saw the guard point at the facility and went up to the door. It opened automatically, and he went inside and set the yingling down. A figure at the desk looked up and called, "Yes?"

"I'd like zhis one signed up for tutoring."

"Can do, just sign this!"

He approached the desk and took a pen. The person handed some papers over, and he sat down and read while writing. Once he finished writing, he went back to the desk and handed the sheets back. "Thank you," said the figure, "just give it a week or two."

"Alright."

"Also, do you need a place to stay?"

"Yes."

"Let me talk to my boss," the figure said before pressing a button and producing a hologram, which they began talking with in a hushed voice. While they were speaking, James loomed over the yingling. "Still need to give you a name."

"Ro?"

He glanced at a stack of magazines off to the side. He went over to the corner, sat down and looked at the covers of the magazines. He took one and flipped through it. There was all kinds of stuff, but he could not read the type. It all looked like Chinese to him.

Then, as he looked, he could see some in English. He read as much of that section as he could. There, he found a name, a name that belonged to a local scientist. An oddly Anglo name for an alien. "Emilia?"

When he said the name, the yingling stopped and looked at him. He looked back at her and said, "Zhis should work."
