#3 of Wayward Scale

Welcome to Dracosith.

A sudden jolt and boom awoke James. He brushed some of his red hair away from his blue eyes and looked through the window to see another starship firing at them. He looked at one of the black and red jumpsuit clad Dracosith soldiers as he barked, "Hey scav, over here! The ship won't hold up!"

He saw that Snow Dove was already in another starship connected to the one James was still in. He jumped off his seat after unbuckling and ran to the other ship on his thin yinglet legs. The dragon soldier stepped over him as the door shut and barked, "Full speed ahead!"

The shape shifter jumped out in full gear after the enemy, but one of the Dracosith soldiers went after her shouting, "Don't!"

She looked at him and called out, "Let me sacrifice myself!"

"Why?"

"You guys are damaged, go home! Think about your people, you can risk loosing one, not all!"

"We were about to book it!"

She didn't seem to listen. She torpedoed towards the other ship as the soldier flew towards her. Then, the door shut while they were outside, and the pilot said, "Full speed ahead."

"Uh," said James, "aren't we forgetting anyzhing? Zhere are some of our guys out zhere!"

"You want us to go after them? They basically said leave!"

James was about to speak when he saw the stars appear to become noodles and felt himself being pinned against the wall. Unlike the last time he went into hyperspace, this time, his ears popped as if he had reached high altitude and went down. Then, just like that, he was released from the pressure. He looked through a window to see that they were approaching a planet, one that resembled mars.

"Is zhat Dracosizh?"

"No other."

With that, James went to the door and sat down to wait for the ship to land. A while passed beforehand. Soon, James started to nod off when he felt a kick. He jumped through the now open door and planted his face into the dust.

He felt one of the crew members land on top of him. "So hot!" said a high pitched voice. He felt relief from the weight as they got off and stood up. Past the soldiers, he could see a series of old towers in bad condition with holes in the walls.

"This place looks like shit!"

"Tell me about it," replied James.

"Well," added a soldier, "it's home."

James looked to see a creature covered in feathers, about as tall as two yinglets stacked on top of one another. "Uh," said the feathered creature, "why am I here again?"

"Ask the captain."

"Well, he flew out after the enemy!"

"Oh yeah."

"-And is most likely dead," stated the feathered one.

"Well Scale, I hear the king wants to talk to you face to face."

"Really? A king wants to talk to me?"

"That's what I heard," answered the soldier.

"What zhe," grunted James as some soldiers began to herd him along. "You need to go, now," one stated. "Alright, alright!" replied James. "Which way?"

James saw the soldier point and followed the finger in the direction they were pointing in. He saw a building, one in much better shape than the rest. It appeared to be a hall of sorts, like the old Norse mead halls he heard of. He stopped at the door and pushed it open.

He saw a crowd of Dracosith muttering amongst themselves and cleared his throat. "James Scale, from MORPH."

James looked at the one they were gesturing at, the tallest of them. "Ah, good. Everyone out, I would like to speak to this one alone."

James watched as most of the Dracosith walked all around him, some stepping over him. Then, the feathered one flew in through a window. "I said alone!" bellowed the king.

The feathered one squawked and ran outside. "As you can see, we Dracosith are a tall people, a strong people," stated the king. "But, we cannot sneak through enemy lines. That is where you come in. There is a group of yinglets near fort Sulfur, I want you to go in there, gain their trust. I told their mother that I will be sending someone, and that someone is you, Scale."

"When do I start?"

"You may start now. Dismissed."

With that, James turned and left the hall. He saw a vehicle of some sort and approached it. As he came closer to the door, it opened to invite him inside. He jumped inside and looked around the back of the front seat as the driver asked, "Where to?"

"The yinglets."

"Right away!"

James stared through the window as the vehicle drove through the dilapidated streets of the city. Gradually, the buildings became more sparse, until they reached a gate. The driver stopped there for a couple minutes to allow guards to inspect the vehicle. "Don't mind the yinglet in back, it's with the king!"

"In that case," said one of the guards, "go ahead."

They drove out into a seemingly endless wasteland keeping to a weak road. Finally, the vehicle stopped, and the door opened. James jumped outside and feasted his eyes on what appeared to be some kind of primitive fort. He took a deep breath and approached the door. He opened the door only to be met with a spear aimed at his chin. The yinglet holding it was constantly shaking his hands and alternating due to the spikes on the shaft.

"Wait," said another yinglet. The one aiming a spear at him dropped his weapon and took one look before gasping, "Yinglady!" and dragging James inside.

James looked back as he was dragged to the largest hut in the fort.Next thing James knew, he was thrown inside the hut. He looked back as the door shut, then spun around when he heard footsteps. "Hello," he called in a sheepish tone.

After a moment of silence, he saw a yinglet push the curtain aside and approach. He gulped a lump from his throat and asked, "Who's in charge here?"

"Me!"

"Really?"

"Yes, really."

Upon closer inspection, James could see that this yinglet did appear older than the rest. "I'm zhe one zhe Dracosizh king sent."

"I see!"

"So, what all will I be doing?"

"Getting under me!"

"What?"

That was when he figured out that it was a male. James screeched with surprise from being jumped and pinned down like he was. Nothing could be heard from outside due to James being gagged. Then, someone did hear gurgling and raised a part of their eyebrow. They had no way to know what was going on inside.

Night fell before everything settled down inside. James was sitting in a clear puddle. He looked up to see the bird yet again. He stood up and stretched his arms up. "You okay?"

"I guess."

"Well, let's get ya home!"

"Home? What home?"

"Base."

"Oh."

"Yes. Personally, I'd rather be in trees myself."

"Well, I guess I'll just get a nest of some kind, or stuffed in a cabinet."

"Same with me."

James sighed and rested his chin on the bird's shoulder. "I thought my neck was long.," commented the bird.

"What?"

The bird pointed, and James shrugged and shut his eyes. By the time they had claimed a room, James had fallen asleep. The bird passed out on a high point, while James laid on the floor.
