#2 of The Observer Stories

It continues. This is the conversation of the meeting the Observer has with Dr. Laserbeard.

Something is going on! The player seems caught up in something they likely aren't bargaining for!

Let's hope they are more skilled than they let on.

This is the Observer. The man behind the mask. Most might assume I am someone in particular. However, I am good at covering my tracks and leaving enough of a deceitful trail to trick those who would want to know who I am. I can be multiple people easily enough. I was told I am a natural at it. People are usually shallow one way or another, so emulating anyone can be simple.

Speaking of masks, that is how most of my meetings goes. I always wear both a physical and emotional mask. No one can know who I am or what I do. It goes without saying but I will state, once again, people die if they know. Because I usually end up cleaning them. In any case, I have had my meeting with Dr. Laserbeard. Needless to say, it did have an interesting and noteworthy event happen. I will leave a written transcript of what happened.

===== Observer: "Welcome, ladies and gentlemen of this counsel. You may call me Mr. Observer. I am here to observe what transpires this day. I have asked that most present to this meeting keep a mask. It is dangerous to know too much about who is who. Just you knowing what I call myself might be enough to get you killed. So please keep in mind, what you say here stays here. Understood?"

Laserbeard: "I was not told we would be having a Halloween party! I would have brought something more interesting myself."

Nameless Counsel #1: "Your face is a tech mystery in of itself. You are the star of this show in that regard. Besides that, you also are the subject of this meeting as well."

Observer: "Yes. We are here to discuss your new position as Security Overseer. There's a lot of work involved, and from what you tell us you plan to make rather... particular changes."

Laserbeard: "I want us to test your pet experiments, or whatever you call them. This will not only add security but allow them to be tested. If they can break past, then they can break into anything."

Nameless Counsel #1: "I hardly see the need. Our facility and inner prison is on the tightest lockdown with no exception except to place prisoners in, no one else out. Automated process makes this easily possible."

Nameless Counsel #2: "I agree. It seems you are just more interested in testing our 'pets' than we are."

Laserbeard: "Okay, maybe you have a point. I find them fascinating. But do know that it is in your interest to have them be tested by the end of Q3. I have heard that you got some interesting offers. Big numbers that would make most governments have very pleasant dreams! Even billionaires would weep at the chance."

Nameless Counsel #1: "THAT, is need to know!"

Nameless Counsel #2: "You could die for just knowing-"

Observer: "Enough! I have brought him into this project. I know full well what he is capable of. He has earned my trust in this project. This will remove two birds with one stone."

Nameless Counsel #1: "He needs to earn our trust!"

Nameless Counsel #2: "Yes! You can't expect us to just see someone new and simply allow him to poke at our operation."

Nameless Counsel #3: "If I may interject, I think the Observer would know if there's any problem."

Observer: "Quite so! I am aware of much of what goes on. Firstly, I will approve the condition of their testing with this system. However, we will need some normal samples. Specifically just people without any real ability."

Laserbeard: "Have you seen the person I brought in yesterday? Let's just say they will be one such sample."

Nameless Counsel #1: "And what qualifies them?"

Laserbeard: "Their chances of success should be 0%."

Nameless Counsel #1: "That is your idea of qualification?"

Laserbeard: "I should specify that they do have some training and experience. However, this will push the above average human's ability to its breaking point."

Nameless Counsel #2: "And what would happen if they DO succeed?"

Laserbeard: "You won't see that."

Nameless Counsel #1: *scoffs* "You are just so damn sure of yourself!"

Laserbeard: "Within an error of 0.001% of failure. I am here for a reason. I am the best."

Observer: "I have seen his results. They are very impressive results, which is why he was chosen. It wasn't only my observation that has noticed this."

Nameless Counsel #3: "I take it you have a training area planned?"

Laserbeard: "Already done. That much was done before the whole system was polished. I have some more work and modifications set to be done. And the security can even be set with a simple slider of possibility. Chances of death will be quite high."

Nameless Counsel #1: "You better not accidently kill too many experiments."

Laserbeard: "Ugh, you think I am not aware of that? I told you I made the slider for a reason! They get past the easier setting, then they aim higher. Unless they are morons not capable of seeing what is clearly above their capability. This is your job. Not mine."

Observer: "Actually it will be. We will leave this up to you entirely. Do not disappoint. You won't have the chance to work elsewhere otherwise."

Laserbeard: *laughs* "Yeah, yeah, cleaning and firing. I got it! You better pay up if you wish for my services to continue. It is hazardous enough without the threats."

Nameless Counsel #2: "Too afraid now? I thought you were so fearless!"

Laserbeard: "Fearlessness leads to stupidity and stupid mistakes. Keeping the fear is how people live longer. I thought you government types would know that all too well, yes?"

Nameless Counsel #1: "Apparently you think this is a joke! Laughing it off sounds like an attempt to-"

Observer: "Dr. Laserbeard, would you meet with me later? I think this meeting is done. We've wasted enough time and have already covered some of the concerns."

Nameless Counsel #1-4: *leaves the room*

Laserbeard: "I guess I left quite the impression. Good!"

Observer: "You seem to enjoy antagonising them."

Laserbeard: "Any chance to screw with the government I take, or anyone who tries to screw with me. Only fair. Besides, I think I know one of them. Not by name anyways."

Observer: "That isn't good. You would do best to forget or pretend otherwise."

Laserbeard: "I am just kidding. They all sound the same to me."

Observer: "That is what the voice changing is also for."

Laserbeard: "I've noticed. Yet they don't use all the same frequency. Anyways, I have done what you asked. I have brought them in. They are unaware of what they are really here for."

Observer: "Keep it that way. Like you said, their chances of success are almost nil and death is the price of their failure. All you need to do is take the one and put them into the first testing chamber. Then it will be further biome testing from there."

Laserbeard: "I've built some interesting machines and traps that are meant to test reflexes. I don't think it is fast enough in some cases."

Observer: "Then make it faster on that last setting. I want little chance of survival. This needs to impress. Disregard the concerns the counsel brought up. Make it even deadly to even the experiments at that rate. Should definitely remove any 0.001% chance of success a person has, yes?"

Laserbeard: "Yes. It will. By the way, you still haven't told me what exactly are these... experiments."

Observer:

"You will know when the time comes. Now take your leave and get to work. We need progress in the next week for testing."

I of course suspected something else. Something that will become evident soon enough. I always find out. I will see what Laserbeard says in private. He has already been bugged. Soon I will observe his real reasons. But a concern I also have is why that 4th counsel member never spoke up and kept silent. Something is off about that! I will investigate that and look into another troubling report from within the facility. A possibility of an impossibility. Something for which would surprise even me.
