a short story of a world where humans and anthros live side by side and one humans trip to become an anthro himself

My neighbor's a werewolf

By: Kirv goldblade (a.k.a. flood)

My neighbour's a werewolf... well okay technically he's a "lycanform canid", but really who's going to remember that, he's a neo-Anthro. You see about 15 years ago this big alien ship came crashing thru the solar system and smacked into the Canadian Rockies. The aliens inside had come in peace, they were the last of a dying race and looking for a way to save themselves, a long time ago they had travelled the galaxy looking to improve their race with the genetics of other races and animals which ended up with them looking live various anthropomorphized animals hence why we started calling then anthros (i mean they have their own name but from what I've heard even they can pronounce it any more), the problem with all that tinkering was that with out all the genetic info things got messed up and rendered them sterile. which brings us to there arrival on earth, the anthro scientists managed to figure out the problem but it was too late to save them, so in order to at least save them in spirit they decided at their last stop to create the cure they make an offer. They would grant humanity all their advanced technology under two conditions, first humanity had to be mostly unified (a task that was easier than expected though still took almost a decade on negotiation to finalize to a satisfactory level), and a stable population of at least 500 people must volunteer to become the new anthro race, the new global government withheld this second requirement from the public well they tried to figure out the best way to break it as anthros had rigged a dead man switch on there ship so if they died out before the neo anthros were born all the technology would be destroyed. This didn't end up being a problem though as well the council debated someone leaked the information to the public and though there was some public out cry at first volunteers started coming out of the woodwork, first 10, then 50, 100, 500, 1000 which brings us to today.

It's 2033 over 25% of the world population has converted to neo anthro and are enjoying the benefits of longer healthier lives, at first everyone was worried that the anthros cure might not work and would doom the neo anthros as well but those fears proved unfounded after 20 neo anthros were born in the first year. anthro tech has made life a lot easier for everyone as well human and neo anthro alike, low-grade anti-grav tech has made heavy lifting a breeze (and the reverse have made getting exercise a lot easier when you can just go for a walk at a higher personal gravity), traffic accidents are a thing of the past with people either taking driver less personal transports or cars containing anthro smart tech allowing traffic to adapt to most anything, and medical tech has advanced with even regular humans being able to live to over 100 well looking and feeling no older than 40.

My name is, well my current names not really important, after today it's going to be Kirv, it's kinda tradition for a neo anthro to take a new name when they convert, I've been waiting 2 years for today, I'm finally off the waiting list and on my way to the Toronto medical centre for my conversion, I'm not sure what I'll become, no one is until they go in, it has something to do with genetic compatibility but they need to run a test to pick you species just before the procedure, my transport pulls up to the to the centres entrance and I'm greeted by a rather handsome fox a true anthro base on his accent

"ah hello, Mr."

I cut him off "Kirv",

"Ah so you've already chosen good" he makes some quick notes on his personal pad and scratched out my old name "right this way we'll get you tested then we can start the process." he leads me into a large room several strange computers and what almost looks like a tanning bed. "okay if you'll just place your hand in here we can start the testing" he says pointing to a slot in one of the terminals,

I slide my hand in and soon feel a warm sensation and a small pinch after which a green light appears around the opening.

"you may remove your hand now, and if you come over here we'll see the results"

I withdraw my hand and walk over to stand beside the fox, on the terminal's screen i can see the images of various animals and wire-frames of their anthro forms flashing by suddenly the screen goes blank and flashes some sort of error in anthro before starting to flip through animals again only this time the animals being shown are not from earth eventually it stops on a form that can only be described as a gold dragon the words "aruic dracoform" appear on the screen along with the words "caution: xino form species additional consent required".

"what's that mean?" I ask

"oh it's rare but occasionally the system finds that a person's genetic compatibility better matches what you might call an alien creature than one of your earth animals when it does we need to get extra consent as you new form would be alien even among the rest of what you call neo anthros",

"so I'm compatible with an alien dragon how is that even possible?",

"our genetic templates are designed to be general use. only inserting code that works with your own, so it's not that you compatible with the dragon as you call it, it's just that you are currently most compatible with the template based on the creature. If you'd rather not have this template applied we can put you back in the list and try again at another time as it is likely you'll be found compatible with something more local in the future",

"I've waited 2 years for this, and I'm not going to pass up the chance to become a dragon.",

"very good" the fox replied "well the system prepares allow me to properly introduce myself, I am Jal Blackhand and I will be the lead operator on your conversion as well as your primary physician during the rehabilitation process"

The door opens and several other doctors and nurses file in, one pushing in a cart with a single metal case on it, the rest taking up positions at the other terminals around the room leaving the one at the head of the bed open for Dr. Blackhand and the nurse who brought the cart. The nurse a rather attractive anthro cat walks over to the bed and opens it revealing a recessed humanoid silhouette along with numerous monitoring wires and a masked apparently designed to fit over a human face well leaving room for a muzzle to form, well the nurse worked to prep the bead the doctor opened a hidden compartment in the wall and pulled out a small safe box,

" you'll have to be naked during the process so you can place your clothes in here and there is a safe compartment for your possessions, your shirts should still fit you fine after the process but human pants and undergarments won't be compatible with your new form"

the doctor wags his tail slightly, I'm almost kicking myself for not realizing I might end up with a tail,

seeing my distress he says " don't worry we understand some people might not realize all the potential features of their new forms, you be in a medical gown for your rehab which usually takes about a week after that you be provided with 2 pairs of tail appropriate sweatpants, and in your case I believe some claw safe socks and shoes, assuming you don't develop hard soles which based on your template is likely but better safe the barefoot",

relieved I strip placing my wallet phone and keys in the safe before setting the code then placing the rest of my clothes in the box.

"Ah good were ready for you if you will come and lay down here please." the doctor says motioning to the bed,

As I lay down I am both surprised and glad to feel that there is, in fact, an opening for my tail to form into, once I am in place the doctor and nurse begin setting up the monitors and placing the mask over my face, the doctor heads over to the cart and opens the case retrieving several vials which he inserts into his terminal, metal disk which he hands to the nurse who places in the back of my neck, and an injector gun, which he presses to my arm and injects me with before stepping back and closing the bed.

I sit in darkness for a time before I hear the doctors voice in my head, "hello can you hear me? no need to reply I can see from the readings you can. Now one thing I need to explain that device on your neck it what's called a trainer it's going to start the rehabilitation process before the conversion is even done by reprogramming you muscle memory so you won't have to relearn how to speak or the basics of walking the down side it that you have to be awake for the start of it and the conversion has to be started at the same time, that shot I gave you is was a mild pain killer and a remote triggered anaesthetic so well be able to put you under asap, but even with that things will be a little uncomfortable"

I knew what to expect, there had been a rather long waiver to read and sign just to get on the list and another to fill out to schedule the appointment when I got to the top so I just focused on an affirmative

.

"good, starting the process now I promise the pain with last only as long as it has to."

The moment his voice faded I a tingling at the back of my neck and several sharp jabs at key points along my body, "that wasn't so bad" I think, my face twitching involuntarily as the trainer starts its work, then the injections start, and it feels like my veins are being filled with liquid fire, I hear the doctors voice in my head again, but can't make out what he's trying to say but the pain dies as I fade into unconsciousness but not before feeling every joint in my body pop at once.

I wake up sometime later to see Dr. Blackhand standing over me, as my eyes adjust in also see my new muzzle looking rather smoother and duller than I had expected.

"Oh good you're awake," the doctor said rather cheerfully, " now I've got some good news, some bad news, and some plain news"

"ba nooth," I say immediately noticing my difficulty speaking

"yes as you can probably tell the trainer was not 100% effective but it did a good job, we should be able to get you talking normally with just a couple of sessions with a post conversion trainer no need to no need for long term speech therapy, now for the good news for starters the trainers effects on you legs appeared to be a total success meaning you'll likely only need balance and dexterity training to learn to use your new tail and claws, additionally though you scales are still forming, we expect you go through your first shedding in about a week, you are starting to develop a hard sole meaning that outside of reinforced work boots shoe will be purely cosmetic on you, and the plain old news, our bone scans show you have the potential to develop horns, it's up to you if you keep them and the process to remove them can be done and any medical centre with an appointment"

I opted to keep the horns as I was told that though the procedure to remove the was easy it was all but irreversible, and the predicted horn structure was considered an advantage as it would be generally unobtrusive and help protect my skull from impacts (though I would still need custom helmets for recreational activities and working in hard hat zones)

Over all I was in the rehabilitation wing for about a month spending my days learning to walk and run with a tail (as well as how to turn around without it knocking thing and people over) and my evenings under the effects of a trainer and I learned to speak again, almost one week in exactly I experienced my first shed, leaving the remainder of my old skin, the old me behind, revealing my scales in the 24k glory though they soon dulled (which was good being shiny was cool but blinding everyone around me was not) at this point the doctors informed me of 2 important things the first was that being scaled now I would undergo periodic sheds maybe once a month though the exact timing could change based on changes to my body and the second being that in my follow up tests they had found no signs of genetic aging they made it very clear that this did not mean I was immortal but it did mean the could not accurately predict my new potential life span as a neo anthro and that on the day I did die I would look no older than I did today

at the end of the month, it was finally time for me to go home, I dressed in my shirt and the pant that had been provided making a note to go clothes shopping after getting back home grabbed my things and thanked the doctor and nurses for helping me through this change. The trip home was uneventful, m neighbor was out mowing his lawn (thanks to anthro genetic engineering you could get grass that would stop growing at the perfect height but some people take it as a matter of pride to maintain their own yards) but stopped upon seeing me.

"wow so the rumors were true, I mean a friend of mine at the center told me he saw a dragon, I thought he meant a Komodo dragon."

"yep Mr. Whitefang, I an honest to goodness dragon, and I was as surprised as you are."

"I bet, so I know you picked your first name had any thought on your last?"

"yeah been thinking of Goldblade"

"has a nice ring to it, oh your grocery delivery arrived just before you did better go put it away before the cold pack run out"

"yeah I guess I should"

and so I walk back into my house, double checked that all the new anthro hardware had been installed (tail compatible toilets and such) and started restocking my fridge. So yeah my neighbor's a werewolf and that doesn't bug me one bit because now I'm a dragon.
