===============================================================

A family of foxes sit in an emergency room waiting area. Their heads huddled together, they try not to fathom the horror beyond the bleached white doors nearby.

In the operating room the broken form of what, a half hour earlier, had been a healthy young fox lay seizing, his clothes cut from his body as his once orange fur soaks in a red puddle of his blood on the white table cover.

Numerous needles and diodes cover his body. A rapid beeping follows pace with his struggling heart. Losing focus he takes a last glance around him. A last glimpse of the doctors covering the gashes, trying to replace the bones, and inserting needles urgently, before gasping one last breath.

=================================

Kaisa flexed his paws, staring serenely at his body below. "I need Adina," he thought, before finding himself at her stoop. Dashing inside quickly he crept into her room, whispering to wake her from her sleep.

=================================

Beneath the blazing lights of the E.R, the glazed lifeless eyes of the fox face upward blindly while a steady beep signals the dreaded flatline and a fresh bag of blood is run to his now still form.

=================================

"Adina," he said holding her tightly, "I'm going to miss you so much..."

=================================

An older female fox picks up the phone and calls her son's closest friend.

"Adina," she says, "There's been an accident."

=================================

Once again Kaisa finds himself in the O.R looking at his broken body. Glancing about puzzled he wonders wearily, "Why haven't I left yet?"

=================================

A pair of paddles emit a soft hum as they charge in the doctor's hands.

"Clear!" she yells, the body of the Fox jerking awkwardly as the machine emits a terse buzz.

=================================

Black... All he could see is black...

"Please god don't let this be all there is!" Kaisa thinks desperately.

=================================

"Clear!" says the doctor as the boy arches on the table. Throwing the paddles aside, the doctor returns to work on Kaisa, as the monitor next to the bed begins to beep once more.

=================================

Kaisa's body erupts in agony as his brain once again begins to gain focus. Staring about helplessly, a single tear falls from his eye as he claws desperately at his ebbing life.

Staring into the lights overhead, a scene flashes before him. Tristan with his calico arm resting on Tamari's shoulder says, "C'mon Kai my buddy, you can hack this! I need you around to make fun of."

"Don't leave me to deal with his shit alone." said Tam, rolling her eyes in exasperation.

Slowly the cats fade and are replaced by an adorable kit, ringing her hands nervously. "I need you to protect me Kaisa." she pleads. "You've always been here.... you can't leave!" she cries earnestly.

"I can hack this." Kaisa thinks to himself. "I CAN HACK THIS!" he screams in his head.

Darkness.....

=================================

A half hour later a small fox slams her way through the double doors leading to the E.R waiting room. Still in her pajamas and her hair flying behind her untamed, she halts at the sight of the family in front of her.

Kaisa's mother sobbing quietly on her husband's shoulder as he comforts her, a distant look on his face. Kaisa's younger brother sitting, his head between his knees and his paws over his ears, rocking back and forth nervously. Adina approached them slowly, settling herself on the couch next to Kaisa's brother an putting an arm across his shoulders comfortingly.

"Any news?" she asked cautiously.

"They've been working on him for a while now." sobbed his mother. "All they told us is that he's in bad shape." Her voice cracking as tears began to fall once more.

Adina glanced upward quickly after a few minutes silence as a Doberman in green scrubs made her way through the double doors solemnly.

"Your son suffered... extensive damage." she said slowly. "Multiple compound fractures and severe blood loss led him to flatline..."

Screaming out in misery Kaisa's mother began to cry uncontrollably.

"But he's stable..."
