#1 of Running In The Rain

It was late afternoon, around five-thirty. The day was starting to cool off from another day of roasting asphalt and vehicle exhaust. Even though the evening rush hour was already starting to trickle. Most day jobs released their workers from five to six and traffic would be congested and horrific until around ten that night.

But all of that worked to his advantage. Everyone would be so busy trying to get home and/or keep the peace that they wouldn't give a second glance to another furry walking down the busy streets. Even though he was one of the 'hybrids' that so often got slandered, beaten, or abused. The world they lived in was moderately peaceful, but, still racism ran rampant. Most of all it was the mixed breeds that got the worst of it.

He was standing outside of a business skyscraper. Leaning his shoulders back against the foundation wall of the structure. His right paw supported him at an angle in front of him while his left paw pressed against the wall his shoulders were. This made his left knee stick out and give him an air of boredom and/or hostility. So no one bothered him while he stood there. His black clawed hands were deep in to the pockets of his black cargo pants and an old black tank top covered his torso. Steam and smoke billowed out of his nose and mouth with each exhale, as if he were perpetually smoking, though he never actually did.

A business furry walked past him. An average and rather un-unique fox with the hair on his head clipped short and styled proper. He was wearing a dark brown business suit over his pale orange body, and his dark brown ears went back against his head when he laid his brown eyes on the loiterer. With a growl in his throat he tossed a curse at him; "Mutt" as he continued on his way in a much worse mood than before he saw the hybrid.

The entire time the one resting against the building just smiled. His short downy-like fur over his black muzzle seemed to suck in the light instead of reflecting it, and beneath the plush feather-fur it was apparent his skin was not just skin...But rather scales something similar to the under belly of a snake or crocodilian. His wolfish yet angled eyes seemed to glow unnaturally behind the yellow lenses of his goggles and literally gave the fox the creeps.

He watched the fox walk away mumbling and cursing to himself and chuckled deep in his throat. Even his voice was unusual. It had the musical quality to it of a wolf, but it was deeper, harsher, coarse. As if he could never clear his throat correctly. His ears were very wolfish and had thicker downy-fur than the rest of his head did and the left one had two dark medal piercing in it. Directly in front if his ears but almost obscured by the messy uncombed hair on his head were two small obsidian horns. They were straight as an arrow and gave the impression of being razor sharp at the tip. However, they did not stick straight up out of his head, but went back at an angle, towards his ears. This meant that he always kept his ears back...An expression to most canines of anger/and or annoyance. The hair on his head was silky but had a firmness to it that couldn't really be explained. He wore it a little long and shaggy, past his wolfish maw and to the middle of his neck, though it didn't touch his shoulders. It was apparent that he worked out in some capacity because his arms were well toned as was his broad chest and thin hard stomach. As for his legs, at the moment they were covered by the baggy black cargo pants. From all outward appearances it seemed that his entire body was covered in the weird chick-like fur and underneath he was covered in soft smooth scales.

He pulled his left hand out of his pocket and looked down at the nondescript watch on his wrist. Five forty-five.

It was time to move.

He pushed himself off the wall and pulled his other hand out of his pocket. His fingers were a little long for how tall he was, and they were tipped in talon-like claws. Not overly large, but noticeable. Not like the rounded paws of a wolf with stunted rounded claws. As he made his way towards the door to the building his tail was visible. It was very thick and muscled and ended in a tip much like his horns did. Whatever he was half of, that's where he got his tail, not the wolf part. If he held his tail down towards his legs it would each the back of his knees...So it wasn't very long, but it was strange, from the diameter of it compared to his back.

He pushed in the door and strolled in as a prissy looking lioness rushed out past him to get away from him. With a lazy confidence he strolled up to the front desk and looked past the receptionist at the numerous and random posters and fliers on the wall.

The receptionist was a pretty little fox of a deep burgundy and auburn hair. Her blue eyes glistened in fright at the sight of him but she was determined to do her job as best as she could and asked him if she could help him with something.

"Why, yes you can." He reached in to his pocket and pulled out a plastic card.

She almost jumped out of her chair as he slid the card across the desktop towards her. Though she managed to swallow her fright and took the card. It confused her and it was apparent on her face. He crossed his arms and waited for her to do something other than gawk. Not knowing what to do, she eventually said excuse me in a meek voice and stood up, walked in the back.

He scratched the back of his neck and yawned as he waited. His teeth were more reptilian than canine, every one almost the same length as the other one and ending in a point, when his mouth closed they created a scissor effect against each other.

She returned without the card but she had a piece of paper in her hand. Hastily she handed it to him before she even sat back down in her seat. He took the paper with a smile that made her shudder and turned to walk out of the building. It was a check for a large chunk of money, but it didn't specify who it was from, just where it came from. Meaning it didn't have any one furries name, but, it came from the company. Chances were they wouldn't even notice this much money had been missing but-

As he walked out of the door he nearly ran someone over. They were toppling over with a high pitched yelp as he reached out to prevent them from connecting with the concrete of the sidewalk. He was apologizing for not paying attention as she regained her balance and looked up at him. The programmed words of apology flew out of his head as two large red-hued brown eyes looked up in to his.

He'd never seen a furry like her before. She was just simply breathtaking. Because he suddenly couldn't suck in any air. But she broke the spell by taking a step back out of his grasp. She looked up at him with curiosity and a bit of surprise as if she'd never seen anyone like him either. The furries passing them seemed to disappear as they took in each others every detail.

She was a burnt but gentle yellow which lightened to her stomach in to a very pale, almost white, yellow. Her face was foxy in a way but her muzzle was more delicate and short, and her ears were a tad shorter. The hair on her head was cut short in to a bob style, with the most adorable blue headband in it with a bow on the side. Her hair was light yellow like her face but streaked with the darker burnt color towards her back and her tail. She was different than most furries because, well, she was just simply furry. Besides her face every part of her was covered in long, thick, straight hair. It looked soft without having to touch it. Beneath her neck towards the middle of her chest was the thickest and plushest patch of fur of the almost white. She was wearing a summer dress of pale blue with white polka dots on it.

"Excuse me, I'm sorry I ran in to you." Her voice was high pitched but it was so very, very sweet.

She turned away from him and continued down the sidewalk.

He didn't say anything else because he lost his voice and watched her walk away and get lost within the crowd. But before she was completely obscured from his view he got to see her unique tail. It curled up and against her back and had the longest softest hair probably anywhere on her.

He didn't know how long he stood there looking in the direction she walked off in before he finally came to and looked back down in to the check in his hand. With a heavy sigh he continued on his way.

Downtown where crime was worse and homeless furries were a definite problem, there was a soup kitchen, to help those that couldn't afford to feed themselves and to get out of the rain or cold or other elements. Outside of the door there was a little medal donation box asking for favors and it was here that he dropped the check and continued on his way home.
