#1 of Task Force

This is the sequel to my story The Academy. Though it is not necessary, I strongly recommend reading The Academy before reading Task Force to gain a better understanding of the characters and plot. Enjoy!

Support for the special assignments team is growing. I still haven't gotten it approved, but that should be coming soon enough. I've found someone to organize the training, a recently promoted general. He was a black ops guy early in his career and continued to organize unregistered missions after being moved to intelligence. I think he will do great.

I've also began secretly recruiting a team of trainers, engineers, and other specialists to help once we get going. When we finally get approval, they will all be coming with me. Sure, some of the high brass will be mad, but it won't make any difference. I will have complete control over my team and the staff. I still haven't found a suitable facility yet though.

I got the special assignments teem authorized. Finally we can get to work. Now all we have to do is to find the right group. I have eyes out in all the spec ops teams, basic for the four branches, University Officer Training, and The Academy. If the team we're looking for is in the military, we'll find them.

I got permission to use an old super bunker. It's called Center Seventeen. One of my hackers found it when he was searching the military's records for possible personnel and equipment we could use. It looks to be perfect. We'll need to find a pilot who can make the approach.

Date: 5/6/2133

I still haven't found the right soldiers for the program. There are some individuals who stand out, but I need a team. I'm sure we will find them. In the mean time, work has begun in restoring Center Seventeen. It hasn't been used for anything but storage since the war, but I think it will suit my purpose well. We've found a pilot. He was an outstanding grad from flight school, proven in the field, and runner up at Advanced. We'll bring him in tomorrow and show him his new plane.

Date: 7/24/2133

I think we found them. My man at The Academy says there's a squad who looks like they may have what it takes. It's only the second week, but they won the first squad challenge, and have shown excellent leadership and coordination. I want to see how they do in the field before we make any final decisions.

Work is wrapping up at seventeen. Once we finish the observation center, we can start moving in the computers. I hope to get this done soon. It's taking longer than expected.

These could be the cadets we're looking for. Their leader, Kirian Harper, is a natural with a rifle. The other's show prowess in their own specific specialties and they all seem to use their strengths together flawlessly. I need to find a way to test them on a real mission.

Date: 8/14/2133

As I had planned, the five cadets we have been watching entered the pre-semester field comp. Now we will have a chance to observe them in a real situation not controlled by trainers. I have read their files; they all come from completely different walks of life, yet have come together as a seamless team. I have complete confidence that Harper will lead them to success.

If they win, we will offer them the opportunity to join the special assignment team. The general has already volunteered to talk to them. I cannot force them to join. We may employ some of the few remaining humans, but I will not act like one. If they are the ones we are looking for, they will volunteer. If not, we go back to looking.

Seventeen is finally online. I will move in to my new office tomorrow. I want to inspect everything to make sure it is up to the challenge. The excitement of the staff is noticeable. They are as eager to see these cadets in training as I am.

Date: 8/19/2133

They agreed. Soon we will begin work. I've set everything up. The retrieval will take place in a week, and then we can begin training. These five will be the future of our county. A programmable, versatile team of soldiers trained to practically sense each other's thoughts. Each one brings their own unique skill set. We will need to plan to accommodate them. The developers have already started on their weapons.

Date: 8/25/2133

The idiots nearly blew it! We've spent years setting this up and what do the trainees do? They break out and make a public appearance at the funeral! I have to admit, I'm impressed that they were able to get out undetected. I designed that security system myself. These cadets are more than I could ever have hoped for to begin with. Perhaps they will surpass my dreams when we are finished.

Interview with (name removed, classified)

Did I want to do it, no. Did I like doing it, no. Taking lives from families, friends, and loved ones is always hard and never right especially at their age. Did I have to do it, no. Did it need to be done, yes.

Look, I know we're in this "supposed" time of peace, but all that really means is that we're not at war. With all the turmoil in parts of the world, and the changes in leadership of countries only made allies with very loose treaties, you can never be too prepared. Right now what we need, if we want to keep the peace we've worked so hard to achieve is this Task Force.

Think about it, a group of super soldiers who can insert into hot spots, take care of "problems" and get out unnoticed. We can remove trouble areas before the situation threatens to escalate. Plus, they'll be versatile and programmable. If things do come to war, we'll already have them available as assets to quickly resolve the conflict.

Am I trying to start a war? No! I take offence to your accusations. I've seen what wars can do, how they can destroy a country and its people.

I'm simply sacrificing the families of five outstanding soldiers, for the lives and loved ones of thousands. Plus, they volunteered for this assignment, no one's making them do it.

I think they just arrived, I must go meet them. What was that?

If they're caught? They won't be caught.
