Epilogue

Infinity had found a sheltered spot not too far from where she had helped Lyyreth rescue his brother. It had been hours since that confrontation with the hunters, the deaths she had cause were still on her mind. Was it really necessary? She asked herself, looking down to her blood covered paws. She had not even taken the opportunity to clean them since earlier, she had been too caught up with getting away. She found herself looking up into the black night sky, staring at the twinkling stars overhead. She shivered her scales as she felt the loneliest she had been since Axton's death. Now she was alone, with no Axton to warm her scales, and not even the dragons that she had met were around. They gave so much to help you...why did you leave them behind? Her tail twitched behind her as she felt the rest of her body tremble with each thought that ran through her mind.

Why had I left? She raked her mind for the answer as she tried to remember what she was thinking in the moment of her departure. Would I have murdered all those people in front of Axton? She ripped up the earth with her claws, and scattered the dirt with a wave. She pictured his small human face, his mouth hanging out in horror as he watched her murder mortal after mortal before her. How he would hate you right now. Her mind whispered to her, making her heart sink lower than it had already been.

She thought to the gryphon that she had killed just to eat. What am I becoming? Am I finally turning into the monster that the lich always wanted? Just an animal that kills to survive? She hung her head in silence, her wings shaking behind her. _No..that....can't be it...otherwise I wouldn't feel so horrible right now.._She repeated that over and over in her head until the swirling vortex of confusion stopped knocking at her mind.

Infinity picked herself up and strode over to a large tree, and quickly scampered up into it. She rested herself on the sturdy branches, settling her wings on her back as she settled her head into her paws. What now? What purpose is there to keep on going? She dipped her head down, the moon-light catching her horns. Her ears twitched when moments later she heard the sound of heavy paws landing on the grass behind her, trying to be quiet. She did not move from the tree as she arched her head back to see the green dragon Lyyreth walking towards her, there was something hanging from his mouth.

She narrowed her eyes to see that the brave green dragon that had stood his ground to save her had the brown satchel in his jaws. Axton's pack! Her eyes widened as she focused on it, twitching her claws. Her entire body felt numb as Lyyreth continued towards her, his eyes focused squarely on her as his tail swished softly behind him. How could I have forgotten it? After all the pain..the suffering...He meant so much to me..._She looked away from the dragon with misty eyes, as ice gripped at her senses. _I'm......horrible....a horrible mother.."

"Are you okay?" His sweet voice came from behind her. She could feel the genuine care that he felt, just with simple words. Maybe the satchel helped a little bit as well.

"I don't know." she replied flatly, not taking her blurry vision away from the stars above.

"What are you thinking about, that has you so transfixed with the stars? I...brought the pack of your son...I thought you would want it. I figured you would...Need it."

"I don't need your pity." she replied with a flick of her tail. She waited for his response for a minute before she hung her head, feeling more lost and confused then she had ever known. What am I supposed to do? Axton what would you have done in my scales?

"You...can stay up in that tree if you want...or you can come down if you want..er...I didn't think you should be alone right now..considering Axton...a...not meaning that you need help persay..but that you would want someone here with you...Not that you need it." Lyyreth stumbled through his words, sneezing as he finished. "Just..please come down?"

Infinity could not look to him as she thought to her lost son. It was just like it was with the bath from the human Jaiden. Soft tears broke from her eyes and streamed down her face, dripping down to the ground far below the tree. Axton....Axton.. She rubbed her eyes with her paws as the tears would not stop. She felt empty, alone, defeated. Part of her wished right now she had simply remained in the tower and done whatever the lich had wanted. Then he would be alive...He and I would have still had each other...and I wouldn't be alone."

Her ears twitched, and she froze when she felt Lyyreth's claw rise up and wipe a tear from her cheek. What are you doing? She opened her eye to glare at the green dragon, who had propped himself up on the tree and had snaked his snout towards her. His eyes looked to her in concern, something she was not used to seeing. Not anymore at least.

"Please would you come down from your perch? You should not be left alone to cry and wallow in your misery." When she offered him no reply he took his head back and sneezed. "I....I'm sorry if I am bad at cheering people up."

Infinity fought the urge to smile as she sniffed away the last of her tears. You awkward thing you. She dropped down from the tree, landing softly beside him with her next breath. She closed her eyes for a moment, his scent of dragon mixed with pine was a soothing comfort to her soul. For a brief moment the cold that had grabbed her heart firmly seemed to melt away, and she felt warm. She opened her eyes and looked to him, to see that his frills were fluttering.

"Oh." he said, his voice full of surprise. "Well..um...I almost expected you to stay up there."

She said not a word and gave him a stern face. One that was hollow, and devoid of any emotion.

"I'll stay here and listen if you want."Lyyreth lowered his voice. "Whatever you want to discuss, I won't run away."

That is sweet of you, but no. Infinity just shook her head. "No...Let's just go."

"Where?" he asked, moving beside her with a few strides.

"Let's head back to that farm you were staying on." She snorted, turning her snout back to glare at him. "The one with that farmer Jerry." The one that healed me from the poison that almost killed me...Another human that helped save me.

"Oh!" Lyyreth's frills started to shift to a darker shade of green. "I thought you didn't want to come with us...We were heading out to start out adventure again tomorrow. I know it sounds stupid, but we wanted to see the world outside our forest."

Infinity shook her head, remembering Axton and her dream. It was the same one the dragon had just said. 'It's not stupid..To dream of something better..." She hung her head. "To explore the world...To find magic...and to see everything." She wiped a tear from her cheek as her heart reminded her that he was no longer alive.

"Something wrong?" Lyyreth snaked his head towards her, his eyes once again filled with concern. She looked to them and almost got lost within his brilliant yellow spheres. "I didn't mean to make you cry."

"It's nothing." she lied, turning her head away with a snap of her jaw.

"That wasn't nothing..." he pointed to her tears. "Nothing can't make you cry, or make your heart fill with such sadness. Was it?" he gestured to the bag with a claw.

"No." she lied again, looking up to the sky to see a pair of icy blue eyes glaring at her from the stars above. Axton...I hope you made it to the afterlife...and are home with all the dragon spirits in the stars...It's the least you deserve my wonderful son.

"Then shall we go?" Lyyreth spread his wings, and bounded into the air without another word. He curled his neck back to look at her when he had flown ahead of her, his tail swishing in the air behind him.

Infinity followed after him with hardly any effort. She said not a word as she flew close to the green dragon, her wings almost touching his numerous times. Lyyreth brought her along the path, past the trees, and back to the farm that had saved her life. They passed over the house, where lights from torches could be seen, and the soft sweet sound of a violin filled the air. Lyyreth settled down next to the barn, refolding his wings against his back as he arched his serpentine neck to look at her.

"Are you really coming with us tomorrow?" he asked softly, watching her land softer than he had done.

"I have nowhere else to go." She strode past him into the barn. "So yes." Her eyes fell to the hay, to which she curled herself into a ball on top of it. Axton...I'm really going to go on an adventure...like you always wanted. She tried to not picture his face as her heart began to ache one again. She felt Lyyreth settle down close beside her, letting out a soft pleased sigh. I will see the world for both of us...That I swear to you. Infinity settled her head down into her paws and let sleep take her. For the first time in awhile, her dreams were not plagued by sorrow.
