Just me laying out my thoughts on the werewolf corps.

LAPD Lupine Corps

Just over a year ago the police commissioner of the Los Angeles metropolitan district appeared before the public and made a dramatic statement. A squad of werewolves, yes, actual werewolves, was being formed by the police district and would soon be on law enforcement patrol along with human officers.

This was at first viewed as a bizarre publicity stunt but the very next day the press and members of the public were introduced to what certainly seemed to be actual fantasy werewolves, huge, strong, sharp-clawed but also extremely protective of the public and their fellow officers. Upon close examination the common consensus was that these were not men (and women) in stilts and elaborate costumes or some sort of animatronics but actual beast-men.

Within a week the powerful creatures were on patrol and despite strong initial reservations the public soon developed a positive outlook on the situation. The werewolves weren't walking down the street issuing parking tickets or chasing speeders. They were summoned only for specific situations and they proved extremely good at chasing down robbers, dealing with vicious stray dogs, and dealing with "active shooters". They were fast, strong and tough and they were color-blind. Everyone was just "a human" to them and they liked humans. Except the ones they ate, and they tended only to eat very bad people. No one really complained when a school shooter was chased down by a werewolf and the last anyone heard of him was a belch.

Any remaining misgivings largely fled when Unit 7 died a hero's death charging headlong into a group of extremists shooting up LAX. He tore them to shreds at the cost of his life and there is talk of creating a statue in his honor in addition to the mural already in place. The werewolves, wherever they came from (and so many conflicting stories were rooted out by "inside sources" that to this day no one knows for sure except maybe the police commissioner) were here to stay.

They proved so valuable that they were soon spread out over the many cities of the San Fernando Valley and are now sometimes loaned out to other municipalities as well. If more werewolves turn up they have jobs waiting for them. Of the initial nine the remaining eight are still on duty and a female werefox has brought the squad back up to strength. Rarely does the public see more than one due to the vast area and the relatively few situations where more than one is required.

Each Were has an assigned human partner who among other things drives the "Lupine unit van" to transport the wolf. Van One transports Unit One, that is, Werewolf One, Van Two transports Werewolf Two and so on.

They can operate on two legs or four, with some preferring one mode over the other. Running on all fours is faster and some move and fight this way almost exclusively while the ones who use tools or weapons more are primarily bipedal. Lupine Units range from 8 to 10 feet in height when fully upright and weigh 400-700 pounds.

The addition of the werefox Unit 9 (and units 10-12, if they actually exist) has led to the possible reclassification of the Corps as the "Therianthrope Corps" but the name change is currently caught up in committee. "Theriocorps" was proposed but vetoed due the anticipated intentional mispronunciation as "Theriothorpth" by hecklers.

Despite being officially "werewolves," no one will admit to seeing the human form of any Unit save the newly hired werefox. Purportedly they stay in wereform at all times and public (and perhaps even in private) to conceal their human identities. Various conspiracy websites speculate that the lack of proof that they have human forms is due to them not actually being werewolves at all but Unit 9 is unambiguously a werefox, or at least something that meets the traditional definition. No one has shot one with a silver bullet yet to see what will happen or at least no one has reported on such an event. It may be a case of "I'd like to tell people about this. Perhaps if I make a note on my phone it will survive the stomach acids that are digesting me."

All of the Weres are at least ten times as strong as a fit human and the larger ones approach twenty times the strength. Even the smaller ones can pick up the back of a car and their strength, speed and toughness, not to mention their claws and fangs make them lethal opponents for unarmed humans. Their regenerative healing makes them difficult but not impossible to seriously injure or kill and unless completely shredded or smashed flat they can recover. They can trot for hours on all fours at 20-25 MPH and over short distances can sprint at speeds approaching 60 MPH, which makes them ideal for chasing down perps.

Unit gear ranges from the original simple pair of shorts and stenciled vest, armored equivalents of those items, and up to full body armor for assaults. Only units 1 and 7 currently have full armor sets and only Unit 1 has "siege" armor. Due to their great strength most of them wear the armored vest and shorts at all times while on duty, even when at the station houses. The death of the original Unit 7 to massed gunfire caused the Unit gear to be reexamined, leading to the increase in armor protection. All now have armored collars and helmets so go with the shorts and vest if they need them and bit by bit each is receiving additional armor. While they regenerate most injuries, it is simply more efficient for them not to be injured at all.

Due to their flexible nature and the strength of their gastric juices even the smallest is capable of swallowing and digesting an entire adult human. Some prefer their meals bloody but for neatness' sake any one of them may bolt down their prey. The metabolism (and digestive process) of a Unit is relatively normal unless the Were is injured. When hurt a Were's metabolism goes into high gear to accelerate healing and a badly hurt Were can digest a human meal in a matter of minutes. Prey of an injured werewolf is virtually absorbed into their body as the werewolf draws on this ready source of protein and calories to heal itself, leaving little residue compared to their normal digestive process.

Most of the wolves speak with a strong accent due to their muzzles and fangs and some appear to have a limited vocabulary. Nevertheless they have proven so trustworthy and so valuable in many roles that they ironically now have a much better reputation with the public than most human police forces, this despite the fact that they are known to eat people. The police for their part value them greatly because the wolves are happy to do really dangerous work that would otherwise fall on the men and women of the LAPD and usually come out of it with nothing worse than a few fast healing bullet wounds.

The sudden appearance of police werewolves among the public has caused a flood of questionable art and even merchandise to appear, including unlicensed werewolf-themed adult toys.

*****

Unit numbers do not imply a hierarchy but (at least according to the LAPD) were simply assigned in the order the wolves joined the force.

Unit 1: "Siegebreaker." Works with SWAT in siege assaults and hostage rescue. Custom made heavily armored suit. Heaviest (nearly 700 pounds) and strongest of the werewolves, though #4 is the tallest. Originally #3 but became #1 as an in-joke since he's "Always the first one through the door."

Unit 2: Patrol officer. Among the more articulate Weres and often serves as a public spokesman for the group. Due to practice or aptitude he largely lacks the strong accent most of them have.

Unit 3: Interrogation specialist. Female werewolf but as large and strong as most of the males. Often acts as the "bad cop" in interrogations due to intimidating nature of Weres. Originally Unit 1 but swapped numbers with the current #1.

Unit 4: "Dogcatcher". Seconded to animal control due to aptitude and interest. Lives in a spare room at his police station and feeds almost exclusively on feral/vicious dogs and problem animals. As a result the station joke is that he is simply too cheap to pay for food and lodging. Rarely speaks, habitually goes on all fours but is trustworthy and good-tempered. #4 wears arm and leg wrappings on duty as a form of additional armor to fend off dog bites.

Unit 5: Warrant enforcement. Specializes in tracking down and capturing fugitives. Unusually good at controlling his digestion, he sometimes carries them back in his belly but if he is badly injured while doing so the usual digestive overdrive happens. He is one of the reasons Standard Form 191-B was created, "Post-event perp digestion justification checksheet." Not to be confused with Form 191-A, "Pre-event perp digestion justification checksheet." Yes, the police even have paperwork to fill out when they eat someone.

Unit 6. Patrol officer. Best "nose" in the corps and often called to track down criminals who flee the scenes of crimes. These are newsworthy events and so #6 is the best known of the wolves and has many admirers among the public. He has, at least twice, been offered and turned down money to appear in pornographic films but due to his number of admirers (male and female) and the many affairs he has with them, certain candid images of him circulate online and these have been used to create various adult toys. "Pornstar" has thus been advanced as a nickname for him but while office jokes are one thing, no one wants to put the six hundred pound werewolf they work with in a bad mood.

Unit 7. Assault. Called for hostage or siege situations that do not require the "tank" aspect of Unit 1. Has full-body protective armor but is more lightly protected and thus faster than Siegebreaker. She is the fastest runner of of the wolves. Fights on two feet using something much more like martial arts than the usual werewolf brawling and her strength, speed and claws make her a lethal combatant. Sometimes works with #1 on major assaults. Their relationship is the worst kept secret in the corps.

Unit 8 is one of the exceptions to the rule that the Corps members rarely use firearms. #8 likes guns. The bigger the better, and since he stands nine feet tall and over 600 pounds they can be pretty big. This is perhaps not the ideal role for a werewolf since his sheer size makes him an inviting target for return fire but if you need a vehicle taken out with a large caliber anti-material rifle he's your man. Or need someone to jump into a room with a drum fed fully automatic shotgun in each hand. He sometimes serves as a mobile bastion by putting on thick frontal armor and lying down near the action with a heavy pintle mounted weapon on his shoulders.

Unit 9: Vice/Human trafficking. Female werefox. Newest and lightest of the corps at only 400 pounds in wereform. Only corps member seen in human form. Uses attractive human shape and dress for infiltration or attracting muggers, rapists, etc. Due to use of human form she has so far been the subject of three attempted rapes, all of which resulted in her filling out Form 191-Bs. Unit 9 speaks English (and Spanish) with what is described as a "purring" accent in wereform as compared to the wolves' rasping growl.

Unit 10-12(?) Conspiracy theory sites have pointed to various unconfirmed reports of monsters in and around Los Angeles as evidence of more police therianthropes. Reports include what might be some sort of wereweasel or weremongoose, a possible size changing werecat, and some blurry photos of a leathery-winged creature that purportedly saved a woman by swallowing a mugger whole before laboriously flapping away with its meal. If any of these are even close to true the police are not talking.
