#16 of Of Men and Dragons: The last Knight

As he made his way towards the hut William would not let go of him. The grip on his shoulder seemed to tighten with every step he took. It was hard for William to trust strangers, but Cyrvanyx knew her well enough to trust that she would take good care of him.

They both walked through the street of the village, if it could be called a street. It was barely anything more than a small narrow path. He barely even fit trough there without his wings scrapping the roofs of the buildings on each side of the road. Some people who walked by stared at him like he was the first dragon they ever saw.

It was not every day that two dragons of the order, carrying a child and an unconscious knight arrive at the clan and tell everyone that the order has fallen. He himself still could not fully believe it, and he was there. The sounds of the villagers around him were starting to anyone him. He hated being surrounded by so many people at once, especially humans.

When he passed the last building the sounds began to fade. The path became wilder and dirtier as he and William came closer to the healers hut. On the side of the road, rich and fertile ground was used as farming land, while others were used to old livestock. Farming fields were filled with wheat, some of which was just getting harvested.

His eyes fell upon the hut again. The rather small wooden building stood at the edge of a small forest. It was built very simple, compared to the other buildings in the village. A roof made from thatch and four wooden walls. Nothing too fancy, but it was something. Behind the hut was a garden that was bigger than the house itself. It was filled with various plants Síona would use to make herbs.

He could see the guards that brought Gareth to her, standing in the doorway, presumably talking to someone inside. Gareth was nowhere to be seen, which meant that they already brought him inside. As he and William were almost there the two guards bowed their heads to the healer and left. She was just about to close the door as she saw him.

"Cyr... Cyrvanyx?" A smile grew on her face. "And I thought this would just be another ordinary day." She stepped out of the hut, towards him and William. "I´m... sorry for what happened with the order. the guards told me what happened." Her smile vanished. "They must´ve been like family to you."

"Yes, they were. Especially a knight called Henry. He was... a great friend." He sighed, his ears flattening against his head. "This here is his son." He looked down at William and gave him a small shove with his paw. "I managed to rescue him."

"I see..." She stepped towards him. As she stood in front of William, Cyrvanyx took a closer look at her. She certainly changed over the years, as was expected. The first day he met Henry he also looked different. Her hair was a fiery red that was slowly beginning to lose its color. Her eyes though did not changed a bit, still having that dark brown color and the same passion burning in them as the first day he met her. That passion was helping people and it was showing the moment she saw William. "What is your name, boy?" She asked him as she lowered herself.

"William, milady." He answered, glaring at her with wide eyes.

Síona´s hearty laughter startled William, making Cyrvanyx chuckle."Milady?" She shook her head, smiling at him. "I´m not a noble woman, William. I´m a simple healer, nothing more, nothing less. Just call me Síona."

"Alright, Mi- Síona." William said, standing there stiff like a soldier in front of a lord.

"Why´d you bring him to me?" Síona asked him, looking into his golden gaze. "I´m just going to guess that didn´t just come by for a visit to say hello, or did you?"

"No." He licked his nose. "I thought that maybe you could watch over William, since I can´t raise a human child on my own." She folded her arms underneath her chest, quirking a brow. "I know it's a lot to ask of you. But I know no one else whom I could trust to raise him but you."

"Mhhm..." She looked at William, rubbing her forehead. "Hm... since my own son has been gone for a while now... I guess so. I will do as you asked." She said and kneeled down in front of William.

He felt relieve washing over him as she said those words. For a moment he thought that she might actually say no. If she did he would have had no idea what to do with William. Luckily she said yes.

"What´s the matter with you?" Síona asked William. "I know it is probably hard for you to trust me, especially after all the horrible things you witnessed." She put a hand on his shoulder. "But I promise you to take good care of you." She smiled at him. "Will you at least give me a chance to prove myself?"

A small smile also crept on William´s face. He nodded, his arms folded behind his back. "Good." Síona said as she got up from the ground. "Come on inside then." She held out her hand, waiting for William to grasp it. He hesitated for a moment and looked back at Cyrvanyx. Then he reached forth and took her hand, letting her lead him inside.

Cyr smiled and went after them. He obviously would not fit into the small building, but his head could at least fit through the door. So when Síona and William entered the hut he stuck his head trough the doorway, only to feel something hitting the side of his head. He cringed and groaned a little as the sudden pain resonated in his head.

"Valeria!" Síona shouted out towards his attacker. "What are you doing?"

"I-I´m sorry, b-but he startled me!" He heard the voice of a human woman coming from the side of his head that was throbbing with pain. While he retreated from the door a little to rub his head he eyed his attacker. She appeared to be a young woman with black hair and brown eyes. Judging by her name and the way she reacted when she saw him, she was not from Albia.

"I´m so sorry, dragon!" The young woman dropped the metal pan she hit him with and took several steps backwards as she saw him glaring at her. "I-I´m sorry!" There was some kind of strange outlandish accent in her voice he never heard before.

"Calm yourself, Val." Síona chuckled at her cowering form. "He won´t hurt you. No dragon around here will. How often do I have to say that to get that into your head."

"I´m sorry, Síona."

"Don´t apologize, my dear. Just calm yourself and get the herbs I told you about."

"Of course, my lady."

Síona rolled her eyes. "I´m not a-" Before she could finish her sentence the girl left the hut by using the back door. She sighed. "Oh, that girl is unbelievable." She turned towards Cyr and William. "Her name is Valeria. She´s from the Eldorian empire, far away from here."

"Then what is she doing here?" He asked as he moved his head a little closer inside. A shiver ran down his neck and back as the frills on his neck scrapped the doorway. Not the pleasant kind of shiver though. "If she is so afraid of dragons I don´t think this is a good place for her to be."

"Well she is from some kind of school or academy something and is very interested in dragons. So she traveled here on her own without the knowledge of her family." She turned around, towards a table Gareth was laying on. "That girl actually managed to find her way here on foot. That was about two weeks ago." While she was talking she started taking off Gareth´s armor, putting the pieces on the table right next to her. "For a while she was all the village was talking about. When she arrived here, telling me that she was an aspiring healer, I just had to take her into my service. Because I admire her passion for both healing and dragons. Reminded me a bit of myself when I was her age."

He and William both watched and listened carefully. He looked around the room a bit. That one room was the only room in the hut. The only thing that divided the bedroom from the rest of the building was a wall with a wide opening as a doorway, only without the door. The room was filled with shelves, filled with various books and bottles with strange liquids inside. There were three tables standing at the wall, one of which Gareth was laying on. Another table stood on the other side of the room and another one in the corner with two chairs placed close. All that was somehow cramped into that one close space.

The wound on Gareth´s head did not look as bad as a few days earlier, but he was still unconscious. "How bad is it?" He asked as he watched her taking off the armor. "He will make it, right?"

"Yes, yes." She waved at him and sighed. "You overreacted a little if I might say so. This wound is not deadly."

"I didn´t overreact, Ary did." He stated.

"Who´s that? Your love interest?"

"W-what? No!" He unintentionally made it sound like he was insulted. "What makes you think that?"

Síona laughed at his reaction, and so did William. The boy turned towards him with a big grin on his face. "You in love with the green dragon lady?"

"No I- first of we don´t say "dragon lady" we say dragoness and secondly I... like her, yes, but that doesn´t mean that I love her, alright?"

"Whatever you say." Síona said, laughing to herself as she took off the last few pieces of armor. "And of course I remember Arylaryl. She was here to get herself patched up almost as often as you. She got into fights almost as often as you, you know?" She sighed as she took off the last piece of armor, his chainmail shirt, and put it on the table. "Anyway, about this knight." She cleared her throat."He will be fine and should wake up in the next few days, or maybe weeks. It is also in the realms of possibility that he lost parts of his memory, but expect that he will be fine."

"That is good, apart from the... losing memories part. And his name is Gareth." He looked Gareth over as Síona pulled a blanket over him.

"That is very good to know. And I said its only a possibility." She looked over Gareth. "Now where is-"

Suddenly the back door opened again and in stepped Valeria with some kind of flower in her hand. "I´m sorry that it took so long. I... forgot which one we needed. But this- this is the right one... right?"

"Yes it is." She pointed towards a table with all kinds of knives and other strange tools were lined up. "Now cut it open. You remember how that works at least?"

"Yes, of course." She waited no longer and went to the table, once in a while taking a peak at Cyrvanyx. He seemed to unnerve her. He decided that it would probably be for the better for him to leave them, for now.

"So I guess I leave then." He said as he looked at William. "She will take good care of you, I promise." With that said he pulled his head out of the building, almost getting his horns caught in the doorframe as he did so. "I´ll see you soon, William." He said to him as he spread his wings.

As he took off he saw William waving after him, smiling. He smiled back, even though William could not see it. When he looked forward he wondered what he would do next. The chief was organizing a meeting with the highclaws for him, but that would take some time.

For the time being he could only wait and see what would happen next.
