Will they ever learn? Part 1

_ _

With a heavy flick of my tail I arc round to the left in a sharp, high-G turn in an effort to shake off the F-14 fighter jet that now blasts across my nose. That threat averted I quickly tuck in my wings and drop into a steep dive for the cover of the forest below, only to find myself at the receiving end of an Apache helicopter gunship. Flaring my wings I use the downwash from the rotors to put myself in the pilots' blind spot and then aim for the tail rotor, ripping it off with a single swipe from a rear claw, then I watch the machine start to spin and fall out of control. I follow it down, landing in the forest close to the wreck before darting off through the trees, leaping from branch to branch.

My name is Fornax (Thorn for short). I'm a Dragon. I'm black with electric blue markings. Oh and I'm kind of unofficial figure-head of the so called 'furry resistance', though we cover more than just furries. We have also got scalies, intelligent non-anthros and most of what humans would class as 'mythical beings'. Who are we resisting? Humans of course, they didn't like us and started to enslave or kill us so we resist. I suppose if we've done one thing it's to unite the humans and stop them killing each other, that means we have the entire human war machine raining on our little party. It's bad, but we have no choice of surrender.

Back at 'the clump of rocks that I call my den' I'm just nodding off when "Sir. Sir. The council is meeting sir. They need you present." A small anthro 'roo, about 18 years old, is standing nervously a few metres away "Fine." I reply wearily, I haven't slept for four days. Stretching once I follow the 'roo to where the council is meeting. The council is basically a meeting between the leaders of each species in the resistance. I'm not leader of the dragons; I just hold it all together as some species don't get on too well. As I listen vaguely to the leaders blathering on about tactics and things, then I feel a foot on my tail, when I look round I see the young 'roo looking very intimidated by the collection of powerful leaders and quietly reversing himself over my tail. I realise I must look fairly intimidating myself as I'm five times his size, quite grumpy, have a mouth full of sharp teeth, have massive claws and am covered snout to tail in blood and grime, and I try smiling at him encouragingly but only succeed in making him more scared. Eventually I fall asleep.

Hours later I awake to find the council gone but the 'roo asleep on my tail, I carefully extract my trapped appendage and switch to my anthro form so I'm only about one and a half times his size then I pick him up gently and carry him, still asleep, to my den where I set out some fruit for him to eat after devouring a deer for my own breakfast. The 'roo wakes suddenly and looks around groggily, but when he spies the fruit he smiles a little and starts eating while staring at me with nervous curiosity. "Hi" I say. "Hi" he replies quietly. A few minutes later, "thanks for the fruit." "s'all right." I reply. After obviously deciding I'm not going to eat him the 'roo loosens up a bit and I learn that his name is Carl and he has been made my personal assistant 'to give him something to do', nice of someone to tell me about this. After about half an hour of chatting I ask "so Carl, is there anywhere you want to go?" "Well, I'd like to go to Australia 'cos I've never been and..." "I meant now" "oh, well then there's always the falls" "yeah why not. c'mon" I say getting up and walking off down the hill towards a large bush "hang on, aren't you meant to be killing humans?" Carl says, scrambling after me. "Day off." I reply casually as I conjure a key out of thin air with a small puff of blue flame.

When we reach the bush I pick it up whole revealing a dirty, '99 Subaru Impreza WRC Rally Car that I 'borrowed' years ago. "Hop in" I say, opening both doors with magic. I jam the key in the starter and twist, hoping it starts. It does. Everyone in the area turns to look before returning to their business as the initial engine roar is replaced by the characteristic, deep, burbling throb of all Imprezas when idling. While getting my wings and tail comfy I tell Carl to strap in before doing the same and gunning the car down the dirt track towards the falls, the harsh engine note reverberating off the valley walls.

We arrive at the falls fairly quickly because of my manic, rally style driving and I slide the car to a halt on a large ledge about half way up the fall. Carl scrambles out, high on adrenaline and I emerge calmly after turning off the engine. "Dude that was awesome!" I give a short laugh in return and poof the keys away in another puff of blue flame. Switching back to my non-anthro form but staying the same size I turn to Carl and ask "fancy a swim?" "Yeah!" comes the reply and I throw myself off the cliff into the deep pool of the fall, quickly followed by Carl who bombs in beside me. After about three hours and several mud fights I suddenly stop and prick my ears, cocking my head to hear better. I hear a jet. I tackle Carl hard and throw us both into the deep water under the fall just as the Paveway smart-bomb impacts, destroying the part of the riverbank and sending huge chunks of rock in all directions.

I drag the unconscious Carl onto the bank in my jaws and assess the damage. Apart from being knocked out by the shock wave the 'roo is fine and I only have a few small cuts but a splitting head ache. I lay Carl under a tree and wake him with a splash of water. He comes round with a groan. "You alright?" I ask. "Ow." comes the feeble reply. "Hngff." I grunt, and then shift Carl into the Impreza. I drive slowly on the way back. I stop the car in the middle of my den and promptly fall asleep, still behind the wheel.

When I wake I find a freshly dead goat staring at me with an arrow in its side and a young Kangaroo polishing a longbow. I smile and tuck in to breakfast. After filling my belly I get out of the car to talk to Carl but he beats me to it. "Mornin' sleeping ugly." he says cheerfully. "That's, 'sleeping ugly' Sir! to you." I reply jokingly. "By the way, thanks." He says

"For what?"

"For saving me"

"It shouldn't have happened in the first place"

"Why?"

"There are barriers, magic barriers that protect this area so it remains a safe place from the humans, so that jet should not have been any where near the falls"

"Then how...?"

"I don't know"
