#1 of A Wolf's First Steps

A Wolf's First Steps is a new series I wanna write about a wolf who gets separated from his pack after his first time out of the cave and then realizes that he has to learn how to survive alone. But with this chapter, it seems as if he's not truly alone in the world.

"Everything..." I repeated to myself scooting my paws through the layers of snow. "Everything I knew is gone. Covered in white, No!" I fought back at myself. "They are out here somewhere. I just need to keep going." I kept trudging through trying to find my pack. This was the first time Mom let me go with the pack to hunt after begging for days. "Oh no, she must be so worried!" I would scream and move faster nose first into the storm. The weather got worse and worse when we went out hunting and everyone and everything got whiter and whiter to the point where turning around for a second could mean getting lost. But despite my father's warnings, I got distracted and played and ran through the snow to the point where I didn't even remember what hunting was. "I didn't get so far, maybe they got to a shelter. Or they went back. Either way, I need to get out of this!" The enjoyment brought to me through the snow was lost completely. I would do anything to get out at this point.

I started slowing down, with the thoughts of where I was or what my task was fading. I knew I couldn't last long. I didn't know why at the moment, but I fell something warm blow onto my back. I just kept going knowing I can't give up without a fight, as my father always said. The warm feeling just came and went and came and went until I was so cold that I couldn't even feel someone plucking fur off of my back. Soon after I saw a cave forming ahead. My hope was restored, giving me enough strength to run on. I started speeding up, seeing the cave get bigger and bigger and closer and closer, until I finally noticed huge footsteps were being made behind me. I turned to see and tripped, injuring my paw. I couldn't get up or feel anything until I felt something sharp pick me up by my neck. I didn't take the time to look up at what was carrying me. I closed my eyes in hope that I could end quickly.

Later that day, I wake up surrounded in warmth. I move my legs around to notice I was laying on my side, on a rocky surface, but still was surrounded by warmth. "Mom?" I whisper. I nuzzled up closer into the fur of what I believed was my Mother. But something smelt different. My Mother never had such a strong smell coming from her muzzle as she slept. I look up and see that the snow was still going outside, meaning I made it to the cave. But not alone. I tried getting up but no matter how much I squirmed I didn't have enough strength to move.I reached out to bite at the massive arm as self defense, but then realized this bear went out of its way to help me. The time of day showed that the beast wasn't sleeping with me because it was dark, but it was cold. The amount of snow showed that it wasn't long from when I fell asleep. The _fishy _smell from its mouth showed that it was hunting for food when it saw me. Everything was coming together, this wasn't a foe, it was a friend.

The beast scooted closer to me as it slept, I didn't mind. "Thank you," I whispered.

"Hush now," I quickly turned my head in shock after finally hearing his voice to see the face of my savior. A bear with the biggest and nicest grin I have ever seen."If you are going to survive, you're going to need more rest and warmth."

"Can I just say one more thing... sir?" I caught him before he started sleeping again.

"What is it?"

"Are you going to leave me alone? Cause I don't wanna get attached to you if I'm going to loose you like I did with my,"

"Don't worry." He interrupted. "You will never be alone once I've invited you into my cave."

I smiled and closed my eyes.

"I, I'm Steve, by the way."

"And I think we should get more rest." And that was the last words I remember from that day.
