The Legend of Zelda The Tale of Twins Chapter 3: The children of the forest

The twins dropped when the moon finally graced the sky that night, the sound of a wolf howling in the distance could be heard when the two finally fell on their backsides. Navy and the impish girl looked down disappointed at the two Navy then saying,

"What are you two doing? Where not there yet, not even close."

The twins yawned sleepy looks taking to their eyes as Linkle said,

"Give us a break, even that old slave driver we had to call a boss never worked us this long."

Link nodded then replied with a tired sounding,

"We're spent, get off our asses."

The two floating females sighed, only looking down when Linkle said,

"Not to mention its getting cold."

Her twin nodded Linkle cuddling closer to him when a sudden gust brought the cold in once more. The imp girl finally said once she knew the twins would not move,

"Fine then if you want to camp out here better get a fire going then."

Link nodded digging in his pockets as his sister asked,

"But we don't even have a tent, or sleeping bags or anything like that, what are we suppose to sleep on?"

The imp girl's brow twitched with a pang of frustration only made worse when link asked,

"Hey sis do you have a lighter?"

The girl shook her head Link then asking.

"How are we going to start a fire without a lighter?"

This set the imp over the top, the small girl pulling at her hair before shouting,

"Holy fucking shit could you two be more useless? You don't even know how to start a fire without the aid of a freaking lighter?"

Navy sighed then suggesting as the two floating females watched the twins hold one another as they got colder,

"Guess this is why Ganon waited so long, spent so long breeding this day and age. Their generation was born around safety, comfort, and complacency, who needs to learn how to survive or even stay warm when you have hot air at the push of a button."

The imp girl nodded then said looking around,

"Look if we don't help them they'll freeze and we can't save the world with a hero of time-sickle. I'll look for something to start a fire with you take those two and go look for wood and kindling, we're close enough to the forest for there to be plenty of that around."

The fairy nodded then managing to get the twins up off the ground she lead them to the a tree line. With the fairy's help they managed to gather a bit of wood and some dry grass, and the imp managed to find some stones of the right kind to strike to make sparks with. After setting a bed for the fire to sit safely in the imp girl instructed the twins to set their tinder in first the small floating girl then striking the stones together, much to the amazement of the twins when showers of sparks rained down from them. After a few more attempts her actions finally bore fruit when the dried grass finally started to smolder, the imp then telling one of the twins to blow gently under the base to help the fire start; Link getting up to do so, the impish girl then swatted his head once with a stern warning of,

"Remember not to hard, you blow to hard on that and you'll blow it away got it."

Link nodded then did as he was told, blowing gently on the smoldering grass till a flame finally erupted from the pile, the imp then adding a few pieces of wood to it. Within moments the fire grew the twins cooing in delight when the fire's warmth started to warm them. Comforted by the warm embrace of the flames the two twins started nodding off laying against one another till finally their eyes closed and sleep overcame them. Looking at the two Navy and the imp looked at the two sleeping humans, a look of worry mixed with a wonder of 'is this really what we have to work with?' in one package, Navy then saying in a hushed tone,

"he's so far from ready to save anything let alone the world that its not funny."

The imp nodded then said,

"One thing is sure, this is by far the worst incarnation of the hero yet, doubt he knows the difference between the hilt of a sword from the pointy end, he's going to need some hardcore training to be ready for anything."

The two nodded then decided to rest themselves watching the two humans sleep. The twins dreams where filled with panic and chaos, reliving the attack from the two witches, the sounds of people crying out for help filled the air around them, people screaming in terror as buildings exploded, the sounds of children crying in pain filling their minds, to call it a nightmare would have been an understatement, it was just flat out horrible. In their dreams they felt a strange sense of, shame, might have been the best word to describe it, the people of their city needed a hero, only for none to be had it made them feel strangely disappointed in themselves. The two suddenly had the feeling of their dreams changing, almost as if three pairs of eyes where watching them, unsure of what to make of it the two of them looked at these figures in their dreams, to find the shadow cast humans looking back at them, each wearing green hooded tunics, staring back at them. The three figures in their dreams watched on the two for but moments till they shook their heads and looked away almost like they where ashamed of them, the twins felt a strange pang of shame and guilt combined till they suddenly woke, the imp girl shaking them out of their nightmarish slumber.

Rubbing their eyes they woke to the sight of the imp girl floating over them, the shadow clad imp looking down at them saying once she saw their eyes,

"Up and at em you two, we need to get to the forest today or we might just be found again."

The two yawned and stretched in unison waking from the strange dream they had shared, the two looking at each other for a moment as they tried to figure out what the strange dream meant. They didn't have the luxury of time to doing so however as they where called to again by the two floating females; the two then nodding and getting up again. They managed to straighten themselves up a bit, not having the luxury of a hot shower or the other items of their bathroom to aid them. Link managed to hep his twin pull her hair into to messy twin tails and vise versa Linkel managed to make her brother's hair stay down . . . . for the most part. Once up and on their feet the two where just about dragged along by the two floating girls, the two not to long after waking complaining about breakfast and desires of coffee, Navy finally saying when she turned to the twins again,

"OK you two are hungry, tell me do you two have any food on you at all or coffee?"

The two stopped and looked at each other then shaking their head no, the fairy then saying,

"Then stop your bellyaching, once we get to the forest I'm sure the kokiri will be willing to feed you."

The twins then proceed to cock their heads to the side in a twin mirror fashion before they ask,

"What are the Kokiri?"

The imp just face palms as she then proceeds to hide in the boys shadow most likely to vent her frustrations in private. The fairy just sighs and orders the twins to keep following her, which they did, in a pouty fashion but they moved. Its about some time in the afternoon before they found themselves deep in the forest, the twins confused by the sudden and utterly thick fog which was suddenly covering the area, it was so dense that in an attempt to not lose track of her, Link reached forward to his sister and ended up grabbing a certain something something that made is sister eep in a shout like manor, The girls face blushed brightly when he finally saw her face and what he was grabbing, Link letting out a quickly panicked,

"Sorry sis, i couldn't see what . . . i was . . . grabbing."

The girl nodded with an embarrassed look on her face only made worse when the fairy once again chimed in adding her two cents when she said,

"Hey you two, twincest later, stay close to me, the forest actively protects itself these days, without me guiding you you'll end up in the lost woods, and that would be the worst case for you."

Both twins faces lit up in bright crimson then nodded, then doing as told and following closely after the fairy said girls glowing trail being the only thing they could see through the fog. After what felt to them like hours of walking they finally followed the fairy through the barrier of fog and into what seemed to be a badly overgrown little village. The fairy looked around with almost a look of 'its good to be home' look on her tiny face, however before she could react and call for anyone suddenly dozens of deku shrubs popped up from the foliage and threatened to bombard the area with their explosive seeds, and several of the kokiri guardians sprang from the brush and before the fairy could shout stop had Link and Linkel pinned to the floor. One of the warriors a stout almost young boy looking elf shouting,

"How did you get here human?"

The fairy however quickly interjected when she shouted tackling the green clad warrior in the head,

"Get off of him Mido!"

The short children looking warriors and their deku allies suddenly looked to the small fairy that was kicking the one she called Mido in the cheek, the boy then saying,

"Navy did you lead these humans here?"

The fairy nodded as the imp girl emerged from the girls shadow and said,

"Do you idiots not recognize the hero of time when you are currently mounting him?"

Mido looked down at the teen who he was currently sitting on, a blade held at his throat, then saying,

"Well i guess he does kind of look like the hero but he can't be, no half decent swordsmen would let me take him down, he's got to be a fake or a wuss."

The fairy then says pulling on the small elf's ear,

"Just get off him Mido and you guys let the girl go right now!"

The others nodded willing to believe the fairy, Mido however was less gentle, rather then just getting off of him he threw link back down before he got up. The twins then finally returned to their feet and looked around, they where surrounded by what they took to be little kids, the tallest was of them was no bigger then five foot, at the most. Link and his sister looked around at the little elf like kids for a little while as they spoke to the plant like shrub creatures whom looked around making sure everything was alright before they vanished under the canopy that covered the forest floor. Link then finally asked looking to Navy and the Imp,

"Whats with all the little kids?"

Most of them just sighed and went back to where they where before this started, Mido was the only one who took offense to it and stomped off in a huff, the fairy then saying to the twins,

"They're not little kids, these are the kokiri, also known as the children of the forest. They are the guardians of this forest and of the great deku tree."

The twins nodded the fairy then turning when she heard a girl say,

"Your new friends look a little hungry Navy."

The small girl turned and then said when she had seen who had spoken,

"Fado!"

Flying over to then hugging the blond kokiri girl Navy then said,

"Its nice to see you again, and yes they are hungry."

The imp girl then says after floating over to and poking Linkle's forehead,

"It's all they've been complaining about since dawn."

The two twins where about to complain about her comment but the moment their stomachs started growling and so they just looked away with an embarrassed look on their faces. She simply laughed and invited them to eat, showing them through the slightly overgrown treetop section of the village till they reached Fado's home; she invited them in saying as the small elf hurried into what was assumed to be her kitchen,

"You're just in time, I just made lunch, well for myself, but please have a seat and I'll get you two some."

The twins nodded and then sat down at a table that was nearly two sizes to small for them, the scene comical enough as the two twins tried to sit in their chairs without breaking them made the Imp girl pinch herself to keep from laughing out loud. The small blond girl returned shortly with two plates of food, though the twins where hoping for something a little more meaty what they got was still good, something of a sandwich and a large verity of fruits and other such items that could easily be found in a forest, the twins ate happily regardless just happy to have food finally, Fado smiled with a laugh when her home was soon filled with coo's and happy noms, Navy then saying,

"Told you they where hungry."

Fado laughed with a nod then saying when she produced two large fruits and a knife,

"Want some juice?"

The twins looked to the small elf girl as she held up then shook the two large juice filled fruits, said fruits sloshing when shook. The twins looked at one another then back to Fado with a nod the small elf then smiling as she cut open a hole in the two fruits then handed them to the twins who took a tandem almost mirrored drink then cooing in delight when the sweet juices from the fruit splashed into their mouths. Fado then took a seat with something to eat of her own and her own juice fruit, then saying when she saw the twins set theirs down after a long drink,

"Like them? We call then Punch berries."

Link nodded followed by his sister, the small elf girl then going on to say,

"Yeah, they are a popular drink in the village, and the best thing is depending on what section of the forest you get them at, they come in different flavors."

Link then asks as he looks over to the small fairy who was munching of a berry herself,

"So what do we do now that we're here in this forest?"

The tiny fairy smiled then said,

"Well you need training, and badly. Now the second incarnation of the hero though he had his faults, was by far the greatest warrior that was seen in his generation."

Link nodded stuffing another bite of his sandwich Navy then going on to say,

"Sadly, and obviously seeing as you are here, he can't train you himself, he however did teach everything he knew to one other warrior."

Linkle then asked having finished her lunch,

"Who would that be?"

Navy grinned then said,

"His best friend and little fuck buddy Saria."

Fado look away for a moment leading the imp to ask,

"Why'd you just look away like that?"

The small elf girl then said,

"Well Saria, isn't here right now."

The fairy coughed a little bit, nearly choking on her food, then asking,

"She's not, then where the hell is she?"

Fado looked away again not wanting to give them more bad news as she then said,

"She went to the forest temple, to . . . . ."

The girls pause made the imps brow twitch expecting the worst as she then asked,

"To??"

Fado sighed then said unable to delay it any longer,

"See why it suddenly relocated to the deepest section of the lost woods."

Navy was taken aback the imp however suddenly shouted "FUCK!" at the top of her lungs looking like she was about to explode into a cascade of profanity as she then ducked into Link's shadow. Fado sighed nervously as navy then said,

"Great, so the only one who has an ice cube's chance in hell to train this lump,"

The fairy stopping only for a moment to point at link the boy clearly taking offense, before she then resumed on with,

"Is now nigh unreachable in the deepest section of the lost woods."

Fado nodded then said in response,

"The lost woods have been acting strangely as of late, entire sections of the woods change at random, pathways that would lead to your location would suddenly change under foot, one wrong step and you're lost, its why she insisted on going alone."

Navy fluttered down to the table in a defeated slump muttering to herself that there was no way in hell the twins would survive the lost woods as they were, Fado then responding with,

"There is someone in the village who should be able to give them some basic training at least."

The sullen fairy then asked looking up to the blond elf girl,

"Who would that be?"

Fado then said with something of a grimace as she clarified,

"Well he isn't as good as Saria mind you, but She did name Mido second in command of the villages protectors for a reason, trumped only by Saria, Mido is the second best warrior we have."

The twins thought back and recalled the guy they where talking about, the boyish elf that had all but mounted Link in his surprise attack when they entered the village. The twins looked at each other as link then said,

"Oh that guy, yeah I don't think he'll care to help me."

His sister nodding then saying,

"Yeah he seems to hate my brother."

Fado sighed then responded with,

"Yeah, he and the second hero . . . . . where not on the best of terms, Mido saw him as a rival, but in truth he was never a match for the hero. Saria had to just about break the second hero's arm to get him to train Mido so he could protect the village; they never got to resolve their differences however, the second hero died before they could make amends, and though he'll never admit it, Mido will never forgive himself for not doing so when he could. It could be that you being the forth incarnation of the hero of time on top of you look so similar to him, Mido must have imprinted his old frustrations with the second onto you."

Link nodded, the imp having since come out of the twins shadows and listened to the story then said,

"Then lets go and make that annoying little shrimp train Link. If what you think is true then him helping the new hero might help him resolve and close old wounds. Fado nodded then said,

"Well we've no other choice, no one else in the village is good enough for what you need done, shall we go now?"

The imp nodded then said floating up off of the table,

"Lead the way."
