#8 of The Dangers of Wearable Technology

A commission that is going to be turned into my next book! A space station dweller is roped into beta-testing the latest in wearable technology, only to find that technology turned against him in the most unusual way. It's one thing when a hacker takes your money, or your identity, but what happens when its your very body they're after?

This is it, the last chapter I'm afraid. If you really enjoyed this story then please consider purchasing it when it comes out in book format, either in e-book or as a paperback.

It took only two days for the two dragons to be released from the evidence storage room on the space station, which seemed to make many of the officers disappointed by their sudden departure. As they were walked out of the security wing Max overheard that security personnel had started to fight for the normally-avoided evidence detail once it meant they had a chance to see and interact with the newest species of animal. They also found out that they were still in the news, and Max glanced at Evan to see his frown deepen when they saw on a viewscreen that there was now a manhunt after him. Max was saddened to see that it had played out just like Albert had predicted, even finding out that the corporate court had charged Evan with everything after receiving the evidence he delivered to them.

Their moods continued to dampen when they came back into the station proper to see Albert waiting for them with a crew of journalists behind him taking pictures and a number of corporate executives and a transport shuttle. For a few moments Max considered making a run for it but as soon as their leashes changed hands from the security guards to Albert the idea flitted away from his mind. He and Evan were brought aboard the transport and brought to the shuttle bay of the station in order to make a jump to the corporate headquarters where Evan used to work. Before he stepped on Max took one last look back at the station that had come to be his home until the doors shut and sealed it away from him...

Months passed after their arrival on the new space station, though time became a relative thing for Max as he tried to continue to adjust to his life as a mere pet. After only a few weeks he found his means for escape exhausted just like Evan had predicted. He even attempted to run away only to remember that he had no way off the station and was suddenly filled with a need to return home. It hadn't helped that they had become media sensations which allowed them to be easily identified, and even as the initial craze faded Evan became villainized for his supposed illegal research that bore two new creatures and Albert received a promotion with the corporation for his outreach in helping with the care and acclimation of them. Not only did Albert retain full control of them as his property, but was able to strut him and Evan around while others looked on with awe and envy.

It also took quite some time before Max got used to the other changes to his anatomy, more than once having to lay eggs that Albert quickly sold to his friends as well as the highest bidder. As he sat there on one side of Albert while he sat in a private box seat at a sporting event Max couldn't help but touch his stomach as it once more incubated a clutch, only this time they were not mere eggs. Evan and Max locked eyes from across the seat, the mated pair concerned for their young as Albert got up from his seat and cheered.

As Albert sat back down once again the door to the suite opened and a shimmering blue-skinned female came in with a silver tray. "I have the refreshments that you ordered for you and your pets," she said as she placed a bottle filled with golden liquor and a glass in front of him. "You have a fine taste in alcohol, sir, not many even know of such a vintage."

Albert took the bottle and looked at it as two plates of food were set down in front of Max and Evan, the two dragons able to pick up the gourmet burgers that they were served with their forelimbs after quite a bit of practice. "I didn't order this... must be a corporate gift," he said as he poured himself a glass, his smirk increasing as he watched the server look at the two while they ate. "Do you like my companions?"

"They're quite beautiful," she said as she gave a grin to Albert. "I've never seen anything like them in the system, you must be pretty important to have such exotic specimens. I wouldn't dream of being able to have anything like this."

"Never say never, my dear," Albert chuckled as he placed a hand on Max's head. "This one here is about to give this station the ability to have one of their own just like mine, for a small fee of course. But yes, as of right now I do feel particularly blessed to have them by my side."

"I hate to ask... but may I pet them?" she asked, Albert giving her a nod before returning his attention to the game and sipping the expensive liquor. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Max." She said as she slowly placed her hand against the scales of his neck. It was something that he and Evan had both gotten used to, strangers pawing at their scales in order to feel what it was like. As her hand slipped to his collar though he felt a shudder vibrate through his entire body, and when he looked up at her she just gave him a coy smile. "Good girl."

Once she had given Max a few more strokes she moved over and did the same with Evan, whose eyes widened slightly when she touched his neck where the collar rested. After she had given Evan her attention she stood up and asked Albert if he wanted anything else and he dismissed her with a wave of his hand. Once the server had left the two dragons looked at one another, and though they wanted to speak they knew anything they said would be heard by Albert as well. All Max could do was shrug when Evan gave him a questioning look on what just happened and he resolved to discuss it later with him once they got back to their quarters.

Except that Max found he didn't have to wait that long as after a few minutes the blackout shades of the suite came down in front of the windows. All three looked at the scene in confusion as they heard the door lock behind them as well, Albert putting out the cigar he had been smoking as he stood up from his chair. "What's going on?" he asked angrily as he looked around before he tapped his suit. "Call stadium maintenance."

"I'm afraid that your call can not be completed at this time," a digitized voice said from the speakers that surrounded the room. "We are in control of this suite now, so I suggest you sit down now and listen to what we have to say."

"Is this some kind of joke!?" Albert shouted, Max and Evan slowly backing away as the human spun around the darkened room in a fury. "Do you know who I am?! Do you know what I could do to you once I find out who you are!?"

"We know exactly who you are, Albert," the voice replied, undaunted as the rage in Albert's face began to melt into fear. "We also know who the two are that you turned into your loyal dragon pets. If Max and Evan would like to speak, the modder who was kind enough to slip a connection modulator into your collars will allow you to vocalize with us."

Before either dragon got to speak it was Albert who spoke first. "You know nothing of what is going on here!" he shouted in defiance. "These two were created by-"

"YOU." the voice replied in a pitch so deep they could hear all the glass in the suite rattle slightly, which caused the human to recoil back slightly as the room's viewscreen descended from the ceiling. "Did you honestly think that you were just going to get away with it? That someone wouldn't figure out what you did, particularly if they managed to cross paths with Max before you turned him into a dragon?"

As the viewscreen came to life it revealed the source of the voice, Max gasping as his forepaws went up to his muzzle. "Tamaria?" he said as the chimeral modder grinned and waved back at him, the rubber jackal right behind her doing the same. "Nubi! How?"

"Well I actually took a small leave from the terraforming station after a few weeks when you didn't come back to visit," Nubi explained. "When I got past the signal shield around the planet I immediately felt your connection to my communications system pinging, and since you couldn't actually connect to me I figured that your situation had not improved since we last left one another. So Tamaria and I took a leave of absence in order to find out what happened, and here we are."

"Wow... you're the modders that Max met with," Evan stated as he looked up at the screen in awe. "He's told me so much about you guys, I can't wait to meet you in person."

"Nothing of the sort is happening!" Albert exclaimed angrily as he pointed a finger at the screen. "You have hacked into a secure line and threatened a corporate executive! You two will be lucky if you don't end up in prison, much less keep those jobs of yours!"

To their surprise the two on the screen looked at each other, then slowly nodded. "I suppose we are in the wrong on this one," Nubi admitted, both Evan and Max raising an eyeridge in question. "Go ahead Albert, turn us in, we've stopped jamming the signal."

Albert eyed them wearily as he activated his suit's commlink and asked for security, a voice on the other end immediately popping up asking him what the trouble was. He smirked at the two and gave his name and corporate identification number. Once the man on the other end of the line confirmed his identity and asked him what the problem was, Albert opened his mouth to speak, only to find that nothing came out. His lips shook slightly in strained effort as he tried to say anything as the other man asked if anything was alright. Finally after nearly a minute of trying he let out an exasperated sigh and told them it was a false alarm before hanging up and glaring at the two grinning modders.

"Boy, it sure does suck when you can't get out what you're trying to say," Tamaria taunted.

"You two think you're so clever," Albert spat.

"Yes," Tamaria quickly interjected.

"You'll never get away with this," Albert replied. "No matter what our end game is you'll never get away with it. Unlike the two next to me I have corporate protections, the second they realize that I'm gone or kidnapped they're going to come at you like a swarm of angry hornets, you probably won't even make it off the planet."

"Now that would be true," Nubi said as he held up a finger. "If you still had your corporate status, which as of a few days ago had been silently revoked." There was a moment of tense silence as everyone could see Albert's body tense up. "Turns out that with enough time Crystoff was able to hack in and find the original authentication tags to the commands you implemented in their suits, especially once Max connected with Evan. Your corporation was not very happy with such new information, but rather than make a public spectacle of you being thrown in jail for the rest of your life, they agreed to sweep it quietly under the rug in exchange for us making sure you disappeared."

Max could see Albert's composure faltering as he reached down with a shaking hand to pick up his cigar in an attempt to calm himself, only to drop it to the floor when he saw the hand holding it. "Ah, finally the fruits of our labor begin to come to fruition," Nubi said as Albert stared wide-eyed at his hands as the gloves that had covered them began to grow scaly against his thickening fingers. "I must admit that once Tamaria and I reversed engineered those nanites of yours we knew we had something that modders would love. Of course your method was a bit slow, luckily with my knowledge of chemical compounds I made an additive that will greatly increase the speed of your transformation. The fact you wore the same type of suit that Max and Evan did just made it all the easier."

Both Max and Evan backed away as Albert yelled and cursed, though with the roar of the game outside and the soundproofing in the walls the only ones who heard him were them and the two on the screen. The camouflage on his suit faltered and phased out, leaving him only with his skin-tight rubber bodysuit as the muscle beneath it began to shift and thicken. What had taken days to happen to Max he now watched happen before his eyes in mere minutes as Albert held his head with thick, heavy paws as he fell to his knees. The others stayed silent as his cries turned to growls as his suit covered his face and it began to push out into a muzzle and a pair of horns grew from his skull.

Furniture crashed as Albert thrashed on the floor, the tail slithering out from his spine knocking into the table and spilling the liquor on the floor as his legs swelled with new muscle while the scaly texture cascaded down his body. Max flinched when he heard the joints snap and his bones rearrange into a quadrupedal configuration while his chest and abs barreled out. Then just as quickly as it started the former human's transformation seemed to finish, leaving him on the floor panting heavily as his body continued to twitch. He had become a dragon just like them, except a fair bit smaller and without wings like Max and Evan.

"Unfortunately we couldn't give you all the same amenities you gave to Max and Evan," Tamaria mocked. "Such a rapid transformation, even one that's chemically lubricated, does have its drawbacks. For instance I doubt you'll be able to talk as we likely burned out the circuits that had integrated into your scales, though perhaps if you're a good boy I may be able to fix that... eventually. In any case, by the time you get used to your new form we'll be there to pick you up and bring you to a place where you'll get treated like you deserve... all of you."

The screen went black and retreated back up into the screen, leaving Max and Evan alone with Albert once again. They slowly and carefully padded their way to the partially destroyed room where Evan crushed the still lit cigar while Max investigated the spilled drink. Though he couldn't tell just from looking at it, he guessed that was where the nanites that had transformed Albert had been introduced into his system, integrating with his own standard once from the suit that had changed him. After he took the nearly-empty bottle and put it upright to prevent any more spillage, he padded over next to Evan and looked down at the still whimpering dragon on the floor.

"Who thought something as simple as wearable technology could be so dangerous," Evan said as Albert looked up at them with yellow reptilian eyes, a perfect contrast to the red scales of his body as a bead of silver dripped down from his nostrils. "I wonder how much the modders messed with his brain or if he looks loopy just because he's exhausted... either way, it looks like none of us got out of this with their humanity."

"I think Albert lost his humanity a long time ago," Max remarked as he looked down at Albert. "You still with us there?"

It took a few seconds before any sense of composure came back to Albert's face, and when it did he looked down at himself his face was a mixture of rage and confusion. "How..." he said to himself as the other two dragons just watched him. "How did they do this to me? Even if they were able to discover who I was, they shouldn't have been able to replicate my designs, much less target me."

"Well you did have two modders and a crazed scientist working against you," Max mocked. "Funny how they didn't take very kindly to you changing people against their will. Of course now that you're in the same boat as us you'll know exactly what it's like to be on the receiving end of such treatment."

"No... no, I will not lose like this!" Albert said as he got up shakily on all fours, both Evan and Max insultingly warning him about the perils of suddenly having to be a quadruped. "I order you two to eviscerate those freaks as soon as they come through that door!"

Evan and Max looked at each other, then as the seconds passed the grins on their muzzles grew as they looked back down at their shocked counterpart. "Gee, I don't feel the need to do that at all," Max stated with a bite in his voice. "How about you, Evan?"

"Not a bit," Evan added.

"It appears that you don't hold any power over us anymore," Max explained as Albert slowly backed away from the two approaching dragons. "I wonder if, perhaps, it's the other way around? Sit Albert."

To their surprise and amusement the smaller dragon almost immediately sat down, the horrified look on Albert's face as he did so tinted with the look of pleasure that they knew all too well. Both dragons took a turn giving their former captor several commands and watched as the delay between their orders and his actions began to diminish. Once they were done with their fun they ordered for him to sit and wait in the corner, smirking at each other as they told him what a good boy he was after he did it to watch his tail wag.

"Nubi and Tamaria definitely know what they're doing," Evan commented as they went back to their now cold food and nibbled on it. "I wonder how far away they are from collecting us? If they really do have corporate permission to take, us I can only imagine they were close by when they made the broadcast."

"They're probably going to grab us when the game ends," Max speculated. "Crate us up and transport us out from the back as everyone is leaving. Then I suppose we're going to get loaded up on a freighter and shipped to a new home, perhaps even the one that they're terraforming right now. Just think about it, a whole new planet with nothing on it but bioengineered organisms to keep the ecosystem stable."

"I guess..." Evan replied with a sigh. "But what do you think will happen once we set foot on that new planet we're hoping for?"

"Hopefully a better future..." Max said as he motioned for Evan to come over, the other dragon resting against him as both their forepaws rested on his belly. "Together."
