Aven is getting a little tired at the radio station he works at. Running a late night show on the air can be a chore, but a listener is about to make things interesting.

Taking Calls

by theonehowl

The night gave into the early morning. The clock struck one. A lone voice spoke out during these late hours. Aven Desnern delivered a cool, savvy set of vocals. His listeners set their dials to his station. They waited to hear what had to be said tonight. It could have been a moral debate brought on by a listener, a complimentary fan, or a poor soul in need of guidance.

"Alright, we are taking calls tonight, people. Let's hear what anyone has to say. Do we have any problems in the love life tonight? Like everyone is just fine and dandy tonight? I doubt it. Let's hear it, people."

Then the calls started up. Jerry, an editor and delayer for the calls gave the thumbs up to Aven. The callers lined up to tell the DJ what they had to say.

"Alright. Jenny, you're on the air. What do ya' got for me?"

"Hi, Aven! I just wanted to say... well..-hi!" A fit of giggles followed the bubbly voice.

"Well, hello back! Next call. Trevor, you're on the air." The voice over the phone talked to someone in the background. Vaguely, the radio heard Trevor say something about drive-thru's and cheeseburgers. More voices began to argue. "Oookay- thanks for calling, Trevor!" The sound was cut. "Next, we have Alison. Alison, what can I do for you?"

"Hi, Aven. My man isn't giving me what I need in bed," she said. The voice had a small whining sensation to it.

"Well, uhmm, what exactly is he not doing right?"

"I don't think I can say it all over the radio."

"Alright, then, let's talk in private. Jerry, switch us over." Aven's voice still sounded through to the listeners. "okay, go ahead." A small period of silence isolated the audience in a calm suspense. "Oh, well, Alison, there is an easy solution to that. Find somebody else. This is something you can't fix, and I am a true believer that there is somebody out there for all of us. There are just a lot more of the ones who are not compatible than those who are. Thanks for calling, bye."

The silent caller left unnoticed by the rest of the listeners, and Aven moved on. The night continued like always. Like Aven's philosophy, the less compatible calls came more frequently than ones who were compatible- compatible for entertainment and ratings, that is. The enjoyment being sucked out so early made for what he and Jerry calls a dead night. Both of them sagged in boredom as the late evening, early morning, rolled on. The DJ's voice even sagged, giving it a slightly depressive sound.

"Ryan, you're on the air; give me something." Please, he begged in his mind. Ryan spoke with a warm sound, slow in his speech but evenly toned.

"Hello, Aven. I'm merely a curious listener with a head full of questions about what it is you Dj's do..."

Aven felt a little more interested. He liked the particularly welcoming sound of this caller's words.

"I'd be glad to answer your questions. Let me just check something, real quick," Aven said. He took a glance back at Jerry. The mouse gave him a nod. They had only a few calls, and Jerry seemed to be sure they could wait. "Yeah, we're good. Go ahead, Ryan."

"Excellent. First, I'm just curious... what species are you? I can only hear canine. A wolf?, perhaps?"

"I'm a white fox, actually. What else? You said you had questions about the business?"

"I do, I do."

"Then, let's get down to the business."

"Yes let's... Do you always work the late nights?"

"I-...Yes, I do. Aven At Night is our title." Aven felt more tired now. The questions didn't seem relevant to the subject, a bit too personal. This wacko was going to disappoint him with his crazy questions, boring questions in fact.

"I'm a new listener-first time collar."

"Oh? And how are you liking it, Ryan?"

"I love it so far, but.. you just kind of... Well, I don't mean to be a critique or anything, but you sound really tired. And I thought you sounded a lot better at the beginning, where you were more awake."

"Well, if you noticed, we slow down a little the later it gets. When the calls slow their speed, we lost some of the momentum. Sometimes it happens."

"Ahh... Well, do these late hours have negative effects on your sleep?"

"Jerry, does this effect your sleep?" He asked the question halfway into the mic. Jerry made a sure nod. "Jerry says yes, and I feel I agree with him." Aven gave a soft chuckle.

"Well that just might be your problem."

Aven made an odd face.

"I have a problem?"

"Yea, you just admitted that you were slacking in your momentum, and I think it has something to do with your sleeping." The white fox took that small idea into consideration. The nights put a big burden on him at times. All those sleepless days because the day just looked way too nice outside to sleep. His dating life even takes a hit by the reoccurring grumpiness. "I believe I have the solution." Ryan said this with confident conviction that made Aven listen closer, in simple curiosity he told himself. "Want to hear me out?" Quickly, Ryan adds, "How many times do you give your listeners a chance to help you?"

This idea of receiving help from a listener intrigued the radio DJ. There could be some entertainment value in that. When things slow down, they pick it up by switching it around. There might even be some good advice to be had.

"Yea, go ahead, Ryan. What's the answer to my problem?" Aven had to pull a long grin in the irony of the whole night's turn of events.

"Simple. You need to learn to sleep better. See, everyone thinks sleeping is just as simple as being comfortable and closing your eyes."

"Well, Ryan, sleeping is simple. I mean, everyone can sleep."

"Except people like you, who sleep irregular hours. I have an irregular method for sleep for you that just might help."

"Cool, let's hear it."

"Well, it's not easy to explain. You will have to practice it..."

"I can't sleep on the job, Ryan."

"You can have Jerry wake you up."

"He might go to sleep just listening to you... Jerry?" The mouse gave him a nod. "Okay, what the hell. I'm game."

"Good. This will be simple. Just listen to what I tell you, and you'll be out like a light." Aven, by that point, became hopeful about getting better sleep. "This is simple as breathing. That's where we start. Breathing. Let me hear you take a deep breath."

The deep vibrations of air passed over the radio waves. Ryan continued the steady-pace lesson. "That didn't sound just right, give me another." Another deep vibration sounded. "Better, but make it deeper this time." The vibration stretched out longer. "That's real good. Now do it and think about your shoulders. Concentrate about your shoulders going down." Rryan let a moment pass. "Now do the same with your legs and feet. Let them relax. Let them sink into the floor. Fluid, almost like melting. Relaxed." Another moment passed with the deep vibrations sounding every now and again. "Let that feeling travel up your body. Let your chest rise and fall, still breathing deeper and deeper, relaxing down..down..down. Let your whole body unwind and relax. Bring in those long breaths... Hold them... and release."

Pauses riddled the radio's air. Vibrations remained frequent in the background. They became more mechanical and rhythmic. "Now, imagine the sleep you want. It's what you want. And being in this deep... relaxed state, you will achieve it. Your eyes are probably heavy by now. Are your eyes heavy, Aven?"

"Yes," Aven said. His voice sounded very sleepy, unfamiliar. Some listeners thought he already fell asleep.

"Good. Let them close. Now, sleep. Continue listening to my voice, though. You understand you're completely and deeply asleep and your ears are awake. You understand because you're focusing, listening to me... to my voice. You're asleep listening to me.

"Now, I'm going to take you to a place. It's peaceful there. It has all the wonderful warm things you need in your sleep. This place belongs to me. Now, go to that place. Put your mind in this paradise that belongs to me. Put your mind there; let it sit. Let it soak up all that I have to offer to your content, listening ears. Does that place feel good?"

"Yesss...," a dull, blissful voice of a once savvy radio host replied.

"Good. Then it would be better if you just let your mind stay in that paradise. Simply think harder about that paradise, deep and relaxed still, and become one with my world, my paradise. Become one with it. You can see it.

"Listen carefull as you join and bond with my world, my paradise. For every number I count, you will fuse with that paradise. You will be one with it when I reach the number Ten. You will go deeper and deeper and be ONE with my world that belongs to me." A soft pause lets Ryan hear Aven still breathing, sounding even heavier now than before.

"Two, down deep-so relaxed. Letting yourself sink and bond in my world. Three, so hard to focus... Four, easy to let your mind rest in my world. Five, resting in paradise, content, happy, belonging to me. Six, deeper and deeper, further down... Seven, losing yourself, becoming part of the paradise, belonging to me. Eight, fusing with my paradise... belonging to me. Nine-fusing with that paradise that belong to me.. fusing and you... Ten-belong to me."

"I belong to you." The slurring zombified Aven echoed over the microphone. His breathing predictably followed.

"Good. I trust Jerry was also listening intently? Was he?"

"Yes..."

"Is he as dazed and peaceful as you, Aven?"

"Yes..."

"You can call me, Sir from now on."

"Yes, Sir."

"This is the kind of peaceful sleep you need. This is the sleep that only I can give you. Listen carefully."

"Yes, sir."

"Whenever I say Ryan's Sleep, you will sleep like you are now. You will find the peaceful world that your mind is fused to, and you will return to me. You will be mine, is that clear?"

"Yes, Sir."

"Good. Now, Ryan, you should feel like you belong to me. Tell me, do you feel that way?"

"Yes, Sir."

"Does it feel good?"

"Yes, Sir."

"Good... very good." Ryan's voice changed to a more sinister, devious quality rather than it's more melodic easy-going tone from before. "How about we take some calls?"
