Story by James Frost on SoFurry

"Are you alright?" the wolf looked at me, his soft eyes trying to peer through the facade I had so sloppily concocted. If eyes were the gateway to the soul he would have surely seen the firey inferno which burned like a blue, unquenchable flame. One that once was a bright vivid red of a happy go lucky fur, one who would gladly greet anyone and everyone he met on the street. Now the flame was a dull blue, a husk of the former flame which shone proudly to anyone who saw it.

"Yeah I-I'm fine." At that moment I wished he would question me, ask if that really was true. That I really was fine. If he had asked I would have surely broken. In truth I wasnt alright, if anyone had peered just a little farther they would have seen that. They would have seen the way I shrunk away from every touch. They would have seen me break down in panicked tears if I was overwhelmed by even the smallest problems. If a person was perceptive they would have noticed that I never held a gaze and would flinch and fidget unexpectedly.

To be honest, I was and still am suprised that people don't notice. But then again they feel safe in their own fur.

"Are you sure?" I felt my breath seize in my throat.
