Chapter 5:

Fate

Standing over me was a creature, sinister enough to send shivers down the spine of anything that was unfortunate enough to gaze upon it. Known throughout the land, as Lupo di Pura Tenebra(The Wolf of Pure Darkness), it gazed at me through glaring eyes. I cowered, looking up at a massive black shape. It's eyes, alight with a fiery red, bore into me. His eyes showed the deep hatred that was rooted within: His hate of all thing, his hate of the world and all who trod on it, and most of all, his hate of humans. Even while turned away I could feel his stare.

He dropped to a pouncing position. Ready to attack at any given moment, but he did nothing, just waited. He feigned a few quick dashes, but never made the commitment to a real attack. He seemed to enjoy this taunting of me. He appeared to get a sickening pleasure from the fear that I could not hide. I caught a flash of gray behind him. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a mysterious wolf creep up. With amazing quickness, the gray wolf pounced. He hit Lupo di Pura Tenebra, and knocked him over. His eyes that danced with a thousand devils, were replaced by sheer surprise. Losing his balance he went sliding down the icy hill that was to his right.

The Gray Wolf seized me up by the scruff of my neck. I was a big pup, but the task seemed effortless to him. In fact, the whole routine seemed mundane, almost rehearsed. Off he ran, with me dangling by my neck. He ran on for half an hour, never stopping or breaking his pace once. Finally, when he was sure we were at a safe distance he put me down. I opened my mouth to speak, but he silenced me with a stare.

We walked on, soon we reached an area of woods where some trees had fallen over a boulder and made a makeshift lean-to. There we stopped, without a word he gesture for me to follow him under cover. Inside, he lay down and closed his eyes. I mustered up my courage to say something.

"Why?" I asked, "Why did you save me? And who are you?"

He opened a sleepy eye and said, "You were staring at the very face of death, kid. You would not have survived."

"Well... thank you. I owe my life to you," I said.

"No worries. Now, what is your name pup?" he calmly said.

My voice faltered. "I am Okami." My body shaking. The adrenaline wearing off; the reality of what happened sunk in.

"A pleasure." He genuinely said.

"May I ask who you are?" I questioned timidly.

After a short pause he told me, "Steel"...
