Chapter 2

_I would not be deterred by this one's rudeness. I was more determined than ever now to learn about the strange behaviors these creatures had! I took a hidden perch in the walls of the valley they lived in, and continued watching them. My keen hunter's vision let me observe them much further away than they could notice me. They never stopped impressing me as they worked together, raising other creatures for companions, food, or to make faux coverings for their skins. They also ate the very plants that came from the ground, and did it without any hint of desperation.

For almost a month, I only left the valley to hunt for myself; I was too interested in these creatures to focus on anything else. I was left undisturbed for that month. Even though I was quite a bit larger than them, they never seemed to notice me hiding. In fact, they rarely looked skyward at all. They worked all day, every day. Very curious.

It was one day while I was observing how their chicks behaved when allowed away from their covered nests that something curious arrived._

A fancy clothed male human came, sitting astride a very lean but heavily clothed animal. Behind him came more of the lean beasts, though these were undressed and pulled carts behind them. Yet further behind the carts came a small group of humans with shiny clothes and long pointed tools. Vibra moved to observe these newcomers as the fancy man met with the man to whom she had spoken earlier. The visitor was greeted without any threat, and the spokesman seemed truly afraid of him. At a word the other humans came and began loading the carts with plants, meat, skins, and various things that Vibra figured they must have made inside their covered nests. It was fascinating to her to watch how everyone reacted to the fancy man. They seemed to fear and respect him at the same time, and were willing to do whatever he said.

The problem arose when they couldn't fill the carts. The fancy man became angry. He started shouting at the spokesman, who cowered before him and his horse. Vibra could hear the shouting clearly, the man threatened the spokesman and drew out, as she could see, a long piece of metal.

Rage, a terrible unknown rage built within her. In a fit of protectiveness that she never knew dwelt within, she leaped from her hidden perch and dove straight for the fancy man. He barely registered that Vibra was streaking toward him when she impacted. Her huge, shimmery white form stole him from his saddle and bore him to the ground. Wings flared and the immense bird-woman landed just beyond where he fell. The guards could do nothing but stand and stare in shock.

Shrieking, she lifted the fancy male by his shoulders, fully intending to throttle him then and there for daring to threaten her humans. She fixed him with a withering stare and watched as his pupils shrunk to tiny dots. The scent of soiled trousers drifted about as Vibra let him feel the keenness of her claws.

"You won't hurt my humans!" She screeched

"No!" the spokesman shouted, "Please, don't hurt our emissary! He was only doing as he was bid! I failed our lord and he was in his right!"

Claws loosed. The emissary dropped to the ground. Vibra's head swam with wonder at these people. She just could not understand. They defended their own even when they threatened each other! It made no sense! Why did they do this!

She looked down at the piteous man. He cowered from the monster looming over him, horrified at her stature and power. Vibra had felt righteous, she felt like she could take the man out right now and defend this whole place from anyone who would dare attack... but the humans didn't want it! That's when she noticed that she was surrounded by the humans with their spears pointing at her.

Suddenly she whirled around, throwing her wings wide and swept the humans aside. Her size lent far more power than any of them could handle and they scattered like grain. A quick decision made her want not to anger the humans any further, but she obviously could not simply drive these new people off. Pulling the "emissary" to his feet, Vibra fixed him with another hard stare.

"I don't know what more you want with these people, but I have decided to protect them. I have watched over them for several moons now and I claim them as mine. I tell you, that if they have things more to give to you that I will help them, but no one shall harm them while I am here. Now call off your shiny men and let us all be."

The emissary considered the giant bird-woman with some gravity. He knew there was no way to win this through battle; his retainers were not even nearly drilled well enough. Instead he put his political mind to work. Finally, he had a plan, and then he worked up the nerve to speak.

"They have failed to hunt enough game for the prince's desired levy. The law states that I am to exact punishment if the needs are not met. Looking at you, I have no doubt as to why they are lacking game now; you must eat a whole deer each day to sustain your bulk. If you do wish to protect them, I'd suggest you not interfere with the hunting around here. Now I'll take what I have back to the palace and report all this," The man looked past Vibra to the spokesman, "and I'm certain, we will expect you to make this up to us and more NEXT time." He turned back to Vibra. "Throwing your weight around won't stop us. I don't know if you know this bird, but there are hundreds and thousands of us humans. You can't win a fight with all of us, even if you could defeat everyone who is here now. There are so many more, and many who are better trained to fighting creatures like you. Think of that next time you want to help and protect mere peasants. Next time you do, it could get you all killed."

With that he turned on his heel, mounted his horse, and barked orders to depart with what they had. Vibra watched them roll away, completely dumbfounded with the arrogance that man showed even after how scared he was. She just didn't understand. She couldn't...
