Chapter 1

_I can still remember my early life. My people live very much like their feral counterparts and so I was born in a nest high in the mountains. My mother was there when I hatched so that I always knew her face. I was told later on that I had a sister also, but I don't remember ever seeing her. Mother taught me all I knew about how to stay alive, though I know now that she left out some extremely important details concerning how to truly live in the world.

She never told me her name, but she gave me mine. My name is Vibra, for the way my feathers have shined ever since they came in. My white feathers would positively shimmer with color whenever I was wet, they still do actually.

Looking back, it was so very horribly dull in the beginning. There was nothing to do save eat what my mother brought and learn when my mother spoke. Nothing to do when I was alone, and soon mother ran out of things to teach me. Luckily, this was about the time my feathers had come fully.

I flew immediately, at such I was a prodigy. There was something odd about me, though as I flew far and wide. I had nothing but instinct and teachings to guide me. Perhaps I was bored. I wanted to see beyond the mountains and travel until my eyes beheld something my mother didn't know.

How was I to know that my travels would lead me to discover humans?_

Humans. Vibra had never beheld such things. Truly these were the sights she had longed for, so very different were they. They were so curious. No feathers, soft mouths, significantly smaller than she was, and the males so close in size and color to the females one couldn't tell them apart! Another oddity Vibra noticed was that the females seemed to have large flight muscles, a curious thing since she never imagined they could fly in the first place. They were all so close to one another that it intrigued her. As her mother had told her, the roc-folk were quite solitary. Truly in all her life Vibra had only ever seen two of her own kind, her mother and another just in passing.

The nests were another interest, as they lay all about in the valley floor. They were closed on top save for an odd hole which sometimes produced clouds. Whole broods of humans lived within these nests, along with several possessions. The humans tended feral animals in this valley also, but kept them out of their nests. All animals, that is, except some of the odd wolves that some of the nestlings played with. A curious race of folk indeed.

True to her odd ways, Vibra decided one day that she should meet them. They were, after all, more open than her own folk. Somewhere deep inside she was not satisfied to lead a normal life as her mother described. She wanted to walk amongst these folk and learn those things that humans knew.

Their first reaction was... quite less than a warm welcome. When the humans of the village saw the creature, half again as tall as their tallest man, they balked. When they caught a glance at the razor sharp talons, strong ripping beak, and powerful stare of the massive birdfolk they quaked in fear. The large predator walked along the path to their homes completely undaunted, sky-clad, and with the angry look of a predator. The women and children made for their homes, apparently hoping that the stone and thatch would shield them from the monster's onslaught. The men rallied together, grabbing whatever tools were at hand to defend themselves. The women even stood at the doors wielding skillets and knives once their children were securely inside.

For all the knowledge her mother imparted, there was always the definite understanding that if a predator attacked the nest, one that couldn't be driven away, a mother would leave her chicks rather than risk her own safety. Mothers, she always said, can always make more chicks. Now here were the males and females together to defend their nests and the chicks!

Vibra tried to look as harmless as she could and even attempted a few of their words. The language her mother taught her was very close to theirs, but some of the sounds and colloquialisms were difficult to say.

"H...hallao," she tried, finding the end of the word very difficult with her rigid beak. Determined to show her intentions were benign, she continued with trying to say the first few words she heard them say to each other each day. "Good marning too you."

The men shared looks of astonishment. They whispered to and fro, hardly daring to take their eyes of the imposing raptor. After a hurried argument one of the males stepped forward... or rather was prodded forward by his fellows.

Vibra could see immediately that this man was afraid of her, though she was making no threatening movements. A pitchfork was held shakily in his white knuckled grip, but was it held with aggressive intent? How she bemoaned his lack of feathers! She just wasn't sure what he was thinking!

"Y- you..." He stuttered from his soft mouth. Swallowing his fear and stealing a glance back at his own family he gathered his resolve, "We d-do not want outsiders here. If you are of the kinder folk you will leave us in peace. We do not have enough to give you lodging or food. If you plan to try and take anything we will fight you. I... I just want my people to be safe."

"No... pleaze" Vibra begged in a roughly intelligible way, "I want to knaow about humans."

"Please, find some other lot to spend your time on," the speaker replied, growing bolder as he saw there was no threat, "We have too much to do to answer questions."

"But... pleaze?"

"C'mon lads," the speaker said, turning his back on Vibra, "She be no threat to us. Back to your works and your homes!"

Vibra stood, quite literally, crestfallen in the midst of the road. The humans returned to their toil and their play, only stopping to steal glances at the huge bird that had come to ask them questions. Seeing that she would get nothing from the direct approach, Vibra turned and flew away from the village.
