In the history of Earth people and animals are constantly finding their way into The Betweens. The people who have traveled never have made it back to earth. Some never wanted to, and some never wanted anything more. The Betweens is a place filled with things from every world connected to it. It holds new technology, music, art literature and living creatures. Some creatures carbon based and some geo based. The strangest thing in The Betweens would have to be what they call chi powers, something the people of Earth would call magic.
Sometimes the barriers between the worlds are weakened, sometimes caused by a celestial event other times it's caused by magic. When these barriers are weakened it's possible to travel between worlds and see the wonders that the other world holds. The Betweens was never supposed to exist, it was the side effect of a chi spell that went awry. The spell, if done correctly, would have created a permanent portal between two worlds. Halfway through the spell the caster was killed and the spell never finished. The chi was set loose and traveled into different worlds. One person from every world had unknowingly taken in the chi, whenever one of those people dreamed the chi would create what they dreamt between worlds. Thus The Betweens were created.
Nobody had ever known about The Betweens until a pair of chi users had seen land while traveling to an alternate world. They saw a vast landscape where it was once empty. It took years to create a spell to get there but now almost every world has a way into The Betweens. Every world except Earth. The people of Earth had never wanted to travel to other dimensions, they wanted to stay there where they understood things.
Nowadays the people of Earth don't even know how to use magic properly, they use it for things like party tricks and entertainment. Most believe it to be a myth that magic even still existed. That was until a teenage boy named Varian changed that.
