Blue Glow

Prologue

He loved her. He loved her so much that it hurt sometimes. Was it worth it?

He decided that it was, sitting up in the bed and gazing down at her. She looked so peaceful and innocent sleeping there, both hands under her head as she lay on her side.

I'm so lucky. How did it happen again? ...Ah, that's right, I remember. I was sitting there, eating alone, when she walked up to me. The Lighting of the locally owned cafe' never seemed so beautiful until it was reflected in those perfect, blue orbs. I'll never forget what she said.

"Is this seat taken?"

It seemed such a silly way to open the conversation, but it was also very simple and to the point. It must have been fate that we were both stood up at the same place, and at the same time no less! Her long blonde hair seemed to billow around her head like a delicate border, flipping slightly in the light breeze from the open window and the cieling fans. I told her she could sit down if she liked.

"So, what's your story?" I asked as she slid in her seat towards the table.

"...My date never came. I'm feeling down and just needed someone to talk to. Is that okay?"

"I don't mind. I've helped many a person with this kind of thing. I'm terribly sorry to hear that has happened to you, but the funny thing is, the same thing happened to me too."

"...Really?"

"Yeah, no joke!"

She went on to tell me she has been living alone for a while, just paying the bills, letting time dwindle away. She wanted to go to school, but wasn't one hundred percent sure what to do with herself. We spent that night talking and crying together. We didn't really eat anything.

She came back to my place, a small studio apartment that I couldn't really afford. The rent was about seven hundred and fifty a month, and I was only making nine dollars an hour, part time. It would only be mine for the remainder of the month. Luckily, I had already found some student housing that I could afford. Just wished I could afford the schooling to go with it.

"God, she is so beautiful," he whispered to himself. It must have been a little louder than he thought, for she stirred slightly. It was then that he noticed the wetness of tears under her eyes. She must have known this was coming.

"I know it's hard, but I'll be back one day," he whispered, choking up slightly. "I'll be back and we can live our dreams together!"

He had packed some necessities over the last week to prepare, and had already written a letter. Among the things was a small picture of her and a little charm she had given to him for their anniversary. He placed the letter on the table in the kitchen as he left, sniffling and stopping for a moment to look upon what he had to leave to protect.

"If I wasn't such a screw-up they would have never caught me. ...I'll be back, I promise! I promise!" he said quietly, trying to convince himself that it was true. He had already changed their number and the listed address that he was living at. As far as anyone knew, he was living back at that old studio apartment, still alone. Soon enough, the latter would be true...

I love you, Angela. I always have and always will. I was discovered, just like you always worried about, but it's okay. I will come back one day and we can live our dreams together! I promise! Please, wait for me! Please! You are everything to me, and I cannot let you get involved or hurt by my stupid mistake. I will not let them take me away. I will be back!

Forever yours,

David.
