Chapter 7

Danny

Me and Michael were in the gym after school, setting up some of the decorations and picking music. A few of the girls from Leadership were there, mostly avoiding eye contact with us and trying to just get the job done. After a while of repairing the horrid suggestions made by Leadership for music, as well as firing the DJ and writing a playlist to replace him, finally me and Michael got some alone time.

I'll admit, it was kind of awkward bringing it up, but I really hoped he'd been lying as much as I had been at lunch, "So do the others really think we have crushes on each other?"

He shrugged, "I guess. You'd think Pandora would get that two gay guys doesn't automatically make a relationship anymore than her and Chris do."

I laughed, "Yeah." There was a long, awkward pause as Michael painted a banner covering the bleachers, "So, are you going to prom?"

"It's our last school dance, after this it's over, we'll have missed out on everything. Anyways, I gotta make sure the decorations look good with the lighting, and that people aren't being stupid."

"Yeah, I should probably check to make sure this playlist works with the mood you're setting up."

"Is it better than their playlist from before?"

"Do you really need to ask that question?"

"Then trust me, it'll work. That's the goal here: make this dance worth going to. Even if the people suck, the environment won't."

"Sounds like a plan." Another long pause. I wanted so badly to just ask him, but some part of me told me it wasn't allowed, or that he'd say no. "So, who are you going with?"

"Uhh... I was just gonna go by myself. You know, the guys in this school aren't really... how do I word it nicely..."

"Attractive?"

"Or interesting."

"Or gay."

"Yeah, that's the right word."

Pause. Come on, he agrees, there's no one else in the school! "So... What would you think about maybe going with m-"

Isaac suddenly appeared from behind us, "Hey, brought you dorks dinner." He set a paper bag on the tarp and looked at us, "What?"
