Chapter 1

Daniel

Touch

_ _ I stepped off the bus and looked across the courtyard.

_ I remember_

_ Touch_

It was still the same, and I waded through a crowd of people to get to the front doors.

_ Pictures came with_

_ Touch_

I quickly got to first period, and pulled my chair out to sit next to my friend.

_ A painter in my mind_

_ Tell me what you see..._

I pulled my earbuds out and put away my Walkman, glaring at the board in annoyance. I turned to Michael and gestured at the board, "You know, you'd think after having me for three and half years, Mrs. Miller would have learned to not use light colors on the whiteboard."

He shook his head, "Naw, she knows we'll always sit next to each other, and anyways, the rest of us with functioning cones can see that clear as day."

I scoffed, "My cones are functional, it's just my retinas!"

"Your retinas are stupid then." He held up the piece of paper he'd been scribbling on, and I could barely make out what it was beyond a blur of shades of gray. He pointed to a spot, "What color is this?"

I glanced at his arm, which- according to everyone else- was blindingly colorful. All I ever saw was a white wolf with grayscales on his shoulders and back. Having PE with a wolf like Michael has its perks, and it doesn't take color to see he's an attractive person. I glanced at his arm and found a spot that looked about the same shade. I confidently raised my chin at him, "Blue!"

I pointed at the spot on his arm, and he raised an eyebrow, "Dan, those aren't even the same color, and neither of them is blue."

I shook my head, laughing a bit, "You try living in a world of gray. Colors mean nothing, it's all about sound!"

"Yeah, you're not gonna win that argument. I'm tone deaf, and have functional retinas. And, from an evolutionary standpoint, color is just a bit more important."

"But without music you're socially alienating yourself from the rest of the world."

He just stared at me, "I'm a gay, rainbow wolf who makes art; alienation can't possibly hurt."
