Chapter 8

School Days

January 9, 1892

I had high expectations today. I made it a point to hang around the house. I so wanted to see Charlie acting "girly". She never showed. Instead from what Bobby told me they played together instead. So, rather than get a good laugh out of Charlie I played with Lilly. She really enjoys it when I set her in my lap and brush her hair. She seems to have trouble with the back and usually asks Ma or Banit to help her. She has the curliest ringlets. I suppose they have a habit of getting tangled.

By noon I needed to walk around. So after eating lunch with a very happy Lilly I set off wandering around. I was out, aimlessly carousing around when I heard someone call my name. I turned and was attacked with arms hugging me and lips kissing me. That's really not a bad way to say hello. I had to pull her head back to see who she was. She was Cora. She'd just come from Chicago. I almost asked her what she was doing here but then I remembered her letter. She did say that she was aiming to be here after the first of the year. I helped her with her luggage and got her checked into her hotel. She said that she'll stay there until she finds a permanent place to live. She hugged and kissed me again. She then said that she missed me. Banit and Lilly are going to be "thrilled". She said that she wanted to surprise Ma and me and so she didn't telegram when she'd arrive. She was very excited to go see Ma and everyone. I guess she needs to learn. Learn not to surprise Ma.

Cora and I snuck over to The Green Pasture. Ma was glad to see me she said that they are very busy and asked if I'd help tend bar. I agreed but I was just distracting her. Cora snuck up behind her and hugged her tight. That scared Ma but when she turned and saw that it was Cora, the tables turned. Ma picked her up and hugged her. Cora looked like she was going to break in half. Ma was so happy she didn't set Cora down until she made it all the way to the bar on the other side of the main floor. It took a good minute for Cora to recover. I leaned over and told her that's why we don't surprise Ma. All she could do was nod. Ma was so excited that she forgot all about working. I meandered over to the bar and helped out over there. Melanie came up and asked me who she is. I didn't think much of it so I told her. She huffed and went back to sweeping. Oh well, I went back to work too. Ma dragged Cora up to the bar and the three of us were discussing everything that had happened while she was gone. It was then that Ma blurted out, "Cora, please marry Flint. He needs a good woman to set him straight." Cora smiled, jumped up and threw her arms around me saying, "Of course! I'd love too!" I laughed and played along. I picked Cora up and swung her around asking her where she'd like to go for our honeymoon and how many kids would she like to have. She was about to say something when a broom dropped and a certain shark called me a womanizer and ran out. I suppose she thought we were serious. Ma might have been. I had to go find her.

Melanie is surprisingly fast. I found her huddled in the empty lot next to the general store. She looked rather angry. I sat next to her and didn't say a thing. It was nearly five minutes before she said anything. She looked at me and yelled, "Well? Aren't you gonna say something or what?" I chuckled and told her that we were just playing and were not being serious. She looked at her feet and said, "I know that, I just don't know why it upset me." I leaned over smiled and asked, "'cause you like me?" She glared at me saying, "Not a chance in hell, pervert." She went on to say that she thought of Banit and how she likes me and that she felt sorry for her. We had to work out a lot of details. I can't remember ever talking that much about me and my relationships, and the fact that I love flirting even if I don't mean it or that it gets me in trouble sometimes. We talked for a while before returning to The Pasture. She quietly went back to work. She still called me a womanizer under her breath. I guess that means she's feeling better.

We worked the afternoon when Lilly and Banit showed up. Melanie dragged Banit off to talk to her. I'm guessing it's about earlier. Lilly hurried upstairs to change. We had a surprise visit from the Mearns. Elle is looking very pregnant. She said that she's stopped drinking but that they're taking a break from their house for a while and wanted to hear Lilly sing again. Edgar said that they've nearly finished it. All that's left is putting up the wall paper and bringing in their furniture. They went on to say that they'd like to have us over for dinner once they're finished. I said that we'd love to. Edgar shook my hand and thanked me for helping them. I smiled and said not to worry about it. I got them a table and we sat down for drinks. Elle asked what kind of saloon this is. She was hinting at the fact that only women work here and that usually means that some could be bought by the hour. I told her that Ma's very protective and that draws a lot of women to work here. The upstairs is private as a few of the Girls live there and the rules are simple, treat it like it's your home and absolutely no prostituting. Ma runs a clean establishment. Elle looked relieved and said that she was worried about Lilly working in a place like this. We were having a nice chat when a rather angry drunk threw his glass and demanded that the dancing girls come out. He must not have been here before. People scattered as Ma approached him. One whack and he was out. Ma carried him out by his belt and threw him into the street. Everyone laughed. One of the regulars jumped up on stage and announced that he was taking bets on how many men Ma will bounce tonight. That started up roaring of bettors. Ma stood by the bar with her arms crossed and huffed. Edgar stared at her and said, "Remind me to never get on her bad side." I couldn't help but laugh. I warned him to be sure to call her Ma and not Mrs. Arliss. Not long after that Lilly came out to start her performance. Mrs. Harcourt Jr. started playing, Lilly started singing, and Joey and Alice started dancing. It was a great show. Banit was milling about talking to people here and there when she caught the eye of a young rabbit. He started flirting with her but she walked off. He followed her and kept up his flirting. Banit eventually tired of this and told him off. He still didn't get the hint. I couldn't help but notice all the eyes on him. Banit slapped him and stormed off. He gave up and sat down at the bar with a new drink. He caused a lot of groans. Things settled back down. The rest of the night went on without a hitch. The finally tally was one. No one won, except the man taking the bets. Perhaps I should start a pool. How many men does Ma bounce on a Saturday night? That could be very profitable.

Edgar and Elle stuck around until the end of Lilly's show. They told her what a wonderful singer she is and how much they enjoyed it. Lilly gave a sheepish smile. I said my goodbyes to the Mearns and to everyone else at The Pasture and walked Lilly and Banit home. I asked Banit why she slapped that rabbit earlier. She said that she didn't mind his flirting but it wasn't sweet and fun like mine. I ruffled the feathers on top of her head and put my arm around her shoulders. There were angry bunny noises on the other side of me so I put my other arm around Lilly as well.

Post Script: Today was a long day. Fun though.

January 10, 1892

I had a chat with the Preacher today. I told him how I've noticed that he's been nice to me the last couple of months. He said that he figures that I've suffered enough and that I'm not that bad of a person. I told him that I think I liked it better when he hated me. His being nice just seems...unnatural. We both laughed. As I left I told him that I'll find a way to get things back to normal. He waved and said that I had better not.

Back home we had a few chores to take care of, a lot of cleaning mostly. Banit and Lilly were downstairs cleaning while I was charged with taking care of the bedding upstairs. That means fluffing the mattresses and airing them out. The weather is great today so I opened the windows and stood the mattresses up. I accidentally found Lilly's diary. Curiosity got the better of me and so I opened it to a random page. It just happened to be her wedding plans for us. Her plans call for a big chapel, and I'm to ride in on a black horse while wearing a white tuxedo to match her white dress. So on and so on. She wants us to have nine kids and live happily ever after. I couldn't read anymore. It was dizzyingly girly and I suddenly felt very embarrassed for having read it. I did read one thing though. She really wants me to call her Lilibel. I'll have to sneak that in sometime and see how she reacts. That could be fun. I put it back so that she won't know that I read it.

We finished up our cleaning and got things back in place. Really we keep the house fairly clean so there's not much heavy cleaning needed. We were resting on the couch when Bobby came in. He had to rake the yard. He sat down and joined us. We were all half asleep when he mentioned that school starts tomorrow. We all sat up and stared at him. I asked Banit when college starts. She had to check the letter. It starts tomorrow as well. We didn't remember the date. I was thinking that it started next week not tomorrow! We scrambled to get things ready. I helped Banit get her things organized and ready for tomorrow. We were starting to panic when Grace and Nessa came by. They came to see if Banit was ready. I was very glad to have them here. We told them what happened and they laughed. They said that Banit won't need much on the first day. At Tulane University, the first day is more for introductions and so that the students can find their classes. No teacher gives lessons on it. That makes things much easier. They said that she'll need a notebook and writing supplies. We got her situated and calmed down. I've never wanted to hug those two more than I did right then. I thanked them. We went over her schedule. Grace said that Banit somehow managed to get a few good teachers. We talked about what to expect and what to do. That really helped a lot. I don't know who was more anxious Banit or me. We had them stay for dinner and afterwards Banit and I walked them home. We had a quiet evening of making sure that everyone new who was going to be where and what they're all doing. I promised that I'd take Banit to college the first few days to make sure that she knows where to be. I don't think Banit will sleep much tonight.

January 11, 1892

We all woke up rather early today. Banit is really nervous. That's fully understandable. Today her whole life changes again. She could hardly eat breakfast but we forced her to. Grace and Nessa came by to take Banit to college. I told them that I'll be tagging along as well. As we were leaving, Ma and the kids all hugged Banit wishing her good luck. We made our way to the trolley stop but were stopped by Mr. Harcourt who had to come give Banit a hug and told her that if she ever needs help not to hesitate to come to him. She smiled and thanked him. He snuck some candy in her pocket as she left. He had the proudest look on his face. You'd swear that it was his daughter's first day at college. I think I can understand him though. I'm so very proud of her too. Mr. Brooks and Henry met us at the trolley stop to wish her luck. Henry said that he's learning to read now too because of her. The trolley came and cut their conversation short. They saw her off and waved to her as we rolled off. It was going to be a somewhat long ride so I had a chance to talk to Banit. I asked, "Banit did you see that?" She looked at me quizzically. I continued, "All these people coming to wish you luck on your first day. With all of their well wishes and support, you won't have anything to worry about. If you ever need help, I'm here for you at any time. If I can't then Mr. Harcourt or Jr. or any multitude of people are more than willing to help however you need it. You should just relax and enjoy your time at college. You have great friends and a supporting family. You are set. Moreover, you are very, very smart. Just listen to your teachers and keep up with your work. You're going to have a great time." Grace and Nessa joined in saying how fun college is and that they'll meet up everyday for lunch and traveling to and from college. She leaned against me and thanked me. She was nearly in tears. We soon arrived and I walked her to the gate. Grace said that they'll meet up there after classes to go home and that they'll meet for lunch as well. I hugged Banit and wished her luck one last time before she left. She headed off to her first class. She turned and looked back at me. I waved, she tripped. After she picked herself up and disappeared into the main building I wandered off. There's not much for me to do in this part of town at this time. So I figured I'd just look around and see what's in the area.

I found a nice park, a couple of nice stores and restaurants. I quickly became bored. This place is great for the college students however it's not so good for me. I couldn't find any dice games and all of the pretty women around here are taken or are too busy with college to entertain me. I had just about given up hope when I met him, captain of the boxing team. He didn't like me accidentally bumping him. He stopped to harass me even though I apologized. Boy did he ever make a mistake. He pushed me and told me to stay out of his way. I smiled and said, "Kinda hard getting out of your way when you're in your own damn way." He looked at his buddies, pushed me again and told me I have a smart mouth. "Yup" I said as I smiled even more. He pushed me yet again and said, "I'm gonna knock that smile right off your face!" I asked if he was compensating for anything as I gestured that he has a small penis. That really angered him. He asked if I was looking for trouble. I said "Maybe I am." Then he asked, "Do you know who I am?" I replied, "No, do you know who I am?" "No" "Good! Now I don't have to worry about anything." He really got mad when I poked his nose. He reared back to hit me, I laid into him. I don't think he's ever been in a real fight. I baited him giving him all kinds of openings to hit me. He never could. I kept harassing him and teasing him. He finally got tired and was about to give up so I gave him a little love tap that put him to sleep. His buddies carried him off. I waved and cutely said "Bye-bye!" as they hurried off. He should not have skipped class today. After all that excitement I was rather hungry. I had lunch and a found me a nice place under a tree for a nap.

It was near two o'clock when I woke. I slowly wandered back to the college. Banit, Grace and Nessa were there at the gate when I arrived. Banit looked a bit mad at me. She asked if I got into a fight today. She said that everyone on the campus is talking about how the captain of the boxing team was beaten up by a fancy otter at a nearby store. She said that everyone is saying that I had a gang and was picking on him. I told her what happened and that I was alone, but I was picking on him. We were talking about it when he came out. He had a black eye and was surrounded by sympathetic girls. He was not happy to see me. I smiled and asked if he'd like to tell them what really happened. He got very nervous. I "encouraged" him some more. He finally broke down and told the truth. Suddenly those girls wouldn't have a thing to do with him. I pulled him off to talk to him privately. I told him that Banit and her friends were under my protection and that if anything happened to them, his fault or not, that I'd hunt him down and destroy him. From his whimper I could tell that he understood me. I left him there and escorted Banit and her friends back home. Banit told me that she may have made another friend in one of her classes. She also said that her professors seemed really nice and smart. I had her tell me all about her day. She was very excited about it and had a great time. She said that she can't wait to go back tomorrow.

Lilly and Bobby beat us home. Then again their school is just down the street. Bobby was mad that he already had homework. Lilly was glad to see all of her friends again. We all gathered around the dining table and talked about our day. Lilly pinched me when she heard about me getting into a fight. I tell you, I'm starting to fear those pinches of hers, they really hurt! Bobby needed a bit of help with his arithmetic, Nessa volunteered to help him. I think she just wanted to hug him. She sat him down in her lap and squeezed him tightly. I do believe that Bobby enjoyed that. It wasn't long before he finished it and he thanked Nessa for her help. She smiled. Charlie came to play soon after. Her hair was in ribbons. Bobby saw that and said that the ribbons looked nice on her. She blushed a little before running off to play. I turned and looked at the girls at the table. I said, "That Charlie is adorable." Lilly nearly squealed in delight and that was the topic of the evening. She had to tell all about how Charlie came to her to learn how to be girly. She also said that they've been meeting secretly here and there whenever they could. This was beginning to be too much of girl talk for me so I retreated to the couch to read.

That's pretty much all that we did this evening. Grace and Nessa stayed for dinner again. Nessa would not let Bobby go. Perhaps he should not have worn the bowtie that Charlie made for him. I bet that made her happy though. He's made a habit of wearing it every now and then. He has also figured out how to tie it and make it look good.

January 12, 1892

I escorted Banit and company to college again today. Today's also the first day of real classes. I so hope that she does well. Banit was busy talking with her friends so I just watched the town pass by the trolley windows. Strange thing happened at the gate. After the girls left for their classes "captain" came up to me and apologized for yesterday. He said that he thought about it a lot yesterday and realized that he was at fault. He was being genuine. I shook his hand and told him not to worry about it as I really was out looking for trouble. He said that he's never been hit that hard before. He wanted to know my secret. I said that a good punch starts in the feet. Plant them firm as you strike and to punch through the target not into him. He thought about it and thanked me for the advice before hurrying off. I guess he's not so bad of a kid. He just needed an attitude adjustment.

I didn't feel like hanging around the campus area so I headed off to the seedier parts of town. I ended up back in the red light district. Since I was there I figured I stop by and check on that girl that got cut up. She was doing well, all things considered. She said that a surgeon was able to sew up the cut on her face and said that she should only have a small scar. She also said that her Madam has given her all the time off that she needs so that she heals well. That's surprising for a Madam. They're usually very cutthroat and would have dropped her as soon as she was hurt. I ran out of things to talk about and so I left in search of other things to pass the time.

I can't find anything to do that doesn't require work! Damn! Oh well, that's probably what I get for the life I live.

Today has been fairly slow for me. I'm bored out of my mind and it's only two o'clock. I'm slowly making my way back to the college to pick up Banit. I can really use the company. I can't believe I'm saying this but I'm a bit lonely. I've gotten so used to being surrounded by people that I can't quite remember what I did before.

I beat Banit to the gate. She was excited to see me but looked tired. Grace and Nessa weren't far behind. Banit said that college is hard but fun and she learned a lot of new things today. We made our way to the trolley stop as she told me all about her day. I think she'll do just fine once she adjusts. She said that everyone was so surprised to find out that she's an Indian. They all wanted to know everything about her. Banit looked embarrassed but flattered at the same time. She went on to say that there are a lot of clubs, societies and sororities that want her to join but she doesn't know what they are. We were discussing them when Grace kept giggling to Nessa about something. I asked them what was so funny. They said that Banit needs to tell me. Banit tried to bury her head in embarrassment. She said that she tripped and fell into a passing teacher and knocked him into the ladies room. It was occupied and all the girls screamed and ran out. He thought that she did that on purpose. She looked up at me wanting some kind of reassurance but I was trying way to hard not to laugh. She whined a bit and hid her face in her hands. Poor girl, I hugged her and said that it'll be alright. Grace and I laughed and laughed. Nessa smiled that dopey smile of hers. I'm not sure she knows what's going on. Grace said that they wanted to help Banit study and to work on her homework with her. I thanked them and offered to let them stay the night if they wanted.

We arrived home just as Lilly and Bobby did. Nessa chased Lilly around the house for a couple of laps before she caught her. I wonder when Lilly will give up and stop running? Still, it's good for a laugh. Inside we got started on homework. As usual Bobby was quick to finish his and even quicker to change his clothes and go play. Lilly took a bit longer. She needed help with her arithmetic again. Banit's work was very much more difficult than what I thought it'd be. She seems to be managing it though. Her current classes are much the same as regular high school classes just harder. From what I understand they want to make sure that the students have the basics down before they start teaching the more specialized courses. That's a good plan. When I went I was more or less thrown into the fray. I could have used some more help on Arithmetic and social studies before I started on some of those more difficult classes.

After we finished with studies Banit was tired so she took a nap. Grace, Nessa, Lilly and I had tea and talked about different things. Lilly was telling us about a boy at school when there was a knock at the door. Charlie had come for more "girl" lessons. I took the cue to leave and said that I'll keep an eye out for Bobby and stall him until dinner time. Charlie thanked me. Good Lord! She can be so damn cute when she's not running wild. Bobby had better be good to her or I'm going to be mad at him. As I left I caught a bit of today's lesson, ribbons and lace. I wandered over to The Pasture and enjoyed a good beer or two. Ma said that I looked very happy. I guess I am. I grabbed a table and started up a poker game. I broke even but I had fun. Tristan came in and joined us. That deer comes and goes like the wind. We played a couple of rounds when I heard Ma nearly die laughing. I asked her what was so funny. Ma said that Melanie asked me who my friend was. She was then shocked to hear that Tristan is a girl. Melanie got mad and said that girls shouldn't wear pants and a gunbelt. She stormed off. I looked at Tristan who was pulling at her pants looking confused. She asked me if there was something wrong with them. I shook my head and said that they're just fine. She shrugged and continued playing. Before too long it was getting close to dinnertime and I did promise that I'd keep my eye open for Bobby.

I hurried home and bumped into Bobby and Will. They were on their way back and were still horsing around. I saw that Charlie was just leaving so I distracted Bobby and Will by mussing their hair and starting a wrestling match. Charlie saw this and ran off waving to me. The boys continued to play outside while Lilly finished dinner. I helped with the dishes afterwards.

I think that tomorrow I'll let Banit come home without me. She'll be with Grace and Nessa, and she's a smart girl anyways. I'll see her off though.

January 13, 1892

I saw Banit to the trolley stop and saw her off. She waved to me as the trolley pulled away. Grace and Nessa sat next to her. Grace mocked her by waving dramatically. Since I don't have anything to do today, I think I'll just laze about.

I napped until noon then ventured out in search of lunch. I went by one of my favorite restaurants. The food's alright but what I like in one of the waitresses. She's very prudish but likes me and has a lot of personality. She's a lot of fun to tease. When I walked in I saw her putting some menu's back in the holder. I patted her backside and said that I found my lunch. She nearly decked me but once she saw who was groping her she nearly jumped up into my arms. She said that she's missed me and that I need to come by more often. I agreed but only if they'd get a better cook. The cook heard me and said that for that I'm getting only half of my order. I smiled and said, "Oh, That'll make it much better!" He called a son of a bitch and threatened me with a knife. I spent most of the early afternoon there, mainly harassing everyone. I left after eating and headed over to the police station to see if there are any good bounties or other such prospects. That and maybe to harass Luke a bit. He's been so preoccupied with Edna that I haven't had the chance to tease him. It's a shame to admit it but I miss the kid. I really wouldn't have minded if he had gotten close to Banit, but she had other plans.

Luke is still out visiting Edna's family. They said that he's due back next week. Well, damn. I guess that's out of the question. I did find a couple of decent bounties. One has my attention. A bank robber escaped from jail and has a $2000 reward for his capture. He's believed to have run to Baton Rouge and is wanted dead or alive. $2000 alive, $1000 dead, that means that he's hidden the money he stole and they want to know where it is. If I can get him and glean the location from him I could stand to make a good bit of money here. He's a gator that goes by Eloi Bernard. He's got family near Elbow Bayou. I'll head that way next week. If nothing else it should be fun. I enjoyed Baton Rouge last time I rolled through there.

After all that I went home. I laid a trap for Lilly. I hid behind the door and as soon as she was inside I jumped out yelled and picked her up, swinging her around. She screamed and kicked until I sat her down. She was so mad she chased me around the house trying to pinch me. Bobby helped her by grabbing hold of my leg. I ended up wrestling around with those two until Banit came home. She got jealous and joined in. Three on one is not good odds. I had no choice but to surrender. We laughed for a long time. After that we finished homework. Banit's was difficult but she finished it fairly quickly. She said that Grace and Nessa had a lot and so they went home after they got off the trolley. Bobby ran off to play. This time though he caught Charlie so she ran off with him. I was left there with Lilly and Banit. I couldn't think of anything to do so I started picking on Lilly. I'd pull on her ears lightly, poke her ribs, and tickle her neck. I did the same to Banit. Before too long we were in a full on tickle fight again. I tried to crawl away but Banit sat on my shoulders and pulled my arms back. Lilly took the opportunity to sit on the back of my knees and tickle my feet. Why my feet! There the one place that drives me crazy! I was in tears from laughing so hard. Lilly seemed strangely satisfied after that. I asked her what made her so happy. She gave me a rather evil looking grin and said, "I found your weakness." That terrifies me to no end.

I cooked dinner tonight. Banit is still amazed that I can cook. She asked me why I don't cook more often. I replied that I don't mind cooking but that I like their cooking more that I do my own. She smiled and fidgeted a bit. I think that made her happy. After dinner Lilly helped me with dishes while Banit studied for her classes tomorrow. Every now and then she'd come and ask me what a word means or what this other thing is. Really I'm surprised that she's able to keep up. I don't know who they were talking about when they said having bird brains are a bad thing. If more people had half the brains that she does the world would be a much better place, if not a clumsier one.

January 14, 1891

Ma's off today. She's nearly demanded that she's going with Banit to college today. I guess that means I don't have anything to do today, and I think that's exactly what I'll do, nothing.

I napped, ate lunch and napped some more. I think we have some weather moving in, it's been getting cloudy and humid. Oh well.

Lilly and Bobby were home first today. Lilly actually finished her homework first for a change. Bobby wasn't far behind though. They finished about the time that Ma and Banit arrived. Ma said that the campus is impressive and that she looked around at everything. Banit had a little bit of her homework to do but not much. She finished it and took a small nap. Ma got started on dinner as soon as she changed out of her good clothes. At dinner I told them about me leaving for Baton Rouge for a week or so. Lilly asked me if I could just get a regular job around here. Bobby nodded in agreement. Ma huffed and said, "That ain't happenin'. E're time that danged otter gets a job, sumpin' happens and trouble starts up agin. Believe you me! The last thing this town needs is Flint gettin' a regular job." I'm ashamed to admit it but she's right. When I worked for Mr. Harcourt I stopped it from getting robbed by beating up the robber. His buddies didn't like that so they set the store on fire. When I worked for a bank as a security guard I shot a robber that just happened to be the mayor's grandson and nearly started a small war. I was a telegraph runner, thwarted a train heist by running to the next station and sending for help. Both telegraphers were later killed by the gang. While away at college I had a job as a clerk, I saved a woman from getting raped. In retribution the rapist's family destroyed the store I worked at. It does seem that I have that kind of luck. Then again, I also don't want a regular job. I'm having too much fun as is. After all, if I had a regular job I wouldn't have met Lilly, Bobby, and Banit. Lilly asked if my getting into trouble is why I don't work at The Pasture very often. Ma laughed and said that's exactly why.

We talked about what I'm going to do in Baton Rouge. I had to promise that even if it means not catching the bad guy that I make sure to come back in one piece. I guess that's fair enough.

After dinner I tried to lounge on the couch but Lilly invaded my lap and Banit crawled under my arm. I was trapped but I can't complain. I noticed that Lilly has started wearing perfume. She has good tastes.

January 15, 1892

I didn't have anything to do today either. Therefore I wandered around. I haven't talked to Henry and Mr. Brooks in a while so I headed over there. That early in the morning the dry goods store isn't very busy. I found Mr. Brooks teaching Henry how to read and write. Henry was happy to see me and showed me that he learned how to write his name. He seemed to love working there. Mr. Brooks said that the Judge that released him has come by a couple of times and commented on how well Henry is coming along. I am beyond pleased that Henry has found himself a home. Mr. Brooks went on to say that he thinks that Henry would be able to take over the store someday, "But not if he keeps standing around and not studying!" Henry snapped to and said, "Yes sir!" and hurried back to his exercises. Mr. Brooks and I laughed. Henry really is a good kid. We talked for a while and had some coffee. Henry waved to me as I left. I heard Mr. Brooks yell at him to get back to work quickly followed by Henry's "Yes sir!" What a pair. Mr. Brooks may be a bit grumpy and a tough nut, but I can tell that he loves that boy dearly.

I ended up over in The Pasture again today. Cora had the day off from her usual work and was helping Ma clean the glasses. She was glad to see me and kissed my cheek. This made Melanie angry and I heard her usual, "womanizer!" Joey came up and hugged me from behind. We all chatted about this and that and really nothing at all. I was glad to have the company. I discovered that Melanie gets very excited when I hug her from behind and pick her up. I don't think she likes that too much. It's a good thing she's so small. When I released her she turned and started hitting me. She doesn't have much force so it was more amusing that anything else. She realized that and tried to bite me instead. She can do some serious damage with those teeth of hers. I dodged and she chased me around the saloon. I kept teasing her about her punches. Ma, Cora and the Girls all laughed and laughed at us. We'd made a couple of laps when Ma reached out and caught me. She put me in a headlock and told me to leave Melanie alone. I started to complain but Ma flexed and my neck cracked. I promised I'd take it easy on her. Ma dropped me to the floor. Melanie looked pleased. Cora and Joey thought it'd be fun to continue teasing by cuddling up to me saying "Poor Flint". Melanie just kicked me and walked off. She just doesn't have any love.

I stuck around for Lilly's show. She said that Bobby is staying at the Bancroft house again. Banit is home studying.

Not much happened tonight. Everyone was fairly well behaved. How boring.

January 16, 1892

Banit said that she was going to go over to Grace's apartment and visit with them. Bobby was going out with Will and the Warren boys. He said that Charlie got in trouble and can't go. Poor Charlie, I hope her parents are alright. Lilly is still changing out of her pajamas so I don't know what she's doing today. Then again I don't know what I'm doing today either.

I was thinking about how Charlie got in trouble and so I thought I'd go check on her parents, Lilly came with me. We'd no sooner stepped up to their porch that Charlotte came out nearly in tears. She hugged Lilly and me and pulled us inside. I couldn't understand what she was saying so I was a bit worried. She led us into their living room and pointed at Charlie. I was stunned. Charlie wasn't running around naked, or covered in dirt, or raising hell. She was standing there wearing a dress, and her hair was brushed and in ribbons. She looked like, well, a girl! Charlotte said that she went to check on Charlie and this is how she found her. Charlie looked at us like there was something wrong with us. Lilly strutted up behind Charlie and said that she's been teaching Charlie how to be a girl. Charlotte nearly fainted. Even I can't believe what I'm seeing. Charlotte said that she knew something had changed when Charlie told her that she wanted to grow her hair out. She also was wondering why sometimes Charlie would come back and her hair would be brushed. Charlie got mad at us making such a fuss over it and tried to storm out. Charlotte caught her and hugged her thanking her for making an effort and said that she was so pretty. We sat around in the living room talking about what she wanted and how to help her when her father came in. He nearly fainted himself when he saw Charlie. He couldn't believe it either. We had to have the same discussion all over again. Neither Frank nor Charlotte could stop staring at Charlie. Then again neither could I. Other than the way she spoke, what sat before us was a beautiful young girl. Not the wild tomboy that we remembered. Frank and I went into the next room to speak. He said that all this is because she started playing with Bobby. He asked if I've noticed her changing as well. I told him everything that I knew about the two of them. He just couldn't believe Charlie was becoming a real girl. Poor Charlie, please believe me that we fully encourage this change and love you nonetheless if not more for it. It was a long while before the Bancroft's let Lilly and I leave. I hope this doesn't scare Charlie back to her tomboy roots.

Lilly and I spent the rest of the day together. We went shopping mostly. She was so happy. I'm going to pretend that she's happy about Charlie and not about spending the day with me. I heard several older women laughing at us in the various stores. That was embarrassing. We soon ran out of time and had to hurry home so that she could get ready for her show.

Bobby came and said that they're all going to stay over at the Young's place tonight. He also said that Ms. Warren has found herself a man and they are going out tonight for dinner. Oh ho! Good for you Ms. Warren. She deserves a good man. After dinner he was fast out the door. Banit never came so I'm assuming that means that she'll be staying at Grace's. Once I drop Lilly off at The Pasture I'll head over there and check on her.

Nessa answered the door. She was nearly naked except for the towel she held. She said that they're all taking a bath. I'm glad. I said I was just checking on Banit and that I'll leave them to their fun. Nessa smiled and walked back toward the bathroom. She wasn't covering her backside. I couldn't help but look. She's very muscular. I almost felt like following her back. I instead left. Damn, I actually want to take a peek! As I was leaving Banit leaned out and called to me. She looked embarrassed. I asked her if there was something I could do for her. She smiled at me turned and stuck her butt out at me before giggling and running back inside. Grace poked her head out laughing and waved to me. Silly girls...

I left there and went back to The Pasture. I was just in time to catch the last half of Lilly's show. As I walked in I saw Melanie cleaning up some blood on the floor. She looked very angry. I almost stepped on her. She snapped at me "Watch where you're going asshole!" She then looked up and saw who she was talking to. She choked up but repeated, "Watch where you're going." She went back to work. She's so feisty. I don't know why I like that about her. I asked Ma what happened. She said that someone tried to grope Melanie but that she bit his hand. She also said that he left a couple of fingers on the floor as he ran out. A funny thought passed my mind that made me laugh. I told Ma that this is probably the most dangerous place in town for the ill-behaved. Ma laughed smugly. The rest of the night was noticeably quiet.

January 17, 1892

After Church today I had a chance to talk with Melanie. I asked her why she was still working after I told her that she didn't owe me anything. She said that she's just trying to get home and doesn't have the money for it. I offered to buy her a ticket but she refused. She said that she'll earn it. I have to respect that. Most people probably would have taken the money and run. I also talked to her about last night. She was very embarrassed about biting that man. It didn't take long for me to drop that conversation. I left her alone after that. Maybe I shouldn't pester her if she bites like that.

Who am I kidding, I love pestering her.

Banit was awfully quiet. Lilly kept asking if she was alright. Finally she came up and apologized for last night. Ma asked what happened and she said that I had come over to check on her but she was taking a bath. Grace dared her to flash her backside at me. I laughed and said that I thought that's what happened. I was laughing but Lilly was mad. She was making her very angry bunny noises. Ma was laughing too and said, "Well, it's not like we all haven't seen it before!" Banit blushed but the rest of us laughed. Lilly pulled my arm around her but kept making her angry noises. She's mad. That means that I'm in for a rough day.

Back home Bobby ran out to play, Ma went shopping and Banit was going to the library to study with Grace and Nessa. That left me alone with Lilly. Lilly busied herself with cleaning but she kept shooting me angry glances and would stomp off. I tried to leave but she snapped, "Just where do you think you're going?" I could only meekly reply, "Nowhere, nowhere." She huffed. I think that means that I'm on house arrest. I don't know why she's mad at me. I didn't lift Banit's skirt or anything and I was just as surprised as Lilly.

Ha ha ha! Oh, Lilly's embarrassed herself again. I guess she wanted to get even and so she called to me. I went in the next room to find her bent over with her skirt lifted. She flashed her backside at me! She couldn't see me behind all of her frills so I snuck up behind her and patted her rump. She nearly shot through the roof! She was so mad and angry. I nearly died laughing. She reached out to pinch me but I ran. She tried to chase after me but her knickers were down around her ankles. She had to stop and pick them up. I waited and when she was ready she chased me around the house and yard. I ran back inside and let her catch me. She was so mad she ran into me. I picked her up and tossed her onto the couch and started tickling her. We "fought" for a while before she tired. I held her in my lap and we both just laughed it out. She made me promise not to tell anyone what she did. She seemed happier after all of that and went out to play with her friends. She just can't stand "losing" to Banit. It's probably a good thing that she doesn't know what all we've done.

After all the excitement settled down I went for a walk. I bumped into Luke and Edna. They'd just returned from their trip. I was very surprised to find them walking with their arms linked together. How daring! Ha! Luke said that he really enjoyed staying with her family and that their closer now than they've ever been. I asked Luke if he'd kissed her yet. He blushed and stammered, "A man should never kiss a woman before they're properly engaged!" He blushed a bit deeper and said that he kissed her cheek. My Lord! Their innocence is blinding! We talked and caught up on everything that's happened while they were gone. While we were talking Edna was distracted by a store display. Luke pulled me aside and asked for my help. He wanted to know where the best place to buy a ring is. "Oh ho! Things are getting serious are they?" He nervously shushed me and said that he's planning on proposing to her but he wants to find a ring and that he'll probably have to save up to buy it. I said that I really don't know where to look, but to go ask Jr. Harcourt. Edna nearly caught us. She came up and asked what we were whispering about. Luke choked and I said, "Luke just wanted to know where a nice restaurant is as he wanted to take you out for a nice dinner." "Oh, Luke you're so sweet." She said as she hugged him, "don't worry about dinner, I'll cook us something nice." Luke you're a lucky man. I waved as they walked off. The look on his face just said, "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Kids...

The rest of the day was fairly quiet.

January 18, 1892

Well, I'm off today for Baton Rouge. It's not a long trip only a couple of hours so I didn't spend a lot on a ticket. I've also packed lightly. I caught the ten o'clock train so that I could walk the kids to school. Lilly hung off of my arm the entire time. Once there she made me promise to come back alright. I chuckled and said, "I promise not to get myself hurt Lilibel." She hugged me as did Bobby. I turned and started walking away. I got maybe ten to fifteen feet when Lilly yelled, "You read my diary didn't you? You jerk!" I ran, laughing as I went.

Once home I packed, donned my travel clothes and gunbelt, and headed out. Ma saw me off at the train. I wasn't expecting her to do that. I warned her that Lilly might be a bit testy today. She huffed at me again. I guess I've been getting on her nerves a bit lately. I'll try to take it easy on her when I get back.

When I took on the bounty, I was given a small file regarding Eloi Bernard. Mr. Bernard stands six foot three inches and has a slight limp from his left leg being a bit shorter than the right. He has six brothers and four sisters. They are very close nit and are most likely hiding him. The family is law abiding but are known to be protective of their family. The rest of the file was basic information about what he's done and who he did it with. Really it seems as though he was dragged into the robbery. I don't think he wanted to go along with it. If that's the case then I might be able to settle this peacefully. One thing that I noticed was that he was always sick in jail and spent most of the time in the infirmary. When he wasn't sick they said that he was very well behaved.

I arrived in Baton Rouge, I like this town. It's a lot like New Orleans but smaller and the people seem friendlier, or at least not as high and mighty as some in New Orleans. I gathered my luggage and headed over to what I gathered is the nicest hotel in the area. My room is decently nice but very clean. It seems that this hotel takes pride in itself. I think I'll be comfortable here. I put my things away and changed into some nicer clothes. My first stop is the local sheriff's office.

The sheriff was very helpful. He said that he's seen Bernard but didn't realize that he was wanted. I told him that I just wanted to talk to him and see if we could straighten things out. He seemed nice and appreciated that I didn't want to cause trouble. He pointed me towards Elbow Bayou and said that his family lives there. He also gave me their address. I thanked him and went on my way.

Elbow Bayou is a fairly nice area, a bit in the sticks for my tastes but nice enough. I found the Bernard household and knocked on the door. A very short older woman answered. I introduced myself and told her what I was there for. At first she was going to slam the door in my face but I stuck my foot in and said that I want to help him. A large man put a shotgun in my gut and asked me how I think I can help. I said that I believe that he escaped to find medical help. I said that if he comes back peacefully that I'll personally see to it that he gets the help he needs and that he won't be punished severely. He invited me in. I was "asked" to sit in the living room. The man said that he was the eldest brother, he introduced himself as Emeric. Emeric said that he was going to protect his baby brother. I held my hands up and said that I fully agree. I went on to say that I thought that he was roped into helping the other bank robbers and took the fall for them. I said that I only wanted to help. We talked about it for a long while. Their sister came to bring us tea. She was very nervous. I smiled at her and thanked her for the tea. I pretended not to notice the rest of them peaking around the corner behind me. The tea was actually very good. I did my best to convince them that I only wanted to help. I got the feeling that they wanted to talk it over so I told them where I was staying and that I'll come back tomorrow to talk it over with them again. I excused myself, shook hands with Emeric and thanked him for listening to me. As I left, he asked me what kind of bounty hunter am I. I replied, "I'm actually a gambler. I only do this for money to play with. However I will say this, He's coming with me, dead or alive, willingly or not. I'm not afraid of gunplay but would like to avoid it if possible." I tipped my hat to him and headed back to the hotel.

The man at the front desk said that the best place to eat around here is two blocks to the south and east one block. He said to follow my nose once I get there and I won't be led astray. That sounds promising. I made my way over there. He wasn't joking. I could smell the place long before I got there. I didn't think of it at the time but it's run by a couple of gators. They welcomed me in and I sat at a nice booth. The young gator woman taking orders was very cute, if not a bit hard to understand. I ordered the jambalaya. She smiled and said that I won't be disappointed. I can say that I wasn't. This has to be the best jambalaya I have ever had. I had to tell the cook that as well. He smiled and said that he was glad I liked it. We talked about it and he said that it's an old family recipe and was how the restaurant got its start. He was telling me how they got into the business when he stopped and greeted someone saying "Frère", I turned to see Emeric. He wasn't exactly pleased to see me. I told him that I didn't know that this was his family's restaurant. He and the cook spoke to each other in French. I wish I could understand them. The cook wasn't too happy after they spoke. Emeric came and sat across from me at the booth. He eyed me. I told him that the man at the hotel said that this was the best place to eat so this is where I came. I don't think he believed me. The waitress brought him a plate and he ate quietly. I could tell that he was trying to figure me out. When he was about half done he looked at me and asked how I was planning on helping his brother. I told him that, first things first, I would have to return him to jail. However I would see to it that a proper doctor would see him and give him medical treatment. I also promised that I'd talk to the judge about not punishing him too severely. I went on to say that the money stolen from the bank was never recovered and that I though that Eloi might know where it was. If he does and he'd show me where then I might even be able to reduce his sentence. It was noted that he did protect a woman from being hurt during the robbery. He said that several bounty hunters have come for him and that they've all either been killed or taken by the swamps. I said that if he doesn't turn himself in that they'll never stop and that they'll only get worse. He seemed to agree with me. He said that he'll take me to Eloi but that it was up to Eloi to decide what he wanted. "Fair enough" I replied. He said that he'll come get me tomorrow. He said to wear something I can get dirty. I thanked him, paid for the food, and left.

I'm calling it an early night tonight. I don't know when Emeric will come for me or what tomorrow may bring.

January 19, 1892

I was up early this morning and ate at the hotel. I had a large breakfast. The worst clothes I have are my traveling clothes so I put those back on and headed down to the lobby to wait. I sent a message to the sheriff telling him what I was planning and what to do if I don't come back. I really hope I can do this without hurting anyone. I've done too much of that lately.

Emeric came for me fairly early, he was still unsure about me. I can't blame him though. It took us nearly an hour's ride by wagon and now we're on a small boat. I don't know where we are to be honest.

It was just past noon when we arrived. Emeric brought me to a cabin out in the middle of the swamps. There was another skiff pulled up on the bank. Once inside I was met with two of the other brothers and another sister. Emeric warned me not to play any tricks. I nodded and was led to a back room where a very sick Eloi was laying on the bed. He was not in good shape. I told him who I was and why I was there. I also told him of the deal I made with Emeric. We discussed everything and he told me what happened. He strikes me as being a very trusting and simple minded person. After talking with him I asked him what he wanted. He said that he didn't want to go back to jail that the food made him sick. The sister behind me said that he's always had a weak stomach and that he'd often fall sick because of it. He also said that he didn't want to cause any trouble and only wanted to make things right. I asked him if he knew where the money was hidden. He said that he hid it so that the other bank robbers wouldn't find it. I told him that once we got him back that if he'd tell us where the money was that the judge might go easy on him. Eloi started to say something but got dizzy and fainted. I stood and went back in the other room with Emeric. I told him that if Eloi doesn't get the proper help that he'll die here. We talked some more but he said that we'll wait until tomorrow so that Eloi can decide what he wants to do. I agreed.

We stayed quiet but I told them of some of my exploits, more to pass the time than anything else. The other two brothers wouldn't talk to me much so I still don't know their names but they all seem to want to do the right thing. The little sister stayed with Eloi. Emeric is very quiet, contemplative. I believe that he is the head of the family. I must say though. While he is very large, there's a presence about him that makes him seem like a mountain. I really don't want to get on his bad side.

I'm sleeping in the main room with Emeric on one side and the two brothers on the other. I've never slept in the swamps like this. The smell is...interesting.

January 20, 1892

It got cold here last night. They ran low on fire wood so I took it upon myself to cut some more. Emeric asked me why I would do that. I said that it would be no use if Eloi became more ill. He quietly turned and went back inside. Once I had chopped a good pile I carried some inside and restarted the fire. The brothers brought Eloi in and sat him next to the fire in a chair. He dosed in and out but eventually he said that he wanted to see a doctor and didn't want to trouble his family any more. Emeric quietly nodded and said that we'll leave once it warms up a bit more. I thought that the best thing I could do was stay out of the way. Emeric stood and walked outside. He gave me a look that said to follow him. He asked me again if I would do everything that I said I would. I said that I can make no guarantees, but that I promised that I'd do my best for him to get him the help he needs. He thought on this long and hard before finally saying that I had better do right by Eloi. I could only nod.

Just past noon, Emeric gathered Eloi, bundled him in blankets and sat him gently in his skiff with the sister. I rode with the brothers. They still wouldn't talk to me. For some reason the ride back was much faster than the ride to. We'd arrived behind the Bernard house in a little over an hour. Emeric helped Eloi inside while I helped the brothers with the skiffs. I followed them inside. The old woman I gather to be their mother. An old man was seated next to her. I'm assuming that's the father. The trip over took a lot out of Eloi and he had to rest in a bedroom. I said that I'd come back for him tomorrow after I make some arrangements. Emeric nodded. I left and headed back to the hotel. I got myself cleaned up and I bought two tickets on the train leaving tomorrow. I also sent a telegram asking for a doctor to be waiting for us when we arrive. While I waited for a response I ate. I was starving. While I ate a runner came and delivered the response. It said that they will have a doctor and wagon waiting for me upon my arrival. That's good. I finished eating and thought I'd walk around town a bit.

I had no sooner started my walk when that waitress sister came running up asking for my help. She said that some bounty hunters saw us with Eloi and have started a fight. I told her to get the sheriff and that I'll hurry over.

Sure enough a couple of mangy looking coyotes have started up a gunfight. They were shooting up the Bernard's house and making a big mess of things. I shouted at them to stop that I've collected the bounty on Eloi. They laughed and said that they'll be claiming it. One started to point his gun on me so I shot him. Seeing this, the other ran. I hurried inside to check on them. They were shaken but unhurt. Emeric thanked me for saving them. I shrugged and said that I told him that things would only get worse. I helped him and his brothers board up the windows that were shot out. We'd just about finished when the sheriff showed up. I told him what happened. He shook his head and said that it's a shame such bad things happen to such good people. He took the coyote and tossed him up into his wagon. He said that he did have an open jail cell if I wanted to put Eloi in there. I thanked him but refused. I said that it would be best for him to be with his family for the time being. He nodded and left apologizing again for all the trouble. I invited Eloi to come stay in my hotel room where I could protect him and where others wouldn't be looking for him. Emeric thanked me but refused. I told him when the train is leaving and that I'd come for Eloi then. He nodded and saw me off. I have a feeling that this isn't over.

I went by the sheriff's office and asked him if he'd be willing to escort Eloi onto the train. He agreed and thanked me for being so nice about all of this. We talked about them and I'm glad that I was able to have them help me. They sound like they are very nice people. They're just caught up in some bad circumstances.

I'm back in my room now. I've just got a bad feeling about tomorrow. I've cleaned my pistols and brought out my rifle. I hope I won't need it but I just may.

January 21, 1892

The train leaves today at eight sharp. I gathered my things and sent them ahead so that I won't have to worry about them. Since my traveling clothes are still dirty I'm wearing my nice clothes. I really hope I don't ruin these. I really like them. I donned my gunbelt and loaded my rifle. I'll keep an extra box of ammunition in my pocket just in case. When I talked to Emeric yesterday he said that they wanted to take him to the train so they'll be bringing their wagon. That's one less thing I have to deal with. I rode with the sheriff over to the Bernard house. Right now they're getting Eloi ready to move. We have plenty of time so I'm not going to rush them. Emeric said that he's going with us to make sure Eloi gets there in one piece. I'm not against having another gun but I don't think he really knows how to use one. He started to grab a rifle but I told him that I'll have my rifle but what we could use would be a good shotgun. He grabbed a shotgun that looks more like a cannon. If I'm not mistaken it's a ten gauge. That'll certainly do the job. The sheriff deputized us so that everything would be legal. That's good. The sisters of the house just came down. They say that Eloi is ready.

The ride over was noticeably quiet. We arrived at the station alright but that's when the trouble started. We had just gotten Eloi seated waiting on the train when a group of riders came up. Eloi recognized some as the rest of the bank robbers. The sheriff and I opened fire as soon as they got within range. We hit six of them but the rest fled. They said that they'll get Eloi if it's the last thing they do. I knew there was something off about those "bounty hunters" yesterday. One of the men we hit survived. We pulled him into the station to question him. He wasn't cooperating. I pulled him into a backroom and...made him more willing to cooperate. He said that they wanted Eloi to show them where he hid the money. He said that if he doesn't tell them then they'll make him suffer. He started making more threats. I hit him with the butt of my rifle. He fell silent. I don't really care if he dies. The sheriff tied him up and left him there. I told Emeric that in all likelihood that when they find that they can't get to Eloi that they'll come after his family. He said that they'll have to find them first. He was prepared for this and said that they'll move back into the swamps. There's no way that they'll be found and that they'll be ready for them. I wished them luck.

We didn't have to wait long for the train to arrive. We quickly boarded and got ourselves ready. Emeric and I will be sitting on either side of Eloi. The sheriff said that he'll hire on a couple of more trustworthy deputies to keep an eye on the Bernard family. He's a good man. The family said their goodbyes while I talked with the conductor. I asked him if there was anyway we could speed up the train. He said that he'll do his best. We left without further incident. I doubt that'll last.

Emeric spent most of the trip tending to Eloi. I kept my eyes out for trouble. It wasn't long when some more riders tried to board the moving train. Using my rifle I stopped several but I know that a couple managed to get on board. I asked the passengers in the car to move to a different one. They hurried out. I stacked some luggage on either side of Eloi to protect him. I was able to make a couple of barriers with it as well. A few minutes after they boarded I heard foot steps on the roof. I took Emeric's shotgun and shot through the roof where I heard some steps. I know I hit one as he fell off the side, but that gun nearly broke my shoulder. I gave it back to Emeric. That's more than what I can handle. Half an hour later and they tried again. I didn't hear them cross over the roof so they came from the front of the car. Three of them, I took two out quickly with my rifle but the third hid where I couldn't hit him. I yelled at Emeric to shoot. He held that gun like it was wild snake. Figures, I didn't think he'd be able to shoot. Big guys like him rely on their size and intimidation to get out of trouble. I ran up and slapped him. I said that if he doesn't start shooting and shooting to kill that he and Eloi would be killed. It took a minute for him to make up his mind. Finally he shot. He only knicked the third man but it was enough to make him jump. I was able to shoot him then. We didn't have anymore trouble while on train. I think that was only because the swamp protected the train. I don't know how but we managed not to get hurt. Emeric thanked me. Then he said, "I'm glad we're on the same side. We'd be in trouble otherwise." I couldn't help but laugh.

As we entered the outskirts of New Orleans Emeric and I put away the luggage as best we could. We at least cleared the aisles so that we could walk out. At the station I was greeted by Luke and nearly a dozen police officers as well as Doc. Doc was first aboard and quickly checked on Eloi. He said that Eloi needed to be brought to his office quickly. He and half a dozen officers collected him and loaded him gently onto the wagon and were soon gone. Emeric tried to go with him but couldn't catch up. I told him not to worry and that I'll take him over there soon. I asked Luke why so many officers were here. He smiled and said that the sheriff of Baton Rouge sent a telegram warning them of the danger. I threw my arm around him and thanked him. He said that the Chief wanted to talk to us so we got on a wagon and headed to the station. Chief thanked me for a job well done and gave me my bounty. I was a bit embarrassed to collect it in front of Emeric but a job's a job. I told the Chief what happened and what I promised. He wrote down everything and said that he'll talk with the judge about it. He had us explain everything that happened. Once done he shook Emeric's hand and said not to worry that he'll be sure that Eloi is given proper care. He also asked Emeric to stick around New Orleans if possible. Emeric agreed and asked about finding an inexpensive hotel. The Chief called Luke in and asked him to make arrangements for Emeric at a near by boarding house. He ran off. Once done there I took Emeric over to the doctor's office.

There were two officers inside and they said that they'll keep 24 hour watch over Eloi both to protect him and to make sure he doesn't run off again. It was a long time before we were able to speak with Doc. He said that Eloi will be just fine but needs a special diet or else he'll get sick again. He gave Emeric a list of things that Eloi should avoid. Looking at it, that list is nearly the prison's menu. No wonder he was sick so badly. Emeric thanked him and promised to pay his bill. Doc shook his head and said that the city is covering it as Eloi has promised to tell them where he hid the money. We were all talking when the doctor looked at me and said that I'm responsible for my own bill though. I was a bit confused. He pointed to the door behind me. Ma was standing there none too pleased. She demanded to know why I hadn't come by and said hello yet. I tried to apologize but she rushed me and hugged me before I could say anything. She picked me up and squeezed me hard enough to crack my back and knock the wind out of me. She dropped me, turned and started leaving. She said that we're having a party at The Pasture to celebrate my return. She eyed Emeric and told him to move out of her way. He slowly stepped aside. He didn't move fast enough for Ma and she pushed him out of the way. I was still slumped on the floor gasping for air. Ma poked her head in and said, "You'd better go walk Lilly and Bobby home today, iffn you know what's good fer ya." I could only weakly reply, "Yes mama." Emeric smiled and asked, "Mama?" It took a minute for me to regain my composure but I answered him, "Yeah, that's the woman that raised me. She's much stronger than she looks and doesn't know how to control it." He laughed. That's the first time I've seen him smile or laugh. He's normally so stoic and stone faced. I left him there at Doc's office and headed back to the train station to gather my luggage. I found it stacked neatly off to the side. I picked it up and headed home.

I had an hour's rest before I headed over to the school. Lilly was so happy to see me. She ran up and hugged me. She then pinched me as hard as she could! That really hurt! She said that's for reading her diary. She went right back to hugging me though. Bobby was just as excited to see me. He hugged me as well but left out the pinch. I walked them home and was able to play with them a bit before Banit arrived. She didn't like me hiding behind the door and scaring her. She screamed so loud and kicked and thrashed about. It was so worth it. I had another round of hugs though when she calmed down and stopped hitting me. I had to sit and tell them all about my trip and what all happened. Lilly was so glad that I went out of my way to help Eloi instead of just catching him. Bobby liked the part about the gunfight on the train. Banit wanted to know what jambalaya was. I promised her that when they have a break that I'll take them up to the Bernard's restaurant and let them try some real jambalaya. She liked that. It took a while but I finally got everyone calmed down enough to finish up their homework. After that Lilly and Banit worked together in the kitchen and made a nice dinner for me. It was good. I told them that I promised Ma that I'd swing by The Pasture for a party she was planning. That's when I remembered that today's Thursday. Why is Ma at The Pasture?

Banit and the kids joined me as I left for The Pasture. There was a sign outside saying that it was closed until tomorrow. That must be why Ma's here. I walked in and was greeted with a large cheer. Ma and the Girls all had cleaned up the place and were very happy to see me. Melanie came up and asked me how many women I ruined while I was gone. I smiled and said, "I'll have you know that I was very well behaved on my trip!" She sneered and said, "Doubt that." I shrugged, can't make everyone happy. I had to tell everyone my story and what happened. "That's our Flint!" One girl yelled, "Always a top hand!" Everyone laughed. We were having a great time when Emeric showed. One of the girls stopped him and said that we were closed for the evening. I saw him and invited him in. I figured after everything that I could at least buy him a beer. I introduced him to everyone. Joey and Lilly hopped up on stage and started singing and dancing. We all were dancing around and having a good time, Emeric just sat at the end of the bar and enjoyed watching us. We finished off the main keg. Ma set if off to the side and looked over at Emeric, "You there. You look strong. Think ya can help me with the new keg?" He got up and walked over to help. The two of them lifted it up and set it on the stand. It wasn't lined up how Ma likes it so she picked it up and turned it. Emeric was dumbfounded. Ma smiled at him and slapped him on the back thanking him for his help. She then took the keg tap and cleaned it. Emeric asked where the hammer was. "Hammer? What hammer? I don't use a hammer for this." Ma said as she lined the tap up and pounded it in with one sharp hit with her fist. Emeric was even quieter than usual. Ma announced "Free beers!" Banit and the kids had milk instead. Emeric seemed mesmerized by Ma. I asked him if he was alright. He said that he's never seen a woman that can do what she does. I laughed and said that Ma's one of a kind. He was quiet for a minute before saying, "I like her." I laughed hard at that and told him good luck. Really they're not too far apart in age. I'd say only ten years or so. However, Ma's not interested. We had a grand party before calling it an early night. The kids do have school tomorrow after all.

Post Script: I don't remember undressing and getting in bed. All I remember is climbing the stairs behind Banit and Lilly, Bobby was hitching a ride on my back. I was exhausted.

January 22, 1892

I had to walk Lilly and Bobby to class this morning, not that I mind. Bobby asked me why I was still wearing my gunbelt. I told him that there could still be trouble and to be careful around strangers. He nodded. He's a good kid. I want to take it easy today and pester a certain angry person.

I went by to check on Eloi and Emeric. Eloi looks like he's doing a lot better. He said that he feels better today than he has in the months that he was in prison. I'm glad. Emeric was his usual "talkative" self. I'd like to tell you what he said but I don't know how to write silence. Doc said that Eloi should be up and about this time next week. He saw me out. He said that some people have been hanging around but since there have been a couple of policemen here they haven't done anything. I imagine that these are the rest of the bank robbers. I told him to be careful. He said he is and showed me his pocket pistol. I laughed and asked, "Isn't that against your 'do no harm' oath?" He snorted and said, "I can pull the bullet out of him if I put it in him." Yeah, I suppose he could. I thanked him for the warning and left.

I wandered around for a while. Really I'm just looking around for strangers. They'll be hanging around close to Eloi. I haven't found any sign of them. Then again I don't know who to look for in this big city. I had lunch and then went to speak with Dutchy. I always wonder how he knows the things he knows.

Dutchy was so very happy to see me. Kept telling me just how lonely he was without me. Strange, I didn't feel lonely at all without him, Heh. After calming him down I asked him about Eloi and the bank robbery. He was very informative. The gang calls itself the Fisher gang, the leader being Johnny Fisher. They are wanted mainly for small time robberies and muggings but have branched out to stage coach robberies and a couple of bank robberies. According to Dutchy, they are more than willing to sling a lot of lead but rarely have hit anyone or anything. They all carry several guns and lots of bullets. He also said that there should be about twelve to fifteen of them. Counting the "bounty hunters" I should have shot and possibly killed five or six of them. I wonder just how many are here. I thanked Dutchy and tried to leave. He stopped me asking if I had forgotten anything. He leaned forward as if for a kiss. I patted him on the head and said "good work, Dutchy" before walking out. If it wasn't for his "tendencies" he'd be a great asset. As it stands though, I have to avoid him.

I ended up wandering around and found myself in The Pasture. Melanie didn't see me come in so I snuck up behind her yelled and hugged her from behind. It was like holding onto a hurricane! She screamed and flailed around. She fought so hard that I was afraid to let her loose. When I finally let go I jumped as far back as I could. She was furious! She turned slowly and growled, "I'm gonna kill you." I smiled and said "Good Afternoon." "Die asshole!" she replied before chasing me around the saloon swinging her broom at me. She even chased me outside yelling how she was going to castrate me before killing me. Eventually though she tired out and went back inside. Joey and Cora had come out and were laughing themselves silly. They warned me against going inside for a while. I can't have that. So I took them under each of my arms and strutted in to grab a table. I asked where Ma was but they said that she went out shopping for a bit and that she should be back soon. I figured I'd stick around until then. I told them about Eloi and how the gang was hanging around and asked them to keep an eye out for anyone suspicious. We talked about them and what to do if they see them. I think they understand the severity of this mess. I don't think we'll have peace so long as that gang is hanging around. Something needs to be done about them. Melanie thought that I was distracted and tried to sneak up on me. She had her broom raised to hit me. When she was close enough I quickly turned and tickled her. She's surprisingly cute when being tickled and has the most adorable laugh. So cute in fact that both Joey and Cora felt the need to join in. Melanie laughed so hard she cried. We were just starting to have fun when she suddenly jumped up and ran to the back room. She came out a little while later looking relieved. She had calmed down as well and went back to sweeping. She just happened to need to sweep next to me and kept her back turned to me. I teased her a bit by asking, "Melanie, I know you're just trying to do your job, but the way you're doing it... You like being tickled, don't you?" She blushed and tried to hide it by stammering, "N-n-n-no! D-don't be ridicules. Why would someone enjoy that?" This could be fun. I reached out like I was going to tickle her again but stopped short. She practically squirmed from wanting to be tickled again. I leaned back and laughed. She blushed deeper and called me an asshole. She started walking away but I grabbed her waist and pulled her into my lap where I continued to tickle her. She "fought" but it was obvious she was enjoying herself, and she calls me a pervert. Lord...

We were playing around and having a couple of drinks when Ma came in. She was stunned to see Melanie in my lap. Melanie was very embarrassed by that. We got a good laugh out of her. I sat Ma down and told her what I told Joey and Cora. She said, "Guess y'all should start prayin' for them, prayin' they don't come 'round here." She snorted smugly. I suppose she's right though. This would be the worst place for that type of person. However, given that this is the closest saloon to where Eloi is. I imagine that this'll be the first place they go to. Ma changed the subject though. She asked me how I managed to get Melanie in my lap willingly. I smiled and said, "Watch this." I called Melanie over. She begrudgingly obliged. I told her that I saw something on her back and asked her to turn around. She did and I pulled her into my lap and tickled her once again. Ma's eyes were as big as saucers. I stopped and let Melanie go. She sat still in my lap almost looking sad that I stopped. Ma stared at her and said, "She's so adorable!" Just like that, Melanie was doomed. Ma spent most of the afternoon sneaking up and tickling her. It was hilarious. We called it good when people started coming in. I figured that I needed to go home and have dinner with Banit and the kids.

Dinner was nice. Bobby said that he's going to go stay with the Warren boys tonight. Banit however wanted to come with me and Lilly. We made our way over and Lilly hurried upstairs with Joey to get ready. Mrs. Harcourt Jr. came over to remind Ma that she'll be leaving for her Honeymoon after next week. I thought that they were waiting until spring. She said that they changed it as it'll be very hot down in the islands if they wait too long. I guess that means that when they come back, Jr. will take over the store and Sr. will retire. We chatted for a bit before she had to go warm up the piano. Banit and I took a table off to the side and talked about how she's doing in college. She says that it's a lot of work and is difficult but that she loves it. She told me all about her professors and a couple of friends that she made in her classes. I doubt I could be prouder of her than I am right now. As we talked Lilly came down and started her show. There's a song that she likes to start with. It's a fun little number. Usually gets people's attention as well. I was enjoying the music when some rather shady looking characters came in. They took a seat near the northeast window. You can see the Doctor's office from there. I figured that these were part of the Fisher gang. There was a tall one, a short one, and one missing part of his ear. They were much more interested in looking out that window than the show. I signaled Ma over and told her to keep away from them. They weren't misbehaving, they just didn't act...right. I asked Banit to slip out the back and tell the police about them. She tried to be sneaky. Bless her. However she made it halfway across the floor before tripping and making a big mess. Ma however was quick to help her and hurried her to the back room. That distraction made those men look around. That's when Melanie caught the eye of one of them. She was busy cleaning up the mess that Banit had made. The tall one came up and started in on Melanie. He acted just like a typical cowhand, bullish and without any class. She wouldn't have anything to do with him and tried to walk off. He grabbed her arm, but she slapped him. His buddies laughed. He however didn't like that so he raised his arm to hit her back. I started over to stop him but Melanie jumped up and bit his nose off. I mean BIT IT OFF! She spit it out onto the floor and smugly said that nobody's gonna hit her without losing a piece of his self. I hurried over as fast as I could but his buddies were closer. They drew their guns and said that she was going to pay for that. I couldn't get a clear shot with everyone running out so I jumped up on a table drew my pistol and fired first. I hit the short one in the shoulder making him drop his gun the other I got in the gut. He turned to shoot at me. I took better aim and as we fired the table under me broke and I fell to the floor. I however did get my shot of just before. It struck him center of his chest. His bullet missed and lodged itself in the banister behind me. I jumped up and took off after the tall one.

He was running back to the rest of the gang. I followed him carefully. I lost sight of him in an alley but found a blood trail coming out the other side. I tracked it to a cheap hotel a few blocks away. He climbed up the back stair case and into a third floor room. No sooner was he inside that two more came out to have a look around. I hid and watched the hotel for the rest of the night.

January 23, 1892

While watching the hotel last night I found out what room they were in. I didn't want to move and possibly lose sight of them. I lucked out though and a young boy about Lilly's age wandered nearby me. I called him over and asked him to bring the police over here. I told him I'd pay him if he'd hurry. He said, "Yes sir!" and ran off. A few minutes later a couple of officers were there. I told them about last night and why I was still there. I asked them for help catching the rest of the gang that's hiding out in the hotel. They agreed but asked me to wait while they sent for backup. While we waited I asked him what he knew of the situation. I was pleased to find out that a representative of the bank that was robbed came to talk with Eloi. Eloi marked on a map where he hit the money and what to look for. Because of this they said that if the money really is there that they'll drop the charges against him. He started to tell me more but several officers showed. It seems as though the Chief was prepared for this and had a warrant ready for them. We got ready to storm the building. The officers said that they were going to split up and attack from all of the entrances including the back staircase. I asked them about the roof. I said that it is possible to run from roof to roof here. They said that they would just try to catch as many as they could before they got away. That won't do. So, I asked them to wait five minutes for me to make my way up there before beginning. They agreed.

I entered a nearby office building and made my way up to the roof. I jumped across and checked my guns. There's only one door leading up here so that'll make it easier. I climbed up on top of the bulkhead and waited. It wasn't long before I heard footsteps coming up the stairs. Eight people exited, including the tall nose-less one. I drew both of my pistols and ordered them to drop their guns. One went for his guns so I shot him. That started the gun fight. I dropped down flat on the bulkhead to avoid getting shot. It worked and I was able to keep firing. I wanted to catch as many as I could alive so I aimed mostly for their legs. I managed to get five when the police stormed up the stairs. With their arrival the other three gave up. Only one person was killed and that was the tall one. He was shot in the back by one of his own. I climbed down and it was then that I realized that I had been hit. I took a bullet to my side just above my left hip. There were two holes so that means that the bullet exited. That's good. That only means that Doc will have to stitch me up and not dig around. Speaking of the good doctor, he heard the shooting and came running over. I was just walking out the front door as he arrived. He checked my wound and said that I'll be fine and to wait for him in his office. He went to work on some of the others that still had bullets in them.

I walked over to Doc's office and his nurse brought me back to the operating room to bandage me. I apologized to her and said that things are about to become very busy around here. She laughed and said that she figured it would be what with all the gunfire. She let me lay down while we waited on Doc. Eloi came in to check on me. He looks much better. He thanked me for catching that gang and for helping him so much. He asked the nurse if there was anything he could do to help. She fussed at him for getting up out of bed and told him that if he wanted to help that he could fold the bandages she just washed. Laughing hurts. Nearly an hour passed before Doc made it back to his office. He washed up and took a better look at me. He said that it was a clean wound and that it'd heal up just fine but that I need to take it easy for the next week or so. I leaned back, smiled and said, "That's not a problem. That's not a problem at all." He's getting ready to work on me right now. He brought out the tank of laughing gas. If he's using that on me then it must be worse than what he told me.

January 24, 1892

Well I'm patched up and back home again. Doc said that when I laid down on that rooftop that my wound picked up a lot of trash that needed to be cleaned out. That's why he had to use that laughing gas on me. I don't remember much about it though. I do have to say one thing. I don't mind the treatment I'm getting right now. Banit and Lilly are tending to me and served me breakfast in bed today before running off to Church. They started arguing over who was going to feed me but they drew straws and Lilly won. Banit gets too next time. There's nothing wrong with my arms. Oh well. The look on Lilly's face as she feeds me is worth it. She's so adorable.

Melanie came by after Church to thank me for saving her last night. She still called me a jerk though. We talked for a while before she left.

I got in trouble. Lilly caught me walking to the bathroom. She, Ma, and Banit all fussed at me for getting up out of bed. Banit said that she'll help me. I smiled and asked, "You realize I'm going to the bathroom, right? Are you going to help me in there too?" She blushed and said that she would. I'm sure she would but that's not something I want help with. I pleaded with them to just let me do my business and that I'll go straight to bed afterwards. They waited just outside the door for me to finish. I called out, "You know, y'all listening like that makes it hard for me to go. I'm alright and if I need help I'll yell." I could hear them fidgeting outside before leaving me alone. I finished and went back to bed. I swear their fussing is worse than getting shot!

I snuck downstairs and laid on the couch. For some reason when I'm hurt or sick that couch is so much more comfortable than my bed. That is until I'm caught and the fussing begins again. I did manage to get Lilly's lap for a pillow and Banit rubbed my feet. I felt like a king!

I couldn't help but notice a distinct lack of Bobby. Lilly said that since I'm hurt that Bobby has taken it upon himself to do all the chores that I'd normally take care of. I don't recall doing a lot of chores but if Bobby's helping out then I'm not going to stop him.

That's pretty much how the rest of the day went for me.

January 25, 1892

I was served breakfast in bed again today. I also learned that Melanie has volunteered to be my nurse during the day until I get better. She's very tender and gentle. Still calls me a jerk and an asshole though.

I got bored and asked her to bring me a book to read. It was taking her a while so I checked on her. She said that she can't read and couldn't figure out which book I had asked for. I felt so bad, she was nearly in tears. I apologized to her and said that she speaks so well that I thought that she could read. She shook her head and said that she can read maps and charts but not books. I asked her if she'd like me to teach her. She looked so happy. I had her bring some paper and a couple of pencils. We sat down and I wrote down the alphabet and worked her though it. She got a good laugh right off the start. I wrote a capital "A" and a lower case "a" and said, "This is an 'A' as in Apple or you're favorite word, asshole." I had her write them down below mine. Her letters looked like chicken scratch but they were legible. I also showed her how to write her name. She loved that. I showed her how to write several words and taught her some practices that would help her with her writing. I got tired though and asked her for a break. She asked if she could keep practicing her letters. I nodded.

When I woke she was sitting at the desk writing. She's already improved and her letters are passable now. From there I taught her the basics of reading including how to sound out words. She gets angry at herself when she makes a mistake but then she practices that until she gets it right. I told her that Banit has some books somewhere that are very easy to read and that they are what she used when she was first learning how to read. I said that Banit would probably be glad to let her borrow them and to ask her when she gets home. That turned the conversation to Banit. Melanie asked me what Banit is to me. I asked her what she meant and she said, "Is she your squaw, girlfriend, or what?" I laughed I told her how I met Banit and most of what we've done together I went on to say that, like Lilly, I think of Banit more as my own daughter than anything else. She said that I make things a bit unclear as I have a habit of pulling her into my lap and cuddling with her. I smiled and said that I do that with a lot of girls. She glared at me and said, "Womanizer." I laughed.

Banit and the kids came home quickly. They must have run. Lilly tried to push Melanie out saying that she's taking over now. I asked her if she finished her homework. She hesitated. I said that Melanie stays until all homework is done and to make a place for her at dinner as that's the least we can do for her. Lilly puffed her cheeks out at me and slowly trod off. Melanie followed. I had a few quiet moments before Melanie came back to ask me something. She said that Lilly was writing something with letters and numbers and wanted to know what it was. I told her that Lilly was probably doing her arithmetic, adding, subtracting, and the like. Melanie looked amazed. She said that Lilly is so smart. I laughed and said that Bobby's actually a bit smarter but hasn't gotten as far in his schooling and that Banit could be the smartest one in the house but is ditzy, and clumsy and so doesn't realize it yet. She was very surprised. That's when she remembered the books that I told her about. She bounced off downstairs. I heard a delighted squeal that I can only imagine came from Melanie. She came back to show me the books. I picked out the easiest one and had her sit next to me as I read it to her. She was so focused on it that she didn't notice Lilly coming in and glaring at her. It wasn't until Lilly groaned that she saw her. Melanie nearly jumped out of her skin. She was mad. I told her that I was only teaching her how to read and not to get so angry. She huffed and walked out. As she left she said that dinner was ready. Melanie asked what she did to make Lilly so angry. I told her that Lilly just get jealous easily when it comes to me and not to worry about it. She blinked hard several times before shaking her head and helping me downstairs.

Dinner was good. Banit cooked. Afterwards Banit wanted to help Melanie with her reading. They spent the evening together until Melanie had to leave. Banit told her to keep the books. She smiled and hugged Banit thanking her for them. She waved to me before leaving.

Bobby said that her teeth are scary when she smiles. Laughing hurts.

January 26, 1892

Ma took today off and after walking the kids to school she came to change my bandages. She also helped bathe me as I can't get my wounds wet. We talked and I asked her if there's been anymore trouble since this weekend. She said that things have been extremely calm up there. She nearly carried me downstairs when I said that I wanted to get out of bed. I had just sat on the couch when there was a knock on the door. It was Luke and Emeric. Ma invited them in and made some coffee. Emeric thanked me for catching the gang and was worried about me when he heard I got shot. I told him that I was alright and that I'll be up and about in no time at all. He got back to his usual quiet self and made Luke uncomfortable. I asked Luke why he'd come. He said that Emeric asked him to bring him here and that he had a message for me. The message was from the Chief. It said that nearly the entire Fisher gang has been either captured or killed. Grant Fisher, the leader of the gang, was also captured but was severely wounded. His right leg has been amputated after it was shot three times. He was hit twice by me but the worst one was from where he shot himself as he tried to draw his pistol. It also said that they recovered nearly thirty guns off of the eight of them, meaning that they all had at least four guns a piece. Damn. I guess I'm lucky I wasn't hurt worse. The Chief also asked me to come to the station as soon as I'm able. I'm probably able right now but I want to milk this for a while. I told Luke what was written and he said that a couple of bystanders were hit by stray bullets several blocks away, one seriously injured. He didn't know how I managed not to get myself killed. I wonder that too. We talked for most of the morning. Emeric said that the bank investigators found the money and have dropped all charges against Eloi and have written him a letter of thanks for protecting the money the way that he did. He's still being held and has been moved back to the jail but that because of his health that he's being treated a lot better and the jail has been ordered to give him food that he can eat. He has a trial set for the first of February. Emeric said that he's go glad to hear that Eloi will be treated better. Luke asked why he wasn't set free if the charges were dropped. I laughed and said, "The initial charges may have been dropped, but he did still break out of jail and run from the authorities." Luke replied, "Oh." Both Emeric and I laughed at that. Well, breaking out of jail should only get him a year or two so that won't be so bad, and the judge is an understanding sort so he may get less. I asked Emeric how Eloi got tangled up with the Fisher Gang. He said that Eloi is simple minded and very trusting so he's easy to trick. They probably took advantage of that and framed him for the robbery. I can see that happening. He does seem a bit on the slow side. We talked too long for Ma's taste. Luke saw her getting a bit testy and suggested that they leave. Emeric stopped at the door and said to stop and visit anytime I'm up in Baton Rouge and to bring my family by their restaurant. What ever we want will be on the house. I smiled and told him I'd take him up on that.

It was nice outside. Cool but nice. I sat in a rocking chair out on the front porch. Ma brought me a beer and some snacks. I could get used to this.

The rest of the day was fairly normal. Bobby and I played some games out on the porch. Charlie and Will joined us. Charlie was wearing a skirt. Lilly fussed about something or other I did. I don't know I wasn't paying attention.

January 27, 1892

Today was quiet. I was feeling good and had Melanie with me so I figured I'd go see what the Chief wanted. We took the trolley and arrived at the station in no time at all. We had to wait a little while but were soon called into the Chief's office. He thanked me for catching the Fisher gang and wanted to give me the bounty on them. $17,000 all totaled out. I can't believe it! That nearly doubles my bank account! Melanie nearly fainted. He gave me a check. I stared at it. That's the biggest check I've ever seen! He said that that includes the reward for the ones I got in Baton Rouge as well. He also said that he's going to need me to testify at Eloi's trial. I said that I would. He nodded then went on to ask me how I was doing. We talked for a bit and he again offered me a job with the department. I politely refused. There was a knock at the door and duty called so I excused us and left. I couldn't believe that I had $17,000 in my pocket. We hurried over to my bank and deposited it. My statement read, "Current Balance: $36,254" thirty six thousand two hundred and fifty-four dollars! Good Lord! I'm set for life! I suddenly felt weak and so I had Melanie help me get home.

I splayed out on the couch and just couldn't believe it. How the hell did I get this lucky? Melanie was stunned as well. She sat in a chair just as quiet. We didn't say anything for a while until she looked over and said, "If you were to ask me to marry you right now, I probably would." It took a minute for me to realize what she said. It didn't take Lilly long at all, she fainted. I don't know when she got here, but she heard the most important part of that. I carried her upstairs and started putting her to bed but Melanie stopped me as I was undressing her and ordered me out. She came out shortly after complaining at all the frills that Lilly wears. Bobby was late coming back and was very worried when we told him what happened. He ran upstairs and refused to leave Lilly's side. Lilly woke a short time later. Bobby came and fetched me. I gently knocked on the door and asked if we could talk. She didn't want to but I came in anyways. I explained what happened and why Melanie said that. I believe she realizes that Melanie wasn't being serious, I think now she's more embarrassed than anything else. I patted her head and apologized. I could tell she just wanted to be alone so I hugged her and told her that anyone I marry will have to have her permission first. I left her to her thoughts after that. We stayed quiet downstairs. Bobby finished his homework and happy that his sister is alright, left when Charlie came to play. Melanie and I worked on her reading some more. I think she's getting the hang of the basics. She's just about learned her letters but still makes some simple mistakes. She'll figure that out quickly enough. Her ability to copy letters has gotten much better. Her writing almost looks like she's educated, even though she has no idea what she's writing. I think her handwriting may rival Banit's once she learns how to read well.

Banit came home late. She said that she was out with Grace and Nessa for a while. She had finished her homework with them and so got started on dinner. Lilly finally came down and apologized to Melanie for her misunderstanding. They ended up chatting until dinner. Banit only tripped once while making it. After dinner Melanie left. Lilly and I finished her homework. Bobby wanted to show me a new picture he had just finished. It was of Charlie playing next to Mr. Harcourt's store. It almost looked like a photograph. I told him that it was amazing. He said that he's going to start coloring it soon and that he wants to enter it in an art show at the end of next month. I'm sure he'll win! This really is amazing.

Post Script: While Lilly was taking a bath I told Banit what happened earlier. She laughed. Now that I think about it, it was a bit funny.

January 28, 1892

It's been about five day's since I was shot. Doc came by to see how I was doing. He said that I need to take it easy but that I'll be fine to move around from here on out. I'm also to come in to get my stitches removed here in about a week or so. That'll be good. The dang things itch.

Ma wouldn't let me walk around today but said that if I want I can sit out on the porch. That sounded better than sitting around inside so I took advantage of that. If I wasn't napping I was reading or watching the day go by. Near noon of all people Edgar Mearns came by. He said that he heard about me getting shot and wanted to come check on me. He's really a nice guy once you get to know him. We talked and had a couple of beers that Ma brought us. I found out that he's from west Texas near El Paso and was a sheriff's deputy there up until he got married. His wife Elle wanted to raise their child in a safer place and so they moved here. He's now working for the railroad in their front office and Elle works as a maid for the time being. He said that she's due in a couple of months and that she'll quit her job to raise their kid. I'm guessing it's their first one. I enjoyed our visit. He left when we heard his wife calling for him.

I had nearly fallen asleep again when a familiar booming voice called out to me. Mr. Harcourt! I always enjoy his visits. I again had to tell him all about what happened and how I got shot...again, third time. He laughed and made all kinds of jokes at my expense. I told him about the reward I got and how I was trying to figure out what to do with it. He said that I need to invest it. He told me about how I can buy stock in different companies and that when the company does well then I'll make more money from it. I asked what happens when the business fails. He said that I'll lose money then. That sounds, to me, to be a lot like gambling. I have bad luck with gambling, I think I'll find a safer way to use this money. I could buy land and just let the value rise. Oh well, I'll figure that out later. For now I'll just leave it alone. That'll be the safest thing to do with it anyways.

I didn't do much for the rest of the day. I helped Banit and the kids with their homework. I played games with Bobby, teased Lilly, and avoided Banit's "graceful" nature.

January 29, 1892

It's raining today, and a bit windy. Unfortunately the wind is blowing the rain onto the porch so I can't sit out there today. I do have some comfort. Ma gave Cora the day off. Cora has decided to spend it with me. I rather enjoy the way she cares for me. It's not clean nor do I wear much clothing but it is enjoyable. I learned that Cora is a decent cook. She loved the gas stove once I showed her how to use it. She made a hearty stew for lunch and afterwards we cuddled on the couch. She even helped me bathe. We got ourselves cleaned up and returned to the living room just in time to welcome Banit home. She was covered in mud. She must have fallen. Cora had her go around to the back of the house and strip before coming inside. Banit went straight upstairs and bathed before coming back down. By then Lilly and Bobby had arrived. Bobby too was muddy. He jumped into a puddle and slipped. Lilly gave him a hard time. He took his clothes off on the porch and got himself cleaned up. Lilly had a head start on her homework and so we had a rare occasion where she finished before Bobby. Cora helped her and showed her a couple of tricks to help her in the future with her arithmetic. I just sat back and watched everything. Cora said I had a strange look on my face. I didn't mean too. She said that it looked like I was a proud father watching his kids. I guess that's accurate enough. That's about how I felt. She started calling me Papa after that. "Papa" caught me off guard and surprised me. I didn't know how to react to that. That's not something I ever thought I'd be called, even only jokingly. Cora was busy laughing at that as Charlie paid us a visit. Cora told Charlie. Charlie looked up at me and asked, "So Mistah, Bobby gonna start callin' you Papa?" Bobby and I both stared at each other. I think we both were waiting on what the other was going to say. Fortunately Charlie continued and asked if she can call me Papa too. She started prattling on like she normally does. Bobby and I both sighed in relief. Cora looked like she was going to bust if she didn't laugh. I started after her to make her apologize for this but she started laughing and ran off. She waved goodbye to us as she left, laughing the entire time. Charlie said that her parents wanted to invite Bobby over to stay with them this weekend. I thought that'd be a great idea. He packed a small bag of clothes and grabbed an umbrella before heading out with Charlie hanging off of his arm. Charlie just got through the door when she turned waved to me and said, "Bye Papa!" Lord.

It was strangely quiet. I walked by the table where Lilly was sitting. She grabbed my sleeve and quietly said, "Papa". We both blushed. I said that I don't think "Papa" is gonna work. She nodded and scurried off upstairs to grab her things. I figured I'd escort her, especially in this rain.

As we arrived I saw that Ma and the Girls were laughing about something. Then I saw Cora. I had a bad feeling about this. I no sooner made it inside when I felt all eyes on me. Ma straightened up and said, "Well hello, Papa." The place erupted in laughter. I smiled and walked up to her. I looked her in the eye and asked, "If I'm Papa, doesn't that make you Granny?" She suddenly got a serious look on her face and slapped the back of my head before turning and stomping off behind the bar. I swear the laughter was deafening. Ma kept her back to the floor and looked down at some glasses on the shelves. She was trying to hide the fact that she wouldn't mind being called "Granny" or something along those lines. I could tell that she was smiling at the thought.

That set the mood for the night. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. The Girls started calling me Papa so much that I started answering to it. As I walked Lilly home afterwards, I could tell that something was troubling her. So I asked. She nervously said that she wouldn't mind calling Ma Granny or Grandma, but she didn't want to call me Papa. I asked her why. She wouldn't say so I kept insisting. I guess I got on her nerves and as we walked inside the house she yelled, "'Cause I can't marry Papa!" She tried to catch herself but it was too late. She blushed extremely deeply and ran upstairs slamming her door shut. I felt bad but then I realized, she said it was because she couldn't marry someone she called papa, I thought it was because she didn't want to call someone besides her actual father Papa. I guess that's better. I thought that maybe I had done something bad. She was just embarrassed.

I'll talk to her about it tomorrow when she calms down.

January 30, 1892

Today was another quiet day. It's still raining a bit. We didn't do much other than laze about the house. I did however get a chance to talk to Lilly. I think it's high time we set things straight. I sat her down in her room and apologized for embarrassing her last night, but that we needed to sort things out. I told her that I know that she's in love with me and wants to marry me. I went on to tell her that I love her too, but that I love her as my daughter and want her to think of me, not as her father, but as her Papa. I said that I can never marry her as it wouldn't be fair to her. I'd be an old man when she's still a young woman. We spent most of the morning talking about that. I won't repeat what was said as things got very personal. I can say that that we fought a couple of times but in the end I think she understood where I was coming from. After our talk I left her alone to think about it. Ma stood outside of the door and said that she's glad I finally had that talk with her.

It was a long time before she came downstairs. It was obvious that she had been crying. She saw Ma sitting on the couch and climbed into her lap. Ma hugged her and gently stroked her hair. Banit sat next to her and patted her back and hugged her as well. I thought that the best thing I could do was to stay quiet and out of sight. I sat in a chair in the next room pretending to be reading the newspaper. Really I was worried about Lilly. She eventually dried her eyes and looked around. She saw me and walked up to me. She threw her arms around me and said that she was sorry if she made things difficult for me. I told her that it was alright and that I had fun with it. She chuckled a little before saying, "You know, from now on, I'm calling you Papa." I started laughing, which got her laughing and before long we weren't sure if we were laughing or crying or both. Once we settled down I heard her stomach growl and she said, "I'm hungry." We laughed at that a bit. Ma said that she'd fix us lunch and then she had to head out. We ate and spent the rest of the day playing games until it was time for her to get ready for her show. True to her word though, she called me Papa all day.

Banit and I walked Lilly to The Pasture. Lilly was definitely feeling better. We made it about a block when she looked over at Banit and said that she has to start calling me Papa too. Banit thought about it for a minute, shrugged and called me Papa before throwing her arms around me hugging me tightly. Lilly stomped her foot, pulled my arm around her and hugged me as well. That made walking very difficult.

As we approached The Pasture I stopped and asked her, "So, we can't keep calling Ma "Ma" if I'm Papa. That's just weird. What are we gonna call her?" We thought about it for a while. I started listing off everything I could think of. Banit asked about Grandma but it came out Granna. Lilly and I looked at each other and smiled. That'd be perfect. We walked in and found Ma. Lilly looked up at her and said, "Since I'm calling him Papa now. I can't call you Ma. So, can I call you Granna?" Ma thought about that. A nearby drunk overheard that and called her Granna. Ma slapped him upside the head knocking him to the floor. She stood over him and said, "Only my kids can call me Granna!" Everyone else cheered and applauded her. Ma hugged Lilly and looked over at Banit and said, "You an' Bobby call me Granna too!" She pulled Banit in for the hug as well. Ma "Granna" seemed to have a bounce in her step and was very happy the rest of the night.

Lilly had a great show.

January 31, 1892

Bobby joined us at Church today. Lilly told him about Ma and my name change. I told him that he didn't have to call me Papa if he didn't want to. He shook his head and said that wouldn't mind. So from now on, I'm going to have to listen for "Papa".

Cora came by after Church. She delivered Banit's dress that had gotten all muddy. She took it home and washed it for her. Banit thanked her and hugged her. She said that she's been looking for it everywhere and couldn't find it. I was wondering what she was looking for. Ma invited her in for lunch. She asked what put Ma in such a good mood. So I told her. She laughed about it for a minute but said that that's the cutest thing she's heard in a long time and that it fits. She looked over at Lilly and asked, "So, I don't suppose there's any chance that you could call me Mama?" Lilly glared at her and said, "No..." Cora pouted a bit, but Ma and I laughed at her.

That's pretty much how the day went. Tomorrow's going to be different though. I think it'll be fairly busy. Tomorrow is when Eloi will have his new trial.

February 1, 1892

Today is Eloi's trial. I hope everything goes well for him. I'll do my best to see him through this. The trial is at ten this morning so I had time to walk Lilly and Bobby to school and see Banit off on the trolley. When I saw Lilly and Bobby off she shyly looked up to me and said, "Bye, Papa." Oh! She can be so adorable when she wants to. Bobby ran off to go play with his friends. When I returned to the house Ma was up already. She was very happy. She was humming and dancing around acting like a fool. I asked her why she was acting that way and she replied, "I was startin' to think that no one would ever call me Granna! I'm so happy!" She thought about it for a second and asked, "Where did Granna come from? Why not Grandma or somethin' like that?" I told her that Banit was trying to say Grandma but it came out as Granna. She laughed and thought that was a great reason.

Eventually I wandered over to the courthouse. Luckily the presiding judge is the same one that released Henry to me. I believe that he's a reasonable sort. The prosecutor was harsh though and wanted Eloi to serve out the rest of his sentence and an additional one for escaping from jail. The trial lasted most of the day. We had several recesses for lunch and a couple of breaks. I testified and told them how Eloi had turned himself in to me willingly and how he hid the money so that the bank robbers wouldn't find it. I did my best for him. We didn't get to a verdict though and will have to wait until tomorrow. Honestly I'm tired. That was stressful. I don't like that prosecutor. You know its one thing to want to do your job properly. It's completely another to take such pleasure in it. I could see it in his eyes. He wanted to convict Eloi of everything he could think of. This is nothing but a game to him. What a bastard. I'd very much enjoy watching him lose. I'd enjoy it even more if I could watch him get his ass handed to him. The jury seems alright though. A few genuinely looked concerned when Eloi's health was mentioned. Speaking of which, Eloi looked great. I think the new food he's being given has helped him immeasurably. Emeric really needs to learn to talk more. He was giving the court fits with his silence. Oh well, I'll continue talking about that tomorrow.

Bobby was glad to see me. He finished his latest painting. It's the one of Charlie playing in the empty lot next to Mr. Harcourt's store. I can't believe how real it looks. He asked me if I'd go with him to get Mr. Harcourt's permission for him to enter it in a contest. I told him that Mr. Harcourt wouldn't have a problem with that but that I'd be happy to once the trial is over. He smiled and ran off to show someone else. That's when I heard Lilly calling for "Papa". I'm still not used to that, I almost ignored it. I hurried over to see what she wanted. She handed me a plate of food and said that she saved some dinner for me. What a sweet girl. I hugged her and ate. Lilly seems happy that she can call me Papa.

Post script: I'm so tired but I'm also so worried about Eloi that I can't sleep. Lord, protect him.

February 2, 1892

Back to the trial today, it didn't last as long as it did yesterday. We finished in the early afternoon. The jury took an hour to deliberate but came up with a unanimous decision. They said that on the evidence provided that Eloi is not guilty of the robbery. However, they did find him guilty of escaping from prison and from evading arrest. The prosecutor was not happy about the not guilty verdict but nearly rejoiced when he heard the rest, bastard. The Judge thought on this and said that Eloi is sentenced to three years for the escape and evasion charges, but that since Eloi cooperated with law enforcement and returned the money, that time previously served will be applied to his term. Therefore, Eloi is free to go. Eloi didn't quite understand Emeric was so happy that he actually hugged Eloi and smiled. He explained it to Eloi who nearly cried and thanked the judge promising to never do anything bad ever again. After the trial, Emeric and Eloi thanked me for everything and said that if I ever need anything to let them know. I invited them to come have drinks at The Pasture tonight to celebrate. Emeric declined saying that they just want to go home. I can certainly understand that. I saw them off and then headed home.

I came home nearly at the same time as Banit. I ran up, picked her up and swung her around. I was hugging her when Lilly heard the commotion and came outside. I saw her looking jealous so I sat Banit down and ran after her. She bolted but I caught her soon enough. I hugged her, swung her around and tickled her. She acted mad but she enjoyed it. I told her that we're going out for dinner. She was excited about that. I didn't see Bobby so I went looking for him. I found him walking with Charlie towards the Young's house. I snuck up behind him, lifted him up on my shoulders and spun. I scared him at first until he realized who I was then he started laughing. Charlie wanted in so I tossed her up on the other shoulder and spun. I heard some laughter and saw that some young women were laughing at me. I couldn't care less. I am just so happy right now. I told Bobby not to be late for dinner as I'm planning on taking everyone out. I invited Charlie along as well. She prattled nearly non-stop and impossibly fast, I guess my excitement got to her as well. She wanted to go home and change, so she hurried off. Bobby and I went home. It was going to be a while before it was time so I offered to take him over to the General Store to talk to Mr. Harcourt. He smiled and quickly fetched his painting.

Mr. Harcourt was a bit busy but was glad to see us. I told him about the trial and everything. He laughed and said that all of that must have made me happy. It did. We finally got around to Bobby. Bobby asked him if he could enter his painting in that contest. He showed it to Mr. Harcourt. Mr. Harcourt was stunned. He asked, "Bobby! Did you really paint this? It looks real!" Bobby smiled and nodded. Mr. Harcourt said that he'd be happy to let Bobby enter his painting he even offered to buy it off of him when he's done with it. Bobby smiled and tried to hide behind his work. He went on to say that he'd like to commission a painting if Bobby thought he was up to it. They were about to start discussing it but I had to stop them. It was nearly time for us to head out for dinner. Mr. Harcourt said to come by anytime to discuss the painting.

We returned home to find Lilly giving Charlie lessons in table manners. That embarrassed Charlie a bit but we didn't say anything. I gathered everyone up and we headed out. The restaurant isn't far from The Pasture so we swung by and talked Ma into going with us. It's a slow night for her anyways. Dinner was great. I told them about the trial and what's happening with Emeric and Eloi. Ma was very happy to hear that everything has worked out. I really enjoyed dinner. Charlie was hilarious. She was trying so hard to be proper but just couldn't contain herself. She got mad at the admittedly rude waiter so she took off her panties and threw them in his face. I nearly died laughing! Why her panties? Ha ha ha! Lord!

This has been a strange month but a good one. I'm starting to get used to being called Papa and Ma is in love with being called Granna. We nearly got kicked out of the restaurant tonight but I don't think I'd change a thing about it. What an unbelievable time I've had.
