Paul then

Paul stood outside Jill's place, hitching his backpack up his shoulders.

He knocked again then took out his key and went inside.

"Jill we are going to be late," he yelled up the stairs.

"No no no no, I'm hurrying," Jill yelled back.

"Hey Paul, are you hungry," Mama Greyhouse asked.

"I'm ok... is that fried fish and cheese," he asked.

"Yes, Jill seems to eat more like you every summer," Mama said.

"What, fish and cheese what's wrong with that they're great," he said giving Mama a hug.

"Mom, I can't find my headband, I can't go without my headband," Jill yelled from the bathroom slamming drawers.

"See there's time for a snack," Mama said, "Honey you'll live if you don't have your headband."

"It's like you don't even understand mom, I really need it," Jill said flashing through the hall to her bedroom.

"Are you nervous about the new school year Paul," Mama asked.

"No it can't be that different from last year," He said taking a plate and sitting down at the table.

"Well the block schedule will be new for you, right," Mama asked.

"Yeah, we get our schedule in homeroom hopefully I have Timmy or Jill in my classes this year," He said then dug into the fish.

"I made sure you all had some, I talked with someone in the front Office," Mama said.

"Your awesome Mama," He said tail darting back and forth.

"You always say that after I feed you," Mama said.

"Mom I need your- never mind I found it," Jill came running into the kitchen in a white t-shirt with pink sleeves and khaki capris, "Oh Paul you got groomed looks great. Mom where's my lunch?"

"In the fridge honey," mama said.

"Thanks mom- oh no my back pack," Jill ran out of the room.

"You have your lunch right," Mama asked.

"Yeah I have a tofu sandwich," he said.

"I'll trade you, I love tofu," Jill said running past to the living room.

"Would you make sure she has her lunch," Mama said passing a paper bag from the fridge.

"Mom, I can't find my backpack," Jill yelled.

"Is it with the coats honey," Mama said.

He took his plate to the sink and rinsed it off.

"Oh found it, hurry up Paul we are so going to be late," Jill said.

He rolled his eyes at mama who chuckled and gave him one more hug.

"Will we see you after school," Mama asked.

"Not sure, we'll be here, moms or over at Timmy's," He said, "Love you got to run."

He followed Jill out the door, she still didn't have her headband.

"Goddess Paul, we are going to be so late," Jill said running ahead, "Hurry up."

"I showed up on time, how much do you want to bet Timmy is already in homeroom," He asked.

"It's not my fault you know you need to show up early to make sure I'm on time," Jill said, "so did you get all new clothes too."

"Not all new but I grew a bunch this summer didn't you notice," He said.

"I Uhm, yes you look healthy," Jill said playing with her tail then grimaced.

"What's wrong," he asked as they turned left onto Hyland way.

"Oh nothing... Timmy didn't wait," Jill said.

"Yeah, but I thought you just noticed you still don't have your headband," he said.

"Goddess Paul... should I go back," Jill asked wringing her tail in her paws.

"No you look great without it," he said.

"Thanks," she said nudging her shoulder to his triceps.

They walked passed the field their home room was in a south eastern portable.

Runners from a gym class and Soccer passed by on the field and he tickled all over when he looked at an older guy's butt.

"Paul what are you thinking about," Jill asked.

"Oh," He flushed, "I-I'm not sure, do you think I'm handsome, I mean, I'll never be big like all those guys out there."

"Yeah, Paul you're handsome, you could be on the soccer team if you want, or you could do life guard training with me," She said.

"That would mess up my paper route," he said as the first period bell went off, "But it would be fun."

"Well if not life guarding would you want to try dance class with me, I think we could have fun," Jill asked as they jogged.

"Dance never thought about it," He said, "I'd probably be horrible at it."

"That's fine we can be terrible together," Jill said, "Ratwoman and Catman all over again."

"Yeah, let's do it," He said.

"Really, OMG this will be so great," Jill said as they entered homeroom.

Several people they knew waved but Timmy rushed over before they could join anyone's conversations, "Where were you two, I had to lie and say Jill left her backpack."

"Well lost is a better description," he said, "but I got a second breakfast so it worked out."

Jill said, "It's not my fault things like to move around, after I set them down."

"Yeah it's those horrible teleporting, whatever you happened to have lost, they are downright evil," Timmy said, "Come on get your schedules."

They when to Mrs. Blackwell and got the printouts.

"I got Science, Math and English with Paul," Jill said.

"Then we all have Science together, Timmy and I also have Gym, and History," He said.

"Looks like Jill and I have Dance and home economics," Timmy said.

"Paul if you want to change classes I think you need a form," Jill said.

"What class are you changing Paul," Timmy asked.

"Jill convinced me to do dance," He said with air quotes.

"I'm glad you're joining us," Timmy said.

"Yeah it'll be fun, Jill wanted me to do swimming but that would mess up my paper route."

"Well if you could come when she gives me lessons I'd like that, I know you're a life guard Jill but water is scary," Timmy said.

"Timmy it's fine I'm the life guard for the little tikes end of the pool you're too big for me to carry," Jill said.

"Yeah I can help..." He said, "Timmy your new clothes are so tight on you," a warm tickling washed over him again.

Timmy beamed, "My mom got me a shearing kit- for swimming, getting your own back is hard. Paul could you make sure its ok before we go to the pool?"

"Ye-Ah," He said voice braking, getting a laugh from Jill, "I can help."

"Sweet, Jill is the pool open today, I got a suit and everything," Timmy asked.

"Yeah let's go home get you ready and bike over," Jill said, "Paul get the class change form, the bell for next periods about to go off."

"Now you get a sense for the time," he said over his shoulder heading to Mrs. Blackwell.

"Mrs. Blackwell, do you have a class change form I want to switch electives," he asked when he reached her desk.

"Oh you will need to get it in the main office, I'll write you a hall pass," She said.

He waved the pass at Jill and Timmy then headed to the main office.

Half way there the bell went off and the halls filled with students. Two older guys moved through the hall ahead of him, a Lion and Tiger, when he passed into the cloud of their cinnamon scents he tickled all over again. He stopped till they got further ahead so he could breathe normally after a dizzy spell, What's wrong am I getting sick, why am I all sweaty?

Once he reached the main office the secretary pointed him to the counselor's office. The counselor was with another student. While he waited, he rifled through fliers on the poster board. One of the fliers had a lion he couldn't stop staring at on the cover. He took it. The title was Flag Poetry Night, and had a Rainbow banner down the side. The counselor's door started to open, he jammed the flier in his bag heart racing.

A tall horse left the office and headed back to class leaving an oaty scent behind.

"How can I help you, I'm Mrs. Varava," the counselor said.

"Oh, I'm Paul, I was just looking at the board here," he said flushing as she looked where the flier had been.

"Yeah it's a great place to find special interest notices, was there something you wanted to talk about today," Mrs. Varava asked.

"Yes I was hoping to change my elective," he said.

"Oh, I can help you fill out the form, do you have your current schedule," she asked.

"Yeah here."

"Ah so you have Science, Gym, Math, Computer Lab, English, Shop, and History. You said you wanted to change your elective that will be computer lab or shop. What classes did you want to take instead," She asked.

He flushed, "I'm interested in Dance or Home ec my best friends are in those classes, but I want to keep shop, I like tools..."

"Do you know the times of the class," she asked.

"No, I'm Sorry I have my friend's names, Jill Greyhouse, and Timothy Clark," He said.

"Oh Timmy, I know him and Jill's mom," Mrs. Varava said.

"How do you know Timmy," he asked.

"He wanted to talk about life and the future, and like you make sure he had classes with you and Jill, but particularly you," She said.

He felt that weird tickling again, and his voice broke, "Is thAre a way I can do those classes with them."

"Let's look it up on the computer," Mrs. Varava said.

Mrs. Varava hung an equal sticker in her window and a rainbow flag above her computer both sat at eye level as he entered the office. He shifted so he couldn't see them, not wanting the counselor to think he was looking at them.

"Home ec lines up with computer lab nicely, however Dance is at the same time as Shop so you'll have to pick one this semester," She said.

"I have to pick...I wanted both but I kinda need shop," he said.

"Well in February you can make new choices if you want the classes together ask if they will join up in shop that semester, or you can do shop now," She said.

"I guess, I really want to learn to do helpful things, for when I'm a dad," He said shifting his backpack.

"Why is it so important to you," she asked.

"Because it's the only way I'll get to learn it, my mom's a single mom," He said.

"You know she might be able to teach you, dads aren't the only ones that can teach you things," She said.

"I guess... can I have the two-classes changed I'll ask Jill and Timmy if we can do shop next time." He said.

"It will just take a sec then I'll print the new schedule and get you another hall pass," Mrs. Varava said.

"You really think mom might know tools," he asked, "cause I doubt she knows anything."

"Yeah, I do I think she will surprise you," she said walking to the printer.

"Maybe but her surprises suck," He said.

"Well no one's perfect, here's the schedule one more sec... here's your pass," Mrs. Varava said, "feel free to stop by if you ever need to talk."

"Can do thanks." He said then ran out of the office putting the new schedule in his bag. He uncrumpled the flier while he walked to a garbage can staring at the smiling lion. At the can he checked up and down the hall bit his lip and stuffed the flier back into his bag. He slung his bag back over his shoulder and ran to class.

Passing the row of windows to the science room Timmy caught his eye sitting on his backwards facing chair arms on the backrest and butt sticking out in those new tight jeans. That warmth and the tickling feeling came over
