#1 of Kirren Stories

Okay just too sort of follow the original slightly I wanted to post quotes which sum up the story slightly since I'm not good at poetry and don't want to limit myself to a poem's boundaries as I write. So instead you'll get quotes. These quotes will sum it up and may be altered slightly to fit the section the first is dubbed "Ignorance was Bliss" from the quote; "Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise." ~ Thomas Gray. I think this sums up the story nicely. Kirren finds the truth behind why the furries were created and finds that he was better off not knowing.

This is a Continuation of Zerink's Series "Kirren's New Life" done with his permission. http://zerink.sofurry.com/ is his user page

Part two is entitled 'No rest for the weary.'

Part one: Ignorance was bliss

Kirren awoke in a cold sweat made worse by his humming air conditioner doing what it did best. His dreams had become erratic of late and tonight was no different. He sighed rolling out of bed and turning on the light. It was May 6th and his air conditioner worked non-stop to keep Kirren from sweating even in the cool summer night. A quick survey of the room would find that it was only slightly cluttered with sheets strewn across the floor. It was a quaint room fit for an average teen. Kirren rubbed the sleep from his eyes and glanced at the clock. In the dimly lit room his small digital clock buzzed a hazy blue time which after several second read to him as 2:36 am. Cursing beneath his breath, he walked quietly down the hall to the kitchen. His house was a single floor with a simple enough layout.

In the kitchen he removed a small glass from a cabinet and filled it up with tap water, marveling at the simplicity of the water's flow. He shut the water off and brought the glass to his muzzle before tipping it back and letting the cool water flow into his mouth. It was refreshing and Kirren felt oddly thankful that it was there when he needed it. He quickly finished his drink and set the glass down on the counter before walking back to his room. The light above flickered softly as the air conditioner kicked back up to full intensity as if it's overseer would punish it for needing to relax. Kirren simply sighed softly, shutting the light off, before walking back to his bed and crawling back into it.

He stared at the ceiling for a few moments as his body settled back into a sleepy haze. Lulled by the soft hum of the air conditioner he drifted back into the unrest he was obligated to call sleep. His mind filled with happy images in his near comatose state. Pictures of loved ones, crushes, and friends danced through his mind. One by one these shattered in his mind to scenes of carnage. Furry bodies littered a large field; several live furries ran by obviously frightened and screaming. Several shots rang out and one by one the furries fell, lifeless, to the ground. Kirren tossed in his sleep and gripped the sheets tightly whimpering as another scene played out. It was a dense forest which he recognized vaguely as if he had been there before.

His paw was covered in a sticky red fluid, which his sense of smell immediately identified as blood. He looked down to see, much to his horror, that his friend Kael rested in his arms with a large gaping hole in his side. Blood oozed slowly from the open wound as he heard his friend cough weakly. He whimpered softly as his friend whispered to him in his sleepy haze. "We're so close..." Another softer whimper escaped his muzzle as his friend continued. "I love... you, Kirren...." the wounded ferret whispered before sighing and drifting from his reach. Just as he began to let go his ears twitched to the sound of a soft click. He looked up only to wish he hadn't as he spied the barrel of a gun pointed at his face.

Its bearer, a man Kirren couldn't recognized, soothed him with a familiarly soft voice. "We gave you life, and now we're taking it back." The pitiful looking wolf's ears drooped as he watched the man gently squeeze the trigger. Kirren's body jerked awake as the sound of the gun was replaced instead by the sound of a buzzing alarm clock screaming at him to wake up. Kirren sat bolt upright turning the loud and obnoxious alarm clock off and running a paw through his fur. He was panting as he recovered from the shock of his nightmare. He couldn't clear his mind of why he was having these vividly violent dreams. Shaking it off he stood, turning the light back on and basking in its artificial glow as the sun began to rise.

He quickly dragged his clothes on and grabbed his wallet from the dresser. He stuffed this in his back pocket before randomly stuffing his books and papers for the day into his backpack. As he strode towards the door, shouldering the heavy book laden bag with a sigh, the phone rang. He growled in annoyance dropping his bag to the floor and walking over to pick up the receiver. "Hello?" he said in an almost harsh tone. "Pher residence." He continued, catching his tone this time and calming slightly.

The frantic voice on the phone spoke until Kirren realized who it was. "Kirren! Don't go to school today! Something's up with the humans! They're capturing us! Just run Kirren..." He seemed more shaken up than Kirren had thought possible. Before he could respond the ferret let out a whine and Kirren heard the receiver thud to the floor. Several seconds past filled only with the sounds of a scratching of nails to the ground, whines and finally the voice of a man entered his hearing. The man's voice was oddly familiar and Kirren's eyes widened slightly as he heard the man mention a facility.

Kirren's hackles raised as much as they could under his shirt as the voice came over the receiver clearer than before. He realized that this man was speaking to him directly. "Kirren...you're next on my list." He whispered before the receiver clicked. Kirren dropped the phone backing away in utter horror. Instinct told him to run, fear, however, held him in place. For several long minutes he stood there in utter disbelief. At the door a soft knock filled the room causing Kirren to jump and stare at the door. Thinking back to what his friend had just said Kirren walked to the door and looked out through the peek hole.

Much to his dismay, he found a pair of men carrying a battering ram up to the door. As a man to the side signaled Kirren ran. He dashed through the house in fear. As he entered his bedroom and crouched in his closet hugging his knees, the door burst open with a splintering crackle. The sound of footsteps filled the house as one by one man shouted signifying their areas were cleared. Slow and steady footsteps made their way to the closet where the young wolf sat shaking in fear. His tail tucked between his legs as he watched the door pull open. A human with piercing ruby-red eyes, close in color to the ruby colored eyes he was proud to call his, sneered down into the closet. "What...." Was all the terrified wolf could manage as the man raised a gun and pointed it at him.

"Get up, put your paws on your head, and don't try anything stupid." The man said in a harsh tone. Kirren obeyed keeping his tail tucked and his ears down as he stood placing his palms on his head. "You've caused us a lot of trouble before with having to hunt you down Kirren." The man whispered as two more humans entered the closet and handcuffed his paws behind his back. He was pulled from the closet and led by the men into the middle of the room while the red-eyed man loaded a small pistol with a red dart. "This time though...." The man cocked the gun and raised it to aim at his stomach. "You won't get the chance." The man whispered as he pulled the trigger. As the dart pierced Kirren's gut the man looked slightly disappointed.

Kirren fell limp in the other men's arms managing a weak realization. "You're..." he whispered as the darkness claimed him. The men holding him drug him outside and placed him in the back of the van.

The red-eyed man thought for a second then shook his head. "He can't....we took that from him." He whispered as he followed after the other officers. It wouldn't make sense for the memories to have followed through as there was no physical reason. Kirren's limp body was tossed into the back of a van that began speeding down the street. The red-eyed man simply shook his head and pulled out his cell phone as he watched another set of furries be pulled from their home bound to be unable to move aside from walk. Even then they refused to do even that as they were being dragged along as dead weight kicking and screaming what little they could through their leathery muzzles. As he began to dial his phone the other furries were tossed into a similar van that sped in the opposite direction.

"It's Kirren....Yeah we got him." The red-eyed man said. A few seconds of unintelligible talking fluttered through the phone before Kirren responded. "He didn't put up as much of a struggle as I had thought he would. He was hiding in his closet." He fell silent again as he heard more screams farther down the block followed by gunshots. A smiled crawled across his face as he muttered. "Will do Professor." before clicking the phone closed. "Going to be a long day boys." He said signaling for the other officers to clear the next house.

Somewhere in the back of his mind Kirren lay being shaken by some one. He could make out the voice, he knew all that they said and he felt wetness on his cheek coupled with the smell of salt in the air. He remembered this smell and tried to remember why. As if thinking this was the key, another scene unfolded in his mind. His friend Kael, who was beaten to within an inch of his life, stood fighting the principal of his school. He also remembered a stretcher before it hit him. Lifelessly glazed eyes staring at him. As it dawned on him that his friend had died his ears perked to a soft voice. "Kirren..." he could barely make out the words that followed but groaned weakly. "Kirren you gotta wake up man." The voice sounded insistent so he opened his eyes.

Kirren quickly regretted opening them as the sun burst into his vision with a blinding intensity. The young wolf groaned quietly as he snapped his eyes shut and rolled onto his side. Kael Sighed heavily as he finally awoke. He groaned lightly, assessing his position, before speaking."Kael?" he asked peeking through his eyelids at the ferret furry now hovering above him. The figure nodded before Kirren spoke again. "What the hell is going on?" he asked while Kael and another furry propped him up to sitting as best they could with their own restraints on.

Kael looked at Kirren and sighed. "I told you to run. Why didn't you run Kirren?" Kael glared at the wolf who shrunk back from him laying his ears back. Kael immediately regretted doing so. "I'm sorry Kirren..." he said sitting back and thumping his head against the side of the van. Kirren began to ask where they were being taken but was cut off by the fur sitting next to him.

"We're going to a 'facility'," He said sounding slightly annoyed. Kirren quirked his head and looked at the furry he hadn't paid much attention to a second ago. He was a white fox, tall and trim, with dazzling blue eyes. "That's what they're calling it anyway. From what I've heard during your captures it's a sorting building of sorts. I'm Darsil by the way," He said, smiling as best he could through a tight muzzle. As if on cue the van came to a halt causing Kirren to slide forward into Darsil. The doors opened to reveal several rifles pointed into the van at its occupants. A woman with blonde hair stepped out to greet the three furs looking them over.

She held a clipboard and began flipping through it mumbling, "Male, Fox." Finally she came to the paper she wanted. "Darsil Tersh?" She said in a slightly gruff voice looking up at the white Vulpine that sat near Kirren. He nodded prompting another bout of flipping through papers, "Ferret, Male." She mumbled before coming to a sheet. "Kael Tenril?" She asked receiving a low growl from the ferret. Once more she began flipping through her papers on the clipboard she held. "Which leaves us with..." The woman stared at the paper as if it held the secrets to the world before she whispered, "No..." One of the guards looked over the woman's shoulder nudged her. "Kirren Pher?" as she spoke she looked up catching Kirren's confused gaze.

"You know him Jen?" one of the guards asked. Jennifer took a hard look at the wolf before she sighed and shook her head. On cue another two guards came and stepped into the van lifting Darsil and leading him to the large ornate building followed by Kael until Kirren was left. One of the remaining guards began to step forward to retrieve Kirren before Jennifer waved him off and pulled a leash and collar from her side. She snapped the collar in place and gave the leash a light tug motioning for the guard to stay. The guard began to protest before another person bearing a clipboard came out to greet another group of vans. He returned his attention to ensuring there were no escape attempts as Jennifer led Kirren away.

The walk inside of the facility was quiet as Kirren kept his ears low and his tail tucked. There was no need, for the moment at least, to try anything as he was sure the instant he did he would have been shot. Before they reached the entrance to the building Kirren heard the woman speak to him. "Been a while Kirren, I figured you'd be the last furry to be caught alive." She said in a hushed tone as they walked into the building.

Kirren struggled to place her face much less her scent before giving up. "I'm sorry, do I know you?" he asked. Her response was a momentary relax in her hold on his leash and her pace slowed considerably as she led him through the building. She could feel her blood running cold as he said that and knew what it had meant in an instant. She neared a door that read, "Doctor Birch" and turned the knob opening the door. Jennifer led Kirren into the room and handed the leash to another guard before turning to the doctor and speaking. "Dr. Birch, Kirren Pher is here." Her voice sounded colder then before as she turned and walked out of the room closing the door behind her.

The guard wasted no time leading Kirren over to a chair in the center of the room. Kirren assumed he was to be seated but the grip on his arm from the guard told him otherwise. The doctor looked him in the eyes and said, "You won't struggle will you Kirren? No, no we made you better this time. I had hoped we'd be able to study you a bit further but it seems like any experiment there are bugs to be sifted out." The lupine's ears perked as he listened to the doctor explain. "You can speak wolf I don't kill furs for speaking." He said smiling slightly. The wolf kept his ears back as the doctor spoke.

"Why are you doing this?" he asked glancing to the guard who released his grip and returned to sitting in the corner.

"Remove your clothes, shoes and retrieve your ID if you will." The doctor said as politely as he could have given the circumstances. Kirren decided it best to go along with them at this point instead of trying to fight. He undid the buttons down the front of his shirt as the doctor began answering his question. "We are doing as we are told. We were told to bring you in, examine you for any flaws or problems, and then hand you over to Captain Simmons." He explained as the wolf slowly removed his pants. The guard in the corner sighed in exasperation as Kirren took his time, but received a sharp glare from the doctor.

"Captain Simmons?" Kirren asked retrieving his wallet from his pants. He pulled his ID from the folded leather and handed it to the doctor.

The doctor took the ID and looked at him expectantly. "All of your clothes Mr. Pher." He said looking to the white boxers the wolf had kept on. The guard in the corner chuckled, once more receiving a sharp glare from the doctor, before returning to silence. "I assure you; you have nothing I have not seen in the past so if you would remove them and have a seat we can get this over with." He said motioning to the chair. Kirren laid his ears back again and slipped his boxers from his hips and stepped out of them. The doctor whispered to the guard for a few seconds in a harsh tone before stepping over to Kirren. He held up his ID card and a pen pointing to the numbers in the corner. "These numbers, can you read them?" He said holding the card roughly two feet from his face. Kirren began to lean forward to see it but the doctor placed his hand on the wolf's chest and shook his head. "Can you read them?" he asked. The wolf nodded and the doctor smiled. "Good." He said withdrawing the card.

As the doctor neared him again he held an ophthalmoscope. He checked over Kirren's eyes before he began assessing his muscles and bone structures. The wolf sat as still as he could while the doctor checked over him. Several minutes later the doctor was busy jotting notes and Kirren was left sitting in the cooled room. "What is going on here?" Kirren asked shifting uncomfortably in the chair.

"Well..." the doctor replied walking back to him with a stethoscope. "During the last bout of furry gathering those gathered were put to work as slaves. We can only assume that is the case this time." The doctor looked over to the guard who rolled his eyes. The doctor disregarded this and pressed the stethoscope to the lupine's chest. "Breath deeply." He muttered listening intently to the wolf's body as air rushed in and flowed out. After a few seconds he returned to writing notes into the clipboard he carried.

"Well I would have expected nothing less of Gerald's master piece." The doctor whispered. As the doctor spoke the door behind him opened and a man Kirren immediately recognized from his house and dreams stepped into the room.

"Damn it doc can't you cover him up? It's disturbing to see me...well...him without his clothes." The figure said walking in and giving the guard a glare. The guard immediately stood, saluted him, and then walked from the room at a pace barely under a run. The doctor looked over at the man and looked slightly surprised. "Well doc? Told him about me yet?" he asked casting a glance to the doctor. Birch straightened up before answering.

"Good timing Kirren." He said to the man before walking back to the wolf in the chair. Kirren let out a soft whimper as he stared at the man before him in fear. "Looks like I may not have to..." the doctor whispered. "Kirren I see you recognize him so I'll clue you in. All of the furries in existence today are made of splicing a strand of human DNA with that of the closest animal to their personalities. Kirren's was Lupine DNA." He said looking to the marine in front of him. Kirren laid his ears back as the doctor explained and images rushed at him.

The memories flooded his mind and before he could sort through them the man the doctor had called 'Kirren' held a pistol towards him. "You are me, I am you. Why do you think you were able to kill so many people, hm? Why do you think you could have gotten here, so far from where anyone else could have gotten? It's because we're the same, wolf. Because you are me, you are able to do things that very few without years of training could do. You've killed so many, dodged several bullets, only because it was your instinct, as it is mine, after I've been trained, of course." Kirren watched as his body moved back attempting to crawl away before several shots rang out each missing him by inches. The man was toying with him as he desperately made for any chance he had at escape. "Don't bother running, Kirren. This is the end for you. I know everything you plan to do, everything you want to do, and everything you are going to do. There is nothing you can hide from me." Again he watched himself make a break for it running into his room. In seconds the man followed and slammed the butt of the gun to his doppelganger's shoulder. He pinned the whimpering wolf to the bed beneath his boot. Kirren realized all too well what was about to happen and his blood ran cold.

"You've suffered, haven't you? Because you've suffered, you've succeeded. The experiment is over now, Kirren. You can rest, you can die in peace. Don't you want that? It's much better than being alone in this world, don't you think?" the man said preparing to shoot

The wolf thought began to punch at the leg pinning him down in desperation as his fear overthrew his mind. He struggled ever harder, kicking the man's legs. However, it was to no avail. He gritted his teeth and said, "I have to live...." Kirren's body and senses froze as he stared at the scene.

The man shook his head. "No you don't, Kirren. Don't you understand that? You don't have to live. It's over; we don't need to test it anymore. I know what you've been through."

The wolf shouted, "How the hell could you possibly know what I've been through?! Were you there?!"

The man shrugged before he spoke again. "I didn't need to be. You were there, and you are me. It's as simple as that, wolf. But now, we have to end this. It was a good run, don't you think?"

The wolf kicked at his legs even more, thrashing about, trying to get free, but it did not work. He cried loudly, sobbing, tears of sorrow and rage flowing out. "Then why the fuck did I live?!"

The pistol moved up and rested against the wolf's chest. "You lived so we could find our faults, Kirren. And now you will die so that we can move on. We gave you life, and now we're taking it back." The wolf whimpered softly as he watched the man pull the trigger slowly. The shot rang out as Kirren snapped back to the present and growled laying his ears back. The man before him simply chuckled and looked at him taking a step closer. "You know better wolf." The man said softly in a tone that sent chills down his spine.

The man backed away smiling as he turned to the doctor. "So this is where I get to take him off your hands right Birch?" he said ignoring the wolf completely now. The doctor nodded and looked to Kirren before shrugging.

"Just don't kill him this time. We need this one to stay alive until we can prove he'll be suitable for buying." The doctor looked at Kirren again. "I suppose we'll have to return to formalities though Simmons." He said causing the man to laugh.

"Yeah I suppose we will." Simmons' said turning to the wolf and walking towards him. "Though I think you will remain Kirren so I don't have all the furry bastards looking at me while I'm watching you." He mumbled eyeing the lupine carefully. The doctor handed Simmons the clipboard he had been writing on and patted him on his shoulder. "Alright wolf let's go." Simmons said turning to the door. Kirren stood from the chair, drooping his tail to cover his furry rear, before following Simmons.

There was no relief when he was released from the room. The door opened and he was led out of the room behind the stern marine. "You'll follow me Kirren." Simmons said in a deadly tone. "Or you won't make it out of this building alive." Kirren's ears lowered with his tail as he followed Simmons down the hall to another examination room. To his surprise the woman from before named Jennifer led Kael out of the room and spoke to Simmons for a few minutes before she walked past Kirren looking a bit disappointed. Kirren felt slightly guilty about being unable to remember her but was more concerned now on staying alive. His friend giggled quietly at Kirren having no clothes before Simmons glared at him and he quieted down.

From another Exam room they retrieved Darsil and headed, in line, to a glass door that read 'Dorms'. They were led through the building and towards a room near the end of the hall where Simmons opened the door and gestured them inside. Once inside of the room they saw three beds with a pillow and blanket a piece and two doors. Simmons closed the door behind them and sat in a chair grinning. "Welcome to hell." He said looking at the three of them. "Clothes are on the beds, bathroom is on the right and I am on the left. He said quickly pointing to the doors. As he spoke, the furs looked around the room. It was the barest minimum one could live comfortably in and Kirren guessed that was the point.

"The last time we did this you fuzzy bastards got nothing but the ground and your fur. This time however, you get clothes, beds, and facilities. All because in the year it took to re-establish this program some furry lover was put in charge. And now we move to the point." He murmured. "Think of this as boot camp. You will either all pass or you will repeat this until you do. You will not speak unless you are told to, you will not act out, and you will refer to me as 'sir' or Simmons. Am I clear?" Simmons waited for a second while the three nodded before screaming. "I don't want to hear your heads rattle when I ask you a question!" All three of the furs jumped back slightly before snapping off a quick round of 'Yes, sir's and straightening back up.

"Well, now that that is out of the way." Simmons turned around and unplugged the camera in the corner before turning back. "Kirren may know why you're here but you two," he said motioning to Darsil and Kael. "You may not. So I'll tell you. You're here to be trained. Once we are sure you can perform any task without much difficulty you'll be sold." Kael's ears drooped as Simmons spoke. "Mind you we are training you as a group so you will at least stay together when sold." He added before looking to Kirren.

"Wolf you have that look in your eye." He muttered. Kirren's eyes felt like they were burning and he wanted nothing more than to attack Simmons. "Camera's off now so say what you will." Simmons said before falling quiet.

Kirren clenched his paw into a fist and snarled. "You...you killed us." He whispered becoming more enraged.

Simmons looked slightly surprised but managed to catch himself. "So you do have some sort of recollection." He murmured looking into the wolf's scarlet eyes. "Look wolf if it were up to me you'd be free to do whatever you want." Simmons said looking a bit bored now. "As it stands though I was ordered to sniff you out, no pun intended, and terminate the experiment." Simmons looked slightly surprised at the wolf before he stood up and walked to the door. "You have ten minutes. Do what you need, pick out a bed, get dressed and you get the-once-around before lights out." He said walking out of the room and closing the door.

Kael immediately turned to Kirren and whispered. "He killed us? What do you mean?" Kael waited for his answer but picked up his clothes and began dressing. Kirren shook his head and looked to Kael.

"Don't worry about it for now Kael." He whispered picking up a set of clothes with his name on it. For all intents and purposes this was prison and they knew it. After several minutes the three stood fully clothed and Simmons opened the door to find Kirren hugging Kael on the bed.

"Alright furs I'm supposed to give you a once around before lights out so follow me and we'll get this done with and go to sleep." Simmons glanced over at Kirren and Kael. "You two..." he mumbled turning and walking. "I really hope that was comforting." He whispered to himself.

One by one the furs filed out of the room in their white prison-like garb and followed Simmons around quietly. "The mess hall is down this hall and will always have something out to eat." He explained pointing to a hall with a delicious smell wafting down it. "You'll have free range of the facility tomorrow as long as you stay together and on schedule. Tardiness from one of you results in all of you being punished so keep it in mind." He said leading them to another hall.

"Weight room is down this hall as well as the Gymnasium and you will report there in the morning for calisthenics. You will occasionally be put to work by random humans on the premises to get you used to taking orders as they come up. Arguments, complaining, disagreements of any type will not be tolerated and from this moment on you are the equivalence of beasts of burden am I clear?" Simmons turned on the spot to see the three almost run over themselves before scrambling and snapping another round of 'yes, sir's off.

It was a quiet walk back to the dorms after he had shown them the basic areas. In their room Simmons plugged the camera in the corner back in and sighed. "You'll be up at dawn, literally. You are to rest as much as you can tonight. You can talk all you want but tomorrow we will be pushing your limits until they break so rest as much as you can." Simmons looked to Kirren who laid his ears back and quickly looked elsewhere. "Wolf if you have something to say, say it." He said glaring at the lupine before him.

Kirren shook his head and sat on a bed prompting Simmons to enter his room and close the door behind him. Kael stepped over and sat next to the wolf laying his head on the wolf's shoulder. Darsil flopped onto his bed and sighed hugging the pillow that was on it. "Today officially sucks." He mumbled burying his face into the fluffy whiteness he clutched.

"Could be..." Kael was cut off by Kirren who had placed his paw onto the ferret's chest. "Kirren?" he asked looking up at the wolf.

"Don't say it." He whispered looking into the ferret's eyes. The wolf leaned back and pulled Kael to him hugging him tightly. Within minutes the ferret was murring quietly next to Kirren on the bed. Darsil flipped the lights off and the room was illuminated only by a small blinking light on the camera. Kirren fell into a dark sleep from the stress of the day. He did not feel tired physically but mentally he struggled to wrap his mind around all that was said of this. The familiarity of this situation set back in as his dreams turned to sleep.
