#3 of Second Sight

Location: Nulline Enforcer Compound.

Time: 14:10pm.

Year: 2092, April 10th.

I woke up silently as always. I looked around what looked like my room at the Enforcer Compound. I noticed the empty crate which held my Hellfire armor. I was lying in my bed, just wearing a skintight black shirt and a pair of trousers. I wasn't sure that I was the only person here, so I decided to get up and have a quick look around.

I staggered into the bathroom, just realizing what had happened. The last thing I knew, I was in the middle of a drug bust with three other Hellfires. I was supposed to kill the boss of the whole operation. I remember killing him, as well as a dozen guards in the process. I also remember seeing that girl again; the one in my dreams. Then the next thing I knew, I had either died or passed out.

I sighed and stared at my reflection in the bathroom mirror. I was alive, but I wasn't sure how. I was certain that I had died; crushed by that mysterious girl. I wasn't sure how I had ended up back in my room, either. I must have stood there for more that ten minutes, staring at myself. I had noticed that my tail-fur was turning a much darker shad of grey; almost black.

I decided to grab a quick shower before exiting my room and having a look around. Whilst I was getting dressed, I didn't see my armor at all; not even in my wardrobe. I had to go out dressed in my dull grey shirt and trousers instead. I stepped out of my room and into the empty corridor. I thought that it'd be best to go down to the mess hall; that was where I'd be most likely to meet up with Agustus and the other Hellfires.

Luckily, I was right. The mess hall was as packed and loud as the last few times that I had entered. No one paid much attention to me as I edged past the crowds to the back of the room, where the three-man party were sitting, looking up and inviting me over. I walked through the empty spaces that separated them from the average soldiers.

I sat myself down between Millard and Agustus. We were all sitting around a medium round table, looking out the window. It was raining hard; anyone could tell by simply listening to the rain pattering against the walls. I looked back to the table, down at three tall glasses filled with some kind of alcohol.

"Good to see you're back to normal." Agustus said, still staring out the window. "Once I found you, you were passed out."

I nodded, staying quiet. I was still a little shaken up from my experience back in the apartments. The silence droned on for at least five minutes, until I finally spoke up.

"Did you see anything odd when you found me?" I asked quietly. "Any bodies, any trails of blood?"

"Nothing." The Wolf replied, confused. "Why? Did you see anything?"

"Nothing." I lied, looking down at the table. "Just wondering; I think I saw something like that. I may have been mistaken."

"You must have been exhausted." Agustus reasoned. "That reminds me; Vern wanted me to tell you to go down to the medical wing; just for a check up."

I nodded and got up from my seat, heading out of the mess hall and down to the medical wing. On the way, I couldn't help but notice that there were fewer patrols than yesterday; but I had seen a familiar face. It was Vern, exiting one of the many doors surrounding the corridors.

"Kobalt." He called over. "Good to see you're up and alive."

"Same goes for you." I replied. "I thought I'd been killed after completing the mission."

"What do you mean by that?" Vern asked curiously. I just shrugged and walked over to him.

"I need to get going." I explained. "I'm due for a checkup from the doctor down in the medical wing."

"Just skip it." He said, smiling. "You look fine. I'll just tell them you're back to normal; no problem."

I just stood there as Vern walked away, patting me on the shoulder. My mind had gone completely blank; I didn't know what I'd do after my checkup, so I just decided to go back to my room and relax. There was nothing else going on, so I had every right to just kick back until further notice.

I was lying in my bed, staring up at the ceiling and counting the number of tiles. After that, I'd count the number of screws holding the tiles up, and go back to the tiles. I constantly rolled my head from left to right, slowly drifting off to sleep. I sometimes wished I hadn't. If I had stayed awake, things may have been different...

I appeared in the hospital again. This time, I felt like I was in control of my body. Again, I saw the lights go out one by one, and the darkness creeping up on me. Instead of running away, I simply focused on my eyesight and brightened up my surroundings. Now I could see beyond the darkness, and what was hiding away inside.

Beyond the darkness, I saw something that looked like shadows. Shadows in the dark; it felt strange and scary, but I just stood still ad tried to identify them. They looked like people, all thin and bony, stretching their limbs outwards. After being satisfied that I knew what they were, I decided to run the other way, into the remaining lights.

I finally saw the lights go out, and turn to red. I saw the same child that I had seen two times before. This time, she was different; she wore a plain white dress that actually fit, and her hair was shoulder length and brown. I stared at her for a while; she was smiling at me, but not showing her teeth. I had a small guess as to what she was.

The girl was a Human. I had read about them in history; apparently, they were a mythical race that no one believed in anymore. People even claimed that Humans had inhabited Earth way back to the Stone Age. The only evidence of them was the whole Monkeys and Apes theory, saying that they had evolved from humans. I didn't believe all of that stuff, though. It was ridiculous at best.

I scowled and walked up to the girl, grabbing her by the neck and slamming her into a nearby wall. I gripped tighter and tighter, trying to break her neck.

"Who's that?" I heard a voice ask dreamily; possibly directed at the girl I was choking. "Is that a friend?"

I turned around, following the voice. I saw the girl sitting down on the ground, drawing on the floor, but still looking up at me. I looked back to the person I was choking. It was Joseph! I had broken his neck, and he was starting to turn to ash. This was obviously a dream, and I had taken the wrong approach. I sighed and sat down next to the girl.

"Who are you?" I asked, looking down at her. "Are you lost?"

"I'm not lost. I'm in you." The girl replied, tapping my legs with her left hand. "I'm Sarra, by the way. Are you lost, mister?"

"I'm never lost." I replied ominously; "I'm only in a different place. Besides, this is my dream. You don't get to tell me if I'm lost or not."

"I wasn't telling, but asking." Sarra replied, laughing. "Do you like my drawing?"

I looked down at the single picture in front of her. It looked like a city; but it was on fire. It was also supported by a few stick-like legs, which were breaking up, causing the city to fall. I blinked rapidly, and looked back up to the girl.

"It's scary." I muttered. "Little girls don't draw things like that. What are you, really?"

"I'm Sarra." She repeated. "Most people call me Arpeggio."

I picked up those last few words; she was called Arpeggio. I didn't know what to say after that. I just continued talking to her; and starting to enjoy it...

"Well, Arpeggio." I continued. "I'm Kobalt Kaiken; and I'm from...Arpeggio. Where are you from?"

"I'm not from anywhere." Sarra replied. "But you're from me; and I'm in you. It messes with your head when you think about it too much, don't you think?"

"What do you mean by 'in me'?" I asked. "Did I just make you up? Or do you just possess people like me?"

I knew what I was assuming. I was assuming that this girl was just 'magic'. No one truly believed in the paranormal or anything like that anymore. I was surprised when she actually answered the question.

"You know what I am." She replied mysteriously. "You may not remember, but you will in due time."

I didn't have anything more to say to her. I just sat there with her, watching her draw on the floor. We both stayed silent until she was finished. I looked down at the floor, expecting to see a picture. Instead, the floor had turned into a mirror, showing our reflections. Sarra looked up at me and smiled.

"I need to go now." She said, getting up. "I have to go somewhere; but we'll see each other again."

"Will you still be inside me when you get back?" I asked, getting up with her.

"Nope." Sarra replied bluntly. "I said we'll see each other again; I didn't say where. But I'll be leaving here forever. You'll have to come and find me. Think of it as hide and seek."

With that, Sarra walked away down the corridor, which was now a tunnel full of mirrors. I felt as if the mirrors were drawing me further and further in, when I just began to wake up.

I leant up and rubbed my eyes, cursing under my breath. I had obviously slept too long, since my body was aching and my joints were stiff. But more importantly, I felt as if I had lost a part of myself in that dream. The last few days hadn't been as normal as they should have been. I was going insane, and I was too afraid to tell anyone. Either that or I was too interested to have anyone step in and stop it.

Either way, I had got what I wanted. I was now back to normal - or what could be called normal considering my life. Sarra was out of my head, and I didn't experience any more delusions or hallucinations anymore. But once I had experienced it, I just realized how much I started to miss Sarra. I had realized how many questions I could have asked her, and how many of them could only be answered by her.

I had felt like I wasn't alone when Sarra was around; now she was gone, and I was left alone in the dark again. I couldn't even see through it all.
