#4 of Second Sight

Location: Nulline, Enforcer District, Apartment Complex Seventeen.

Time: 20:05pm.

Year: 2092, April 9th.

It took me and the team a while to reach the Apartment block, by which time I was left out of breath from carrying all this weight. Aside from my blue Hellfire armor, I was also carrying two combat knives strapped onto my legs, my spike rifle which I was slung over my left shoulder, and one small grenade, tucked in the inside of my coat.

"This is it." Agustus said, looking up at the block, which was practically a tower from where we were. All buildings in Nulline were like small and large towers; except for warehouses and bars.

"Roland." The wolf began, gathering us around him. "You'll be in charge of taking down the electric supply in the tower. Millard, you and I will be meeting the enemy head on."

Then Agustus turned to me. I could tell that he was smiling under his helmet. Obviously someone had to sneak around, and that someone was going to be me.

"Kobalt." Agustus continued, loading his rifle; "You'll be taking the head of whoever runs this joint. He'll most likely be under protection, so be careful."

I nodded, keeping quiet as usual. I watched the team load their large rifles and split up, heading for different objectives. Now I was left alone yet again. The block was practically connected to three more unimportant buildings, as if the city had been pushed together in some places. This would make it hard to find a way in.

I assumed that the person running the business would be on the highest floor. That way they could look down at their work. All I had to do was find a pipe; a few lined up windows, maybe even a rusty ladder would do me; but I saw nothing. I listened to the distant gunshots, probably caused by the Hellfires, and brought out my rifle.

I had no choice but to go through one of the surrounding buildings to at least reach higher ground. Luckily, the entrance to one of the small buildings was right next to the Apartment entrance. The door was blocked by some dry wood, so I had to bash it all down with the butt of my rifle before advancing through, leaving me out of breath.

In front of me was a flight of steps that was forced between two tight, wooden walls. I had to turn my body sideways to fit through the gap; my Hellfire Armor made it so that I was too large to fit through. With any luck, I wouldn't meet anyone along the way through and reach the roof with ease. I also noticed that this staircase covered the whole building, going in two or three separate directions, up and down and sideways; it was almost as if someone had made it so that the place was just one large maze of staircases.

I had come out from a small trapdoor that I had to force open with the butt of my gun again. I was on top of the small building, and was facing the corner of the tower of apartments. I still couldn't see any way of getting any further up the building apart from breaking through one of the small windows that were awkwardly placed around it; but it was my best shot.

The jump from the between both buildings was very short, so I had a good chance of getting through. The only problem was that I could make out two large men standing by what looked like a small wooden door. The window was too dirty to tell what the room looked like, but I could tell that the people standing inside were armed, and most likely working for the same person I was trying to kill.

I raised my gun, and aimed towards the first person; to my left. Once I pulled the trigger, my spike had been sent through the window, not breaking it at all, and impaled the person on the wall. I rotated my gun to the right and pulled the trigger again, sending another spike through the window and impaling the second person into the wall. I holstered my rifle and ran forward, preparing to break through.

My armor was covering almost all my body, and protected me from the shattering glass. The spikes had also 'softened' up the glass, making it easier to break through. I barely managed a roll, and bashed my right shoulder on the wooden wall, sending a shot of pain through my arm; but luckily I was left-handed. I looked around the room, and at the two men I had killed.

Both my spikes had been implanted into the hearts of both people. I barely had to try to pull both spikes out, leaving the two blood stained bodies leaving red marks on the bright grey wall. I forced open the door and stepped into another large corridor. I though about how I was always ending up in corridors. Like a tunnel, and I only went one way; never looking back, and defining my decisions.

I shook off the thought, and proceeded to the right, down the dimly lit corridor. I didn't have any run-ins with anyone whilst walking quickly down the snake-like tunnels until I reached the last corridor, which led up to an elevator, blocked by a large wooden gate. It was at least one way to get to higher ground faster, so I took that opportunity.

Someone must have seen me, because the next thing I knew around half a dozen people had appeared from the doors on both sides of the corridor. Half were simple Alley Cats, and the rest looked like Wolves.

"It's a Hellfire!" One of them shouted; "Fill him with holes!"

The people were equipped with small handguns, but still managed to fill the corridor with gunfire. I twisted and turned, avoiding most of the bullets; those that hit me were deflected by the blue metal on my coat. I managed to reach a door, where I forced it back and into the body of one of the Wolves; breaking the door and rendering the Wolf unconscious.

I rolled into one of the small rooms and took cover for no more than three seconds, and rolled out again; this time, pulling both my combat knives from my boots and holding them with the end of the grip facing my thumb. I forced my right knife into a Wolf's chest, and advanced again, leaving the knife where it was. My next dagger was brought up to a Cat's neck, where I slid the knife along and proceeded further down the corridor.

I had thrown the knife further into the small crowd, implanting itself in another Wolf's chest. There was only one person left; a large Wolf who drew a knife which was almost as long as his forearm. I had no knives, and my rifle would be useless in this close quarter situation. The Wolf advanced, raising his knife and preparing to cut me in half. Luckily, he was slow, so I was able to plant my hands on his shoulders, and lift myself up, bringing my knee into his face.

I landed quietly, and looked back at how many people I had killed. I retrieved both my knives and continued to the elevator. Unfortunately, the wooden gate was locked with a key. I searched all the bodies but didn't find anything that looked like a key, so I had to resort do doing things the old fashioned way.

I brought my knives up to my head, and slammed the blade down on the gate. I repeatedly bashed the wood with my knives, softening it up a bit. Then I holstered them both and brought out my gun, forcing the wood apart with the stock. I barely managed to get in and turn the elevator on, sending me up to the highest level of the building.

I had removed one of the tiles from underneath the floor, and hid away underneath the elevator, just hanging on. My plan was to arrive on the top floor, draw a few guards into the elevator and take care of them. After that, it would be easy to take out the kingpin of this place. It was completely foolproof.

It didn't take long for the elevator to reach the top level. By that time, my arm was aching from holding on to the bottom, and I was all too ready to strike. I heard a few confused muttering from the room I had arrived in.

"You two, see what's going on." One of them whispered. Obviously this person was the kingpin.

The two bodyguards had fallen neatly into my trap. I didn't even have to do anything; the person was stupid enough to let his guard down and send his bodyguards away. I pulled my grenade from my belt and pulled out the pin, attaching it to the bottom of the elevator. With that step taken, I pulled myself up from the hole and drew both knives.

I was quick enough to get up and roll past the two guards, impaling both my knives into their backs and forcing them into the elevator. My grenade detonated, causing the elevator to drop all the way down. That only left me and the kingpin. At least, that's what I thought.

There was one more bodyguard I had to take care of. A single Dragon; blood red scales, large, black baggy clothes, and no weapon. I took off my rifle and dropped it to the floor. This time, it would be a stand-up fight, with no weapons; only our fists and feet. The Dragon almost reached the ceiling, but I had the advantage of being quick and agile.

The Dragon was the first to lunge forward, bringing his right fist down on me. I twisted to my left and lunged back, grabbing his shoulders and bringing my knee up to his face. It felt like I was hitting iron, and I had landed clumsily on the floor. The bodyguard took this opportunity to strike again. This time, he drove his left fist into the ground, narrowly missing me as I rolled to the side and brought out a bundle of spikes.

I drove the first spike into the Dragon's eye, causing him to recoil back in pain. I lunged forward and drove two more spikes in both knees, making the Dragon lose balance and fall back. I had two spikes left, which I had forced into the Dragon's skull, finishing him off once and for all.

I got up, out of breath, and retrieved my rifle. I finally looked around the room for the first time. The walls were metal, and almost completely covered with glass windows so that the kingpin would be able to look over the city. In the back of the room was a large desk, with a black Wolf sitting behind it, looking at me and smiling.

"So, you're the Hellfire that's been causing all this trouble." The Wolf laughed, leaning back in his chair. "But you wouldn't shoot me without taking me away for questioning, would-."

I had cut him off with a single spike, lodged between his eyes. The Wolf slumped back in his seat, with a small stain of blood slowly dripping down onto the floor. I holstered my gun, and retrieved all my spikes.

"Now how do I get back down?" I asked myself, looking around for an exit. Unfortunately, the only exit was the elevator which I had destroyed.

I just sat down on the floor, thinking of a way to get down to the ground floor; but the only way I could think of was the window, and I didn't even want to entertain that option. Instead, I would have to climb down the elevator shaft. It would be much safer than the whole window idea.

I walked over to the edge, and looked down the wide shaft. There was a small maintenance ladder in the far left corner. It looked a little rusted, but I was able to jump across to it and climb down without much trouble. I only lost some footing a few times, and a few of the bars had fallen off, causing me to lose balance and almost fall all the way down.

I arrived on the same floor that I broke into. I noticed that the bodies were all gone, though. There were blood stains all over the wooden floor, which looked like the bodies had been dragged down the corridor. I had to go in the same direction as the blood anyway, so there was no harm in looking for the bodies.

I started to feel cold. It was the same feeling that I had experienced a few times before. I had just turned a corner when I had noticed that the lights were going out behind me. I continued following the trail, still wary of the darkness that was following me. I broke into a fast jog, and kept turning back to see the lights still going out and catching up on me.

I turned another corner, where I saw the trail of blood end. Every light had gone out, and had been replaced with a blood red color. It was the same as my dream; the one where I was in the hospital and saw that child. I looked up from the end of the bloody streak and up to the ceiling. There I saw all the bodies that were missing. They were all pinned to the wall, impaled by what looked like large, black needles.

I looked back down, and saw the small child. This time, I knew what it was. It was a small, female child, but I still couldn't figure out what species she was. It was as if I knew the word, but when I try to grasp it, it just slips away. The child was wearing a blood red dress that reached way past her feet; like a wedding dress.

The girl looked up at me, showing her cruel features; a hooked nose covered in blood, two black holes for eyes, and a mouth that had dark red teeth, as if she had been drinking blood itself. The girl was screaming again, sending me back into a wall. As she screamed louder, the pressure was getting larger and larger until I couldn't take it anymore. I put all of my force into my left arm, and raised my spike rifle, preparing to fire; and just when I was going to pull the trigger, I had passed out.

My dreams were becoming reality, but no one was paying attention. I didn't know if I was alive or dead. Maybe I was something in between...
