#1 of A Fight for Freedom

A howl echoed through the trees. The horses drawing the buggy nickered and stoped eyes wide in fear, nostrils flaring at an unknown scent. The driver, a human wearing a blue top hat and a matching jacket with tails over a white shirt and pants, whipped the reins trying to get the beasts to move. Some bushes rustled to the buggy's left causing the driver to halt his efforts and peer through the darkness trying to spot what made the noise. A balding man poked his head out a window.

"What's going on? Why arn't we moving?" He shouted at the driver.

"Something has spooked the horses sir." The driver reported not taking his eyes off the bushes.

"Well get them moving!" The man ordered, "if we're late I won't get to show off my prized fighter."

The driver's head suddenly jerked back and he fell to the ground, an arrow sticking out of his eye socket. The balding man's eyes went wide and his shiny head shot back into the buggy.

With katanas drawn four wolves crept from the trees on either side of the buggy, their black armor not making any noise due to padding between plates. A ghostly white form slinked out from the bushes the driver had previously been watching shouldering a bow and drawing it's own blade in it's right hand. The warriors surrounded the only door on the left side of the buggy and one of them grasped the handle then look at the lightly armored white wolf. It nodded at them and they prepared to enter the buggy when the door flew off it's hinges nocking the warriors off their feet.

The white one gasped in surprise as a hulking black male wolf wearing nothing but a loin cloth stood just outside the buggy where the warriors had previously been standing. It growled at them as they regained their footing. The bald man poked his head out the doorway with a big grin on his face, "Kill them Orcus."

The warriors waisted no time in striking at the heavily muscled gladiator. He quickly spun out of the way of the sharp blades grabbing one of the warriors by it's neck and throwing it into the others. Orcus faced the white specter noticing it was female by the way her armor showed her slender figure. She snarled at him and swung her katana horrizontally aiming for his head. He saw it comming and ducked underneath her swing caught the back of her wrist with his left hand twisting it over his head while spinning underneath. She gasped in pain and droper her sword as her arm is forcfully overstreatched. Orcus growled again, grabed her throat with his free hand, and jerked her close to his face. He stared deep into her abysal black eyes, and stoped scenting something familiar. His pure white eyes widened in shock as memories long locked away flodded his mind with images.

A gentle breeze ruslted the field of long grass as two young wolves about nine years old crept silently tword eachother. The black one snickered as he thought he had his longtime friend, Saria a white female wolf with black eyes. She heard him and smiled 'Thank you for telling me how close you are Dante' she thought. They could guess the general direction of eachother by using smell but could not tell exactly where or how far away they were. She lept forward into Dante knocking him on his back and landing on top of him. He gasped in surprise as she held him down.

"I got you again," she teased.

"No," Dante grinned evily, his pure snowy white eyes twinkled, "I got you."

With that he quickly threw his shoulder up knocking Saria off balance. Senceing the change in weight Dante followed though and rolled on top of her effectivly pinning her to the ground. "Hey no fair." She complained still smiling. They laughed together, as Dante rolled off of her. They layed there and watched the clouds slowly pass by overhead when they heard a scream from the village. They both jumped up in fear facing the noise.

"What was that?" Saria asked fear in her eyes.

"It sounded like my mom." Dante said as he started to run through the grass tword the village.

"Dante wait!" Saria cried but he didn't hear her.

The wind shifted and he could smell smoke. "Oh no" He ran faster ignoring the stings from the grass whipping him in the face. He broke the edge of the field and froze. His house was on fire as was most of the village. Three humans grouped around the remains of two black wolves.

"MOM! DAD!" he screamed as anger surged through his body.

The humans turned and laughed as they saw him. He charged.

"Don't kill this one it was some fight in it," the leader said.

"Sure thing boss," said another as he steped forward to catch Dante.

Dante saw the arm and ducked underneath it only to be caught by the third.

"Whoa he's fast," the man said as he struggled to hold onto the squirming wolf cub.

"Look there's another" the leader pointed to Saria who just emerged from the grass.

Dante bit the hand that was covering his face making the man let go.

"Saria run!" he yelled as loud as he could before the man tackled him to the ground.

"Oh no you don't, we can't let our profit escape."

"Get her" the leader ordered the other human.

Saria disapeared back into the field as he ran tword her. The leader turned his attention back to Dante who was still trying to get out from underneath the man that held him down.

"Now now we dont want you hurting yourself" he said as he kicked Dante in the head knocking him out.

Dante woke hours later to the sound of hooves, and shouting. He was in a cage with others from his village children as well as adults. It was being pulled by a team of oxen and guarded by a dozen humans.

"Hey look boss" one of the guards shouted, "the fighter's awake."

The man from his house trotted up beside the cage on a brown horse.

"Guess what little one," he said with a smile as Dante looked up at him, "Your going to fetch a nice price on the slave block."

Dante curled up in a ball and cried. Days later they arrived in a human city, some of the wolves had died on the trip from malnourishment and you could count the rips on all of the survivors. The cage stoped infront of what looked like smaller kennels. Guards opened the door to the cage and roughly sorted the wolves into the kennels one grabed Dante by the tail and he twisted and bit down on the mans hand drawing blood. The human hollered in pain and snatched his hand back. Some of the other men laughed at him as he held his hand.

"Damn it that hurt." he complained.

"Thats the fighter that almost got away from Wilson" one of the others said.

"Really? Wilson?" another asked bewhildered, "he's like the best hunter we have"

"Yeah and it caused another to escape" the man with the hurt hand said as got close to Dante again.

"Be careful"

The man punched Dante in the head and all was black again.

Dante was sold at auction the next day by an older gentleman looking to start in the gladiator arena. For then next ten years he was trained in the art of battle and won many tournaments. Through the years his mind reverted to a more animalistic version of his people. Acting upon instinct alone and forgetting everything but the fight.

A growl brought him back to reality, and he stared hard at the white female in his hands. His grip loosened "S-Saria?"
