Secrets By Lykanos Wulfheart

The pair of romantics walked hand in hand as they started down the trail, the trees offering shade from the evening sun. With the sky clear and the wind at a soft hush, it was the perfect day for a couple's hike down a scenic forest path. The vibrant greens of late spring added to the beauty of the wild flowers that had just recently bloomed.

Though well maintained, the path was nothing more than flat dirt and pressed rocks. It had been a rail line decades ago, but the city had reclaimed the unused section of track and made a walking and biking path out of it. It also happened to be one of Erin's favorite places to take in nature, her hope to share it with the man she loved.

The two looked like your average couple, though bumping shoulders was a little more complicated, Don being a full nine inches taller than his girlfriend of five eight. Still, he managed to use it to his advantage. Every so often, the tall man would move his hand around Erin's shoulder and pull her in close. Leaning down, he'd give his damsel a peck on her tanned cheek, the blushing beauty turning crimson from the affection every time.

As girly as Erin was with her bashful behavior and curly chestnut locks, her outfit was more that of a tomboy. Jeans and a nice green t-shirt were covered by a windbreaker to cut the gentle breeze. Don's outfit was similar, but unlike his girlfriend, he sported glasses. Combined with his short cropped brown hair and lanky build, the man looked like a gentle giant as he moved beside the little lady.

They had been walking for almost half an hour, chatting and grinning along the way, when Erin slowed. Coming upon a little side path, she tugged at Don's sleeve. "There's a lovely little trail over here that skirts the stream." Her voice was full of cheer as she smiled up at him. "Would you like to check it out? I promise it's worth it."

Leaning over to kiss her curls, Don's voice was just as sweet with his response. "Lead the way, my little fox." The woman's adorable chirp of approval brightened his face as he followed her down the narrow walkway.

After a half mile of skirting the tiny river, the pair was stopped as Erin moved to the water's edge. "Aren't the woods beautiful! I could almost live out here... Couldn't you?"

The man's amusement worked its way into his voice. "I could, but I'm pretty sure you'd miss your cell phone."

"Good point," she shot back as she took his arm and led him forward. "Still, nature has a peace to it that I could never escape."

"Does this have anything to do with your love of foxes," he teased, wiggling her with his clenched arm. "I swear that if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were one. All that spunk and energy. That love of nature. And especially all those cute little noises you make." Having been called out, Erin couldn't help but make a soft mewing sound as she shyly looked down. With a victorious grin, he added, "See? Cute."

His girlfriend ground to a halt, her mood changing from perky and pleased to something a bit more brooding. Stepping around, he leaned in to put his forehead to hers. "Hey, what's wrong? I was only teasing."

Hesitation stilled her words. It took a moment for her to even open her eyes, the gaze low and sorrowful. "Don... I should tell you something. It's something I've only told a few people."

"Hey," he soothed as he stroked her jawline. "Whatever it is, you can tell me."

"But," tears welled up as the thought entered her mind. As she said them, her voice trembled with the fear. "You may not love me if you know the truth."

In a whisper, he replied, "Shush, shush, shush. You know that's not true. I'd love you no matter what. There's little you could say that would shock me."

Stepping away towards the trees, she turned, the droplets streaming down her face. "Please, forgive me." Her clothes started to glow with gentle light, much like that of a candle. Slowly, the flame started to move, consuming her body. As the brilliance faded, the changes washed over her. Exposed skin pricked with fur, white at the chest with orange stretching to her limbs. Black patches overtook her fingers and toes, the digits growing thick as pads grew in, a dull black against the darker fluff.

Erin continued to weep as her nose stretched forward, the stream staining the white that grew on her dainty muzzle. As the tip of her nose grew black so too did her ears, the stretching flesh migrating up the sides of her head. The eyes, initially brown, became a mystical green with a black slit for the pupil. With Erin's head on its way to finishing the change from human to fox, her body proportions began to alter. Keeping her mass, the joints rotated down. Her arms and legs grew thinner, frailer than they started. The bones in her palms and foot bottoms stretched into place as her posture became canine. As her shape locked in, her body the size of a large dog yet completely vulpine, a bright flash appeared behind her. In an instant, nine black-tipped fox tails came into view, the blinding light fading with their appearance. The whole transformation had been elegant and fluid, no pain, no discomfort. It was a thing of beauty, much like the woman before.

The creature sat, still unwilling to look at her partner from the shame of the deception. "I'm so sorry. I should have told you that I was a kitsune from the start. I... I... I'd understand if you never want to see me again after this."

Fingers moved through the fur behind her pointy ears, the pressure a delightful scratch. In a muted hush, he comforted her. "You're still beautiful to me." Moving his palm along her cheek and pulling it back below her muzzle, he smiled at the large fox. "I have something to show you, too."

Taking a few steps back Don's clothing turned to fur, a bushy blue growing out of his chest with white overtaking his arms. Two white horns burst forth from his skull as his ears pointed, orange-spotted blue fluff overtaking them. As the ivory finished growing, two golden bands wrapped around the base near his hair, the short brown flowing into a thick, black mane.

As the fur made its way to his wrists and ankles, it took on a spotty appearance, deep and arctic blues poking over the whites. Slowly, the flesh of his pinky merged into his ring finger as his toes followed suit. Once left with eight digits instead of ten, blue claws pushed forth, sharp and predatory. His feet started to pop as the joints thickened, his heels rising into the air. In his face, a wide snout replaced his nose. As it moved forward, his appearance lost its humanity as he took on the guise a furred dragon.

Grunting at the pressure, the beast dropped to his hands and knees, his spine stretching into a furry tail, almost the same length of his whole body. Clawing into the dirt, the pain seemed to grow, nubs shooting from his back. As the flesh unfurled, wings took its place. Blue and leathery on the inside, the backs were white with fluff, a tiny spine of bone erupting from the bend like a finger. As the changes slowed to completion, swirls of sky blue wrapped in on his shoulders and hips, a dot forming in the center. Long hairs sprouted at the tip of his tail, white into blue as black tufts ended at his jawline.

Though he was on his hands and knees, he still seemed to have a humanoid form, albeit draconic in nature. Looking up at his lover who was down on all fours, he felt it best to join in the fun. Another groan was masked with a sickening crunch as his shoulders and hips popped into a new shape, the bones changing their size to support his weight in the new stance. His neck grew thick as it stretched to better suit his form, that of a fluffy European dragon.

Now twice her size, the monster loomed over the large canine. Moving his muzzle in close, he nuzzled it up against her nose in a sign of affection. "I'll accept you if you'll accept me. After all, you're not the only one with secrets."

Licking in the wide space between his nostrils, Erin giggled. "You're a freaking dragon! That's awesome! And here I thought I was going to shock you."

In a deep chuckle of his own, he spoke as he rested his jaw on her head. "We magical creatures have to stick together." Flapping his wings, he rested them back in place as he turned down the trail. "So, shall we walk as we are, forces of nature?"

Beaming, the kitsune chirped. "I'd like that. I'd like it a lot." Padding off into the woods, the two leaned in close, tails swishing with glee. In a gesture of his love, the dragon's long tail wrapped around the nine of the fox. With a gentle squeeze, he showed her that he was there for her... that secrets would never keep them apart.
