Chapter 2: When It Rains, It Pours

A newly created relationship drifted down upon a Lab/Husky, Shawn, and his boyfriend Jason, a gray wolf. Jason had just moved to Willow Brook to finish out his senior year of school when he met Shawn. Getting to know each other they became good friends and nothing more until one fateful rainy day. After Jason had walked Shawn home, Shawn was assaulted by his adopted father and almost died if not for making his way to Jason's in the pouring rain by a vague description he had received earlier that day. Due to the quick acting of Jason's mother, Shawn pulled through the night and spent the next day in the care of Jason which is when they confessed their feelings about each other.

*****

The doorbell chimed in around quarter after five and Jason clicked the TV off and went over and opened up the door. Standing there was a six foot tall grizzle bear in a silly red and green striped at that displayed the Dukes Pizza logo.

"Hey there Ben, how much do I owe ya?" Jason greeted the bear stepping aside to let him in.

"Thanks, its kinda chilly out today. Lets see..." quickly punching in a couple things on his hand held device, "that will be ten forty-seven per large, and of course the free bread sticks for our favorite customer," he said with a cheesy smile across his face as he handed the boxes to Jason. "comes to a total of twenty-two sixty-three."

"Ok one sec gonna go grab the money." Jason said taking the boxes into the kitchen, leaving the bear at the door.

Shawn hearing the doorbell after he had finished in the shower was quick to dry off being careful around his laceration and having no clothing still, he wrapped the towel around his waste and headed downstairs. When he made it about halfway down the stairs he looked up to see a bear standing by the open door. Slightly embarrassed he tried to make his way back upstairs but the moment lifted his foot up, it got caught on the lip of the stair and he stumbled backward landing on his rump with a thud on the stairs.

Rubbing his backside he looked up to see the bear now looking at him, eyes wide. Shawn's face turned a to shades of red as the bear looked him over. Staring at each other for a moment, the bear spoke first

"Nice uh... battle wound you got there." Ben said before cracking a slight grin.

Shawn still in a state of embarrassment, just nodded his head.

"I don't think we have met yet, I'm Bernard, but people just call me Ben. My dad owns the pizza shop on Renview drive." Ben said as he to a couple steps toward Shawn before extending his hand out toward him.

Taking his hand, Shawn was pulled forward onto his feet and then shook hands as Jason walked into the room with money in hand.

"I see you've met Shawn," he said as his face beamed with glee, both heads turning to see Jason

"I.. ah... heard the door and though pizza was here," Shawn said retrieving his hand before scratching behind his head.

"Ooh I see whats going on here," Ben said, giving a wink at Jason.

Jason handed the money over to Ben, "Keep the change."

Ben gave Jason a bear hug before putting him back down gently on the floor, "Thanks bro. Ill catch you next time when your not so..." looking over to Shawn, "busy. Say hi to your mom for me." Turning and walking out the door he waved his big paw over his shoulder bidding goodbye as he hopped back into his car and started it up.

Jason closed the door and turned to Shawn seeing the sheepish yet confused look on his face. "Come, pizzas in the kitchen, ill explain." chuckling at Shawn as they moved into the kitchen.

"Ben's family have been good to us, they helped us out when dad died. He became like a brother to me, helped me through some tough times," reaching down, Jason opened a box and grabbed a couple slices of pizza and putting them on a plate before turning to the fridge. "We have coke or orange pop, milk and water."

"No, I'm fine. What happened to your dad?" Shawn said as they headed back into the front room, him cuddling up next to Jason on the couch.

"He was on his way home from work when some crazy person at the wheel of a stolen semi, ran a red light and crushed his car, he made it to the hospital and only after arriving in the operation did my mom find out who it was. They said the woman driving was just released from a murder case and she died in the crash. My moms the head surgeon and was offered a job out here so we moved out here, partially because of the job, but also to get away from the memories," Jason said trailing off lost in though.

Sitting his empty plate on the table, Shawn cuddled in closer, lifting Jason's arm and wrapping it around him. Jason still seemed lost in though but held Shawn close, resisting the urge to tear up.

Shawn close his eyes, listening to the heartbeat drum under his ear. "I wish I had met you back when we were living in the city," he said giving a lick across the underside of Jason's muzzle, bringing him back to reality, "None of my extended family wanted to take me after the incident, and I was sent off to my foster home."

Jason held the pup close, closing his eyes and resting his head between Shawn's ears, "If we had met back then, do you think we would be here together like this today?"

They sat on the couch for then next hour, their presence being enough to keep each other content. The sound of the door unlocking made Jason turn his head, he looked at the clock, ten thirteen. The door opened up and Katrina walked in followed by a Sheppard in a blue uniform. Katrina closed the door and ushered him into the front room.

"Hey, how you holding up son?" the Sheppard said before sitting down in a chair across from Shawn and Jason, much like that night four years ago.

"I'm feeling better then I was when I was living at home..." Shawn said lifting his head to recognize the Sheppard, "How you holding up?"

"Hey I'm supposed to be the one asking the questions here." The four of them had a good chuckle as the mood of the room came back to a casual state. Katrina walked over and rubbed her hand on Jason's head to get his attention and motioned to the kitchen. Getting up to follow, Jason was stopped when his paw was grabbed, looking back he saw Shawn's pleading eyes begging him not to leave.

"I'll be back in a couple minutes, if you need me I'm just in the other room," Jason said as his paw was let go and he followed his mom into the kitchen.

Shawn pulled his knees up to his chest as he was left alone on the couch. "Do you think you could tell me what happened yesterday?" The Sheppard pulling out a tape recorder, pen and pad of paper.

Shawn nodded and the Sheppard picked up the tape recorder, pushing the record button, "This is constable Mike Terrif, the date is Tuesday the twenty-second, two-thousand-nine. I'm here with Shawn Iszack. Shawn, can you tell me about the turn of events that happened on the twenty-first? Starting back before you got injured."

Shawn recounted the events as Jason and Katrina waited in the kitchen, listening. The Sheppard wrote a few things down and asked a few more questions before clicking off the recorder and placing it back in his vest. Katrina couldn't believe what she was hearing, hugging her son close to her.

"You may come back in if you like, Mrs. Carter," the Sheppard's voice drifting in from the front room, Katrina and Jason went back in. "I have to grab my camera, I'll be back in a moment"

Mike returned with his camera to find Jason with his arm around Shawn and Katrina with her arms around both of them. "I need to get a couple of pictures if you don't mind and the I'll get out of your fur."

After snapping a few pictures, Mike put his hat back on and moved toward the door. "I'll see what I can do, hopefully we can put this guy away for good." he said turning a smile back over his shoulder as he reached for the door handle before pausing, "We got married, and had a baby boy... I look at him and he reminds me of you."

Shawn let go of Jason's pawn and walked over, touching his paw to the Sheppard's back, "Thank you," he said before giving the Sheppard a hug.

Mike waved from his squad car as he pulled out of the driveway, Shawn and Jason waving from the door. Closing the door they turned around and Shawn was instantly met by a warm embrace from Katrina, "Oh you poor thing, I was listening from the kitchen. You can stay here however long you like."

"MOM, mom whoa, I think your killing him again." Jason said trying not to laugh at Shawn's face as it was mushed up against Katrina's bosom. Katrina let go of her strangle hold but still had her hands on his shoulders keeping him at arms length as she wiped a tear from her eye. "You'll always have a place here with us."

"Jason, would you mind taking your boyfriend upstairs and finding some clothes for him? He cant go around in a towel for the rest of his life," she said as she shooed them upstairs, "I'm gonna be heading to bed as soon as I steal some of your pizza, I'll leave sleeping arrangements up to you."

Jason lead Shawn into his room, Shawn's eyes scanning the room. It was quite big inside, on the left side was a queen sized bed, navy blue sheets and a burgundy down blanket. Beside that was a table with the usual lamp and alarm clock. On the wall across from them was a bay window with some sketchpads scattered across the seating. And what room wouldn't be complete without a TV, a 32" flat screen on the left wall, some consoles, games and movies lining the shelving unit below. Beside that on the same wall, was a closet.

Shawn's eyes drifted along the walls lined with various sketches. "Wow, I didn't know you were an artist?"

The wolf just smiled as he petered over to his closet opening the doors and walking in. "So how long you been drawing? Your pretty good."

Jason voice coming from out of the closet, "Hmmm... probably about six or seven years now I guess." Moments later Jason reappear with a box labeled "Old Clothes". "Here, you can take a look through these, they are from a couple summers ago before I grew a foot over the holiday," setting the box down near to where Shawn was standing.

Shawn on the other hand was examining one of the drawings more closely. "So when did you draw this one?" he said looking over to the wolf who was now sitting by the box. Jason leaned over to get a better look at the drawing before realizing what one it was.

Blushing slightly before resting back on his hands, "That one, I drew the day after I met you."

Shawn left the drawing and saw down next to the wolf and gave him a playful lick across his cheek. "You know for drawing nude pictures of me after we first met, I'm beginning to wonder who all these other drawing are of."

Opening up the box revealed a bunch of clothes that were tightly packed in as they rose from the box now being free. They separated the piles into shirts and pant, and other different articles of clothing. After that Shawn picked up a couple things and went to try them on, stopping to look over at Jason only for him to giggle.

Shawn dropped his towel and started to dress. Putting on the pants and carefully pulled a shirt down over his head, the shirt fit nicely but as for the pants they were a bit big and kept threatening to fall down around his ankles.

Looking up to Jason as he tried to hold the pants up, Jason turned back to a pile digging through before finding a belt and tossing it to Shawn, "Not that I care if you have pants on or not but this might work."

"Ha ha, very funny, I'm sure you would," Shawn said putting the belt through the loops in the pants before securing it in the front. "There, what do you think?" putting his arms out and doing a little spin showing off his clothes.

"Tsk, silly pup you forgot something," Jason said getting up giving a twirling motion with his hand, "Turn around a sec." reaching down he did up the tale snap on the back of the pants.

Shawn yipped, startled by the snap but was soon comforted when Jason wrapped his arms around him.

Katrina resting on the open door frame, "Well don't you look cute," she said holding a cup of tea, both Jason and Shawn jumping at the sound of her voice. "I have the day off tomorrow but you guys don't, so get some sleep tonight. I'll give you a ride in tomorrow."

"Thanks Mrs. Carter..." Shawn started to say before he was cut off.

"Na uh, please, I told you to call me Karry," she piped up and took a sip of tea.

Jason laughing as he nuzzled the top of Shawn's head. "You might even get off calling her mom."

Shawn's smile slightly fading as his gaze fell to the floor. Jason's laugh turned to a look of concern as he hugged Shawn closer, "I'm sorry I didn't mean to..."

Jason looked up to his mom's confused expression, "His parents were both lawyers and their case subject turned on them and killed them both." Shawn wincing as memories flashed through his head of that day.

Katrina's expression changed to resemble someone deep in thought, her eyes then opening wide as she dropped her cup of tea.

Jason turned a look of surprise, "Mom? Are you ok?" Shawn also raising his head to look into her eyes.

"You... I thought your last name sounded familiar... you have your mothers eyes, did you know that?" Katrina's eyes looking deep into Shawn's.

Shawn stood there in disbelief, she knew his mom? When? How? His head started to swarm with questions when Katrina looked up to Jason, "That was the same night that your father died..." Looking back to Shawn, her eyes now filled with tears, "I'll never forget that night, your mother came in just before my him. She asked me to pass on a message but I never thought I would meet you in person, so I passed it onto the police."

Putting a hand up to her nose before wiping the tears from her eyes, "She wanted you to know that they loved you with all their hearts, and that they were sorry that they wouldn't be able to make it home this time."

Shawn fell to his knees distraught in emotions, both Jason and Katrina rushing to him as he started to sob into Jason fur.

The emotional moment passed, Katrina had gotten up and gone to bed after Shawn had fallen asleep in Jason's arms. Lifting him up and carrying him over to the bed, he undid Shawn's belt and took off his pants, then carefully removed his shirt before pulling the blankets up over him. Kissing his forehead before getting himself ready for bed and crawling in beside him.

Shawn opened his eyes expecting to see his unfinished, cold, dark room but instead was laying on something comfortable and was wrapped with warm blankets. Finding it was in fact real and not just a dream, he smiled to himself and tried to move to sit up finding little success when he was stopped by the arm laying across his body. Shifting and rolling onto his side, he touched his nose to Jason's.

Jason stirred a little before opening his eyes slightly, "Good morning there sweetie," he said licking Shawn on the nose before stretching out and arcing his back lifting his rump into the air, still resting on his muzzle and knees, his arms stretched out in front.

Shawn giggled before sitting up and playfully tipping Jason over, Jason falling over and rolling out of bed onto the floor with a thud. Shawn's ears lowered to his head as he leaned across the bed looking over the side.

"You ok? I didn't mean to..." Shawn was saying before he was silenced by the wolf with a kiss, parting maws, tongues slipping into each others maws as the massage each other.

There was a knock on the door startling the two as their kiss broke and their attention sprang to the door. "Are you two decent?" It was Katrina, she was probably ready to go and they had just woken up.

Jason stood up and looked around, "Ummmmm....."

"I'll take that as a no... anyways, I wanna see you two downstairs and ready in about a half hour, we need to stop by the school early and talk to the principal before classes," she said before making her way downstairs

Footsteps were heard on the stairs, the two turned to each other and laughed, Jason dropped down on the side of the bed, sitting beside the pup. Shawn rolled over and looked up into his angels eyes.

"So... guess we should get ready, huh?" Jason said dropping a shirt over Shawn's face, Shawn removing it and giving a playful glower as he watched Jason get up off the bed. Admiring Jason's furry butt as his tail wagged back and forth while he walked into his closet.

Shawn sat up, working his arms through the shirt and popping his head out the top the get blindsided by a pair of pants as they wrapped around his head.

"Thanks..."

Jason grinned before working his feet into his own pants, "Not a problem." Stepping in front of the body length mirror in the closet Jason ran his paws through his fur roughing it up a bit before brushing it back wit a paw. Then fiddling with a piece of fur that didn't want to go into place, Shawn wandered over leaning against the wall as he watched Jason trying to fix it.

Sighing as he watched Jason, Shawn licked his paw and combed the piece of fir back into place. Jason just stuck his tongue out at Shawn's reflection in the mirror.

They headed downstairs and met up with his mom in the kitchen who had set out some cereal and bowls for the two, herself sitting at the table reading the newspaper. She peered over the edge of the bent paper as the two came in, "Hurry up you too, five minutes until we are outa here."

The boys finished their breakfast and Katrina her tea and they headed out the door and got into the small blue car. Watching the two climb into the back, she smiled to herself as the buckled up her belt.

The car pulled out of the driveway and down the street, turning the corner Shawn cuddled down into Jason's shirt as if he was hiding. Jason at first was puzzled, but looking out the window he saw Shawn's house. Putting an arm around his pup he gently rubbed Shawn's back trying to comfort him the best he could.

It wasn't long before they reached the school and the three got out of the car. Not many students were there yet, they tend to all rush in ten minutes before class. The secretary told them to take a seat and the principal would be with them shortly, sure enough within a couple minutes, a six foot Siberian tiger stepped out and greeted them.

"Hello, my name is Gregory," he said offering his hand to Katrina, "and this must be your son and his friend, the one you told me about on the phone?"

Taking his hand, "Yes, this is Shawn."

"Please, step into my office," he said as he turned and opened the door beside him, letting the other in before following suit. Sitting at his desk he folded his hands together and rested his chin on top.

"Unfortunately there isn't much we, as a school, can do about these types of situations. What I can offer though is if you need someone to talk to, my door is always open."

Shawn nodded, he would rather leave the office, he felt weird sitting in there, almost as if he was being incriminated for something. Katrina put a hand on Shawn's shoulder then turned her head toward the tiger, "He will be staying with us for the time being so if you need to contact anyone you can phone me."

Shawn smiled and looked over to Jason who was busy staring off into space. The tiger stood up and shook Katrina's hand, "Well thanks for coming in, I'll be sure to let you know if there is any problems."

The left the office, Katrina kissed both on the forehead before parting to head back home. They walked to long way to their lockers to kill time, the hallway looped around in a circle so eventually they would end up at their destination.

Music drifted down the hallway, caught by Shawn's ears he stopped. Jason also stopped after he noticed Shawn, "Hey whats up hun?"

"Huh? Oh, its nothing. I'll meet you at the locker in a minute I have to go check something." Shawn said before ducking down a hallway.

Jason stood there puzzled before heading off to his locker.

Shawn continued down the hallway in search of the music playing, as he came closer the sound grew stronger and the notes carried more meaning as the formed a beautiful song. Never being much of a musical type, Shawn peered in a door to see an otter sitting at a piano, his hands floating up and down the ivory keys.

The otter took no notice on the prying eyes as he continued to play the song out. After keying the final note he rested his hand there waiting for the sound to die out when he was interrupted by the sound of the door creaking open. Turning to look he saw no one there but decided to gather up his music and close the piano.

Shawn had ducked around the corner after bumping the door with his head and it swinging open, letting out a creak as the hinges slid across each other. Trying not to be noticed he hurried down the hall quietly as he headed to his locker.

Jason was there waiting, "Did you find what you were looking for?" he asked curiously tilting his head to the side.

"Yea, I guess..." he said fiddling with the dial on his lock.

Jason, still confused, "You guess huh?"

"Yup!" Shawn said poking his head back out of his locker and closing it up.

Jason leaned down an kissed his pup, no one was around yet... or so they thought. A pair of eyes was watching through a window in the door across the hall.

Class went as usual, Shawn and Jason met up for lunch, instead of going to the cafeteria they decided to go outside, the sun was warm on their fur as they stepped outside. They sat down at a table that had been made in metal shop and several of them fastened to cement blocks in the ground around different places surrounding the school.

The music Shawn had heard earlier that morning once again drifted through his ears. Shawn rested his head on his hands and closed his eyes. Jason on the other hand had started eating and was nearly half done his lunch before he noticed that Shawn hadn't touched his.

"Something wrong?" he said.

Shawn opened his eyes and smiled, "Nope, everything is perfect." with that he started to eat. Jason finished and was waiting so Shawn offered him the rest of his meal.

Standing up, Shawn picked up the empty trays, "I'm gonna return these to the cafe, I'll meet you in class, would you mind taking my bag with you?" Jason nodded and Shawn licked the Jason's nose before heading off back into the school.

Ditching the trays on the cart near the cafe he bounded back down the hall weaving between the busy groups of people hanging out in the hallway before making it to the music wing. When he got to the hallway it was nearly empty sparing the few people who walked through to use the doors on the other end.

Placing his paw on a door handle he pushed the handle down slowly and opened the door a crack. Sure enough the otter was again sitting at the piano. Keying a few notes he moved his hands around searching for the right sounds. As he found them he took the pen from his mouth and scribbled on the paper beside him.

The otter stretched his arms up then forward, placing the couple papers on the piano stand, he began to play. The notes filled the room and flowed out into the hallway. Shawn quickly looked around before quietly stepping into the room, closing the door behind him and leaned against the wall.

Shawn started humming to the song to himself, it was familiar to him, but as he lost himself in the music, he didn't notice that the piano stopped and the otter was now staring at him.

Shawn blushed and lowered his ears, "Uhhh... S.. sorry... I'll go," he said turn to leave but was stopped when the otter spoke out.

"You seem to know the song pretty well, I'm suppressed you could pick up the tune. I've only written a small portion of my piano rendition," he said with smile.

"It sounded beautiful, Don't You Cry â€" by Kamelot, right?" Shawn said taking a few steps away from the door.

The otter motion to him to come sit beside him, "Come, if you would like you can help me out?"

Slowly moving closer he sat on the edge of the piano bench. The otter stuck out his hand, "My names Collin."

"I'm Shawn," he said taking the otters paw. "So... I don't know if I can help much, I don't have any musical talents or anything," he said looking at the piano.

Collin shook his head, "No talent? Pish posh, you just haven't tried yet. Here copy what I do." the otter pulled out some papers from his bag and put them up on the piano stand. The words "Comptine D'Un Autre Ete L'Apres Midi" printed atop the page. Taking Shawn's hand he placed it on the keys, "So you play these three..." as he went on to play the song he explained each key to Shawn about its relation to the piano and the sheet music.

After showing him the notes, he keyed Shawn to start playing, as Shawn was playing one hand Collin joined in as the second hand.

They finished the song and Shawn was grinning from ear to ear, Collin smiled, "See? Your a natural."

The bell rang. "Sorry for interrupting your song," Shawn said scratching his head.

"Not a problem. It always makes me happy to see others discover new talent," Collin said sweeping up the papers in his hand and tucking them back in his bag.

Hardly able to contain himself he gave Collin a hug before heading out of the room. Collin stood there, frozen. "Did he just... hug me?"

Shawn went down the hall and turned the corner, to running into a Bulldog on the football team. His glasses falling from his muzzle and landing by the Bulldogs feet. The Bulldog grinned as he raised his foot, only to lower it again with a satisfying crunch.

The second bell rang and Shawn knelt down to pick up the broken pieces of his glasses, "Sorry Brad..." he said as he tucked the pieces into his pocket. Brad just laughed and grabbed the pups ear, pulling him to his feet, "Don't do it again then." With that he shoved Shawn to the floor and left.

Sighing, Shawn got up and rushed off the opposite direction from Brad, ducking into his class he made his way to the back and sat down beside Jason.

"Where were you? You had me worried." Jason whispered as class started.

"Sorry I got sidetracked..."

"Your not wearing your glasses?"

"Yeah thanks to Brad..." he pulled out the broken pieces from his pocket and sat them in front of Jason, "sometimes I wish people like that didn't exist..."

"Just think though. A jerk like that brought us together." Jason said placing his hand on top of Shawn's

Shawn smiled and placed his other hand over Jason's, "You always know how to make me feel better... but I don't know how I'm gonna do anything without my glasses I'm practically blind without them."

Jason chuckled slightly only to be caught by Mr. Stanley, "And what do you find so funny about transferring hard drives between computers Mr. Carter?

Jason put on a funny grin as he wittingly came up with a reply, "Something about putting the male jack into the female port if I'm not mistaken?" The entire class started to laugh including the teacher.

"Ok funny man, I'll see you after class." Mr. Stanley said over the laughter of the class as Jason sunk in his chair.

"Aw man..." he said as the class got under way again. "I guess ill meet you after detention," he said rolling his eyes.

Shawn nodded and they agreed to meet up at the back of the school where there was a path that lead down toward Jason's house.

The bell tolled and Shawn headed to the spot where he agreed to meet up, making a slight detour he stopped at a door about halfway down the hall and cracked it open. To his delight he saw the very same otter sitting at the piano.

Walking into the room he went to greet the otter but noticed that he didn't seem to be as cheery as when they last met. "Hey Collin? You ok?" he said nearing the bench and sitting down beside him.

Raising a hand to his cheek Collin rubbed his eye, "Sorry, yea, I was just thinking that's all."

Shawn tried to comfort him. Reaching out he placed his hand on the otters shoulder, "If you need someone to talk to, I here if you need me."

"Thanks," he said before looking up, seeing Shawn's face his eyes welled up and tears started to stream down his face. "I'm sorry, I don't know whats come over me..."

Shawn reached out wrapping his arms around Collin, hugging him as the otter sobbed into his shoulder. After a minute, he calmed down and leaned back from Shawn. He brushed the few strands of hair from his face before wiping his cheeks again.

"Its ok if you don't want to talk, but it might help you get things off you chest." Shawn said as he straightened his shirt.

Clearing is thought, Collin pondered the thought of telling Shawn what was really on his mind. "You look ... just, without your glasses... you look... just like him..."

"Who?"

"My boyfriend... he's uhhh... not here anymore..."

Shawn's ears dropped, "Oh uh sorry. I didn't know..."

"No no its ok, I just got to thinking about him after you hugged me this morning, and then seeing you without your glasses... you remind me so much of him." Collin said as he turned slightly in his seat to face Shawn.

Shawn was a little unsure what to say so he just sat there. He looked down at his watch, "Oh shoot... not that I want to get going but I need to get going or I'm gonna be late to meet someone."

Collin smiled the same smile as before when they first met, "Its ok, thanks for being here."

Getting up, Shawn headed out the door waving as he left and then sprinted down the hall. "Ah good hes not here yet," he said to himself as he reached to doors.

"Hey dweeb."

Turning around a large figure was standing there. By the broad shoulders and sound of his voice Shawn recognized who it was... Brad.
