#1 of A funny thing happened in class today

It was an unusually cold September morning at Stockman State University. David Carranders was sitting in his Criminal Law class listening to the teacher talk about some famous case or something; he wasn't really paying attention. David is a beagle who is about 6 feet tall and weighs 180 pounds. He wasn't really athletic, but he did hit the gym a few times a week. He was wearing his usual getup: slightly baggy jeans, Stallions (local baseball team) replica jersey bearing the name and number of his favorite player (Brace McDonnells, # 23), whatever band t-shirt he decided to grab before leaving his house, and his most cherished possession: a locket bearing the picture of his brother who was killed 2 years ago when a drunk driver ran a red light while trying to evade police. His brother, named Richard, wasn't killed on impact but died 3 days later due to complications from his injuries.

He was very close to his brother, who was also the only person who knew Dave's biggest secret: he was gay. Dave's parents didn't hate gays, so there was no reason for him not to tell. He was just scared that they would react differently because he was their son. Dave didn't really have friends growing up, just people he knew at school. They never stayed in touch since they all moved to go to different schools in different states. After his class got done, he was left with an hour break before his next class. So he decided to go to the cafeteria to get some food since he forgot breakfast this morning.

Meanwhile, just arriving on campus was a nervous-looking Kodiak bear named Julius Winston. He was about 6 foot 7 and weighed close to 300 pounds. He was wearing baggy beige cargo pants, a solid red pocket t-shirt, and a grey zipper hooodie. He was looking at his schedule through his glasses to see when and where his first class was. He arrived at his English composition class 10 minutes early and sat down at a desk. While waiting for everyone to enter, he decided to look at the other students to get an idea of who else was taking this class. While looking around, he saw a beagle enter the room and for some reason he couldn't really take his eyes off the dog.

As Dave was entering the class, he noticed a bear sitting in one of the corner seats looking at him. Thinking it was kinda weird, he sat at a different desk and decided to ignore it. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't ignore the feeling that he was being watched. He looked around and when he looked at the bear, he swore he saw the bear blush and quickly look away as if embarrassed. Dave noticed this was going on all during class and was starting to get kinda creeped out about it.

Despite his best efforts, Julius just couldn't stop staring at the beagle. He didn't know what it was. He was exactly gay or straight, or even bisexual, but something about this dog just captured his attention. ‘Oh, crap! He's looking!' Julius thought as the beagle looked at him. Quickly turning away he tried his hardest not to blush, but he was certain that the dog could notice. ‘Damn it! Why do I keep looking at him! What is wrong with me?' As hard as he tried, Julius just couldn't stop from staring. ‘That's it! I gotta find some way outta here so I can stop staring!'

As soon as class was over Dave noticed the bear make a beeline for the door. ‘Maybe he was embarrassed to be checking me out? Oh, well. I'll just see him on Wednesday.' Dave packed up his stuff and headed off to his next class, Anatomy and Physiology. As he entered the room, he saw the same bear from the last class sitting on the opposite side of the room. ‘Oh great! Now I gotta sit ANOTHER class with him staring at me?' Dave quickly sat down directly across from the bear and decided to stare right back. ‘Fight fire with fire, right?'

The bear sat in his next room, Anatomy and Physiology while waiting for the rest of the class to arrive. While looking at the door, he was shocked to see the same beagle he was staring at for the last 2 hours walk into the room. ‘Oh my god! What the hell's he doing here? Did he follow me? No, that's stupid. He must have this class too. I'll just try like hell to not look at him at all.' He quickly turned his attention to his notebook, getting ready to take notes. The teacher soon walked in and started going over the syllabus for the class and soon after started going over the class material. During the class, however, Julius got the feeling he was being watched. Looking up, he noticed the beagle looking right at him. His stare never wavering, never looking away, not even blushing from embarrassment. ‘Oh god! He knows I was looking at him! What do I do? What do I do? I know! I'll just smile at him! That should do something!'

While looking at the bear, he noticed the bear just randomly smile at him. ‘Why the hell's he smiling?' So, confronted with this expression, he decided to give a confused one back, just to see what would happen. ‘That oughtta show him!' As soon as he did this, class was over, and he decided he would confront this bear about the bizarre goings on of the last 4 hours. So he got up and waited outside the room for the bear to show up.

After class ended, Julius got up and left the room only to be caught by the beagle outside the room.

"So, was there any particular reason you were staring at me in English?" David asked.

Realizing there was no way out of this situation, Julius decided to tell the truth. "To be honest, no. There was no reason. I don't know why, but as soon as I saw you enter, there was just something about you that made it impossible to stop staring. I'm sorry for creeping you out." The beagle just gave him a "what the hell are you talking about" look. So Julius tried a diplomatic approach. "Maybe we got off on the wrong foot. My name is Julius. I would like to talk to you and maybe get to know you better, and hopefully become friends. If you don't want to, I totally understand. But at least let me buy you lunch. It's the least I could do for making you feel uncomfortable." He extended a hand to the beagle hoping to ease the tension between them.

Dave looked at the paw extended to him and hesitantly shook it. "My name's David, or Dave if you prefer. And lunch sounds just fine. I don't have another class for a few hours so that works for me. Where do you wanna go?"

Julius was a little happy when Dave shook his hand. "How about we go to Gino's and get some pizza? And by the way, feel free to call me Jules."

"Gino's sounds awesome. I love their pizza. I go there almost every Friday. Shall we take your car or mine?" Dave could tell Jules was a little excited when they shook hands. ‘Maybe he's interested in me?'

They decided to go in Dave's car since Jules' wasn't that big. It was a 1996 Mazda Miata, a two-seater, but with his big bear frame, it would've been cramped. Dave drove a 2003 Ford Mustang, a present from his parents for graduating high school. They got to the restaurant and ordered their food: Dave, a slice of four-cheese pizza and a Sprite. Jules, three slices of pepperoni and iced tea. They sat and talked for a while, found out they liked a lot of the same bands, like a lot of the same shows and movies, read a lot of the same books. Eventually the discussion turned towards their families.

"So, Dave, what's your family like?" Jules asked.

"There's not really much to say. My dad works all the time doing something that he says he can't tell us what. My mom used to be one of the best neurosurgeon in the state until a bogus lawsuit pretty much killed any esteem she may have had. Now she just mopes around all day. Sometimes she doesn't get out of bed until like 1 or 2 in the afternoon," Dave explained.

"Wow. When did the lawsuit happen?" Jules asked.

"It was about 3 years ago," Dave answered.

"Oh. I hope she feels better soon," Jules said.

"Me too. But the worst thing that has happened to our family was two years ago when my older brother was killed by a drunk driver who ran a red light ‘cuz he didn't want to get a ticket. They were both killed on impact. Go figure." Dave opened the locket around his neck and showed Jules the picture of his brother. "This is him. His name was Richard. He would have been 24 on Saturday. Which is also when he was killed. He was on his way to a restaurant to meet his girlfriend for his birthday when he was hit. When that happened, my mom really just fell apart. She became horribly depressed, often talked about killing herself so ‘she wouldn't have to live in a world that was full of so much pain.' Her words. My brother is one of only two people who know that I'm gay. For some reason, I just can't bring myself to tell my parents that I'm gay. I dunno, maybe it's that if I tell my mom, it'll just push her over the edge and she'll do something that'll really hurt someone."

"You said ‘one of two.' Who's the other?" Jules asked.

Dave just looked at him for a minute until he said, "You. So, tell me about your family."

Jules thought for a couple minutes before answering, "I never really knew my family. I was two when a psycho killed my parents. He raped his victims before he killed them. Timing the actual death to when he would climax. Or so the investigators told me. I was then raised by an uncle who was later arrested for selling drugs out of his house."

"What kind of drugs?" Dave asked.

"All kinds: meth, pot, coke, heroin. You name it, he probably sold it. I then went to live with an aunt that was shocked by all that happened to me in just 6 years of being alive. She did her best to take care of me, but with 4 other kids all older than me, it was hard. Harder after her husband died during a bank robbery. She tried collecting on the life insurance from her husband, but the investigators screwed up and ruled his death an accident despite overwhelming evidence against. The lawsuit from that is still pending. She decided to home school me since it would have been more expensive to send me to school ‘cuz the only schools nearby were pretty expensive private schools that her children managed to get scholarships to. So, when I turned 18 I decided to apply for a scholarship here and luckily got in."

"Wow. I guess you life was more screwed up than mine. But at least were both okay now. Well, I guess I should get us back to campus, huh?" Dave said.

"Yeah. I kinda need to get my car and get back to my apartment."

So they both left the restaurant and got back in Dave's Mustang. On the way back, Dave had the urge to ask, "So, Jules, what degree are you going for? I myself am trying to get a bachelor's degree in Criminal Law."

"I'm going for a degree in Forensic Technology. I want to become a CSI so that the shit that happened to my aunt's husband doesn't happen again," Jules answered.

"Hmm. Maybe we could team up after we get our degrees? Open our own detective agency?" Dave half-joked.

"Sounds like a plan," Jules half-jokingly replied back.

Both had a good laugh as they arrived back on campus. They said their goodbyes as Jules got back to his car and went back to his apartment. Dave got to his last class and was sitting there thinking about the lunch he had with Jules. He wondered if there was some reason he felt a connection to the bear, but just decided to ignore it for now. Meanwhile, Julius was sitting on the couch in his apartment waiting until he had to leave for work, just thinking about David. He didn't know why but he felt happy being around the beagle. He felt that maybe if the two of them became closer friends, that maybe, they can help alleviate some of the pain that they both felt. For now, Julius just decided to boot up his X-Box 360 and play some Rock Band.

After a boring class, David got back home. Having to go to work in a couple hours, he decided to go online and see if any of his friends were on so he could chat for a while. He noticed a screen name he hadn't seen in almost 3 years, "BigRadW69." It belonged to someone he hadn't spoken to in 3 years and decided to find out what he wanted.

JurassicBeagle30: hey, wassup?

BigRadW69: not much

JurassicBeagle30: yeah, nice talking to you too

JurassicBeagle30: laterz

David sighed heavily and got ready for work. This weekend he would confront his father about Wade and was not looking forward to it. He knew his father would get pissed; most likely try to throw him out of the house. But David had an ace up his sleeve: his mom. It would be two days until he saw Jules again and thought those two days couldn't go by fast enough. But eventually they did. He talked to Wade more online, eventually getting to the point where they could talk on the phone again. Wade was so happy to hear David's voice again, that he actually cried on the phone. Eventually the night came and it was Wednesday morning and he would get to see Jules again.

The last couple of days were quite uneventful for Jules. He just mostly talked to his friends and family wanting to know how things were on the other side of the country. He told them all about the college he was attending, the job he had at Wal-Mart. He didn't find it the greatest job ever, but it gave him some extra spending money. Beside, he only worked five hours a day. It's not like he worked that hard. During these last two days, he always thought of David, the beagle that had caught him staring and who decided to take a chance on the big bear.

It was Saturday, and David was not looking forward to his confrontation with his father. He just hoped that his mom wouldn't be hurt further. He decided to call Wade and invite him over to be part of the confrontation. Wade was an orange tabby cat. He and David had been friends since they met in preschool. Wade stood at 5'9" and weighed about 135 pounds.

"Dad?" David began. "We need to talk."

"Oh? And what is this regarding?" his father asked. "And why is HE here?"

"'HE's' the reason we need to talk." David thought for a minute before continuing. "I know what you two have been doing for the past 3 years, and I want it to stop. I want my friend back."

"And what makes you think I'll stop?" his father threatened.

"I'll tell mom. I know you don't want to lose half of all this. Just give him the rest of the money and end it now!"

"And just who do you think she'll believe more: Me, or the son who's lied about his sexuality for the past 7 years?"

David was stunned. He couldn't believe that his dad knew! Unbeknownst to the two of them, Wade thought ahead and called David's mom on her cell phone and asked her to stay hidden until the confrontation. She however decided to make her presence known:

"Given what I just heard, I would be inclined to believe my son."

"Diane! H-H-How long have you been there?"

"Long enough, Jakob. Do you think I'm an idiot? Did you think I wouldn't notice $10,000 disappearing from our account each month?" accuses Diane.

"I was kind of hoping that it would have been put back fast enough so that it wouldn't be missed. After all, we do have more than enough to live comfortably for the rest of our lives," defends Jakob.

"That is beside the point! I still can't believe you would take advantage of someone like that! I want to know why you were doing it in the first place?"

"I don't need to explain myself to you!"

"Then I want a divorce!"

David couldn't resist the urge to shove this in his father's face: "Told ya!"

"Quiet David!" his father yelled.

"Don't you dare yell at my son! Either tell me why, or I will get a divorce!"

Seeing no way out of this, Jakobs decides to tell her the truth: "Because, since you got fired, we've been having sex less and less. Then, when Richard died we stopped altogether. I couldn't take it any more. I know you couldn't either. Then I found out Wade's sister was sick so I found a way to help the both of us: His sister would get the treatment she needs, and I finally be able to get some relief."

Diane however was not buying it. "That's all well and good for the last two years, but what about for the year before Richard died?"

"What about it? Wade and I have only been having sex for the last year and a half! I've been giving him the money in return for doing chores around the house."

"That's bullshit and you know it!" Wade yelled, having heard enough. "Your ‘chores' were just me in different outfits in different parts of the house!"

"That is enough out of you! If you value your sisters life, you will stay your tongue in my presence!"

"Shut the fuck up dad! You are not his boss!"

"I can have him arrested for prostitution if I saw fit."

Seeing the steely resolve in his dad's eyes, David decides it's best to not press his luck. His mom, however, saw right through his ruse.

"And how would you explain how you know he's a prostitute? The police are going to need more than just your word. And since I have bank statements saying you are just as guilty, I don't think you've got the balls."

Finally seeing his defeat, Jakob begrudgingly gives in to his wife's demands.

"Fine. What do you want me to do?"

"Give him the rest of the money and end it."

"Can we at least start having sex again? It's been two years. I miss him too, but I think it's time to let him go. You don't need to let him rule your every thoughts anymore."

"I guess I have been ignoring everything else, and for that I apologize. And David, I don't care if you're gay. You are still my son, and I still love you. Now, why don't you two go somewhere else? Your father and I still need to talk about this, and I would like to continue this in private."

David still couldn't believe what happened. So wade answered for him: "Okay, Mrs. Carranders. And thanks for everything. Both of you. Even though, the past three years have been shitty for me. At least my sister doesn't have to suffer anymore."

Wade pulled David away by the arm, and led him through the house to his room. They spent the rest of the day hanging out, talking, crying and just enjoying each other's company for the first time in three years.

Julius, meanwhile, was enjoying his day off when he received a welcomed surprise. He was playing Borderlands, after just having played CoD: MW2 for a few hours, when his doorbell rang.

"Hold on! I'm coming!"

He opened the door and was surprised with who he saw.

"Cheryll? What ‘re you doing here?"

It was his cousin, who he hadn't seen in a year and a half.

"I just figured you'd be lonely and would like a visit from home," Cheryll said.

Jules hugged his cousin tightly: "I'm so glad someone decided to visit. I was getting kinda lonely. So, come in, tell me what brings you to my neck of the woods."

"Well, I told mom that I wanted to come out here and visit you, and maybe start going to college out here. But, that's not the whole reason why. I have some sad news."

"What?"

"Jeffie was gunned down in his class by his teacher. His whole class was killed before his teacher blew up the building. Fortunately no one else was in the building."

"How...How long ago was this?" he slowly asked.

"Three days ago. I tried to call you, but I just couldn't brace myself for how you would react."

Julius sat there with tears streaming down his face. Jeffie was Jules' best friend and favorite cousin. The two of them were like brothers and told each other everything. Julius was the only one who knew that Jeffie was bisexual. The two even experimented with each other. Although Julius considered himself straight, he cherished what he and Jeffie did as special. Hearing that his ‘brother' was dead, just destroyed his heart. Cheryll decided to turn off his X-Box and just sit with him on the couch while he cried his heart out.
