Abyss

This is one of the dreams that I had a few months ago. No sexual stuff, just weird dream stuff.

I awoke. My lungs cracked and wheezed as air filled them. Dark grey ash covered my body, and I hacked up mounds of soot trapped in my chest. My vision was blurred and nearly compromised thanks to the ash permeating even my eyes. Stretching my atrophied muscles, I winced and groaned at the pain that shot through my back, legs, and arms. Wiping the ash from my eyes and clearing my lungs with a hearty cough, I finally surveyed my surroundings.

A deep haze infested my environment, obscuring my vision. Varying in size, glowing mushrooms dimly illuminated small areas around them, serving as crimson beacons amidst the darkness. Very occasionally, small sets of glowing eyes not unlike gems skittered through the abyssal darkness, filling me with a sense of anxiety. Whispers in a number of different pitches and volumes began cascading my ears as I finally escaped my groggy state. More anxiety and even fear entered my mind as the voices incessantly spoke out, speaking in a foreign tongue that somehow also felt familiar. One voice spoke out amidst the rest. "Look down."

Looking towards my feet, I saw a trail left by someone - or something - had left nearby my resting place. I weakly followed the trail, while the little creatures shuffled uncomfortably close to my vicinity. They dared not touch me, but I sensed no malice within them upon seeing them up close. They were matte black in color, completely hairless, and possessed four arms and two vestigial legs. Their feet had regressed into simple little knobs of flesh, but their hands had evolved, each possessing 10 digits with a lack of any claws or finger nails and in a very similar shape to a chameleon's foot. Their eyes were prismatic in shape, and white without any visible pupils or corneas, potentially suggesting blindness. They appeared to lack any form of ears or noses, but enormous maws lined with crooked, jagged teeth belied their carnivorous nature.

They clicked and murmured amongst each other as I continued to follow the trail left by something. Many lost interest in me and simply vanished into the darkness, resuming their activities or tasks. A strange few followed me, always making sure to stay far enough away that they could escape into the darkness should my paranoia and anxiety get the best of me. I heard coughing and moans of agony and pain further ahead, and tried to run, only to fall on my face.

Gazing at my left leg, I was horrified to see that it had begun to shrivel and rot. There was no physical pain, but I could feel my sanity breaking as my leg became a vestigial lump of flesh that I could weakly hobble on. I limped towards the moans, holding back my own screams and sobs as I trudged through the ash blanketing the ground. Seconds became minutes. Minutes became hours. Hours became what felt like days as I continued on, marching through the darkness in hopes of finding someone else. I fell to the ground, exhausted, and blacked out.

Waking in an unfamiliar place once more, I saw one of the creatures face to face. It stared inquisitively, licking its chops with a ghostly white tongue. I reached my hand out in an attempt to shoo it away, but it simply batted my hand with its own. It sauntered off, growing disinterested with me, leaving me alone amidst this bleak landscape. The voices had stopped, alongside any other remnant of noise. I laid next to the softly glowing, blood-colored mushroom, held my arms and tucked my legs in, and waited for sleep to grab hold of me once more. I began to sob quietly, my cries echoing into the hollow void.

"...e fine..." I quieted myself, wiping the tears away, and called out. "...You'll be fine..." A disembodied voice echoed this message. The rambling whispers no longer plagued me, and the soft light of the mushroom brought a new comfort I hadn't felt before. I remained in my position, falling gently asleep again to the sound of the voice and its soothing, if not horribly vague, message.

I awoke in my room. My leg was in horrible pain, but at least I could call out to those around me. We found there to be no real problems with the leg itself. Nerve damage is what my family thought. I still don't know. I can't help but feel like that abyss has something else I need to do there. I can't know for sure until I go back.
