Pelten's Journal: Of Sources and Demons

World building nonsense. I've been having too much fun doing this type of thing. Most of what I will be jotting down for world building purposes will not be posted, but figured I might as well post it down. There may even be a geography lesson somewhere around the future as given by a student feline. Also, creating many many many species for a particular purpose. Layne's world is definitely about to get bigger~

~Entry One: Research of Strange Occurrences

In a dark room at night, a red-plumed Avu sat at a study desk. There on the desk a small pot held a vine that grew and twisted with a bulb that glowed bright warm light enough to illuminate what the avian was doing. He had a quill in hand and a smile upon his beak, scratching sounding off as he made his mark upon the journal before him.

Right, the day is Monday and I am writing this entry to compile just a bit of information about a certain appearance that has been baffling me. Sources. Strange, an enigmatic creation of seemingly nothing that appears in various portions of the world where natural magics run wild and a single bit of corrupted magic could create a strange occurrence known as a Source. Now, I am unsure of where these natural disasters come from, but that is exactly what they can be described as natural disasters. They appear as if on a whim of nature and simply act upon their own nature, that is to say, they create demons or rather what we classify as demons. You see, not all demons are cut from the same cloth, and as such, there have been heavy strides as of late to recognize the validity of intelligent demons, but the creatures that the Source creates are beasts of burden, they act simply upon the instinct to consume.

The Source itself does not have a set description. From research done and personal experience, there are many. They gather what form they have from the area surrounding them and as such have an aspect of the area around them as well. The worst I have heard of is a Source that spawned within a poisonous bog, there were many lost lives of court mages trying their hardest to seal it. I myself have only encountered two in my life, and for those moments I had nearly lost my head. In one of those cases in which my life was threatened by a Source, we had stumbled upon the fact that these strange things could learn and gain intelligence, in fact, the one that had nearly done me in had been able to speak and reason, though, it had desired simply to grow and grow. Delving deep into books and first-hand accounts I found that indeed Sources grew in power and knowledge the longer they are left alone to their own devices, which is a frightening thing.

Now, out of all the data I've compiled, the most useful accounts have been from those outside of the court's influence. Occultist. Occultist are wielders of forbidden magic, though, this magic is being re-evaluated, it is a dangerous thing to the user as it involves several magics that are inscribed onto the body as well as the power to take the power of other creatures, a magic that can certainly be abused, but thus far the only occultists I have ever met have used their magic to seal dangerous creatures within themselves as well as put an end to Sources. A particular friend of mine that I will keep anonymous had told me of an encounter with a Source. To quote, "The air around the Source itself felt as if all were taken away, the frost and chill of the forest had disappeared, the trees themselves were being drawn in towards the Source, and the Source itself seemed to be made out of the very earth and stuff surrounding it."

That very description had been a rather chilling account and I wasn't really sure what to make of it. These occurrences are rare enough that first-hand accounts aren't too common, and research is sparse as you would be quite dumb to even try and capture a Source as they are simply far too powerful. Now, perhaps it is privy to jot down the nature of how a Source acts and some of the powers they hold.

They can produce creatures that are considered the lowest form of demon as minions and these creatures simply do not disappear once the Source is gone. It is because of this that when a Source is found, a team of inspectors and powerful magi are sent to exterminate what they can and shut down the Source. Many people who encounter a Source for the first time make the mistake of believing that they are simple things that cannot use any magic for themselves, but if endangered the Source will fire off spells at a rapid pace and the spells vary depending on how the Source is formed, and many other details that are too unknown. How a Source is exactly formed is not truly known and perhaps if we knew then we could actually put a stop to them, but for now they are simply a natural portion of the world.

Higher intelligence is something frightening that can happen in Sources that are left to their own devices. As I have detailed before in this very entry, I have found myself face to face with a Source that could speak and reason, and yet there wasn't exactly a rhyme or reason as to what it did what it did. It simply spoke as if we were mere curiosities to be examined and perhaps in the most apt way I can describe it, it was a child. It was a newborn child with a chilling voice that robbed our own speech and kept our eyes wide, a child with the power to bend reality around it, a newborn with a curiosity of the world that was as powerful as its desire to grow and absorb life. They draw power from the air around them and do not stop until everything is dead. It is said that after all mana around the Source has been taken in, it will create a domain and create something terrifying, but this is only conjecture and nothing has actually been found.

This world of ours has many frightening and strange things, demons are the least of ours concerns and truthfully I have already made plans to head into the city of demons as an ambassador of sorts to converse and learn from them, perhaps they will know more about Sources, perhaps they will enlighten us about various aspects of life, or perhaps they will prove the most opposed against demon-kind correct, regardless I will do my job, and as for Sources, I hope to learn more in the coming years.

There are many things to jot down in this journal of mine, of strange creatures and occurrences, in terms of that, perhaps I should also include various powerful species in here, hm, I am unsure. I could always ask Layne of Lunar Felines if necessary, perhaps that will be my next entry. Regardless it is late now and I must sleep. Tomorrow is another day for research and much, much more.

~Entry Two: What Makes a Demon?

The day, rather, the night is Monday and I cannot get something out of my mind. What makes a demon? I've done ample research before in our own court's library and been to many others to see what I can find, and yet for some reason I cannot for the life of me understand it. There are several explanations with varying degrees of research done and some of the most well-researched theories are all so very impossible to grasp.

Firstly, I'd like to say that not all demons are raving beasts ready to suck soul and blood from your body as some less educated would have you believe, it is a sad fact that many who are educated believe this as such. I would propose a different classification for lower demons that have no thought process other than to kill and survive, or the ones that can think and wish to hurt people. Corrupted perhaps? It is the only thing believable when you meet a demon that shakes your hand and says, "Good day." And turn around only to meet a massive mound of elemental force ready to knock your head clean off also classified as a demon. Strange.

The most researched and somewhat plausible explanation deals with magic, but not what affinity a demon is drawn to, but rather where they draw their places of power from. Avu such as myself draw on inner reserves of magic to toughen our bodies since we are so naturally resistant to the forces of magic around us and find it difficult to draw from anywhere else. Now, Lunar Felines draw commonly from the cosmos and some from the abyss. That is an interesting thing, because many demons draw from the abyss to fuel their magic and yet we do not consider Lunar Felines demons. To explain this, it is not only the place that a being draws from, but the way that they draw from it. Demons are inherently able to simply move as if their actions held sway on a place of power where as the rest of us must call upon the place of power. That is the interesting thing. Of all the common traits that demons have, even the least proficient at magic may simply move and bring forth a surge of magic from where they draw upon their place of power. This has been noted many times as the only strange and common occurrence between demons and we who are not. Some who are perhaps a bit too rash in their judgment making have called demons a higher state of being, as a demon can be also made. We have many cases of corrupted beings turning to demons and wreaking havoc, and yet there are a few cases where people simply become demons and live their normal lives. Now that is strange! A feline in the Countres region of our continent simply grew a third eye and became an entirely different being, and yet they retained their personality and thought process and lived their lives normally. I hear this is more common on the continent of demons, but I'd have to visit to actually understand it myself. Regardless demons are still an area we must strive to study and understand rather than shun.

Another little fun fact is from what has been drawn from first-hand experiences, demons dislike going out of their affinity. They can and will use magic that suits the situation, but in general, they are not adaptable magically as we are, they simply do not like it and it puts a mental strain on them to use magic outside of their comfort zone. In general demons seem to enjoy doing what they like the most, this creates some problems when it comes to law and demons, especially here in our continent of Ultera which is primarily governed by the court, regardless it is an interesting thing to see so many demons display the same type of behaviour simply because they desire to despite consequence. A bit foolhardy, but interesting.

In closing; various demons of mid to higher intelligence can seem very strange to us. Their personalities are just a bit different, the way they go about their everyday lives and communication doesn't make full sense to us, but perhaps this is only due to a lack of understanding. More research is warranted, more communication is warranted, and I'll be glad to see that. Perhaps before I leave to the other continent I'll visit my friend Layne and pick up a potion or two to keep myself healthy just in case there are any strange diseases, or perhaps just to talk to someone seemingly interested in things outside of the court's knowledge. Regardless I should sleep for the night and close this entry with; demons are simply different, not evil.
