In Totality

"Two squirrels endeavor to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse in a totally unique way."

Been a while since I posted anything, but here's a light, flirty romance/erotica. With two of my squirrel characters this time.

"So, when's this thing_going to happen, Bella?" Wren asked. The dark, walnut-hued squirrel placed his paws on his denim-clad hips. His big, bushy tail bobbed behind him with every twitchy motion, as well as the caress of the mild, early-October breeze. _She's been talking about it for weeks.

It wasn't that he didn't have an interest in outer space. He'd seen Star Trek before. But celestial showcases rarely lived up to their billing. Though, to be fair, that was often down to the weather. That meteor shower a few months back? Rain. If not that, light pollution. _At least where I live._But it was daylight now, so that didn't matter. And he wasn't inside city limits. There wasn't a cloud in the rural sky.

"It's not a thing," came his mate's delayed, distracted correction. She was fiddling with her phone. "It's an eclipse. A total solar," she emphasized, "eclipse. Very rare. Once-in-a-lifetime. Bet it's been hundreds of years since one passed over this _very_spot. Maybe thousands!" She put the device away. "And don't pretend like you didn't already know that."

"Well, it better happen before sunset." Squinting, the whiskered rodent raised a paw to shield his sensitive, blue eyes. The autumn sun wasn't as potent as its summer counterpart, but the angles it took cast the world in higher contrast. Or is that my imagination? Could be the foliage.

Indeed, the vaguely-hilly farmland effectively glowed. The crinkling, changing leaves were shades of blood orange and brick-red, with stretches of dry, wild grasses varying between yellow and green. A last hurrah before winter's oppressive reign. It's not particularly grand, but there's definitely a pastoral-

"You're so impatient," Bella cooed, hugging him from behind.

"I'm just not very spontaneous," Wren defended, easing back against her. "I have to think about things."

"And I don't?"

"I didn't say that." He continued to gaze at the horizon. Old barns and modest, cozy houses provided concrete signs of civilization_.One of those houses was Bella's. They'd walked from there, a half-mile at least. Or so she'd claimed. _Felt longer.

"I'll rub off on you one of these days," she insisted. "Maybe even today."

"Is that a promise?"

"Mm-hmm." A few inches shorter than him, the female squirrel's pelt was also brown, though a lighter, warmer mahogany. Swaying side to side with him, her paws slipped beneath the front of his periwinkle, button-up t-shirt. He never tucked it in. "Relax. It's the weekend." And, what's more, he was staying with her for the duration. Taking a half-day at work, he'd arrived after lunch. It'd been a twenty-mile drive.

"Mm." He sighed as her fingers combed across his creamy chest and belly. That feels nice. Her touch was intuitive. _She knows how to calm me down. Or, rather, knows how to seduce me._Not wanting to succumb so easily, he insisted, "This place is hell on my allergies." He nodded at their surroundings. "See that?"

"No."

"You're not looking."

"Everything bothers you, Wren."

"Weeds. Unchecked. Far as the eye can see."

"If you could, you'd never leave the great indoors."

"That's not true," Wren insisted, looping his tail around her back.

In return, she furled hers around his front while nibbling on his nape. Her buckteeth were sharp. He tensed, and she eased up. "If it's not true, then stop," she breathed, kissing to the side of his neck, "complaining."

"Mm. Bella ... "

She reached up and scratched behind one of his tufted, pointy ears. "I know it's one of your favorite pastimes, but-"

"Is not! I just-"

"Hmm?" She turned him around. Face-to-face, she undid the top button on his purple-blue shirt, revealing off-white chest fur. She fought the urge to play with it and, instead, popped open the second button. She'd wait until she got the whole shirt off. Delayed gratification.

"You complain about my alleged complaining more than I supposedly complain," he insisted. "If I'm so hard to listen to, why are we together?"

Bella shrugged. "You have a cute tail."

"That all?"

"I'd have to think about it." She gave him a sly look. "I know you approve of thinking."

Chastened, Wren mumbled, "I don't want to ruin this for you. I hope I'm not."

"You're not," Bella insisted, standing on her tip-toes and touching her nose to his. Her eyes were brown, like chocolate. Rich and sweet. "I just _really_want you to-"

"Relax," he provided dully, whiskers twitching.

"There's no reason to be nervous," she promised. "We're safer in the countryside than the city. You've stayed weekends with me before."

Yes. He had. But, "We've never made love outdoors in-" His eyes darted, voice lowering. That's not entirely true. "Broad daylight," he amended. "And so far from your house!" We're probably trespassing.

"We've been together a year, now. About time you got more comfortable with it."

"With what, exactly? What's this called?"

"Consider it a form of natural communion," Bella suggested.

"Is that some kind of badge of honor for you country critters?"

"Hey, the birds and the bees do it. Even educated fleas do it."

"I thought that was 'fall in love'?"

"Common misconception," Bella insisted.

"So, what's 'it,' again?" He'd never seen birds or bees communing. There had to be a better term.

She spread her paws, insisting, "You'll know it when you see it."

He clicked his tongue. "That's porn."

"You're getting warmer," she said in a singsong voice.

Wren barked out a laugh. "And you're being silly." He shook his head. Sometimes, he didn't understand her.

Both in their mid-30's, they'd met via an online dating app. Their baseline shared interests had been basketball, reality cooking shows, and movie soundtracks. He was the first to admit they were more different than alike. But wasn't that part of the appeal? The constant figuring of each other out, one balancing the other's imbalances? Don't dissect your relationship, Wren. Sexual chemistry is hardly an exact science.

Part of him couldn't help it, though. All my past relationships failed. I'm sure it was mostly my fault. If I know what makes us work as a couple, maybe I can prevent the pain of-

"You like when I'm silly." She began loosening the belt to his pants.

"Huh?" Wren's breath hitched. His whiskers twitched again. You can't prevent anything. You're time's prisoner. It dulls, erodes, wears you down. You and everyone else. He felt a sudden sense of defeat.Bella has you pegged. You can't relax, can you? Maybe that's why you always end up single. You're so worried about something going wrong that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. But he didn't want that to happen here. Not with her. "I love you," he blurted.

Bella blinked. He'd said it before, of course. But usually during or after sex, when he was most uninhibited and emotional. Rarely in casual conversation. He could be so uptight.

He swallowed and mumbled, "That was random. I'm sorry. Just, uh, wanted you to know."

"Don't ever apologize for that."

"I'm-"

"Wren." She thwarted him from apologizing for apologizing. "I'm glad to see you open up so readily. That's part of why I want to bring you deeper into nature." She felt it would be therapeutic for him. It was for her. "Also, I love you, too."

Wren closed his eyes and nuzzled at her face, their whiskers touching and tangling. He pulled her to his half-exposed chest. She squeaked, and he gave a throaty noise of affection. For all his resisting, he was ultimately glad to be here.

You spend so much time together these days. Practically every weekend. They alternated between the countryside and the city.Might as well be living together. She's never going to leave that house, you know. It was over a hundred years old. She'd inherited it from her grandparents. She was incredibly close to them and shared memories about them often. You're going to have to move in with her. I can't see her living in the city, in your smaller apartment. She'd told him as much a month or so back. "I don't mind visiting here, especially when I know someone. But it's not a place I can lay down permanent roots."

But can I acclimate to the countryside? What's there to do out here? I'm used to having restaurants, shops, entertainment options all within walking distance. Maybe I don't always avail of them, but they're there. Sure, the scenery is prettier here, but-

"Wren?"

"What?"

"Admit it."

"You're, uh, certainly sillier than me," was his cloudy reply. No wonder you like the city. There's always a diversion to disrupt your focus. It keeps you from having to face yourself head-on. You live inside yourself. Get outside!

"We're in the middle of nowhere, Wren. And, soon enough, the sun will be blotted out. What's to worry about? Who's going to see us?"

"I don't know." The male squirrel shrugged his narrow shoulders. I wish I was more muscular. "God?"

"You're not exactly religious." Neither was she, for that matter. But she did consider herself to be spiritual. Sort of. More accurately, she was open to the mysteries and possibilities of an infinite universe.

"Still." Wren paused, ears cocking atop his dark-brown head. Crickets. Frogs. Trilling and chirping incessantly. Don't they ever get tired?"What gave you the idea to do this? Have sex during an eclipse? That's so-" He shook his head. "Specific."

"Pardon me. I didn't know it was against the law to want to try clearly defined activities."

"Yeah, but you're not like that. _I'm_like that," he insisted. "You 'go with the flow.' This is planned. Bet you got it off a TV show."

"No," Bella insisted. "No." She crossed her arms, tilting her head and saying, "It was on the news."

"That's TV!"

"Saw a fluff piece about how it's good luck to conceive under the northern lights, so-"

"Wait, what channel was this_on?" _We're not anywhere near the aurora.

"Who cares?"

"And this nugget of knowledge translates to eclipses?"

"What's it hurt? They're both celestial phenomenon. Or, uh, phenomena?" She scrunched her furry face. "I always confuse the two."

"Wait." Wren backtracked. "Hold up. Um, to be clear, we're not trying to conceive... right?"

"Not that I know of," she replied evenly. There was a pause. Her mahogany head tilted. "Why? Is that something _you_want?"

The question tripped him up. He stammered, "I, uh ... no. Not exactly." He loosened his hug, straightening his posture. He'd never envisioned himself as a parent. I don't have the patience for it."Do you?"

"I just thought the general_idea_was cute. Who says good luck doesn't apply to the attempt, even without the end result?"

"I'm, uh, wholeheartedly behind the attempt," Wren confirmed with a nod.

She smirked. "I know."

The walnut squirrel blew out a breath. "I didn't mean to make things-"

"Not that I believe in that."

"Awkward."

"Luck, that is." That implied a complete randomness. She felt there must be a pattern of some sort, something beyond comprehension. "Maybe, instead of luck, we'll be blessed?"

"Maybe."

"It's just for kicks, you know?" She placed a paw on his chest. "Don't worry about it, lovely. I'm on the pill."

"Stop," he muttered, feeling his face get hot.

"What? Calling you lovely? But you are," she cooed.

Wren just shook his head, continuing, "Let's be honest, we've probably only got a few years left before-"

"We're put out to pasture?" She gestured at the landscape. "Looks like we're already there."

Wren's whiskers twitched. He pulled back, rubbing at his neck and pacing back and forth. "You know what I mean."

She did, but crossed her arms and insisted, "I've never wanted kids. I don't want the responsibility. The expense. My siblings are carrying on the family line. I prefer my freedom. I like the quiet life." She let that hang before continuing, "Do I feel my biological clock ticking down?" She stretched in place before sighing, "Sure? There are urges, but-" She shook her head. "Thirty-six isn't _old,_Wren. No matter what anyone says. There's still time to change my mind. Our," she emphasized, "minds. If we want to. Still time to do a lot of things. We're not going to be put in a box on a shelf unless we put ourselves there."

"Yeah," he whispered. He stopped pacing. Why can't you just let things be?"I'm-"

"Don't say sorry." She frowned.

"Right."

"I appreciate the sentiment," Bella said, expression softening. "No one's ever actually wanted to-" She kicked at the grass with her bare foot-paws. "You know? With me. Not that they've told me, anyway. It's kind of flattering." She began to smile again. "Don't feel bad that I shot it down."

"It was just an idle thought. I have too many of those."

"That's part of your appeal."

"Is it?"

"It would be easier if we could do it a hundred times over," she opined. "Then we'd cover every experience we possibly could. But, then, maybe the experiences we _do_have wouldn't mean as much."

He blinked. "Do, uh-"

"Life," Bella supplied with a knowing, squinting grin. "What? Did you think I meant-"

"Well! You planted that stupid Cole Porter song in my head," he insisted bashfully. "And you're the one who dragged me out here to-"

"I've been trying to get you out on a long, lazy nature walk-"

"Like farm animals."

"For months," she swore. It wasn't that Wren hated nature. He just liked observing it from a respectable distance. It was alien to him. He needed to view it as something more elemental, a second skin. Bella felt she could bring that about with exposure. "You can't turn down witnessing a total solar eclipse. That's a trump card."

The walnut squirrel nodded and said, because he had to, "I only brought it up because until now, or until you, that is, I've, uh ... "

Bella waited, patiently, tail drifting in the breeze.

"We're both old enough to have had other lovers."What the hell? Why are you reminding her of that? "No, what I mean_is-" He sucked air. "I miss you when you're not around. _Really_miss you. It's an ache." He hugged his tail to his chest. "I've never felt that before. Not with anyone. This is different. _You're_different. I, uh-" He looked aside, faltering. _I'm no good at speaking. Only thinking. And that's open for debate."So, yeah. I was sorta wondering-"

"You want to make our attachment more permanent?" she guessed, placing a paw on his face. She caressed his cheeks, strumming his whiskers with her thumb. "Lessen the distance?"

He nodded shyly, leaning his face into her fingers. "Maybe we could move in together."

Bella traced his lips and replied, "I'd like that. Very much."

Opening his muzzle, Wren nibbled her fingertip with his buckteeth.

She pushed the digit into his mouth, up to the knuckle.

Closing his eyes, he suckled on it.

"I love how vulnerable you get when you talk matters of the heart," she breathed against his cheek-fur.

"Doesn't that come with the territory?"

"You'd be surprised. Anyway, it's endearing. I don't care if you're eloquent or not." She withdrew her finger from his mouth, fur matted with his saliva.

With a relieved, shy smile, the walnut squirrel said, "I'd rather have your joie de vivre than my sensitivity. I know you razz me for being a city boy. I'm trying to step outside my comfort zone. I _do_feel I've been sheltered, and I wish I was more like-"

"It's just teasing, lovely. I hope you know that."

"I do. I just-"

"And you never told me you knew French."

"Fin de siecle? Bonjour?" He shrugged. "That's the extent."

"Amouor?" Bella supplied with a nearly-dimpled smile. Her whiskers glistened in the light.

He beamed back helplessly. "That, too."

"Good," she murmured. "That's pretty important."

Wren pressed his sniffy, twitchy nose to Bella's head-fur. He just couldn't keep away. It was like she was a magnet he was drawn to. He breathed in slowly and deeply. Her scent. Always of berries. It was the shampoo and conditioner she used for her pelt. I've applied it to her often enough."How long is an eclipse, anyway?" he murmured. He'd almost forgotten about it."Haven't seen one before."

There'd been a lunar eclipse last summer. The moon had turned strawberry red.Or it was supposed to. Stray clouds kept obscuring the view. He'd only gotten brief glimpses. Then there was that partial solar. But that was, what, decades ago? Twenty-five years?_He'd been in the fourth grade. _Or was it fifth? He'd always prided himself on having a good memory, but as the years accumulated certain things blurred together. It's going the same way as your focus. Always distracted. What if you end up like your grandmother and get dementia? Forty is staring me in the face. The possibility is closer than it is far. But so is Bella. I'm not alone. And, like she said, we're not old. Not old. Not-

"What are you thinking about?" she pressed, wondering if he was still hung up on details from their heart-to-heart.

"Just, uh, back in elementary," he said, evasively. "School, I mean." He swallowed. "There was a partial solar eclipse. The teachers made us all stay inside in case we decided to look up and 'burn your eyes out.' A few students got to go to the playground with these special viewing masks. I don't know what gave them the privilege. I just remember being jealous, pressing up to the classroom window and craning my neck. Saw trees. An eerie, green darkness, like the sun was a spotlight on a stage and a filter had just been placed in front of it."

"Really? Huh. You have a better memory than me." She shook her head. "Don't recall any of that."

"A great memory has its downsides," he said. Like remembering all the little pains and disgraces. "So, I asked you about-"

"Right. Length." She groped at his clothed crotch.

"Eek!" His tail swished, blue eyes widening. "Hey!"

"You'll have to remove those before I can get an accurate reading, sir."

"Bella ... "

"You set yourself up, sometimes," she insisted, withdrawing her smartphone. "How can I help you learn spontaneity if I don't practice it on you?" Her furred, clawed thumb swiped about. "Think this one will be about-" She dropped off. "Four minutes?"

"What? That's it?"

"That's long for an eclipse! Some barely last a minute." She slipped her phone back into her pocket, adding, "That's just the totality, though. The prelude and postlude will stretch the whole thing out. But," she said, proceeding to unbutton the rest of her mate's shirt, "I was hoping to climax during the totality phase."

"Why?"

"Cause it'd be cool? Or, well, hot." She considered. "Can something be both?"

"That's how tornadoes happen."

Bella chittered with mirth. "Take it off," she said of his undone shirt.

Wren obeyed and shrugged the garment off. It crumpled to the grass. His milky chest rose and fell with increasingly excited breaths. He folded his dark-brown limbs, then unfolded them, clasping them behind his back instead. What should I do with myself? What pose should I be striking?

"Mmh," Bella went, rubbing the front of his body. He had a thin, trim build, like that of a marathon runner. "Now, about those pants ... "

"What about yours?"

"What about them?" she posed, running her clawed paws up and down his sides.

"If you want to make this 'deadline of darkness,' we better start soon. I happen," Wren emphasized proudly, "to have stamina."

"Oh, really?" She giggled.

"What's so funny?"

"Nothing."

"You should know!"

"You can manage a quickie with the proper motivation." She gave him a playful nudge before raising her arms and stripping her t-shirt off. She tossed it. Her bra soon joined it. Her soft, furry breasts hung free, weighed down by gravity. The pink, fleshy nipples shone in the slanting light. "How's this?"

"It's-" Needing a moment, Wren said, "Good."

She scoffed. "Of all the adjectives you could choose?"

"I thought my lack of eloquence didn't bother you?"

Bella sucked her cheeks in, advising seriously, "Just don't clam up on me. We're only going to get one shot at this."

Wren gave a 'yeah, yeah' nod and asked, "So, okay, does this timetable include foreplay? Cause that's going to add several minutes."

"Does verbal foreplay count? We've been doing that since we got here."

He nodded, allowing for that. Fumbling with his jeans, he undid the button and tugged on the zipper. They dropped past his hips, down his thighs. She wants to be quick about this? I can do that! I'll be like-

"Is that bulge for me?" Bella asked, hungrily eying his boxer-briefs.

"Um, yeah," he muttered, suddenly remembering they were standing in the middle of a sloping field. "So, uh, should we start?" He looked around them, heart pounding. There was nothing to hide their bodies. "Like, if you seriously want to time this perfectly-"

"Relax," Bella reiterated.

"Right."

"Deep breaths," she urged.

Deep breaths.

"Say it with me? Re-"

"-lax."

"We have privacy out here. I promise. No cameras, no passers-by."

"Okay." He still didn't sound convinced. What about drones? Satellites?

Taking a deep breath of her own, Bella replied, "Yes, I'd really prefer to hit the bull's-eye, but it's not the end of the world if-"

"Kind of a tight window to aim for, is all."

"That a euphemism?" Bella pressed, loosening her own pants and doing a little tail-shaking dance to get out of them.

Soon, her only adornment was green panties. A wet spot was visible when her legs moved apart. Her scent was getting stronger. The breeze was blowing it right to him. Faintly spicy. It tickled his sniffy nose.

Just then, Wren saw a billowing cloud in the distance. His ears perked to attention, tail raising, eyes narrowing. "What's-" Oh. Never mind. Just a truck going down a dusty, gravel road. Likely too far away to make them out, especially if the driver was looking straight ahead.

"You're looking the wrong way," she advised.

Wren swallowed and turned his head back to his nearly naked lover. "Euphemism?" he finally echoed. "Maybe. Sorta." His eyes traveled up and down her body, resting at the thicker, fluffier fur of her barely-concealed loins. A heat coursed through his body. "Now that you mention it."

"Come 'ere," she went, reaching for him.

Wren leaned forward.

Bella stood on her tip-toes, arms around his neck. Their pointed muzzled mashed and twisted together as they kissed. Lips suckling, sliding together, each squirrel fought for a stronger taste of the other. Unfortunately, they had to breathe. Noses weren't doing their lungs justice right now. So, she broke the kiss with an audible smack and huffed for air, insisting huskily, "Let's just do our best to make sure we never forget this. That's all I-" Her tail swooned aside. "Mmf!"

Wren initiated another kiss, smothering the rest of her sentence. Desire had temporarily overtaken his insecurities. The message had finally been received. He was going to enjoy himself and live in the moment. No matter what. _I can do this! I can do ... well, her._His paws made quick work of her panties, inching them down her hips until they fell to her ankles.

Bella daintily kicked them away, completely nude but at no disadvantage. She easily wrested back control. Sinking to her knees and curling her fingers into his own underwear, she practically tore them off.

Wren shook, devoid of any and all thought. There was only her and what she was doing to him and what he wanted to do to her in return.

Knowing she had him, she enjoyed the fruits of her victory. She huffed and panted on his furry, tufted sac. Rodents had reputations for big balls. It was well-earned. Moaning from the throat in order to vibrate his orbs, she suckled on one before switching to the other, trying to get them into her mouth. Then, with heady ambition, she aimed for both at once. Not so successful. But it was worth a shot.

At this point, they were swelling and pulling tight to his body from his arousal, which made them difficult to handle. However, it also made them more sensitive to stimulation, so it wasn't entirely a loss. She abandoned the suckling for a more erotic mouthing and kissing.

"Oh," he whimpered, paws gripping her shoulders. "Ahh." He hunched over, large tail catching the sun. Back-lit, it cast him in striking silhouette.

Bella's muzzle tilted upward, nose bumping against his emerging length. It was half-peeking out of its fuzzy, protective sheath. She remedied this. Swiftly. Her tongue swirled. It lapped and licked. Not a minute later, Wren had a full, healthy erection. Six inches long. Smooth, deep-pink, pulsing with erotic power.

He moaned again. He felt like he should be contributing more, but really, what else could he do but enjoy it?

The mahogany squirrel moved up to kiss the smooth, blunt tip, dancing her tongue across the slit before surrounding the head with her mouth. After a moment to let him adjust, she began to bob her muzzle.

Wren nearly melted. Pupils dilated, buckteeth jutting from his maw, he panted and stared. Oh, god. Watching her do this? He whimpered pitifully. His tail curled toward the tip, ears standing on end. "Mm, mm! Mmh ... "

Without warning, Bella eased up and pulled off. A strand of saliva connected his glans to her muzzle. She severed it with a flick of a finger, licking her lips and saying. "You were saying about foreplay?"

"Um." He shook his head. He could hear his pulse in his ears. "Uh-huh," he went dumbly. His penis throbbed, giving tense, little jumps. He looked down at it. "We should-"

The mahogany squirrel giggled. She loved having this effect on him. Not just because it felt good. It made her feel powerful.

"Ishould sit down," Wren finally managed. Before I fall over.

"Oh? Wanna roll around in the grass?" She casually sprawled back, spreading her reddish-brown legs and placing her paws upon her white breasts. She played with those hardened nipples. The pose was incredibly seductive and inviting. In the middle of this wild field, full of life, she seemed like a goddess in a painting. A work of art. The way the light hit her pelt? The way her breasts rose and fell?

Wren fell to his knees, as if her sensuality had slayed him. She was a few inches shorter than him, a bit heavier. He didn't care. Those curves. Her tail, immaculately-groomed, was aflame with color as it jutted out beside her. He could see each individual strand of fur moving in the breeze, mimicking the blades of grass. Dust motes seemed to swirl around them like magic dust. The cacophony of insects and frogs, so annoying earlier, was now a chorus. It was an orchestra. It was their soundtrack. The world was the squirrels' stage.

"Wren."

Thighs still parted, the pink, glistening oasis of her sex relentlessly flashed him. She wanted him to see it, wanted him to want it, to want her. And he did. But more than her body was the look in her eyes. It was keen, irreverent, smoldering. He could sense the strength of her personality. That was the trigger, the one that turned his lust into love. Every single time.

"Mm. You're not answering me," she scolded impatiently.

"Grass. Ground. Sure."

"Thought you had allergies?"

"I do. But you-" She's a siren. I'm going to crash upon her shore. There's no resisting it. "It's so hard to, uh-"

"Very hard," she observed, eying his cock. He knew that look. She wanted it. Not in her mouth this time, either.

"Hard. To swoon," he supplied, breaths ragged, "without falling over." And further over he did fall. To all fours, positioned above her. He quivered from the strength of his need. "I don't see that we have a choice but to lay down."

"There's a sycamore over yonder." She pointed down the hill. "We're squirrels. Sex and trees?" Her paws went to his sides. She drew invisible patterns in his fur. "Great combination, if you ask me. Pin me to the trunk, lovely. Have your way with me," she breathed. "Unless you're more into oaks. Which would make sense. After all, you've got some acorns on you." She reached between them and fondled his sac.

Wren chittered. He fought the urge to press down and grind against her hips, to take here then and there. She was asking for it, wasn't she? But he had to control himself for just a little longer, or they'd never finish in the window of totality. "Well. I, uh, took an antihistamine this morning," he said, trying to stay on topic. "I can _do_the grass ... I mean, you. In the grass." He cleared his throat. "Only, cause if we do it beneath the tree, the limbs and leaves will block the sky. We won't get a good view of the-"

"Right, right. You always think ahead," she teased, arms coming up and around his neck. She drew him down, flat against her body.

"I'm detail-oriented," he whispered against her cheek.

"What would I do without you?"

"I shudder to think."

"Guess we'll have to save the tree for later," she hinted.

"So, what, we're going to make a habit of-"

"Trust me, once you get a taste of this-"

"Bella," he huffed.

"Horny?"

"Yes! Please," he squeaked pitifully. "I don't wanna talk anymore. I just want-"

"What?"

"Pussy," he blurted crudely.

She snickered. "It's only fair. I want cock. I suppose we can find a way to meet in the middle, if you know what I mean."

Oh, I do, I do!

"You're so adorable when you're worked up. You get all shy for some reason. Guess you're like that all the time, but it's really accentuated when we're both naked. Wonder why that is?" Her paws, while she spoke, played with his tail.

"I'm not," Wren said, pressing his hips to hers. He began to grind, now. Yes. Yes! He worked himself between her thighs. "Shy," he eventually finished.

"Just self-conscious, right? Mmh, what's the difference, again?" She was panting, too. Just as worked up, if not more so, than him. She just had far more composure. Or was that self-control? Either way, he was wrapped around her finger.

"Bella," he huffed.

"Yes, lovely?"

"I should've brought my camera."

"What does that have to do with fucking me?" she asked crudely.

"Nothing, but ... the eclipse. Once in a lifetime. We'll have no way of-"

"You're worrying again. We agreed." Without warning, she hugged him tightly and threw her weight to the side, rolling them both. Wren was now flat on his back. Bella, breasts heaving, stilted her arms and lifted her head and shoulders, straddling the other squirrel's hips. She touched a finger to his pink nose. "No," she said, moving it aside to flick his whiskers, "distractions."

His eyes crossed, and he blinked. "Sex isn't a distraction?"

"It's an exception," she declared, "of the exceptional variety. I want to have a pure experience, Wren," Bella insisted passionately. "Just you and me, unfiltered, connecting beneath a galactic rarity. There's poetry in that. 'For one night only.' No rebroadcasts. A singular moment, and we exist here, now," she stressed, "with and within each other, the beauty of our union striving to match the beauty from above. And, ideally, surpassing it. I don't need pictures to remember this happened. It'll be seared upon my soul."

"Damn," he whispered. I think I'd follow her into battle ...

"We express things differently. That's okay. But this," she said, rubbing her body against his own, "is our common language. There are no barriers here."

Wren just held her paws in his, trying not to feel inadequate.

"That being said ... " Bella looked over her shoulder. The sun was to her back. "This is a bad angle. We're going to have to turn around. I can't see it from here." She got off him and twirled her fingers in a circle, an indication for him to change directions.

Wriggling and writhing, the male rodent did so. "Like, uh-"

"There. No, a little that way. Yeah. Good!"

Sighing heavily, Wren laid on his back and stared straight ahead. "Hey. Is it getting dimmer? I think it is." How long has that been going on?

"Definitely losing light," Bella said as she climbed back aboard. Once secure, she reached over him for her pants and whipped out her phone again.

"That thing is attached to you," Wren remarked.

She ignored him. Wren used his phone just as much. "First contact. Stage one. Actually started several minutes ago." She squinted and gave another quick, careful glance to the west. "Supposed to be a 'bite' taken out of the sun. Wish we had protective glasses. I'd love to get a closer look at _all_the stages. We'll only be able to safely gaze at the totality."

"Maybe if I had my camera, we'd-"

She lifted her hips and reached beneath them, grasping and squeezing his sensitive penis and pointing it toward her vulva. Once aligned, she sank upon it without further ceremony.

Wren gave a high-pitched squeak.

"You were saying?"

"I, uh," he went, not really answering. The fresh pleasure of penetration left him in momentary shock. Her slick, smooth walls were impossibly hot, and they suffocated his sensitive shaft to the point where he almost forgot his lungs had access to air.

"Wren." She rolled her hips in a steady circle. "Breathe."

Finally, he gasped, "Ah! Ah." He licked his lips. "Ah ... "

Bella laughed.

"What's ... what's so funny?"

"You make the cutest faces."

"As cute as yours?" he said, fondling her bushy-tailed ass. "Surely not."

"Don't make me-"

Wren's groping turned into a slap.

"Ooh! What was that for?"

"Teasing deserves teasing." He did it again.

"Ah!"

Eventually, he segued into softer kneading of those rump-cheeks, eyes looking past her to that tail. She wore it well. Even nature envied it, the air never ceasing to rustle through it. It wavered like a candle flame, hypnotic, full of promise.

"Don't tempt me too much." She groaned. "We may not make it to the totality."

"Now you worry about that?" He squeaked. "You could always dismount." Hopefully, she doesn't call that bluff.

She didn't. She just scoffed. "You're staying where you belong." She planted her paws on his chest, slowly lifting her hips, keeping them raised, and then lowering them. Slow and gentle. Until she found a rhythm, that is. "Mm, yeah." Her maw hung open as she bounced. "You're bucking," she observed.

"So?" he whined, wriggling beneath her. His cock glistened with her juices, dipping deep into her feminine passage, then reappearing and disappearing again, again, and again.

"Keep doing it," she huffed.

As their passion intensified, so did the moon's takeover bid. The sky was hemorrhaging light. Darkness spread, tinted gray and green instead of deepest black. This was no true night. Eerie and off-kilter, it was an imposter. Hungry, onrushing shadows raced across the horizon, accompanied by a false sunset.

Meanwhile, the crickets went quiet. Dead quiet. Even the songbirds petered off. The universe's left hand hadn't told its right hand what it was doing, leaving many of its residents blindsided, stunned into silence. Except for the two squirrels. They knew. But they couldn't be bothered into a state of reverence. They celebrated, instead. Loudly.

"Uhh. Uh," Bella grunted, riding her mate harder. Her soft pussy slapped against his loins, the squishy suction of their genitals creating uniquely lewd sound effects which only aroused them more. In fact, everything they did or thought was merely fuel to the fire. They were past the point of no return, building toward a mutual combustion. The moon was going to blot out the sun? They were going to burn brightly in its place. Motions that had started out with purpose became chaotic and rushed, downright desperate.

Wren clawed Bella's backside.

She frantically rubbed at her clitoris, swishing her tail.

Then, finally, when it seemed like they wouldn't make it, second contact. Totality. Full eclipse. The moon ascended to daylight's throne, donned in a crown of pearly, ghostly white. Ostentatious and ethereal, both squirrels couldn't help but turn their heads at the sight. At any other time, looking directly at the sun would've been dangerously blinding. But the moon made it possible. It had subdued the star. How could they resist paying their respects? How could the achievement not be seared in their minds?

Wren, for his part, completely understand how ancient civilizations might feel supernatural forces were speaking to them, maybe even punishing them. It was a jarring scene. But it was breathtaking, too. It induced a feeling of awe. It made him feel small, insignificant. This caused him to cling to his mate even harder, to double down on his efforts to please her.Through companionship, purpose. Through love, meaning. See, I can be eloquent! Even when I'm rutting. Or maybe because I am.

Bella, practically tipsy on the sheer abundance of sexual and spiritual auras being thrown off by her mate and the eclipse, threw her head back. She grinned widely. "Oh, yes, yes," she whispered, each exaltation merging into the next, until she was giving one long moan. "Yessssss!" There was such joy on her face. She was fully alive. All was ecstasy.

Wren, adoring that, adoring her, and having been stimulated beyond mortal capacity, felt his heart swell and his loins surge. He was going to lose it. Not soon. Now.Right now! He slapped her ass to let her know. The smack was audible.

She nodded sharply, taking him to a full hilt and steering her hips in hot, sloppy circles.

"Ah, hah ... ah," he panted, thrusting upward, his glans sizzling with sensitivity. It tingled. So good. The feeling spread down his shaft, into his body. Oh, boy! He trembled. Time seemed to freeze. It was coming. He was cumming! "Uhn!"

Wren burst. As he did, he saw stars. Actual ones, too, brought out by the sun's absence. He closed his eyes. He'd seen enough. What he was feeling was more important. And, besides, he just couldn't keep them open. The pleasure was too great. It was akin to being struck by lightning. Each jerk of his cock was a simultaneous jolt to his brain, which caused a cry, a moan, a gasp.

At a tight, trembling straddle, Bella's loins were wracked with muscular spasms. "Oh!" She arched upper body, breasts jiggling as she chittered like a feral beast. Her orgasm shuddered through her sex with the power of an earthquake, tremors of ecstasy filtering to her farthest reaches. "Oh, oh!" Eventually, she slumped forward, tongue visible and tail dangling to the side. Her whiskers were wilted. She looked like she'd been hit by a tidal wave.

Wren shivered weakly as her warm, wet sex milked his spent member. He couldn't move. Didn't want to. He just laid beneath his mate, his love, having given her everything. "Bella," he breathed, throat dry. He struggled to steady his breath. "Bella."

"I'm ... I'm still here, lovely," she finally replied. She kissed his chest-fur, the spot above his heart. "We did it."

Just in time, too. As soon as she'd announced their triumph, the moon's shadow began to pass beyond the sun. Third contact. The star's rays, angry at being usurped, lashed out brilliantly. Bright beams reached across the land, melting the shadows away. Slowly but surely, the sun began to reassert itself. Never mind it would set in another few hours anyway. It was back, and it wanted the whole world to know it. The crickets, willing themselves oblivious, began their chirping tunes again.

"That was incredible," Wren exclaimed.

"I told you it would be," the mahogany squirrel said, a far-off look in her eyes. "Mm." She raised back up and lifted his paw to her muzzle, kissing the back of it and inhaling his scent. "I'm punch-drunk," she explained. "Shaking."

"I'm so glad you're happy," he breathed. I'd rather see her smile than a dozen eclipses. It's so much more resonant to me.

She released his paw and planted her arms in the grass on either side of him, hunching over yet again and saying, "Thanks for playing along. Think we gave the sky a run for its money, there."

"Felt like it from my end," Wren concurred. He smiled boyishly, as if they'd just gotten away with something. Or eaten a forbidden fruit."You were right."

"'Bout what?"

"Removing the filter. Living in the moment." Making love in nature is so elemental! So fierce! I never realized what I was missing. He squeezed her hips. "I'm never going to forget this."

"Nor will I." She ran a paw through his head-fur. "I trust you don't feel old anymore?"

"No. I don't." The entire worry had slipped his mind entirely. She'd displaced it. Eclipsed it. He put a paw over her heart. "I love you," Wren said, direct and dripping with emotion. "Can I say that two times in one afternoon?"

"Mm, as many times as you want. I love you, too." Bella leaned down and touched her nose to his. They nuzzled for a moment, trading a few gentle kisses before she rolled off him and closed her eyes. She fought a yawn. "That took a lot out of me. I could fall asleep right here, right now."

"It's best that we don't," Wren advised.

"Probably right." Eyes reopening, she sat up and got to her knees.

Folding his paws behind his head, the walnut squirrel watched her recover her clothes. Her thighs were a matted mess. But, then, so were his loins. They'd both done a number on each other. He smiled, seemingly in no hurry to get back to civilization. He no longer felt as if the environment was exposing him. Perhaps it was cradling him, instead? But that's just the afterglow speaking. Right?"So, what do you do for a shower in the country after something like this? Skinny dip? Hose out back?"

A gleam in her eye, Bella secured her bra and brushed her tail across his face. "Don't give me ideas, Wren."

"Why not?" Playfully swatting her tail aside, he got up and collected his own clothes. If they're anything like what we just did, I doubt I'll regret it.
