#1 of Overtale: Life Above

It's been about fifteen years since the barrier was shattered, and the monsters underground were finally granted access to the surface above. Life has been pretty pleasant for most of those from below, but for a select few it's been pretty rough. Toriel started her new life as a teacher and did fine for a good year or two, but suddenly disappeared leaving frisk in Asgore's hands, alone. A simple note was left for the two of them explaining why she had to get away. Frisk had grown up and become interested in nature, mainly flowers, and spends a lot of time a top the hill where she once fell. Asgore takes care of the school's grounds, and works a landscaping job on the side, while spending many of his free hours by the phone hoping to hear from Toriel. However, A great many had decided to stay in the underground, due to a fear of rejection, and continued dislike of humans. These monsters below were ones to leave be, for they were not the kindest of folk. One day while Frisk was adoring the many colors atop her favorite hill, suddenly the colors began to fade to grey, literally. A black cloud formed above the hill where Frisk stood, and a large bolt of lightening shot straight down into the hill's opening, crashing into the bed of flowers below. Quickly the black cloud receded, and below laid a young teenage boy in a green, striped shirt. Curious, Frisk crawled on hand and knee to peer over the edge to see what wreckage had been created. Her eyes became blank for a moment of time before realizing who it was, and she threw herself down that hole landing only feet from the boy. She stared at him for a good 10 minutes, before she could dig up the courage to speak. "Asriel..?" She said softly toward to unconscious body that lay before her, as she moved closer. Slowly, but surely, the boy let out a great many coughs, and sat up screaming, as he stared off into the distance, afraid, and confused. Frisk walked slowly in front, and sat down to look at him. "Is that really you..? Or.." She said with a slight nerve in her voice, hoping for a specific answer. Asriel looks at his hands before returning a gaze, and very softly uttered "F-Frisk..? I uh.. I think it's me.. But I feel different..", and stood up slowly becoming even more confused with his own body. "What do you mean?" Frisk asked, concerned about him, and with a small tear he looked over to her. "The energy I felt before.. The last time I came back.. The dark energy.. I don't feel it this time.. It's gone.." he said as a very faint smile spread across his lips "I think I'm.. Okay..!".

Asriel, and Frisk carefully made their way through the Underground, on their way to Frisk's house, being careful not to let Asgore see him just yet. Frisk walked over to Asgore's study, and gave the door a knock. "Dad? I have something really important to tell you.. You won't believe it, either." she said, as the door opened and he laid a smile upon her. "What is it, Sweetheart? Is something the mat-" before he could finish, a small voice traveled across the hall, as Asriel poked his head out from the door frame. "D-Dad..? Is that you..?" he spoke, as Asgore got a ghostly look on his face, before even seeing who it was. Understandably, he knew it was home and stepped out in the hallway to look for himself, and Asriel did the same. They simply stared at eachother for awhile. Asgore was far too un-trusting of Asriel, and Asriel himself was far too guilt ridden to show any physical affection. Frisk stood between them to keep them separated for now, and explained what had happened to bring this event to life. The three of them made themselves comfortable in the living room, while also trying to process this fairly unexpected turn of events. "Where's mom..?" the boy asked, as he scanned the room for some sign of her presence. Asgore looked down to the floor, with quite the frown, "She's gone" he spoke quickly. Asriel misunderstood the reply, and began to cry, assuming the worst. "W-What..? Mom.. Mom is dead?" he began to shake, and sniffle as Frisk grabbed hold of his hands, shaking them a bit. "No, No! Azzy! Mom is fine. She's just not living here with us anymore. She went on a long trip." Frisk jumped in, trying to console him with the truth of what happened. Asgore stood up and made his way to his bedroom, where he would sleep in hopes that this was just a weird dream "Goodnight.. You two... I work early". Frisk nodded to her father, and looked straight into Asriel's eyes. "After we got out of the Underground, everyone but we forgot the Details of what happened with you coming back. Even still. Only a year later, mom started mourning you again as if it just happened. She wanted to get away from everything going on here, so she went on a trip awhile ago. Who knows when she'll be back". He nodded, and followed her as they both made their way to her bedroom to sleep the night away. Seeing as how there was only one bed, Frisk was kind enough to take the floor. With a sleeping bag of course. They both laid down, Turned the light off with a clap, and dozed off gently.

A low rumble began to build from outside the room's windows, causing small items on the dresser to vibrate and make their way to the edge before falling to the floor. Asriel watched as these things crashed gently into the wooden floorboards, before noticing that Frisk was no longer there, and proceeding to stand up, heading towards the door. Reaching for the doorknob in the dark seemed to be pretty difficult for Asriel, but he was so very frustrated "Where is the door..? F-Frisk?" he softly called out, unable to find the door. Suddenly, all the light in the room turned on, revealing there was in fact No door, No windows, No Lamps, only a Bed. He turned around to see what appeared to be his mother, Toriel. The strange thing about here, which caused him to be on edge, was that her eyes weren't the same as he remembered. Her eyes were mostly black, with a red ring, and a single spec of white. What was wrong with his mother, he wondered, as he backed up against the wall in fear. She slowly but aggressively paced her way toward him, raising a single hand as it burst into a magical flame. "M-Mom..? W-What are you doing?" He said softly as they both stared into eachother's eyes, and her hand came even closer to his throat. He screamed out for help, as her hand gripped his throat, and he began struggle. "Mom!! Stop!!" He screamed as he began to swing unsuccessful punches, in attempt to stop her from hurting him. Suddenly it became much harder to breath, before he finally passed out, being released by Toriel so he could fall to the ground. Asriel laid silent, and motionless as his mother walked away, disappearing into the darkness.
