#16 of Tinas Story

"Who was that?" Tina asked. She stood in the living room doorway, completely naked.

"Your Mom" Ray replied "I tried to tell her you weren't feeling well, but she insisted on coming over. With your Dad and all, I wasn't going to say no."

Tina shrugged, and paced around the floor a bit.

"Hon, aren't you going to get dressed?"

Tina shook her head 'no'.

"Too hot.Besides, she's seen me like this before." This time, Ray shrugged. He knew better than to argue with his wife, when she declared something with finality.

"You OK?" Ray inquired

"Not feeling well. guess you were right about the pizza."

"Can I make you a bed on the sofa?"

Tina shook her head 'no', and continued to walk aimlessly around the apartment. After about a half hour, Tina took the big comforter off the bed, and draggged it onto the hammock. She snuggled in, then covered herself with the fur throw against the November cold. She lay there, looking out into the night sky as she had done so many nights. In time, Ray came out to check...

"Hon, I'm a little worried..."

Tina was sweating, even as she pulled the covers up.Her face was contorted with pain.

"Just...a little food poisoning. Cramps. then she paused, looking at Ray with a sad, embarrassed look....

"I think I wet myself again..."

Ray pulled back the covers, and took a sniff of his wife's crotch. he then put his arms around Tina, stroking her hair tenderly...

"You didn't pee, Hon....Your water just broke. It's time. You're having a baby.....

Tina looked up, a little surprised.

'Really?"

"Really. I guess we'd better call the midwife. Where's her number?"

"In the address book"

Where?"

"The address book. The one by the phone in the kitchen."

The one we packed up and brought to the new house last week?

"Uh, yeah, I guess so...."

"Well, where else could the number be?"

Just then, Tina's tiny body was racked by a sharp contraction.

"Uhhhhhgggggg. "

It looked so bad, that Ray couldn't imagine the pain.

"How frequent are they?"

"Almost constant. Maybe a minute apart...."

"Oh, sh*t......"

Just then, the bell rang. Ray went to the door, to find Georgette Russel there.

"Mrs Russel, I think Tina's having the baby....."

Not missing a beat, she responded

"How far apart are the contraction?"

"Less than a minute"

"Then no time to waste. Where is she?"

"On the porch, on the hammock"

Georgette shook her head.

"I thought I'd seen it all. Bitches pick the strangest places to whelp. Go boil some water"

"I'd always heard that. What will she do with boiling water?" he asked, confused

"She's not doing anything. You're going to sterilize some cord, and a pair of scissors"

"Oh."

With Ray occupied, Georgette went out to join her daughter. She walked up, and kissed her forehead

"How you doing, dear?"

Tina grabbed her sleeve

"Momma, I'm so scared....."

"Don't be silly. Birthing pups is the most natural thing in the world. Done it hundreds of times."

Tina looked at her Mom

"Hundreds of times?"

"Of course. How do you think we had our babies before we were allowed in human hospitals? Had 'em at home. Friends and neighbors would help. Almost a social thing.....You were born in the bathtub. Didn't have any help when you were born. Had you all by myself.

Tina was shocked. Her mother had had her, at fifteen years old, delivering her by herself.

"All alone?'

"Uh huh. Your Dad was working, and my Mom was out. No big thing..."

But of course, it was. Tina began to understand a little of her Mother's life.

"Ray!' Georgette called "Get some towels, and sanitize them too."

Just then, Tina was gripped by a major contraction....

"Momma, I feel like I gotta....go to the bathroom"

Georgette looked down to see a liitle white bump appear from Tina's vagina.

"Go with it, Hon. Go ahead and push it out"

"Ray!" Towel. NOW!"

Ray rushed in with the towels he could find., just in time to see Georgette lift a tiny white pup from between tina's legs. Georgette gave it a quick look.

"There's your girl."

Georgette laid the pup on Tina's bare chest.

"Get me that cord and scissors"

Georgette directed Ray in tying and cutting the cord, while Georgette tended to the next pup.

About a half hour later, it happened again....

"Momme, I gotta...."

Georgette was already down below.

"It's alright, baby. Do what you need to do...."

Within minutes, a black head appeared, this one much larger....

"Arrrrggghhhhhhhhhh!"

"Again, dear. Almost done..." her mother soothed

And then there were two.

"Look at the size of this boy....."

Indeed, it was a very large black hybrid boy.

Ray was beaming. He took great care in taking care of his son's cord. Georgette looked at her grandchild...

"He looks....just like his grandfather did......Tears filled Georgette's eyes. "Good job dear, you have a beautiful family. You can relax now....

"I ARGHHHHHHH can't relax...." Tina replied

"You're just expelling the afterbirth. It's not as bad...." she assured her

"It's EVERY bit as @#$%^&*! bad!!! Tina replied, cursing like a sailor

"Momma! Help!" I gotta push....."

Ray took her hand, while Tina pushed as hard as she could....Georgette was down below, when....

"Oh my Lord....."

"UGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH....ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

"Again..."

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

"Good, girl, just one more, come on, one good one......

"YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHH!

Georgette's head popped up. She was pulling the afterbirth away from another tiny white pup. Georgette rubbed it, and sucked out it's mouth....

"There!" She watched the tiny hybrids chest rise and fall with each breath.

"The later pups can get stressed. She's fine, though.

"She" Ray repeated

"She" Tina repeated

"She" Georgette repeated. "Lucky that boy's a big 'un; he's got two sisters to compete with "

Tina lay exhausted on the hammock. Her feet still pressed against the porch rail from pushing

"Ray" Georgette ordered "Get the bed set up with clean sheets. And get us some washcloths to clean up....."

Ray left to do as he was told, leaving Tina and Georgette together.

"Come on, Momma, we need to get you and your pups inside, where it's warm...."

"I don't want to move" Tina said dreamily..."

"I know, Hon, but those pups need warmth, and the pups need you, so you better be where it's warm...."

"Momma?"

"What dear?"

Tina reached out to hug her Mom

"Thanks"

Ray and Georgette helped Tina clean up, and they carried her to the clean bed. Tina lay in the center of the bed, the three pups taking turns nursing at her two humanish breasts...

"Hmmmm. that's what happens when you mess with nature..."Tina shot her mother a look, and Georgette said no more.

Tina dozed, while the pups suckled.

Ray and Georgette kept vigil, all night, each checking in turn to make sure that mother and pups were doing well. On toward the wee small hours of the morning, Ray thought of something....

"Georgette, you said you needed to talk to us..." Ray inquired, remembering the reason for her visit.

'Oh, so I did.... Do you people believe in angels?

"We people?" Ray was a little off guard with her bluntness "Jews? We believe in the Old Testament. The Old Testament has angels, so yes, we believe in angels...."

"You'll think me a crazy old woman...."

"Try me." At this hour, Ray was prepared to listen....

The other night, I was in the hospital chapel. I had been there for hours; I spent the whole first night there. Toward morning, a young priest sits down with me. We talk about Stan, and the heart attack. I ask him to pray for Stan, and we do. Then he asks if there is anything bothering me. I tell him just that at the time, we were fighting over something. He asks me what. I tell him that Stan was upset, because he wanted me to be happy for you and Tina. Then the priest tells me that I can still give Stan his wish. When he told me that, I really thought hard. I prayed over it. Finally, I realised that it was the right thing to do. I looked up, and the priest was gone! I asked the only other person in the chapel, a nun, where did the nice priest go? She says that she didn't see anyone! Raymond, do you believe that God talks to people?"

Ray thought about the question.

"Sure. I believe that God cares about us, and that he communicates with us all the time"

"I think that priest was one of God's angels....."

Ray looked at his mother in law....

"I believe you are one of God's angels....."

Georgette fell into Ray's arms...

"I'm so sorry! I was so evil to you, and for no reason at all! I just hope that someday, you can forgive me....

"You were a blessing to us today. God knows what we would have done, had you not been here. It meant so much to Tina that you were here for her....."

Georgette went to dry her tears....

"Try to get a little sleep. I'll watch Tina and the babies"

Georgette lay down on the sofa, exhausted from the night's work. Ray lay a blanket over her. After she fell asleep, Ray checked on Tina, then walked out on the patio. The night was bright, as if there were a full moon. But there was no full moon. There was this one, bright star, shining down on the city that night. Ray saw it, and was humbled.

Ray would remember this night all the days of his life.
