The mightiest of all creatures

by

VVuffy

A little white wolf was sitting in a wheelchair in the garden. The darkness and silence of the night had its hold upon the world for quite some time, but sleeping was the last thing the young female wolf thought about. Her icy blue eyes were fixed onto the night sky, when a white flash and a sincere touch caught her attention.

"Aki, you should be in bed. Tomorrow is a big day." - said a male voice from behind the wheelchair.

Aki did not need to turn back to know who was standing behind her and petting her soft white hair. It was Wuffy, an adult male wolf, and this garden with the small lake where the moonlight was reflecting every night was his home. From the big house behind them he saw his little Aki starring at the moon with some distant sad look. A look that could be seen only in the eyes of a wolf.

Aki turned her head to Wuffy explaining all this. Even if the day was long and she was exhausted, she could not turn her eyes away from the round silver light high in the sky. It was strange, but Aki felt as if the sky would be looking back at her with that silver eye.

"I guess it can't be helped...let me tell you a little story..." - Wuffy pet her head one last time and then sat down on the grass.

Aki's ears immediately perked up in attention. She loved to listen to Wuffy's many stories and never missed a chance to do so, but there was still one thing left to do... Aki lifted herself from the wheelchair and sat down on the soft grass right between Wuffy's paws. The back of her head landed neatly on his warm fluffy chest. Now, in Wuffy's embrace, everything was ready for his tale to begin...

Once, very long ago, short after the first seed of life began to flow inside the time, the world was whole and it was a place of peace. Every creature in the world was guided by the four noble spirits of this world. Each of this noble spirits manifested in a mighty being.

The first to born was the mighty Manticore. She brought darkness upon the world and with it the peace and silence of the night. Stubborn and fearless, she possessed the noble spirit of courage.

To balance the dark and to bring laughter to the world, the majestic Griffon was born. First words were spoken and the first rays of light illuminated the world. Clever and free, he possessed the noble spirit of wisdom.

The life of a new one followed short after and the precious Unicorn came to the world. With endless patience and gentleness he watched upon the life and cherished it with all his might. Caring and helping, he possessed the noble spirit of kindness.

The last one to born was the powerful Dragon. She wrapped the world in her protective embrace and gave to every soul the power to walk its own unique path. Unrelenting and tireless, she possessed the noble spirit of strength.

With the four almighty spirits watching above the world, it became a place of wonders, a perfect world. Every creature possessed one or more noble spirits, but non was ever granted all four. Some possessed the strength, some the wisdom, and some the kindness to each other. When there was need, the leaders of their kinds came to pray to the almighty, to those who's noble spirit they were lacking and their needs have been granted. From the countless kinds, however, there was one which never stepped before the four almighty. It was a kind led by the great mother Moon. It was the kind of wolves. They, as the only ones, possessed all four of the noble spirits. By the origin, the wolves possessed only the courage, wisdom, and kindness, as a single wolf was simply lacking the strength. Yet, the great mother changed everything, as she assembled her kind into something completely new, in a pack, where the skills of one become the strength of many. This way, they never had the need to bow their proud backs to the four. Until one day...

A strange, unexplainable weakness befall the great mother of wolves. In this time of need, the mate of the great mother, a black wolf with a grayish ear, turned the look to the four and their endless might. Grey-ear brought the great mother before the four and prayed for her well being as the brilliance of her snow-white coat and the twinkle in her silver eyes begun to vanish into some unknown, distant place. The four almighty felt great honor, that the wolf kind came to ask them for their aid. Nevertheless, the sudden weakness, that befall the female wolf appeared to be unknown even for themselves. None of them really knew what to do, or after who's wits they should act. Each of the four wanted to be the one, to bring the so desired relieve to the great mother. And so, the quarrel begun among the four almighty creatures, and soon their ears became deaf to the begs of the male wolf with greyish ear. His cheeks were soaked and his vision was blurry from the countless tears he dropped for his beloved mate Moon.

Soon, the last glister of the great mother's silver eyes faded away and as the last breath escaped her lips, it was all too late. In that moment, something completely new and unknown has entered the world. Something dark and strange, and yet so tempting and peaceful; something that has appeared for the very first time...it was the Death. And so, Grey-ear has lost his beloved Moon; it was like a half of him would be suddenly missing...

The pale dark sky of the night was adding even more to this sorrowful moment. Not even this was enough to silence the quarrel between the four almighty, as if no power in the world could ever put an end to this. Not even the tears of blood that were falling from Grey-ear's eyes.

Only as the pain and grief have squeezed the wolf's throat, a mighty howl escaped his lips. The howl was long and heartrending, filled with all the love and grief at once. The whole world suddenly stood still. No creature dared even the slightest whisper and even the four almighty stood there silent in their shame. The howl spread throughout the silent night into the heart of one and every creature in the world. All of them found themselves sunk in the sound of his voice and no eye has remained dry. The fear from the Death, who wanted to claim them all right away, just as she did with Moon, was suddenly gone. The mighty howl seemed to last a lifetime, and exactly that was the time all have been granted thanks to the grey-eared wolf. All, including the almighty four, have bowed their backs before the mighty wolf...the mightiest of all creatures.

As the howl was replaced by silence once again, Grey-ear has found himself standing in the middle of the four, but this time he had no other wishes but one...to look into his beloved mate's eyes once more. The four almighty looked at each other and then something unbelievable happened. They used all their power at once to raise the great mother Moon onto the dark night sky and her silver eye appeared on the pale darkness. In that moment, the looks of the two lovers have found each other again and Grey-ear slightly whispered her name.

"Moon..."

To honor the great mother, every tear that was shed for her was risen onto the sky as well, to shine to her memory for all eternity.

Since that night, mother's eye is watching above her young ones, and the wolves are howling at the Moon to show their gratitude to her and to the wolf who was true to his mate to the very end.

As Wuffy's words faded away, Aki's icy blue eyes were fixed onto the silver eye in the sky surrounded with countless stars.

"All the twinkling lights...they're all tears the wolves shed for their beloved mother Moon?" - Aki was in awe.

Looking at the night sky, there was still something that was not leaving Aki's mind.

"Wuffy...the moon is but one; what happened to the other eye? Did the Death claim it with her body?" - came a young tired voice.

"Yes, she claimed the eye, but not for herself..." - came Wuffy's surprising answer.

When all bowed before the wolf with the grey ear, the Death stayed not entirely untouched by the mighty howl. As she saw the gifts that the four bestowed upon the world and the wolves, she desired to bestow her gift upon the wolves as well. And so, she did. It is said, that since that time, the life itself has a guardian in form of a wolf that bears the eye of mother Moon. The eye gifted by the Death herself has the power to make every dream possible, but as with all great gifts, this one comes at a great price as well. Every time the power of Moon's eye is used, somewhere upon the world, a wolf pays with life...

...but that is another story for another cloudless night.

Listening to Wuffy's voice and to his beating heart, Aki slowly fell asleep in the safest place she knew, in Wuffy's embrace.
