#1 of Ever Changing

This is a different perspective on my other story What We Soe. And I'm much happier with this one. So I will redo all the others (which shouldn't take to long) in a first person perspective. and i apologise for not updating as frequently as I should.

I sit here surrounded by bars while people stare at me. I hate them, all of them. If I could but escape these infernal bars I would claw as many as I could get at. But alas the bars are too strong and I too small.

I attempt to note the faces of all those that pass but there are far too many even to count. So instead I attempt to learn what it is that they say to me or more so about me. It is difficult but what else is there to do, other than growl in an attempt to intimidate the on lookers which seems to have the opposite of the intended effect.

Though my life is a scant few years it feels more like an eternity, seeming to be without end. Though as my day draws to a close I am removed from my prison and exercised so that I appear healthy. At the end of each session I am to be washed so that I am presentable for the viewing that I will be required to endure tomorrow.

From what I gleaned from what my onlookers say I mostly resemble a corsac fox, with my muzzle being slightly broader than a real one, and the characteristic long limbs. My tail though resembles a dragon's.

I think what really attracts these ignorantly spiteful creatures are my scales, spikes and horns. My scales are as black and white flecked as a clear moonless night. My spikes and horns are of the same color except for the tips that fade to the deepest darkest blue.

Then again it may be my eyes that so attracted my tormenters. My reasoning for this would be from the few chances I get to see my reflection in the shiny tin bowl the ‘master' uses to feed and water me. I always notice how my eyes seem to match if not out shine the color of the bowl.

The years pass and my life finally changes. The ‘master' has decided on a career change selling the troupe and moving into a mansion, taking me with him. I am now locked in a room with a bed, a toilet, window, and a door with a flap on it to slide plates in and out of.

For every day that passed I scratched a line into the wall. This lead me to the realization that every fourteen days four men would come into my room examine me then leave.

Chapter 2

It is approaching night fall and as I stare at the moon through my window I hear a faint thud come from a room a little ways down the hall. So I turn around and walk to my door and put an ear to it. As I am listening I hear doors open and close on nearly silent hinges. I then backed away from the door realizing that it was next to be opened.

The door opens slowly revealing a black wolf in an all black tight fitting garb. His golden eyes scan the room and was about to leave when he finally notices me.

"You want to leave" he asked.

I nod.

"Then follow me and quickly" he said leaving with me close at his heels. We snuck through the complex till we came to a room with an ornately carved door. "All right pup I have to go and do something in that room wait here and watch to see if any one comes I will be right back." With his words in mind I start to scan the halls searching for sound or movement.

I hear the slight whoosh of the door as the wolf exits the room a mere two minutes later. Upon his approach he says "Alright time to leave." And with that he flings me on his back so that I am riding him like I was no more than a piece of luggage.

I can't see much of the building as all I can see is the back of the mysterious wolf's head. Before I could even attempt to make out any more of my surroundings we were over the wall that encompassed the mansion and into the mass of buildings that surround the complex my ‘master' calls home.

The wolf didn't stop for a minute weaving in between the houses and the occasional crowd when we had to cross a larger street. It only took mere minutes, or at least seemed to, to reach the edge of the large city and to steal away into the forest.

Even after running in to the forest he didn't slow down or stop for another 10 minutes. When he did stop he said "All right pup time to get off. We'll be staying here the rest of the night and be heading out at dawn."

I nod softly. After receiving my confirmation he pulled some dried meat out of his bag and threw some at me, and said "Eat."

Shortly after he finished his meal he lay down and went to sleep, most likely expecting me to do the same. I have never needed sleep before. It would always disturb the ones that awoke at a late hour to do something or other.

I watch the wolf sleep trying to figure out why he was in the ‘master's' house, why he offered to take me with him, and ,though I know it to be folly, where he is taking me.

There is something on his brow. I'm not sure what it is but it seems to be a ridge just above his eye. Which tells me he is one of my kind, he is a Daemon. I wonder how hard his life was compared to mine. He most likely didn't go through anything too comparable to what I suffered for his ‘disfigurement' isn't too obvious.

After finishing my observations I turned my eyes to the stars. I sat there the rest of the night or at least most of it as the wolf woke up before dawn. Though I use the term ‘woke' lightly as he didn't so much as wake up as open his eyes, similar to blinking.

"What are you staring at" he asks noting that I am watching him again "I thought you would still be asleep."

"I was curious about you...Daemon" was my reply "and sleep is not a thing I required."

"What makes you think that I am a Daemon?"

"The ridge that is on your brow is what tells me that you are what I know you are" was my flat reply.

"Very observant of you, the Shadows seem to know what they are doing, as always. And what do you mean you don't need sleep, it's a base necessity for everyone" he stated a little incredulously.

"Then that means I can assume that I am not everyone" I replied again in a flat tone.

"Well you can say that again."

"Why would I do that?"

"It's a figure of speech pup" he mumbled. "Any way, do you have a name?"

"No I do not. Every one just called me demon" replied with a little vehemence coloring my normally dry tone.

"Hmm well I'll just call you pup for now seeing as you hate that name. Any way we'll eat some thing and then head out we need to get to our destination before tomorrow morning."

"And what would your name be?"

"Shade" was his simple reply.

He then reaches into his pack and threw some dried jerky at me, which I promptly consumed, while scanning the tree line.

When I was finished eating he stands up and walks to the edge of the clearing. "Come on we will need to move quickly to where we are going on time."

And we were off. We walked for hours and noon came and went.

"You surprise me pup. I didn't think you would be able to keep pace with me like this" Shade suddenly cut into the silence.

"Well the ‘master' kept me fit and presentable so he could make as much money as he could" I reply with obvious scorn and malice. After that the conversation died and was not rekindled.

When night approached we didn't slow down or stop. I was vaguely surprised considering he had said that everyone else needed sleep.

"Don't you think we should stop? I know you need sleep" I say.

"No just a couple more hours and we'll be there" he replies simply.

So on we trudge. After two hours, I think, we suddenly turn into the forest that the path cuts through. And another two hours later, the sun had set an hour and a half ago, we approached an enormous temple.

"There it is the Temple. Simply but aptly named" he said as we approached the gargantuan building.

As we entered the building it felt like I was being swallowed by a beast. The inside seems even larger than the outside. Though the place is large it is nearly empty.

There are eight columns, four to each side. They are three men high, two arm lengths around and spaced four men apart. In between each column hangs a tapestry each one was different from the rest. Starting on the right the first one depicted a sword with a dragon's head chappe with backwards sweeping horns as the Cross-guard. The pommel was the dragon's claws clutching a diamond and the grip as the arms. The next tapestry was a simple cat's eye, but as I look closer I can see some whorls and intricate waving lines for the iris. Then a picture of a very fit man, with tattoos all over his body depicting a wolf intertwined with a snake.

On the left there was one that had a beautiful violet orange tinted rose with a burnished gold stem with white tipped thorns. The next tapestry had a shield with an incredibly beautiful lion that seemed to be made of gold, though unlike the other tapestries this one showed the object within to be damaged and worn instead of vibrant and new. The last one was most peculiar as it depicted me shrouded in shadow, with some kind of creature sitting next to me. I can't tell what the thing was as it is as it is even more shrouded than I am.

The ceiling itself was a sight to see. It was a gruesome yet somehow beautiful picture of a battle with all the men's swords drawn some having already been used to cleave some ones head from their shoulders. Others were blocking blows that would almost certainly mean death.

After taking in all there was to offer in the architecture I noticed three others in the room with shade and myself. After getting half way across the room the group notices us and a cougar, if I'm not mistaken, turns towards us.

"Oh, look Shade's back. And he brought dinner with him" the cougar said. I just give him the stare I gave everyone who thought it funny to taunt me. This seemed only to make me more of a target as he continues with "It looks like our dinner has a bit of spunk." When he finished his sentence he put his hand on my head and my first, and normal, reaction was to quickly duck back and jab forward to bite his hand.

Now a normal person would do only a little damage but with my dagger like teeth I put twelve holes in his hand. That would have been it but he pulled his hand straight back before I could let go and so I strip his hand of most of its skin exposing the bones beneath. I just spit out the skin and muscle while one of the men that the cougar was talking to just stared at me while the other was trying, and failing, to consolidate the injured man.

Shade chuckles and says "And apparently the dinner bites back. That's what you get for picking on an unknown. Go see the healer it's not that serious."

The man that was staring at me seemed to snap out of whatever trance he was in and asked "What is his name Shade?"

"Well he doesn't like the name he was given so I'm just calling him Pup for now" responded Shade while I continued to glare at the three of them. "Come on Pup time to meet the Shadows. Here's a rag wipe your face."

After that we proceed toward the back of the temple where a door is just laying on the floor. Upon approaching the door it opens and out steps a corsac fox. When I saw the fox, I bared my fangs and growled.

"Pup what is wrong" Shade asked.

When he spoke it seemed to snap something and I immediately stop, much to the fox's relief. When he saw that I had calmed down the corsac asks Shade "Who is this and why did he growl at me?"

"This is Pup, for now, and I have not a clue" he responded. "Why did you growl?"

I stared at my hands for a second before saying "My mother was a corsac, I think."

Realization dawns on both of them and Shade said "So being abandoned did leave a mark on you." I decided not to respond to that.

"Well I'm sorry to hear that. Now that you'll be in the Brotherhood you won't have to worry about that. But Pup is such a strange name."

"The name I had in my former troupe was Demon. But I hate that name" I said before Shade could respond.

"Oh yeah I remember hearing about you. After you were taken the troupe went under" the corsac said.

"Good I hated those people, always grumbling about life not being fare."

"Sounds tough kid but make no mistake this life is much tougher" the corsac warns. "Well I have to get going. See you Shade."

"Good hunting Silver" Shade replied. "Let us continue Pup." And so we proceed down passing through the door into the bowels of the earth.

After what felt like several hours the stairs level off and we are in a large hallway with doors on either side. It didn't take as long as I thought it would to reach the end of the hall.

At the end there I see a tall simple oak door. "Beyond this door lies the Shadows. You will either find life or death I cannot go with you for only those new to the order or the leader can enter this place. Now go on I will wait here for your return."
