#10 of Operation: Liberation

These last few weeks were hell after I left my unit in Atlanta. My squad, Silver One, moved on to an FOB in Virginia, where allied forces were massing for an assault to take back the White House. Us, as well as the Canadian Special Forces and the able-bodied SEAL team members, are a part of the offensive, restocking on ammunition as well as gear. The images of dead and wounded clouded my mind, and I found myself having a difficulty of resting as well as trying to sleep. Flashes of my former squad dying haunted me, as well as all the Russian soldiers that have died by my paws. I know I'm doing my job as a soldier.... But am I doing it right?

The allies have gained a lot of ground since the last time I've actually been around a functional news radio. The Canadian military was coming from the North, on the other side of the Capitol and waiting for the go ahead to strike. The Australian, Korean, Japanese, and the United States Marines from the West Coast has effectively beaten back the enemy, taking prisoners and reclaiming California, Washington, Nevada, and any other western state from the aggressors. From the south towards Mexico, the Mexican army and other Central American armies pushed up and demolished the Russian invaders, giving us complete control of the United States..... All but Washington D.C.

"We have them cornered!" I could hear Sergeant Nighthawk's voice over the sound of the surrounding gunfire. Silver One, as well as Warrant Washington's small team and a few Navy SEALS, advanced into the burning city from Lincoln Memorial after the whistle was blown for us to advance.

We had one objective: To get to the White House and to President Firestar, as well as her Cabinet and any other government official we could save. It sounded easy for us to do since the bulk of the allied armies were fighting the majority of the Russians, but that didn't mean that we had it easy. Bullets flew over my head as I ran for cover, looking for visible targets I could shoot. I mean honestly, Atlanta wasn't as bad as I thought it was, compared to what I'm experiencing from this battle.

Dead civilians littered the streets, their bodies either burned or decomposing. As we advanced through the Constitution Gardens and towards The Ellipse of the White House's southern lawn, I just saw more and more bodies, now most of them being police, Secret Service, or FBI agents. From what Sergeant Nighthawk has been telling me, he hasn't heard from the President since he grabbed me at the CDC in Atlanta, and he was worried that the White House must have been overrun. To our luck, the President was already moved to an underground shelter inside the White House, which was probably better than just letting her hide in her room.

"Target right!" I yelled out as we moved up the small hill, aiming at a few Russian soldiers behind sandbags. Victory was near and this war is almost over.....

*Hours Later*

"You're good, Madam President," a Secret Service agent brushed off the tattered, beaten up female jackal, who wore a black tuxedo. You know, for a beaten up set of clothes, this anthro can still make it look professional.

"Good evening, my fellow allies and Americans," the soft, sensitive voice of the President spoke at a podium. Silver One were on the steps of the White House with her, her podium having multiple microphones for her to speak in to. Military personnel and a few milita-civilians stood at the bottom of the steps, listening to the President speak.

"I am Vice President Nya Moonfire," the female spoke, her voice quivering a little bit, "and I am sad to announce that President Luna Firestar has died due to her wounds sustained during the Siege of Washington D.C." I stood to the President's immediate left, holding my weapon in the low ready. Not only was former President Firestar dead, most of Congress and the Senate died as well, most likely from the initial strikes on the building.

"However, we must not forget the sacrifices she has made for the American, Canadian, Mexican, and allied countries as a whole," Vice-President-Now-President Moonfire, continued to speak, "she has worked hard to make sure America and her allies didn't fall, and I pledge to do the same. Thanks to our brave armed forces, we have beaten the invaders and reclaimed the United States as a whole." Cheering could be heard in the crowd of hundreds.

"Thank you, every one of you," the President was starting to tear up, "for not abandoning hope, for fighting to the last breath, for rising up against the attackers. Efforts to rebuild are now in progress across the United States, as well as more aid from our allies. Thank you, fellow allies, we are forever in your debt." More cheering came from the crowd as I accompanied the President back into the White House, the rest of the squad and Secret Service agents following.

The war was finally over.
