Chapter 6

Bells, Bells, Bells

October 25, 1891

Sunday again, and it was a beautiful day. After Church everyone wanted to go off to play. Lilly hurried off with her friends. Bobby, Will, and the Warren boys ran off to fetch Charlie and go play. Banit wanted to find Grace and Nessa. I told her to go but to be back by dinner. She hugged me and was off. She tripped as she passed though the door. This is the first time in a long time that it's just been Ma and I. She wanted to hear about Grace and Nessa, so I told her how they met and all. Ma was happy that Banit finally got some friends.

It was a bit of a lazy day. Ma and I mainly just cleaned around the house and relaxed. Mrs. Harcourt came by to visit. She and Ma go way back. I made some tea for them and gave them the house. I just lazed about the park. I like it here. It's always quiet and there's a tree here that is perfect for sitting on.

Banit was all excited about spending the day with Grace and Nessa. She said that Nessa is a bit forgetful and clumsy too. She walked into a sign and when she bought something she forgot it and left it at the counter. Banit also said the Grace is very reliable and takes care of Nessa. She went on and on about them and what they did today. It was great to see her so happy. Ma smiled and laughed at Banit's story.

Post script: What a great day.

October 26, 1891

A letter arrived for me today. It said that the stove I ordered is on its way and should be arriving by the end of the week. Great! Ma's going to love it!

Really other than the letter today was rather boring. Banit ran off to play with her friends. Lilly and Bobby did the same. I really don't have anything to write about. Oh, I finished my book. I guess it's time to start on another. I'll get one tomorrow.

October 27, 1891

Today started much like yesterday. I got me a new book and was walking home when I spotted Banit with Grace and Nessa. They were heading to our house. I joined them. Grace is a lot of fun. She's always has a smart remark about something. We'd just about gotten home when Nessa wandered off. She was chasing a butterfly! Didn't say a word, just took off. She caught it but accidentally crushed it. She sat there about to cry when she saw a grasshopper and she started chasing it. Grace stopped her and reminded her why they came. She smiled and said "Tea party with Banit, when?" I couldn't help but laugh. I have to wonder about that girl. I helped them set up in the back yard and left them to it. Given that Grace is the only one there that can function properly. I showed her where we keep the tea. She thanked me.

I love Nessa! She is hilarious. Bobby and Lilly came home from school and when Lilly heard that Banit was having a tea party she wanted to join. She walked out back and was about half way to the table when Nessa spotted her. Nessa stood up, said "Awww" and ran over to hug Lilly, who quickly turned and ran. Nessa chased her down and caught her. She picked Lilly up, hugging her and telling her how cute she is. Lilly struggled but it was in vain. She couldn't break free of Nessa. Grace yelled at Nessa to put Lilly down. Nessa turned and carried Lilly to the table and sat down with her in her lap. Nessa held Lilly there cuddling her. Grace apologized to Lilly saying that Nessa loves small cute things. While she won't show it outwardly, Lilly actually loves getting attention, especially when someone pets her and tells her she's cute. Lilly struggled a little but it was somewhat obvious that she was just pretending. I left them alone.

I asked Bobby if he'd like to play some games or something but he was busy drawing the tea party. Honestly I got a bit bored so I read my book some. About an hour had passed when I heard a ruckus out back. When I checked Nessa had fallen over backwards with Lilly in her lap and accidentally pulled Banit down with her. Lilly was making a big fuss about getting up, but Banit was on top of her and tangled up with Nessa who looked like she had no idea what was going on. I hurried over to help and lifted Banit up. I was about to help Lilly when I saw what she was fussing about. She'd just about slid up out of her dress and was stuck in the neck. Her breasts were showing. I picked her up and pulled her dress back into place but she started crying and ran up to her room. Nessa stood up and was starting over to apologize but Grace stopped her. I reached down for the chair and realized that the back feet had sunk in some soft ground and tipped over. I took Nessa upstairs and tried to explain what happened to Lilly. She was too upset. Times like these she needs to settle down before she can listen. I told Nessa to just go back to the party but to move her chair. Grace said that it'd be best if they left. It was still early so I told Banit that she can go with them if she wanted. She smiled and thanked me. I walked them out.

I was wondering where Bobby had run off to but he never moved. He was so focused on his drawing that he didn't even see them leave. That kid...jeez.

Lilly didn't come down for dinner so it was only Banit, Bobby and I. I did leave a plate by the door for Lilly. I didn't know what to do about Banit as Lilly had locked the door. So I offered to let her sleep with Bobby and I'd sleep on the couch. I checked on Lilly before bedtime and saw that the plate was empty. I knocked on the door and asked if I could talk with her. She unlocked the door. She was still pouting. I sat on the foot of the bed and told her that it was just an accident and that it wasn't Nessa's fault. She said, "That's not what I'm worried about. I got mad at Nessa and probably made her feel bad. I'm an awful person." She said that she realized what happened after I told her earlier and she felt bad for calling Nessa a dimwit. I told her that the only way she's going to feel better is to apologize to Nessa, but that Nessa is a bit dim. Lilly laughed. She said that she's still mad at me though. She's mad that I didn't listen to her and stay away like she told me too and that I saw her breasts. Well, I didn't hear her. When she gets worked up like that she talks to fast for me to understand. I patted her head and said, "I don't see the problem. If you recall, I've already seen you naked." She hit me and called me a jerk. I ran off laughing as she bombarded me with her pillow. I got about half way down the hall when she yelled at me, "And don't remind me of that ever again!" I stuck my tongue out at her and winked. She puffed out her cheeks and slammed the door. Guess she's feeling better. I went downstairs and now I'm about ready to sleep on the couch.

Post Script: Lilly can be such a pain in the neck sometimes but I wouldn't trade her for the world.

October 28, 1891

Today started quietly and normally, with the exception that Lilly was still angry with me. Kids are off to school and Banit to her lessons.

Just before noon a messenger came to tell me that there was a large heavy crate at the dock for me. That should be the new stove. I went to the docks and saw that it really was a very large box. They still had loading straps on it and said that if I'd get strong wagon that they'd use their crane to lift it. I went and rented the strongest wagon and a pair of mules to pull it. I got the crate loaded and while it was slow going I managed to get it to the house. Once I returned the wagon and mules I looked for the plumber I'd talked to before. He said that he'd be by at the end of the day to measure and find out how much pipe he'll need and that he'll get to work running it first thing tomorrow morning. Oh, his name is Walter. I think I forgot to mention that earlier. I returned home in time to find Banit and the kids climbing all over the crate. Lilly was very excited to see it but I thought it'd be best to leave it alone until tomorrow. We were talking about it when the door bell rang. It was Grace and Nessa. They'd come to apologize to Lilly. I no sooner turned to call Lilly over than she came rushing by and hugged Nessa. Lilly apologized for getting mad at her and everything. Nessa looked more confused than she normally does.

Bobby and I left the girls to do their things. Bobby and I retired to the back porch and played some games. Found out later that the girls finished their tea party.

At about six, Walter came by to measure everything. We then opened the crate and he found were the gas line goes into the stove. He wrote many measurements down and satisfied he shook my hand and said that he'll be by first thing in the morning but that the stove should be working in time for dinner. Lilly was very excited to finally see the stove. Honestly I was too. I've never seen one before and I'm curious as to how it works. Banit asked if Grace and Nessa could stay for dinner. I said "Sure! They can help us say goodbye to the old stove that way!" Banit and Lilly got busy on dinner so the rest of us retreated to the living room. Nessa pulled Bobby into her lap and petted his head. I heard no complaints from him. I think he enjoyed it. Grace saw that too. She said "Uh-oh Nessa seems you may have found yourself an admirer." Bobby blushed and tried to wiggle free but the more he struggled the tighter she hugged him. He eventually gave in and was soon enjoying her petting again.

Dinner was great. Banit cooked some beef dishes for us while Lilly covered the vegetables. We had a nice dinner party and afterwards Banit and I walked Grace and Nessa home.

Lilly had finished the dishes by the time we returned and was getting Bobby ready for bed. I think tomorrow's going to be a busy day so I thought that I should turn in early myself.

October 29, 1891

Walter showed up bright and early at eight. I told him I'd make myself available if he needed any help. He thanked me but it didn't look like he needed much help. Ma and I watched him work and mainly just stayed out of his way. By noon the pipes were in and all that was left was to bring in the stove. Now Walter is a stout man, a strong beaver. He volunteered to get one side if Ma and I would get the other, Ma laughed. She took one side while Walter took the other and I helped Walter. He couldn't believe it when Ma lifted her side without trouble. Banit wanted to help so we had her hold the door open for us. The three of us were able to get it inside. I'm not sure but I think Walter likes Ma. After we got the stove positioned he was suddenly very sweet to her. It's almost a shame that she towers over him, and that he's married. Walter got to work and had the stove hooked up and ready to light. It took us a minute but we figured it out. Ma loved that it got hot instantly and that the room didn't heat up like it did with the wood burning one. We all liked that there wasn't any ashes to clean up. Walter was impressed as well. He said that his anniversary is coming up and that he's thinking of getting his wife one as well. We talked about it for a while and I paid him as he left. He told us to put soapy water on all the joints every now and then to check for leaks but that it shouldn't be a problem with as much sealant as he used. We saw him off and Ma was excited to use her new stove. I didn't see it at first but the oven even has its own built in thermometer. That should make baking and cooking much easier. I read the manual and it said that if the gas isn't working or if we'd like some extra heat in winter that we can burn coal like we do for our furnace. I doubt we'll need to do that but that's a nice option. Now that we don't need that wood box we have some more room and I won't have to chop wood for it anymore. Ma and I carried the old stove and wood box out to the street and put a "Free" sign on it. Hopefully someone that needs one will find it and take it with them. Some of the neighborhood ladies watched the commotion and came by to see the new stove. They sounded like a gaggle of hens. I couldn't take it so I escaped to the front porch. I was just in time to see Lilly and Bobby walk up. Lilly was very excited to see the new stove. Bobby was curious as to how it worked. Ma was more than happy to show them. I relaxed on the porch and wasted the rest of the day.

We had a large dinner. Lilly and Ma were very excited to use the new stove. They said it was so much better than having to light a fire each time and get the kitchen so hot. I have to say that it looks better and since the kitchen is cooler the rest of the house is too. I rather enjoy it.

Post script: I didn't plan on it but today just happened to be Ma's day off. Lucky I guess.

October 30, 1891

With everyone gone I had a chance to play with that stove some. I cooked some bacon and eggs for Banit and I. I never liked cooking as I just got too hot, but now I don't mind. Amazing what people can come up with. I wonder what's next.

Banit ran off to see her friends and I wandered about. I was walking by the train station when I heard someone calling me. I turned and saw Cora. She came all the way from Chicago! She ran up and hugged me. I was a bit surprised and asked her why she came. She replied, "I got your message and wanted to come down and help. I would have written but I wanted to make it a surprise! SURPRISE!" We laughed and talked. She'd just arrived last night and was staying in a nearby hotel. I thought that I'd show her around today and so I borrowed a two wheeled cabriolet and we took a tour of the city. She loved our "small" city. I took her to lunch and there she mentioned wanting to meet Ma and to see if she could help with the books. She said that she went to school for that and that there's an easy way to do them that she could show Ma. We left for The Pasture after lunch. Ma was in her office working hard on the books and didn't like me bringing yet another girl over to her. Cora introduced herself and said that she was only sticking around for a little while and wanted to help. Ma huffed but let Cora see the books. It didn't take Cora long to have things figured out. She said that Ma was doing things a very hard way and that she was wasting a lot of money doing it that way. Ma looked surprised but watched her work. Cora went on to set up a new book and showed Ma where everything went and how to do the calculations. Cora said that if Ma would let her work there for a week that she can have all the books straightened out for the year. Ma thought about it and said "You're hired" and patted Cora on the back knocking the air out of her. Ma went out to stretch her legs a bit and Cora was fast at work. I told he that I was going to return the Cabriolet and that I'll be back soon. I never got a response. She was very wrapped up in her work.

I'm writing this next part the next day. A lot happened.

Cora work diligently until the evening when I finally stopped her. She was tired and in need of a break. So I told her to sit back, relax and just watch the show. She had a good seat upstairs. I told Ma that I'd pay for whatever Cora wanted tonight. She said "Like hell, it's on the house." Ma is very relieved to have a break for a change. Lilly arrived fairly early and went to the dressing room to change and get ready. Cora was a bit surprised to see such a young girl here. A bit later Banit came with Grace and Nessa so that they can hear Lilly sing. They were a bit nervous about being in a saloon so I told them that they can stay upstairs if they'd prefer. They agreed and so I pulled out a few spare chairs for them to sit on and introduced Cora to them. I had just got them seated when Lilly walked out in her stage dress. Nessa lit up and made a big fuss over how adorable Lilly is and hugged and squeezed her. I think Lilly is beginning to like it. I had to separate them and escorted Lilly to the stage. She loves it when people fuss over her. Ms. Fellows starting things with a simple happy song to get everyone's attention, but when Lilly finally opened up and started singing Cora, Grace, and even Nessa's mouths were agape in surprise. By the time Lilly got into a dance number Joey and Alice were on stage and drawing attention. I asked Cora to dance and we hit the floor. Cora is a decent dancer. She's nothing like Joey but she can hold her own. Eventually I was dancing with Banit, Grace and Nessa in turn. Grace didn't know how to dance but she's like Banit and so is light enough that I can pull her around easily enough, so I taught her that way. Nessa however....She's about as graceful as a brick, ungainly and heavy footed. She dances like Ma but with less balance. We had fun though. At the end of the show, Nessa charged Lilly and hugged her making a big fuss over her singing. She never put Lilly down and carried her back upstairs to the dressing room. Banit, Cora, and I laughed and laughed. Grace was nagging trying to free Lilly but to no avail. Lilly made a big fuss over needing her privacy to change and was finally able to wiggle free of Nessa and pushed her out the door. Nessa stood there blinking for a few seconds while Grace continued to nag at her. Nessa looked down at Grace and smiled. Grace looked terrified and yelled "Oh, no, don't you dare!" and turned to run only to be caught by Nessa. Nessa sat down and petted and cuddled Grace who was very annoyed. I almost lost it. I could have died laughing and I wasn't the only one. All the fuss drew a lot of attention and many of the saloon patrons were laughing hysterically. Even Ma was tearing up from laughing. Grace was so mad but had given up and Nessa was so happy! Oh I wish I could paint you a picture of it! Lilly snuck out of her room and hid behind me for protection from Nessa but Nessa was in her own world and was enjoying herself immensely. It took a bit of work but we got Grace freed and we left. I walked Cora back to her hotel while Banit's bunch took Lilly home. I didn't make it back until morning. Cora was feeling...affectionate, so was I.

Post script: Nessa is hilarious.

October 31, 1891

All hallows eve, Ma never likes today. She says that ghosts come out tonight and so has forbidden Lilly and Bobby from going outside after dark and told Lilly to take the night off. I never understood that. She was the same way with me when I was young. I told them that if they'd like, we could have a small party and they could invite their friends, Banit too, but only if they behave. I told Cora about it and invited her over, but she declined saying that she doesn't do well with children. Oh well. Bobby was very excited and wanted to know if Charlie could come as well. I agreed. I'm hoping that Grace and Nessa come. Nessa will probably be busy hugging one of the kids all night but Grace would probably help keep things under control. She seems reliable like that.

Lilly, Banit and I went shopping early this afternoon for snacks and decorations. We spent most of the afternoon decorating and getting things ready for the party. Grace and Nessa showed up early asking if they can help. Honestly I was glad to see Nessa. She's tall enough to not need a ladder to hang the streamers. We got things done in time for the kids to show up. First up were Will and the Warren boys. They live nearby and were fast playing some of the games with Bobby. Lilly's friends came together as a group and that one cat winked at me and waved cutely. Charlie was last but was certainly loud enough to draw everyone's attention. Mrs. Bancroft looked almost relieved to drop Charlie off. She thanked me for letting her stay the night. This was going to be interesting.

So the party was great! We had plenty of snacks and refreshments and lots of games to play. Lilly started singing some up beat dancing songs and got everyone up and dancing around, that's when I saw the most hilarious sight. Charlie didn't like that she was forced to wear a dress and so she took it off along with her shoes, stocking, and panties. Nessa saw her and I'm guessing was trying to get her dressed again and was chasing her around. Charlie was having fun being chased and eventually Nessa was having fun chasing her. So let me see if I can describe this. One stark naked little fox girl running around with nothing on but the biggest smile being chased by a six foot wolfhound who was also smiling, Lilly and her bunch were shocked. Bobby...Bobby and his friends couldn't care less. I'm guessing they're used to seeing her naked. I made an effort to pick up Charlie's clothes but as I was bent over I was suddenly tackled from the side. Charlie was standing over me laughing calling out "I WIN Mista! I defeated ya!" She looked over said "Uh-oh" and jumped off of me. Nessa was still trying to catch her and tripped landing on top of me. Charlie quickly jumped on top of her "I win ag'in" laughing wildly. I'd be more upset but I thought it was funny. Nessa reached up and caught her by the leg. She carried Charlie over to the couch, held her down and dressed her. Charlie fought the entire time. No sooner did Nessa stand her up that Charlie took off running again throwing her clothes wherever she could laughing the entire time. After another couple of rounds of this Nessa gave up, Charlie spent the rest of the night naked. Ha! Will and the Warren boys were probably the best behaved out of the bunch.

Other than a naked little girl the rest of the party was how you'd expect it. By midnight though, it was time for bed. Lilly and her friends stayed in her room. I gave Banit's group my bed. Bobby and I set up down in the living room. We gave Charlie the couch thinking that since she's a girl after all, that she'd like something soft to lie on. The rest of us slept on the floor with some blankets. I woke at about 2am and saw that Charlie had moved from the couch and was cuddled up with Bobby, still naked though. I thought that was a bit indecent so I quietly and carefully put her panties back on her and managed to get one of Bobby's undershirts on her without waking her. I left her where she was though. Ma came home soon thereafter and was smiling at all the kids sleeping there. If only she saw what happened earlier. I don't know if she realizes that Charlie is a girl yet. I'm not going to say anything. I'll just play dumb.

Post script: As I was going back to sleep I saw that Charlie stirred a little in her sleep. Bobby hugged her and she settled down. Strange now that I think about it, Bobby is very quiet. He tends to stay to himself unless he's around people he knows. Charlie couldn't be more different. She's loud and doesn't know a stranger. It's a wonder how they're drawn together.

November 1, 1891

Most of the kids that came over go to our Church so they'll come with us there and leave with their families. Charlie is the only exception. She'll have to go home first. Her family is Catholic so they go to a different Church. Speaking of Charlie, she sleeps like a rock. When we finally got her to wake she looked down, saw that she was wearing clothes, jumped up and yelled, "AHHHH! My clothes are haunted! How'd they get back on me?" After which she quickly stripped. Ma saw this and ran after her to get her dressed. Everyone else just watched. Bobby, I think has a good handle on her. He held up her dress and said "This is such a pretty dress. I'd like to see you wear it Charlie." She stopped, blushed and put it on, minus her panties of course. I see! She'll do what Bobby asks her to do. Her parents were shocked to see her returned fully dressed. Ma had a few words for them. I don't think she's ever seen such a wild child.

I talked with Jr. today after Church. I had almost forgotten about the wedding. I need to make some plans for him. Being the first Sunday of the month, we had the usual luncheon that I had to make an appearance at but I didn't stick around for very long. I left in search of places to have a bit of a "farewell" party. Two weeks that's all I have, two weeks. Therefore I need the following places. 1. A good place to have dinner 2. A place to drink, and 3. A place with dancing girls in various states of dress. Luckily I know lots of places for all of those. I think I'll keep him away from Mrs. Lulu White and the Mahogany Hall. I don't think Ms. Fellows would appreciate otherwise. Those girls are very eager to lighten you of your trousers and your wallet.

I'm down on Bourbon Street now. Lots of saloons, so I think we can crawl from one to the next. We may just eat at a regular place before we head out. I still haven't found a decent place with dancing girls. I'll look again later this week as today is Sunday and everyone is closed.

I returned home to find Ma and the girls playing with the stove. I think buying that was a good idea. That's when I was attacked from behind. Cora! She snuck up on me. She said that Ma's offered her a full time job. For some reason I'm getting a bad feeling. I like Cora, don't get me wrong, but that's yet another girl that has her eyes on me. I don't think I'll be able to get away with my shenanigans if this keeps up. Joey's not a problem, but I have Lilly, Banit, Beth, and now Cora, all here and two of them drop hints at me to marry them near constantly. Ma looks strangely smug. Great...

Anyways, Cora stayed for dinner and will be staying at her hotel until the end of the week to finish up Ma's books. She said that she wouldn't mind staying down here for winter. I imagine it is getting cold up in Chicago by now. It's still fairly warm here. Ma said, "Cora, iffin ya ever want ta move down here, ya have a job waitin' for ya." Cora looked at me and smiled. Damn it Ma! You're not helping! I need a drink.

November 2, 1891

Ma walked the kids to school and Banit to her lessons. However Banit came back. Joey isn't feeling well. Ma's there and with Cora working on the books Ma can take care of Joey. We'll visit her later on after she's had some rest.

Banit and I spent the morning lazing about. She tried to sweep the floors but was creating a bigger mess than what was already there. I stopped her and had her read to me from one of her books. I didn't mean to but I dozed off, luckily Banit didn't notice. She's gotten quite good with her English. Her writing has gotten much better as well. I would say that she's at a high school level there. She still needs some work on her arithmetic though. We did a few exercises and while she's got the basics she just makes some simple common mistakes. I helped her out as best I could. I was never any good at it to begin with. Really she just needs to memorize her multiplication tables and I think she'll be alright. To be fair, I don't think she needs private lessons anymore. I think that she could go to a regular school. If only she wasn't as old as she is, otherwise that's where I'd have her. That said, she is already more educated than most people. There are still a great number of people that can't read or write. Lilly and Bobby are lucky too. There are many children their age that work in factories instead of going to school. Then again I'm lucky that I was able to help them.

I got to thinking like that and for some reason when Lilly and Bobby came home I hugged them. Lilly certainly didn't mind but Bobby was confused. We got their homework done and the kids were out the door to play. Banit and I then headed over to check on Joey. Turns out she just ate some bad fish and got sick from it. She'll be alright in a day or two. We stayed for a while and helped Ma out. Not like we had much else to do.

We returned home in time for dinner and we played some games after. Today was a fairly relaxed day.

Post Script: Banit mentioned my journal. She said that she'd like one too, to practice her writing. I'll get her one tomorrow.

November 3, 1891

Joey's still feeling bad so I think Banit will take the week off. Instead we spent this morning cleaning and getting the house looking nice. We're going shopping as soon as Banit finishes getting dressed.

First stop was lunch. We had a nice simple lunch at a nearby restaurant and from there we more or less meandered around. We went by Mrs. Young's shop and she was hard at work getting Ms. Fellow's wedding dress finished. She's going to be beautiful. Banit was mesmerized by the dress. She said that she wanted one too. I don't think she understood why we laughed. Mrs. Young told her it was a wedding dress and it'll only be worn for the wedding. Banit reached out to touch it but I stopped her. I didn't want her to trip or fall on it. She hung on my arm after that. I think she was hinting rather heavily that she wants to be my bride. I...pretended not to notice. Dutchy's shop is next door and he called me over. He seemed worried about something.

Dutchy, like Mrs. Young, was working on the groomsmen's outfits. He said that he has the patterns and the sizes and has three of them finished but he's run out of fabric. His order hasn't arrived yet and he asked me if I'd go get it for him. He said that it should be at the seaside docks, and gave me the receipt. He said he'd make something special for me if I'd bring the fabric to him. That's reason enough for me. I could use a new vest or tie.

Banit and I hopped on the trolley and headed over to the docks. The dockmaster apologized and said that the ship was delayed by a storm. They're unloading it right now. In the mean time I found me a craps game. I gave Banit a little money for her to play as well. I'd be damned if she didn't walk away with over $200. She's good! I broke even but she made a profit! She had a shaky start, she didn't know how to play until I told her some secrets but low and behold she got it figured out quickly enough. One of the losers started cussing and said, "I'll never play with a damn injun squaw again. She probably cheated like they all do." I punched him and threw him into the water. "No one talks about her that way," I flashed my gun, "You understand?" He nodded and stomped off cussing me. It wasn't much longer and the dock master came and said that they found Dutchy's crate. It was surprisingly large. He must have ordered a lot. I borrowed a wagon and delivered it to Dutchy. He was so grateful. Strangely he didn't hug on me like he normally does. He must be behind schedule. That's one thing I have to hand him. He is always punctual. We returned the wagon and continued wandering about.

I guess it was near 5 or 6 o'clock when I thought we should head back. On the way we stopped in Mr. Harcourt's store to look for a journal or diary for Banit. We hardly made it through the door when Banit ran up and hugged Mr. Harcourt. He laughed and hugged her back. We talked and caught up with the goings on in his life and told him why we stopped by. A diary, he had just the one. It was a simple leather bound journal like mine but dyed blue with a small silver latch and key. There was another one but dyed pink. Banit liked the blue one so I bought it and got the pink one for Lilly. Mr. Harcourt had a new candy, chewing gum. It's called Black Jack and he said that it's very popular up in New England. He said not to swallow it but to chew it. They say it has some health benefits. He gave us a couple of packets. Strange stick like thing, tastes like licorice. I kind of like it. Mr. Harcourt said that when we're done with it to spit it out as it can get stuck in the stomach. Fair enough. It's only candy. He snuck a couple of hard candies in Banit's bag and sent us out the door. At home the chewing gum was a big hit. Lilly and Bobby loved it. We all had a piece after dinner.

Oh, I almost forgot the diaries. Lilly loved hers and was quick to tell Bobby not to read it. Banit didn't understand. Lilly told her that it's a place to keep all your secrets so you won't have to remember them, and to never let anyone read it. Bobby sneered and stuck his tongue out at Lilly. Little brat, Ha! I wonder if this means that Lilly will stop telling me about her day. I don't write about it as it's her private life, but she often comes to me or Ma about things that happen in her life. Probably not, a diary can't give advice, only listen.

November 4, 1891

It's raining today. Banit and I stayed home and lazed about. Really though we more or less spent the day cuddling. Cora came by for a visit. She said that she's got Ma's books up to date and that she's been teaching Ma how to do them the new way. I guess she came by about nine o'clock. She caught me lying on the couch with Banit on top of me napping. She wanted in. Things turned...heated. Banit was a bit uncomfortable being with two people at once but she relaxed and started to have fun. Cora however can be a bit aggressive and showed Banit a thing or two. For a while I just sat back and enjoyed the show. Banit was in heaven when I joined in and the two of us worked her over. We stopped at about one so that we could get cleaned up. Banit said that she didn't know that was possible. Cora kissed us goodbye and said that she'll come back again on Friday. Banit was exhausted and took a nap on the couch. I grabbed our big umbrella and headed over to the school. It wasn't raining when Lilly and Bobby left so they probably forgot to bring and umbrella.

I was right. No umbrellas. So Lilly was grateful that I came and got her. Bobby started to run off to play but I told him that he needs to change into play clothes before he does. He didn't have any homework so he was off playing as soon as he could. He was going over to Will's house, he said that they got a new game. Lilly however wanted to stay home. I don't know if she suspected something or just felt like it. She spent most of the afternoon either in my lap or sitting next to me cuddling up to my chest. I didn't say anything and instead napped. I was a bit tired. I woke with Lilly under one arm, Banit under the other, and Ma wrapping a blanket around the three of us. She mussed my hair and walked out. She must have come home for a quick dinner.

Not much else happened today, nothing of note anyways.

November 5, 1891

Still raining today, Ma's off though so she put us to work. I'm not complaining, it's not like I had anything better to do. Ma is baking an apple pie. I think this is the first time she's used the oven. I love her apple pie. Funny thing is she uses pears and not apples. It has something to do with apples being too sweet. It still tastes great.

Ma sent me after a few things. Luckily I was able to get them at Mr. Harcourt's store instead of the market. I always get distracted there and end up buying a lot of snacks. Mr. Harcourt was very busy. So busy in fact that he was asleep in his chair. I gave him a start and hollered, "This anyway to run a business? Fast asleep while your customers have to fend for themselves!" He looked at me and replied, "It may not be the right way but it is "A" way!" That seemed to tickle him. We talked and he said something that interested me a bit. He said that he'll be retiring at the end of the year. He's going to stick around until Jr. Gets settled and then he's handing the shop over to him. I'm a bit sad at hearing that. I'm so used to Mr. Harcourt always being here. The place won't seem the same without him. I told him that too. He laughed and said, "Well! While I won't be here as much they'll still be a Mr. Harcourt here. Just won't be the one you're used to, is all." I suppose he's right. I can't expect him to work here forever. I'll be alright with it so long as the one to take over is Jr. I'm glad he's here and wants to. I also found out that the other two Harcourt children will be coming for the wedding. They sent a letter saying so. It's been a long time since I've seen John and Jenny. I wonder if Jenny is still wearing her pigtails. Just a few more days until the big day...I think I'll tease Jr. about that a bit beforehand.

Well...I'm in trouble. I was busy talking with Mr. Harcourt and forgot to hurry back. Ma sent Banit after me. Ma wasn't too happy about me making her wait. I did get what she wanted though. She had the pie in the oven then turned to me and said, "Now you look here. I don't want anything to happen to that pie, ya hear? You'd best stay outta it iff'n ya know what's good for ya." Sneak a taste ONE time and this is what I get. Jeez...

Ma said that they're having a farewell party for Cora and the pie is for the party. Ma must have really liked her. The Pasture is closed for the party but will open again tomorrow like normal. Party is at seven. Its three now, kids will be coming home soon.

Ha ha ha! Oh boy! This was interesting! I was lying down on the couch when Ma started yelling about her pie. It seems as though someone took a little nibble off the crust. Naturally Ma blamed me but couldn't prove it. She lined us up and started lecturing about how that pie was for the party. She was giving me a particularly hard time. I professed my innocents until I was blue in the face, not that it did me any good. That is until Ma noticed a couple of crumbs hanging on Lilly's cheeks. Crumbs that looked suspiciously like pie crust crumbs. Ma gave Lilly an angry look and almost made Lilly cry. Lilly started tearing up, and blubbered an apology promising never to do that again. She ran up and hugged Ma, crying into her apron. Ma's still not used to having a girl around. She felt bad herself and hugged her back saying, "Its all right child, it's only a pie crust and it doesn't even show. Flint would've taken a whole piece." I had to defend myself, "Hey! In my defense, I didn't know you were saving that pie!" I made a bit of a show about it and got Lilly laughing a bit. Ma talked it over with her and her punishment is that she's not allowed to have a slice at the party. I think this is the first time she's been in trouble. At least that I can remember. Bobby's been in trouble. Banit certainly has, but not Lilly. Anyways, I got a good laugh out of it and no harms been done. So that's that.

The party was nice. It was a bit calmer that what I'd liked it to be, but it was still a good party. Not much to talk about really other than a couple of things. We quickly ran out of the pie that Ma baked. Lilly was still feeling bad about sneaking a nibble and was sitting off by herself. Bobby started to carry his slice over to her but I stopped him. I kept count of how many slices were served. There was one unaccounted for. While Lilly was pouting a bit Ma snuck over and handed her a slice. Lilly was confused at first but Ma said something to her. I believe she said, "I think you've punished yourself enough to have a slice." At least that's what she said to me when I did that, years ago. I told Bobby not to mention anything about it. He nodded. After that the party picked up. As we were leaving and saying our goodbyes to Cora, she smiled at me and promised to return so long as, and I quote, "Flint's here to welcome me back". Lilly got jealous, puffed her cheeks out at me and pinched me. She then hugged my arm tight and gave Cora a very challenging look. I don't think she likes Cora anymore. Everyone laughed and laughed. We called it a night after that and went home. Lilly hung off my arm the entire way. Once home it was bedtime for the kids. They still have school in the morning. I helped Ma clean up a bit and then turned in myself.

Post script: Lilly got me good. My side still hurts from that pinch!

November 6, 1891

Ma walked the kids to school as usual today. My only plans are to tease Jr. a bit about getting married. Banit and I are going to spend the morning working on her writing a bit. I'm having her write a short story and I'll critique it once she's done. I told her to make it two pages long but that it can be about whatever she wants. However I'm not going to help her write it. I'm just waiting on her to finish it.

Her essay wasn't that bad. She wrote about how different life is for her now compared to before she met me. She wrote about all the different people she's met, and all of the things she's done. Really, I almost felt embarrassed to read it. That aside, she did quite well. She still needs work on her composition skills and how to organize her thoughts but other than that it was well written. There were a few spelling mistakes and a couple of grammar issues but nothing bad. It read like a young person wrote it. I do think that she'd do very well in a regular school. I'll talk to Joey about either getting her more difficult lessons or moving her to a full time school. I praised Banit and told her where her mistakes were. When she heard how few mistakes and how impressed I was she smiled the biggest smile and hugged me. It was then that there was a knock on the door. It was Cora. She smiled and said, "I told you I'd be back on Friday." I invited her in. I was certain that we'd....have fun. Banit was too. She shyly greeted Cora, blushing the entire time. Cora quickly realized what she was thinking and corrected her. She said, "Relax, I'm only here to say goodbye before I get on my train." It was hard to tell if Banit was relieved or disappointed, probably both. I was too to be honest. Cora told us that she's planning on spending the winter down here after she takes care of some business up in Chicago. I think she likes how warm it is down here in the winter. We talked for a while before she had to leave. I carried her luggage to the station for her and Banit came to see her off. Cora hung out the window as the train left the station. Banit cried a little. I loaned her my handkerchief and walked her home. We were in time to meet Lilly and Bobby.

Bobby was especially dirty and Lilly was giving him hell for it. I asked if he got in trouble or anything, but no. He was only playing hard and got really dirty. Luckily he didn't tear his school clothes. I had him change into his play clothes and we quickly finished his homework. He nearly flew out the door to go play. I don't know why but he's very energetic today. Lilly finished hers and waited by the door. She invited her friends over. While she was waiting a hulking figure appeared in the doorway and hugged her. She screamed until she heard, "How cute!" It was Nessa and Grace. They came to visit Banit. They asked her if she'd like to go shopping with them. Banit turned to me for permission and I waved her off. I gave her $5 as she was leaving for anything she found that she wanted. They left and soon Lilly's bunch invaded. Sensing danger I fled. I left to tease Jr.

Jr. can usually be found at the family store. Sure enough he was there today. I laid into him with questions on why anyone in their right mind would get married. I teased him for quite a while until I had the strange feeling that someone was about to stab me in the back. I turned only to find Ms. Fellows! She was not happy. I guess she overheard my teasing Jr. and didn't like what she heard. My suspicions were confirmed as she went on a tirade about how not everyone is a womanizing, philandering, playboy like me! She told me exactly what she thought of my ways and how the best thing for me would be to either die alone and miserable or to get married myself. She stopped to catch her breath and was just about to start again when Jr. stopped her. He had to explain that I was only teasing and didn't mean anything. She was surprised to hear that I was almost married. She was shocked to hear that I almost married Joey! She looked me up and down and said, "Here I thought she had good taste." I didn't know how to respond to that. We talked a bit more when Mr. Harcourt came in making a bigger mess of things. Eventually he told us why he came by on his day off. He was asked by Dutchy to send Jr. and everyone else by to double check the fit of the suits he made. Jr. asked me to swing by and get Bobby. He has a tuxedo as well. I said my goodbyes and left them to their business and searched for Bobby.

I went by the Young's house, the Warren house, and even the Bancroft house. None of them knew where the kids were playing. They weren't in the creek, park, or any of the nearby empty lots. I had to ask around but eventually I found them. They'd made their way to the riverboat docks and were playing pirates. Bobby didn't want to go but he didn't have much choice. He's grown since his measurements were last taken. Will and the Warren boys asked Charlie to keep playing but she wanted to go with Bobby. I didn't think anything of it and so I brought her along. If anything I'd like to see how Dutchy handles that ball of energy running around. It should be good for a laugh.

Charlie disappointed me. She was a perfect angel in Dutchy's shop. She didn't cause any havoc or mayhem. Damn. I did get one good laugh out of her though. Since Bobby had grown so much since he was measured Dutchy had to make a couple of alterations. Fortunately he left room for growth so he made quick work of the necessary adjustments. We then had Bobby fully dressed. I was just about to crack a joke when Charlie piped in. She was blushing and said, "Bobby, you're so handsome!" Bobby choked up, Jr. and I nearly died laughing. Both of them blushed even deeper. Ah, young love, not that either will admit it.

We finished getting everything adjusted, which took most of the afternoon, and were leaving when Dutchy stopped me. He gave me a new jacket. He said it was a thank you gift for getting the fabric for him. I wasn't expecting a jacket, maybe a vest or a new tie but not a jacket! It is very nice. A winter weight one too, wool, and it is spectacular! I'm going to wear this one very often once it cools down a bit more. I thanked him and left. Luckily, Dutchy behaves when there are kids around. He doesn't hang or hug on me. Perhaps I should bring Bobby along each time I go. We dropped Charlie off and were about to head home when Frank and Charlotte offered to watch Bobby for the weekend. Bobby lit up and of course I agreed. That frees me up to go watch Lilly. I thanked them Charlotte walked Bobby inside and I talked with Frank a bit. He said that ever since Charlie has been playing with Bobby that she's been behaving so much better, and that she's even started taking an interest in more normal girl things. He thanked me for letting them play together so often. He said that she's just like her mother was at that age, wild, carefree, and stubborn. I laughed. I guess that if they do grow up together and get married that Bobby's a lucky one. Charlotte is stunningly beautiful. I left soon thereafter and headed home.

I was a bit late to dinner and so Lilly was angry. That ended after I promised to walk her to and from The Pasture. It was a nice dinner, just the two of us. Banit is staying with her friends tonight. We'll leave as soon as Lilly gets ready.

November 7, 1891

Yesterday was a busy day. As far as the show last night it was surprisingly sparse. Not very many people came. Oh well, some days are like that.

It's just Lilly and me today. I figure we'll go on a "date" today. I'm sure she'll love that. I haven't had much of a chance to spend time with her. When they first came to live here she was practically my shadow. Now, we've both been so busy that we really only get to spend the evenings together. I've asked her to get dressed and to dress nicely that we're going out. I don't have any plans but we'll find something to do.

We spent the morning shopping and looking around. She loved looking through the pet store. We went from shop to shop looking at this and that. We didn't buy much of anything. I got her a hair pin is about all. We stopped for lunch and from there we headed into the city proper. We strolled through an art gallery and ended up watching some street performers. Lilly made one very angry. The performer was singing and she started singing some songs that Lilly knew. She made the mistake of asking for a volunteer to sing along with her. Lilly raised her hand. They worked out what they were going to sing and they turned to face the crowd. The performer started but was shocked when Lilly started in. Lilly completely upstaged her and took over the show. Lilly was having so much fun that she didn't notice that the performer had stopped singing and was getting angry with her. Lilly finished the song and received a lot of applause. The performer was just about to go on a tirade when of all people Mr. Harcourt appeared. He was laughing that loud boisterous laugh of his as he came out from the crowd. "I thought I recognized that voice!" he hollered, "Now you're not leaving Ma and striking out on your own, are you?" "Uncle Harcourt! Why are you here?" Lilly was surprised to see him. Turns out he was out making arraignments for Jr.'s wedding and happened by. We walked off leaving a very indignant performer to her work. She picked up her things and left. It's a good thing Mr. Harcourt showed up. He prevented a very ugly scene and saved Lilly's day. We talked for a bit and told him what we were up to. He gave us a sly grin and said, "Oh, I see. You two are on a date. Well, I don't want to get in your way so I'll leave you to it." He laughed as he walked off. I waved to him and turned to continue on but saw that Lilly had frozen. Her face was beet red. It took a minute for her to regain her composure. She looked up at me and asked if this really was a date. "I suppose you could call it that." I replied, "Is that a problem?" She shook her head. I laughed and took her hand and started walking. She was very stiff and nervous after that. Her hand was shaking in mine. It was mid afternoon so I decided that she would need to rest up for tonight. We got on a nearby trolley and headed home. We were seated next to each other but she was still a bit frozen so I did the only thing I could think of. I started tickling her. She got mad and puffed her cheeks out at me so I poked them. She popped like a balloon! It was hilarious. Even Lilly was laughing. She curled up under my arm after that for the rest of the ride.

Banit was home when we arrived. She was a bit jealous that Lilly got to spend the day with me. Lilly made sure to lord it over her. She's such a smug little bunny.

The turn out tonight was a bit better than yesterday's. Lilly was in such a good mood though that she put on one of her best performances. Even Ma was surprised by it. Lilly was exhausted once she was done. Banit had to help her into bed. I'm a bit tired myself. These past few days have been busy. I think I'll take it easy tomorrow.

November 8, 1891

Today was a lazy day. Church was followed by lunch, naps, dinner, and lounging about.

November 9, 1891

Ma and I walked the kids to school and I went with Banit to her lessons. Really anymore all that they are is just the two of them talking. Joey said that there's not much else that she can teach her. She also said that tomorrow she's going to be substituting for a teacher at the school. She wanted to know if Banit could come along to help. Banit was excited for the opportunity to go to an actual school. Of course I encouraged her to go. It'd be a good experience for her. If nothing else it'll help find out what else she needs to be taught. I left them to their work and checked in on Ma. She was busy updating the books but didn't look as stressed as she normally does. She said that the new system that Cora showed her how to use is much easier and faster than what she was doing. She begged me to talk Cora into moving down here and working for her. I guess I'll have to send her a letter or something.

Really other than that I didn't do much. Oh, I worked on my speech I'll be giving for the wedding. I am the best man after all.

November 10, 1891

Banit woke up excited. She donned her best dress and primped and premed until she shined. We all walked together to school. Banit was so happy. However from what I understand she'll be working with the high school children so she won't be near Lilly and Bobby. I hope she does alright.

I wrote a letter to Cora about her working for Ma permanently. Hopefully she'll come down and take over the books. Ma was so much happier with her around. She said that she'll be returning as soon as she could. Then again it's only been 5 days since she left. She probably only arrived there yesterday. It should take the letter about the same amount of time to reach her.

Other than writing that letter I didn't do much. It was strange to be in the house with no one around. I worked some more on my speech and wandered around. I'm actually quite...lonesome. I think I've gotten used to everyone being around me.

Banit came home with Lilly and Bobby. She loved the school. She said that she wants to be a teacher. I told her that she needs to go to college to be a teacher. I then had to explain what a college is and what they do there. She wants to go. There's a good college in New Orleans, Tulane University. We could enroll her there. I'm not sure if she can pass the entry exam or not. I don't even know if they'll accept her as she's an Indian. It's always worth a shot I guess. I'd love to see her succeed. I don't think they'll accept any new students until the fall semester so we may have to wait, however, if they'll let her in for the spring that'll be best. I told Banit about it and she said that Grace and Nessa go there but she didn't know what it was. We talked about it and she's very interested in going. I'm sure that if Mr. Harcourt and a couple others were to write letters of recommendation for her that they'll let her in. Only problem is the cost. Banit does have some money but I don't know if it's enough. $2000 goes a long way but it might cost every bit of that to get her through. I'll look into it more tomorrow. Speaking of tomorrow, Banit is supposed to help out again at the school. Apparently she made a good impression and they'd like her to help out more often.

Really I don't have anything more to say about today.

November 11, 1891

After walking everyone to the school, I hurried over and got on a trolley to town. It took a few minutes but I arrived at Tulane University. I managed to get in and talk with the Dean of Admissions. He was unsure of having an Indian girl attend. He thought that she'd be a bad influence on the rest of the students. I had to hold back my desire to punch him. We negotiated and he said that if she can produce some letters of recommendation and pass the entry exam that he'll allow her to attend in the spring. Cost is $100 a semester plus books and supplies. That's not nearly as much as what I thought it'd be. I managed to get a practice exam from him and thanked him for allowing her the opportunity. He's not going to make this easy for her. I think he was only pleasant to me because of my reputation. Banit will have to fight a stacked deck. But since I have a practice exam I can see what she needs to work on and help her with. The real exam is in the beginning of December.

As I was leaving I heard a voice calling me. It was Grace. I was happy to see her. She was between classes. I told her why I was there and she got excited. She offered to help however she can. She also said that Nessa would love to help and that she has the top grades in her class. That last part, for some reason, scared me. She had to hurry off to her next class. I however had nothing better to do so I wandered the campus. I gained the attention of several of the college girls. I just may have to escort Banit here a few times...

Back home the house felt empty. I ended up going to visit with Mr. Harcourt. I told him of Banit's desire to go to college and he lit up. I swear he looked like a proud father. He was very angry when I told him what the Dean said. "That pencil-necked, little, son-of-a-bad word" He exclaimed. He said that he's going to get to work on the best Letter of Recommendation that's ever been written and he's going to give that worthless dean a talking to he won't soon forget. I don't think I've ever seen him this angry before. I've probably mentioned this before but it bears stating. He loves Banit and the kids as if they were his own. He was getting more and more worked up the longer we talked about it so I thought it'd be best to change subjects. I wanted his opinion on the speech I'd written for his son's wedding. He said it was short but well suited to us. Three more days he said. He also told me that Jr. and Ms. Fellows are going on a long honeymoon in the spring once things get settled down. I stayed and helped him in the store until the early afternoon. I wanted to get Banit started on the exam and see what she can do.

I came home just before Banit and the kids did. I told Banit what I did today and she was extremely excited. She was looking forward to the practice exam. I let her rest while Lilly and Bobby finished their homework and sent them out to play. I didn't want Banit to have any distractions. Once she was ready I told her the rules.

The rules of the actual exam are that she has three hours to complete it and everything that is not completed counts as a mistake. I gave her two hours. I also told her that she's not allowed any help. At exactly four o'clock I let her start. I left her alone. To be honest I was probably more nervous than she was. By five I was getting anxious. It was nearly six when she finally said that she was done. She said that she would have been done sooner but she went back over it to check her answers. I graded it using the answer sheet that was provided. She got nearly 90 percent correct. The only ones she missed were on her arithmetic and history. I'm not that great with arithmetic, but I'm good with history. I can help her there. I'm sure Joey or Grace can help her with the arithmetic. Her penmanship still needs some work but that'll come. She's only been writing for less than a year. She really is very smart. I'm sure that she'll do just fine. Best part is she won't have to go away to college she can stay here and still attend. When I went we didn't know and so I went back east for college. This will be much better.

Lilly and Bobby came home soon after and we had dinner as usual. Lilly and I cooked. Bobby was busy telling how Will and the Warren boys played a prank on their teacher and got in trouble. Banit was about to bust a gut wanting to talk about what she did all day. She helped give lessons and was even allowed to teach reading to some of the younger students. She's so happy. I think she'll be a great teacher. She said that the students all call her Ms. Locke. Lilly and I choked a bit at hearing that. Banit said that no one could say her last name so they decided to give her my last name as she's living with me. I don't know what to say to that. At least it's not MRS. Locke. Lilly was furious and didn't say anything for the rest of the evening. Banit though was happy as she could be. I heard her later on in the lavatory calling herself Ms. Locke. I suppose that since I've about adopted her that letting her take my last name would be alright. Just so long as people understand that we're not married. Lilly pouted the rest of the evening. Today was stressful. I'm going to call it an early night.

Post Script: I've had a lot of very long days recently. I'm starting to think that I need a vacation.

November 12, 1891

I woke to find that a certain bunny had crawled in and helped herself to my side of the bed. I guess hearing Banit take my name was a bit much for her. She's still jealous of the attention that I've given Banit recently. Poor girl, it must drive her crazy to know that I think of her as my daughter and not as a love interest. I can only hope that she finds someone her own age to fall in love with some day.

Ma left to go talk with her suppliers. She's had issues with them not filling the orders correctly. Boy, are they in trouble. She should be back sometime in the afternoon. This usually happens when they get a new person. The older ones know not to mess up Ma's orders.

Banit went back to the school to see if they needed any help today but the regular teacher has come back and so she wasn't needed. They did pay her though and told her that if she wants that they'll keep her in mind anytime they need help. She was happy enough with that but still wanted to help. I talked with her and she said that she feels bad that she can't help much around the house and wants to be useful. She loved helping out at the school and wants to repay Ma and me for our kindness. I hugged her and kissed her forehead. I told her not to worry about repaying us. She was moping a bit so I busied her with some chores around the house. She's gotten quite good with the dishes just so long as she doesn't have to move around much. We worked all morning around the house doing this and that. I mowed mostly. Luckily we don't have a large yard. I had just about run out of things for us to do when Mr. Harcourt came for a visit and low and behold, John and Jenny came with him. He wanted to introduce them to Banit and the kids. John looks just like his older brother now. Jenny has gotten to be quite attractive. Something Mr. Harcourt had to point out and warn me against. Jenny and Banit fast became friends. They're about the same age if I'm not mistaken. Jenny loved that Banit was a real Indian and had all kinds of questions for her. They hurried off inside and had themselves a grand time talking. I wanted to catch up with John. We used to call him Johnnyboy but we'll have to stop now. He said that he read quite a few news articles about me recently. He wanted all the details. We talked for a long time. Jenny's gone to school to be a teacher and was tickled that Banit wanted to do the same. John however wants to strike out and start his own business. He wants to be a baker. He's going to business school during the day and works at a bakery at night and early in the mornings. He said that he wants to come back and open his own bakery. Mr. Harcourt promised to front the money to get him started too. I figured he'd do something like that. He always loved bread and pastries. Before long Lilly and Bobby came home. We put homework off so that we could introduce them. Jenny thought Lilly was a doll and John got a good laugh out of Bobby by teasing him a bit. That's the Harcourts for you. Not a mean bone in the lot and friendly as can be.

The Harcourts left saying they had several other people to see. It was after that that Ma came home. She had bandages on her hands and was very mad. She said that the woman that used to take her orders got herself pregnant and quit. The new one is an idiot. Ma then said that she broke the desk when she hit it. I thought it'd be best to give her some room. Banit volunteered to cook, Lilly helped. Despite owning a saloon Ma doesn't drink often. This was the first time I've seen her break out a bottle in a few years. Ma's not a bad drunk but she's loud and affectionate and tends to cry a lot. Banit and the kids were scared at first but after about her third glass Ma grabbed Lilly and hugged her saying that she needed something nice and sweet to hold on to as others are stupid and idiots. Ma cried a little on Lilly's head. She's buried Lilly's face in her chest. She gets like this every now and then so I've come up with a trick that seems to work. I asked Bobby to run to the stable a couple of blocks away and fetch as much fresh straw as he can carry. I had Banit stand near Ma and I managed to get Ma to release Lilly. Ma stood up looked at me then Banit and hugged her sitting Banit down in her lap. I apologized and asked her to keep Ma occupied. I then had Lilly fetch a pillow case while I got a photograph of Pa. When Bobby returned we stuffed the pillow case with straw and another pillow. I distracted Ma with the photograph and when she reached out for a hug I switched Banit out for the pillow case. She hugged it and laid down on the couch as I set the picture of Pa down on the coffee table. It wasn't long before she was fast asleep. I told everyone to stay out of the living room and to be quiet. Lilly wanted to know what the straw was for. I told her that Pa despite living in the city so long always smelled of straw. That always calms Ma down and she sleeps easy. What a hectic day. We nearly forgot about the kid's homework. We got it finished and called it an early night.

Post script: Every now and then I can hear Ma downstairs cussing about her suppliers followed by her saying how much she loves everyone.

November 13, 1891

Ma woke with a bit of a hangover. She drank nearly an entire bottle of whiskey last night. Lilly was a bit scared of her at first but Ma was in a good mood. She usually is after she's been drinking. That's the thing about her. She'll let all of her stress build up and then dump it in one night of drinking. She's a cheap drunk too. She always wakes up happy as can be despite her hangover.

The Pasture is closed today and tomorrow for the wedding. We're to have a rehearsal today and then have lunch. I've never been involved in a wedding before, I'm a bit nervous. Lilly and Bobby are as well. Lilly is the flower girl and Bobby is the ring-bearer. Banit is excited to be a bride's maid. She's never seen an actual wedding.

We went though the rehearsal and if all goes well it should be a beautiful ceremony. Joey is the Maid-of-Honor and then there's a girl I don't know behind her, then a couple of the Girls from the saloon and Banit. The Church is decorated beautifully. They spared no expense on it. The reception is going to be held in The Pasture as it's the only place big enough for everyone that was available. Ma offered its use. She's set Alice and a couple of the other Girls to decorating it and taking down some of the artwork on the walls.

Now that the rehearsal is over and we're free it's time to party. Unfortunately Bobby can't come with us, not where we're going. If I'm able to I'll be sure to write about it.

November 14, 1891

Good Lord! I'm never drinking again. We crawled from eight different saloons and burlesque houses. John paid a couple of prostitutes to have sex with each other while we watched. What a night. We woke up slouched together in an alley between two saloons. I'm so glad that the wedding isn't until the afternoon.

So, somehow I managed to get Jr. to the Church on time. I almost needed a pole to get him to stand straight though. To be honest I think I needed one for myself. Despite that, I had the ring and Jr. was looking very nice. While the bride and groom were getting ready I managed to sneak out with Bobby and Mr. Harcourt and we decorated the coach Mr. Harcourt rented. I left a dirty book in the back seat. Mr. Harcourt laughed. We even tied some cans and other things to the back of the coach.

The ceremony was very nice. The new MRS. Harcourt was beautiful, the dress was stunning. The wedding itself seemed like something you'd only read about in books of princesses. It went off with only a minor hitch, as you can probably guess, Banit. She tripped over her dress and started falling while walking down the aisle. I foresaw that happening so I warned John about it. He managed to catch her without making a big scene. Lilly and Bobby did their part without any problems. Well...Bobby's tie was a bit crooked. Ma loves this kind of thing and was nearly in tears during the entire ceremony. I heard from several guests that this was one of the most beautiful weddings they've ever seen. I can believe it. They even wrote their own vows and both sounded like poetry. I'm very impressed.

I couldn't help noticing three sets of eyes locked on me, Banit, Lilly, and Ma's. I could almost hear them. Banit and Lilly's eyes were begging me to marry them. Ma's eyes were telling me to get married and settle down. I think I'm in for a rough few next days.

After the ceremony we had the reception at The Pasture. We had the Grand Entrance, the presentation of the newlyweds and the first dance. The musicians that Mr. Harcourt hired were fantastic. Mrs. Harcourt Jr. asked Lilly to sing a song with them and it was great. She was born to sing. The reception was very interesting. Once my part was done all I had left to do was to enjoy the party and dance. Lilly was very demanding. She wanted to dance with me on every song. Banit did too, it was funny watching them jockey for position. Often I would tease them by getting them squabbling then going off to dance with someone else. I even had the chance to dance with the bride. It was great fun. She asked me what we did last night. I told her that what happens during a bachelor party is a secret. She glared at me and pouted. She said that no one would tell her. Of course I'm not going to tell her! Joey asked Bobby to dance. I've never seen ears redder than his. There was a young boy there I haven't seen. He asked Lilly to dance. She wouldn't give him the time of day, poor kid. There was a photographer there and so we were able to get pictures taken of us. I'll go by Monday and order a few copies. I'm sure Ma and the girls would like that.

We didn't get back in until well after midnight. I had to carry Bobby home on my back. What a great day. Oh, it rained some during the ceremony. Someone told me that that's good luck. I don't understand that, but good for them. It started and stopped while we were all inside so no one got wet.

Lilly and Banit didn't want to take their dresses off. I can hear Ma in their room negotiating with them. Lilly doesn't want to mess up her hair either. Apparently they hired a professional stylist to come in and fix everyone's hair. I keep mine cropped short so that's not a problem. Bobby got his all fixed up. That's the finest I've seen him look. I bet Charlie would love a picture of him like that. Really, I'm glad that it's all over with now. Although I wouldn't mind having a party like that again. Jr. and Mary looked exhausted. I am too. Now that things are quieting down I'm starting to feel it. I'm going to call it a night.

November 15, 1891

We went to Church like we normally do but there was a big fuss. Jr. and Mary came and all the old women had to come greet them. They somehow look even more exhausted than they did last night. I can only imagine what kept them up...

Anyways, today we spent the day cleaning up the saloon so that it can open on Monday. There's nothing to talk about other than The Girls jabbering on about the wedding. They sounded like a bunch of hens.

November 16, 1891

Banit and I walked the kids to school today. Ma slept in. I wanted to talk to Joey about Banit going to college. Joey was excited for her and has agreed to teach her harder arithmetic and other regular subjects. I'm going to help out however I can. I left Banit there and headed off to town.

First stop was the photographer's studio. I placed an order for two copies of everything and an extra copy of a photograph of Bobby. I'm going to give it to Charlie. I think that'll be good for a laugh.

I was thinking about the wedding and suddenly I was thinking of Luke and Edna. I wanted to go check on them so I went by the police station. Luke was out on patrol but they told me where he was assigned. It didn't take long to find him. I told him about the wedding and asked how he's doing. He said that they are doing fine. They fight every now and then but nothing bad. It's usually over stupid things like the right way to do something, but they always make up. He started droning on and on about her. He's still madly in love with her. That's great. He also said that he's been invited to spend Christmas with her family. Well, I'm guessing that in a year or two I'll be getting another wedding invitation. He had to go back on patrol so we parted ways. I didn't have anything else to do and was still tired so I went home.

There I saw a young man sitting on the steps to our house. I asked him what he was doing and he introduced himself. He's a panicky lizard who calls himself Michael Packard. He said that he was sent to find me by the marshal of Lampasas, Texas. He said that I worked with Marshal Brown before and that he's asking for my help. Brown...He couldn't mean Lamar Brown could he? Last I heard Lamar Brown was two shakes away from a posse. How'd he become a Marshal? I couldn't get anymore information out of Michael. He seems desperate. That's not a good thing. Well, normally I wouldn't go but if it is Lamar Brown then I need to find out what's going on. He wouldn't ask for help unless it was important, and I do owe him. I told Michael that I'd go as soon as I can but that it'd be a few days before I left. He said that'd probably be too late. I guess it really is an emergency. Luckily there's a train that goes directly there. I said that I'd get on the first train tomorrow. He thanked me. Damn. This isn't good.

I hurried over to The Pasture and told Ma what happened. She looked like she was going to strangle Michael. He hid behind me. She said that she expects me to return as soon as possible. I then headed over to the train station and Michael bought first class tickets with a sleeper cabin for the 8'oclock train. It's a near direct line and the fastest one to boot. He said that he'll come by in the morning to get me. Suddenly, I had a job to do.

I hurried home and got my guns. I wanted them in top shape. I took them over to the gunsmith to get cleaned up and tuned. He didn't like having to do a rush job but he did it anyways. While he worked I went home and packed my things. Banit was home by then and begged me not to go. I'd much rather not. I hugged her and reassured her that it was probably nothing and that I'd be back in no time. I lied and she knew it, but she hid her worry. She's such a good girl.

I ran and got my guns back. He said that they were in top shape and only needed cleaning.

Lilly and Bobby came home and were very upset that I was leaving so suddenly. Lilly refused to let me. Bobby stayed quiet but made me promise to come back. Damn it Lamar. This had better be worth it.

Dinner was very quiet.

Post Script: This had better be worth it.

November 17, 1891

Banit and Lilly slept with Bobby and I. It was difficult to leave this morning. Mr. Harcourt had heard and said that he'll be sure to check in on the family while I'm gone. Michael indeed came by to fetch me. Ma looked ready to kill him, so did Lilly and Banit. Bobby kicked him and called him some names. Like I said, it'd better be worth this.

We boarded the train and headed off. Michael still wouldn't give me any details. In fact it's now night and I haven't been able to get anything more out of him than, "It's bad."

I don't know if I'm more scared right now, or mad. I'd put money on mad though.

November 18, 1891

Michael is following me everywhere I go. I can't get a moment's peace. His damnable nervousness is driving me insane and is scaring away any chance I have at finding some entertainment.

What a waste of a day.

November 20, 1891

Yesterday and today, the same bit. I haven't even started and I'm ready for it to be over. Michael is such a sad sack. We passed through Houston today and are on the final train. Luckily this is a fast one and so we're making good progress. It's been raining very hard.

November 23, 1891

I'm about ready to throw Michael off of this train. It's a damn good thing that we're to arrive tomorrow.

November 24, 1891

Thank god we've finally arrived. First things first I got me a hotel room, bathed and changed clothes. Michael was there crying the entire time for me to hurry. I donned my gunbelt, grabbed my shotgun and headed over to the Marshal's office.

There I found Marshal Lamar Brown. Comfortably sitting, leaning back with his feet on the desk puffing on a pipe. I demanded to know what was so important that I had to rush over. He laughed and said I looked ready for a war. I was but that's not the point. He said that because of the recent drought that water has been scarce. People were starting to fight over what ever water they could find. A man by the name of Cody owned the main water source for the area. He let people freely come and use his water. However there was another, Lawrence, that owed the land just below his and he started a range war to get Cody's water rights so that he'd have complete control of the area. Lawrence forced people to either give up their land or pay a fortune for water. However when the rains came no one needed Lawrence or Cody's water anymore. Things had just started to calm down when a stampede killed Lawrence and a couple of gunmen he hired. Brown sent a telegram to stop me but I never got it.

What a waste of a week. I told Brown to never send Michael anywhere ever again. He laughed and thanked me for coming all this way. I demanded that he get me on the next train back home. He patted me on the back and told me that I should stay a while and see the sights. For some reason I just got mad and I hit him, hard, several times, Michael too. I told him never to send for me again. I stormed off and bought tickets for the next train back. It leaves this afternoon. I sent a telegram home saying that I'm returning. It's been a long time since I've been that mad.

I've gathered my things and I'm on the train now. There's no sleeper cabin but it just has to get me to Houston. It shouldn't take but a couple of days.

What a waste of a week.

November 25, 1891

Oh it's so much better not having that damn lizard here anymore, I'm calmer and I can actually talk to people. This train isn't much. More or less a series of benches but there's not many people so we can stretch out and lay down. Really the only ones that are doubling up are a few kids. From what I overheard they're on their way to spend the holiday season with family near Houston. The father is a kind man, we've been playing poker. He doesn't gamble so we've just been playing for chips. Funny, when I'm not playing for money I'm lucky. We played for most of the day. I like him, he goes by Jim.

November 28, 1891

The past few days have been fairly boring. There's nothing worth talking about really. We played poker, slept, read and exchanged books, and that's about it.

We're to reach Houston tomorrow. I'm very much ready to be home. I just realized. Today is one year exactly that I found Lilly and Bobby. When I get home we're going to have a big party and invite all of their friends and we'll make it a grand occasion.

Today is much like the others.

November 29, 1891

We reached Houston early this morning. I said goodbye to Jim and his family. They said if I'm ever in Brownwood to look them up, I said the same to them. There was a stage coach waiting for them and the driver was the grandfather. What a nice group of people.

I was early enough to purchase the last sleeper cabin ticket for the nine o'clock train. That gives me about an hour to mill about. I'm not going far I just want to stretch my legs a bit and get cleaned up.

I went by a nearby hotel and was lent use of their bath. It's so nice to be clean again. My travel clothes are more than a bit dirty so I really have no choice but to put on my good clothes. I don't like wearing them on trains as sometimes soot from the engine finds its way inside. I made my way back to the train, shining like the door of a whorehouse, but I feel so much better.

I'm fairly certain I was almost robbed. I heard some heavy steps approach me from behind and so I turned to face them. A rough looking rat was there and when he saw my guns he turned and walked off. That's another reason I don't like dressing right while traveling. People think I'm an easy target, but that's why I carry a gun. I don't even have to fire it to stop an attack.

We boarded without further incident. I met my cabin mates, two salesmen and a retired businessman. They are driving me insane. The salesmen are constantly trying to sell something and the businessman has a superiority complex that is aggravating as hell. I'll only sleep in there. I took my luggage and put it in the cargo car. It's guarded so I won't have to worry about it "accidentally" coming open.

The main car is nice. I think it's new. There are few open seats but even standing would be better than staying in that cabin. I have found no young interested women so far. The only interested woman I found makes me feel that I'd catch something I couldn't get rid of if I even spoke to her. I am keeping my distance from her and showing my displeasure at her approach.

There are several other cars and so I'll explore them in turn. Surely I can find some company for the next few days.

November 30, 1891

It's not what I planned but I'm more than happy now. I found a young couple, a pair of Spitz dogs. They said that since it's getting cooler that they've decided to explore the south a bit. George and Elizabeth, they are very friendly towards me. We've been talking about this and that for most of the day. Elizabeth has been running her foot up and down my leg, George saw this and smiled. This is going to be interesting. They've invited me over to their cabin. I'll gladly accept their offer.

December 1, 1891

What a night! I learned several things. Firstly, a willing woman can accommodate two at once, front and back. Secondly, canines have a knot on the base of their...maleness. Third, they get it stuck inside. George is like me and will sleep with men as well as women. When we got into it he made his way behind me and worked himself in. I hadn't seen his yet and so I was very surprised to find me stuck to him. Elizabeth took advantage of that by suckling on mine and pulling my head down between her legs. I've never experienced anything like that before. I'm very glad they've invited me to stick around for the rest of the trip. We're to arrive on the third.

I find it funny. Their fur is the same color so when they're together it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

December 2, 1891

I can't tell you how many times we've had sex today. I don't think I've put my clothes on at all except to head to the washroom and clean up a bit. Elizabeth is a daring sort. We were passing though a small town today and she opened the curtains. She asked us to take her from each end so that people could see her as we passed. I have to admit it was hilarious seeing people reactions when they saw us. The next small town she wanted to be pressed up against the glass and taken from behind. There was a bit of a turn so the train had to slow. A group of young men got a great show. They ran along the train trying to catch up and watch but weren't fast enough. Elizabeth waved to them. At one point she opened the window and was hanging out.

Post Script: I am exhausted.

December 3, 1891

We had a quick romp this morning but that was it. We each took our turn at the washroom and got cleaned up. Lord knows we need it. We're to arrive just before noon.

At the station we said our goodbyes and I left them to explore. I'm still tired from yesterday but I'm very glad to be home. Speaking of home Ma was there and so I snuck in and scared her. She screamed and turned to fight. When she saw me though, she ran up and hugged me hard enough to crack my back. She laughed hard after I told her of my trip. I asked her if we could have a party this weekend. I told her what I wanted but she said that it'd be better to have a small affair with just the family. She's right though. We'll have a small one on Saturday. I took my things upstairs and was unpacking when a thought came to mind. I asked Ma not to tell anyone I was home just yet. She didn't understand but went along with it.

Banit was the first one home. I hid behind the front door and jumped out to surprise her. She let out the cutest squeak and fell back on her bottom. I heard some laughter and discovered that Grace and Nessa had come with her. Banit though was so happy to see me that she jumped up and hugged me. Nessa was feeling the moment and joined in. That was awkward but funny nonetheless. I did the same when Lilly and Bobby came home. Lilly screamed a bit and Bobby jumped in surprise. The real terror came when we heard "How cute!" and saw Nessa running towards Lilly. Lilly bolted and ran. She's quite fast. Nessa's a bit faster though and caught her. Bobby laughed and laughed. Lilly feigned being angry but it was a bit obvious that she was enjoying the attention.

Grace and Nessa came to help Banit study for college. She's been studying everything she can to prepare for the test. She also said that she's had lessons from Joey everyday since the 16thof November. Banit said a letter came for her telling her that the entrance exam is on the 7th. That's Monday! I promised her that I'll do whatever I can to help. She asked me to give her another practice exam so that she can see how she's doing. I only had one, but I can work off of it and make my own. I'll have to grade it the hard way but it should be alright. I wanted to get it ready by tomorrow so I got to work on it. The questions are similar but I changed the numbers around. I made sure to work them out and check them. Nessa helped too. She's surprisingly good with numbers. She made quick work of making a new test and made sure to write down the answers for me. I worked out the English portion and Grace made the science. We managed to get it done but it was late. Ma asked them to stay the night. We had to talk them into it but they finally agreed. Bobby and I gave them use of our bedroom. We moved into the living room.

Post Script: I'm glad to be home and I'm very grateful that I managed to be home in time for Banit's big test.

December 4, 1891

It was a bit of a scramble to get everyone ready for their various schools. Since I don't have anything better to do I cooked breakfast. I thought it was funny watching everyone run around so chaotically. While they ate I ran off and got a carriage for Grace and Nessa. I figured that the least I could do is take them to school. They have been helping Banit a lot.

Now that everyone is gone, it's awfully quiet. I think I should go make arraignments for tomorrow's party. I went by a good restaurant and talked them into catering it for us. They said that it won't be a problem as close as we are and since it's only the five of us. I'm planning on it being a good lunch so that everyone can be there.

After that I went and bought some simple decorations and the like. I hid everything in the attic. I'll have to come up with some way to get the kids out of the house tomorrow morning. I'm going to try and not disturb Banit. I want her focused on her test. A little party would be just fine and shouldn't bother her.

I just checked and saw that we're low on flour. That can be my excuse! I can send them to Mr. Brooks' store after some and decorate while they're gone. I'll give them some money for candy to keep them busy for a bit.

I still can't believe it's been a year since I found them. It feels like they've been here all along but at the same time like they've only been here a month.

I went by Lilly's show. Mrs. Harcourt Jr. was in high spirits. Lilly was too. Their music was something to behold. There was a large crowd tonight, and everyone seemed to be in a good mood.

December 5, 1891

As usual on Saturday the kids slept in. That's fine. It was nearly nine by the time they finally came downstairs. I asked Lilly if she could go to Mr. Brooks store for flour. She agreed and I asked Bobby to go with her. I gave them the money for the flour and a little extra. I told them to stop and get some candy or something from Mr. Harcourt. Bobby was excited at the prospect of candy. Lilly just loves shopping. I told them to be back by lunchtime as I was going to make them something. They hurried off, and I got busy.

I had Banit sit at the writing desk in the living room and take the practice test we made and while she was busy I decorated the dining room. I had almost finished when there was a knock on the door. It was the caterers. Their timing was almost perfect. I had them come in the back door as not to disturb Banit. They got busy getting setting up and I finished decorating. Ma came home during all this and helped them out. Banit finished the arithmetic portion of the test. I told her to take a break and we'll have lunch. She was surprised to see everything. I told her why we were having a small party and she hugged me. She wanted to help, but I told her we were almost finished. I had her go clean up and watch for Lilly and Bobby instead. The restaurant owner heard about our little party and sent along a specially made cake. He told us it was on the house. We had just finished setting up when Banit came crashing in. She fell flat on her face. Luckily she didn't break anything. She said that Lilly and Bobby were coming. Banit and Ma took their places at the table and I met the kids at the door. They were dumbfounded that we were having a special party just to celebrate that they've lived with us for a year. They nearly started crying and hugged me. They then ran up and hugged Ma. They asked why we were having a party for them. Ma looked down and said, "Why wouldn't we want to celebrate one of best things that ever happened in this house?" It took a minute for them to calm down enough to eat. Banit and even some of the caterers were in tears watching this. I looked over at Banit and told her this party is for her as well. She's part of the family too. She smiled, and nearly cried. Once things calmed down the waiters served our lunches. It was such a lovely meal. I'll be honest here. I almost cried myself.

Alright! Enough with the lovey-dovey stuff! It's time to get back to business. After lunch, we had to get everyone settled down. Banit and the kids felt like cuddling with Ma and me so we all sat on the couch. The caterers were kind enough to clean up and leave quietly out the back. It was an hour before they let up. It was near three o'clock before Banit finally went back to work on her test. I hope all this excitement in the middle of her test doesn't mess her up.

When four o'clock rolled around she was done. I checked her answers and was very surprised to find that she only missed a handful and most of those were on the science portion. She only missed one on the arithmetic and that was a simple mistake and her writing portion was near flawless. She didn't understand some of the harder words I used but I didn't think she would, that's why I used them. Really I think she's ready for the actual test. Grace and Nessa came by to see how she did. They too were impressed. Grace said that the questions she missed on the science portion were very difficult ones and not something to be worried about. I'd say that all in all she correctly answered 90 percent of the test correctly. She should be fine. We're going to keep working with her tomorrow going over some basic points and what to expect going in to a test like that. Banit thanked us over and over again for helping her and letting her do this.

I stayed home tonight. Bobby, Banit and her friends, and I all played games and relaxed for most of the evening. Grace and Nessa are staying over again. The three of them are sleeping in my bed while Bobby sleeps in Banit's. I stayed up and waited for Lilly. We sat down and she asked me to brush out her hair. It was a bit awkward with her next to me on the couch so I sat her in my lap. It wasn't long before she had fallen asleep. I carried her upstairs and undressed her. I somehow managed to get her nightgown on her without waking her and I tucked her into bed. I think I could get a good laugh out of this tomorrow... or a slap. Either would be funny.

Post script: Well, I'm tired so I'm going to sleep now as well. Good night.

December 6, 1891

Lilly gave a scream this morning! I ran upstairs thinking something had happened. She saw me and gave me the most horrible look. She asked if I had undressed her. I thought quickly and started laughing. She said, "I don't see what's so funny!" She was so mad! I stopped laughing and replied, "You don't remember? I carried you upstairs and you woke up and kicked me out. You must have changed and forgot all about it!" Lilly stared back at me, looking to see if I was telling the truth or not. She must have accepted it and walked off confused but still thinking about it. I doubt she fully believes me but I'm not going to say anything. She's...sensitive about such things. I don't want to embarrass her like that. I'll find a better way to do that. Ma looked at me and huffed at me. She's not fooled either.

Once everything calmed down we headed off to Church. Grace and Nessa joined us. We took up the better part of the pew. Nessa, being Nessa, pulled Bobby into her lap and hugged on him the entire time. Bobby dozed off at some point, Nessa did too. She rested her chin on the top of his head. After Church, at the luncheon, Will and the Warren boys teased Bobby for cuddling with a girl. They were giving him quite the hard time when Nessa snuck up behind them and with one swoop, picked all three of them up and started hugging on them saying how cute they were. That's one thing about Nessa if she finds something cute she hugs it even if she has to chase it down. Sad part is she's fast enough that not many can get away from her. She must have hugged every child there. Grace was so embarrassed.

Lilly and Bobby both ran off to play with their groups. Banit asked permission to go off with Grace and Nessa. I didn't have much to do so I ended up laying about the house. Then again Ma did too. She asked me about last night so I told her. She laughed and said that lying about it to Lilly was probably the best thing.

We didn't do much else today. Ma enjoyed lazing about for a change. Banit came home near five and returned to studying. That's about it.

December 7, 1891

Today is the big day. Banit is a nervous wreck. I hope she can calm down and focus. Last night Mr. Harcourt and Mr. Brooks came by they had both written letters of recommendation for Banit. I'll be taking those with me to give to the Dean personally. Banit could hardly eat breakfast. I can't blame her though this is a big event. I told her that the worst that could happen is that they say no, and even then she can always try again. Lilly and Bobby wished her luck on their way out. Ma patted her on the back and said that if they don't let her in then she'll make them regret it. She'd set out one of Banit's better dresses to wear. We'll be taking a trolley as soon as she's ready.

Well, it's eight o'clock and Banit's in the testing room now. I'm waiting for her just outside as I promised her. She's not the only one taking the test. There are nearly forty others taking it as well. I'm probably more nervous for her than I was when I took mine. I hope she does well.

She's finally done! It seemed like I was sitting there all day. It was a paltry two hours. She said that the actual test was easier than the one that Nessa and I made for her. I hope she's right and does well. We left there and went off to the Dean's office. I didn't make an appointment but made a show out of delivering the letters to him directly. I wanted him to understand that I'm not going to accept any excuses to not allow her in. He was not pleased but didn't say anything about it. We left and met up with Grace and Nessa for lunch. They were glad to hear that Banit thinks she did well. However we won't know anything until she gets an official acceptance letter. Now's the worst part of the test, waiting.

Grace and Nessa had to hurry off to class after lunch so Banit and I took a small tour of the campus. She was very impressed by how big it is. I guess I'm a bit jaded as I went to a school back east that makes this one look tiny in comparison. She loved the library and all the books. I told her that nearly all the knowledge that mankind has is within those walls. She was dumbfounded, or at least couldn't find the right words. Once we finished looking around campus we headed home.

Lilly and Bobby were there already and were so happy for Banit. Ma came home for dinner and to give Banit a hug. Banit looked around and said that she loves us all so much.

December 8, 1891

I walked Banit to her lessons today. Joey said that Banit doesn't need them anymore but is more than welcome to visit with her anytime. We sat around and talked instead. She said that Alice is in trouble for hitting a man again. She gave a young man a black eye when all he wanted was to compliment her on her dancing. I laughed much too hard at that. I left Banit there to talk more and wandered around some.

The neighborhood rumor mill has it that the now empty lot where the Greens lived has been sold. I wonder who's going to build there. I just hope that it's someone I can get along with. I got to thinking about the Greens and so I went looking for Luke. According to him, the Greens are the prime suspects in several grizzly murders up north. They lived near every incident and moved shortly after each one. The Pinkerton's are looking in to them very heavily and believe that the Greens are the one's that did them. Well, they're not a problem here anymore so I'm not going to worry about it. No need for me to get involved. Besides I don't want anything to do with the Pinkerton men. They're all murders as far as I'm concerned.

I came home to an interesting sight. Were I much younger I would have enjoyed it immensely. Lilly and her bunch were having a dress up party in the living room. They'd pulled the curtains and locked the door. I was wondering why the door was locked. However, they had forgotten to lock the back door. I walked in on five near naked girls in the middle of changing dresses. As I walked into the living room from the dining room I called out to Lilly, "Lilly, why's the front door locked?" They looked at me in shear horror. All I could manage to say was "Oh." You can imagine the screams. I left and didn't come back until dinner time. It was awkward and quiet. Lilly wouldn't speak to me and stared at me angrily. Banit asked what happened but when I tried to answer Lilly made very angry noises. I tried apologizing but she wouldn't accept it no matter how hard I tried.

Post Script: It's not like I meant to see them or peeped. It was an accident.

Lilly's still mad at me. She wouldn't let me walk her to school. I told Ma and Banit about it. Ma just about died laughing. I didn't want to make her laugh I wanted her help! She said that she'll talk to Lilly about it and make her understand. I hope so. I always enjoyed listening to her as she tells me about her day.

Lilly's still mad at me and refuses my help on her homework. She said that her friends are upset and are saying that no one would want to marry them now. I feel like a monster.

Today was a deafeningly quiet day.

December 10, 1891

Still quiet, I wish she'd forgive me or at least punish me. I just feel horrible. I spent most of the day today walking around mostly pacing. I thought of getting an apology gift for them but that just seemed like I was buying them off. I don't know. My only relief today was that Ma was home and so I had some one that wasn't scared of Lilly.

December 11, 1891

I got more of the same today. I did however find out a few things. One, a young family has bought the Green lot and has started building a house there. They are a pair of mice. Rather short ones too. They are the Mearns, Edgar and Ella Mearns. Edgar stands maybe five and a half foot tall and has grey fur. Ella is maybe only five feet tall and has cinnamon colored fur. They hail from West Texas and moved here looking for a change in scenery. They strike me as being rather...aggressive. Not mean or ill tempered by any sort, just driven and not meek like most other mice are. I guess a better way to put it would be to say that they are dominant. Ella is pregnant with their first child. She said that they want to get the house done before the child is born. I offered to help them but they refused. They said that they want to build the house themselves. I told them that if they need help to just ask. Edgar scared the hell out of me though. Edgar was moving some debris and uncovered a water moccasin. He just reached down and picked it up. He didn't give a second thought to it when it bit him. He just calmly cut the snake's head off and threw it aside. He kept working like nothing happened. I asked if we needed a doctor for Edgar. They laughed and said that snakes can bite them all they want and it won't hurt them. I'm...impressed. They weren't worried about it so I figured that I'd just come back tomorrow to check on them. I wished them luck and left them to it.

Lilly is still mad but at least she's stopped glaring at me all the time. I am not allowed to go to The Pasture tonight.

December 12, 1891

Ma ushered me out of the house early this morning. She told me to come back at noon. I don't understand what's going on but Ma has a plan. I went by Mr. Harcourt's store and talked with him for a bit. I told him what happened and asked his advice. Once he stopped laughing at me he said, "One thing I've learned about women is that once they close the door that the conversation is over. You can't argue with a closed door after all." He said to give her space and time to calm down. How long does she need though? It's been nearly a week! I stayed and helped out a little until noon when I went home as ordered.

I'm going to tell you what happened in order. It's a bit strange and unorthodox. I had nearly made the steps when Bobby came out. Apparently he was sent out after me. He turned and hollered back, "Ma! Flint's right here!" He then looked back at me and said, "Good Luck". He ran off. Good Luck, that's not a good sign. I entered to find Ma sitting in her chair with a grin on her face. Lilly was sitting on the couch with her friends. They had an evil look about them. Ma stood and said, "Flint, we've decided that ya should be punished. Ya have two choices. Leave forever or face punishment. What do ya choose?" I turned and said, "Well, goodbye!" and I walked towards the door. Lilly yelled to her friends, "Stop him! Don't let him leave!" They ran for the door. I stopped, turned back and smiled. "I see I only have one choice, don't I?" I asked. Ma gave a gruff laugh. I took off my coat, tie, and vest and said, "Well, let's do this." They had me sit in a chair and tied me down. They then took out their makeup and started painting me up. Ma left and came back with a dress and bonnet. She said that I'm going to wear it. I replied, "Like hell I am!" She smiled and said that either I can put it on or she can. I sneered back and said, "Try me". They had to untie me to get the dress on. I took the opportunity to try and make a run for it. Ma caught me though and pulled my shirt off and forced the dress on me. I tried and tried to fight her off but there's just no way. She is much too strong for that. She nearly broke my arm in the process. Once it was on me they tied me back to the chair. Ma held me down the entire time. They looked at me and said that it's nearly perfect just one thing was wrong. They could still see my pants from under the dress. I started to object but Ma came and unfastened them and held me tight while the other girls pulled my pants off. I kept yelling that that was a bad idea. I wasn't wearing underwear. They all got a full view of...me. They stared at it for a few seconds when one asked, "Is that what they look like?" Ma couldn't see what they were talking about and so leaned over to see. She quickly dropped me when she saw what the fuss was and I landed on my back. I was still tied up and so I could neither pull up my pants nor pull down the dress. I was stuck there dangling in all my glory. Ma quickly ushered the girls out and untied me. I put my clothes back on and walked upstairs. I washed up getting most of the makeup off, I got dressed and left.

I'm currently hiding in a bar. I don't want to see anyone right now. This is what happens when people don't listen.

December 13, 1891

I was kicked out of the bar last night. I think I drank my weight in whiskey. I feel like absolute crap. I haven't drunk like this in a long time. I'm not going to write much other than I'm no longer allowed to hire the soiled doves here anymore. Apparently I was too rough.

December 14, 1891

First time I've been home since Saturday. It's after the kids have left for school though. I've already tapped into my private stash of bourbon and have put a sizable dent in it. I'm going to bed.

I was woken by Banit. She asked me to come downstairs. Lilly and her friends were there and looked very sorry. They apologized for things getting out of hand and for everything. I apologized too for walking in on them and for getting so mad and storming off like I did. I asked if we were even and they nodded. They then said goodbye to Lilly and left. As they were leaving I sat down on the couch. I was still trying to put everything together when Lilly sat down in my lap and nuzzled up against me. I just hugged her back and we sat there for a long time. I'm ashamed to admit it but I actually fell asleep at some point but woke before Lilly realized it. I asked her if we could just pretend that nothing happened. She nodded and kissed me on the cheek.

Dinner was quiet again but a good kind of quiet. The kind that tells you that everyone is happy now.

December 15, 1891

Everything's back to normal finally. I walked the kids to school, Lilly held my hand the whole way. Her friends greeted her and teased her a bit for it. Bobby ran off to go play before school, and I, with nothing else to do, napped in the park.

I came home mid-after noon to find Banit sitting on the front steps. She was holding a letter and looked very nervous. I asked her if she wanted to open it. She shook her head. She said that she wanted to open it in front of everyone. So, I told her to go find Grace and Nessa and I'll go get everyone else. We're to meet back here at five o'clock. She smiled and hurried off. I ran and told Mr. Harcourt who made a big fuss about it. He said that he'd get Mr. Brooks. From there I was off to The Pasture. I told Ma and Joey and so we hurried home. Mr. Harcourt and Mr. Brooks were a bit late but everyone was there. Lilly and Bobby were very excited to hear the news. We had Banit stand on the porch and read it to us while we gathered around and watched. We were on pins and needles from the anticipation. Banit stumbled and dropped the letter a couple of times trying to open it but managed. She read from the top.

Ms. Banit Locke, never in our history has one such as you attended our University, and so due to the results of your entry exam and the strong support shown in your favor by Mr. James Harcourt and Mr. Francis Brooks, it is my distinct honor and privilege to welcome our first Indian student. Mr. Locke you are hereby accepted into Tulane University and on behalf of our faculty may I express our enthusiasm and joy to have you join our student body. We look forward to you attendance in the upcoming semester.

She hardly made it through she was crying so hard. She made it! My only qualm, she took my name. Maybe I should not have let her fill out the paperwork. I'm not the only one to catch that. Mr. Harcourt raised an eyebrow at me. Lilly gave me an angry look, and Joey looked at me quizzically. Banit has some explaining to do, but first we celebrated. Banit is going to college. What a wonderful day.

I'm so very glad I get to be a part of this family. Sure there are bad parts but they just make the good parts so much better.
