Chapter 5

Imposter!

August 31, 1891

Last night was the first night in a while that I was able to sleep. I'm starting to feel like my old self. I walked the kids to school and Banit to her lessons. I stayed to watch for a little while. Banit has progressed enough that her lessons are more like conversations than they are actual lessons, although Joey is teaching her arithmetic now as well.

I helped Mr. Harcourt in his shop today. He got some new stock in and asked me to help display it. Jr. never did have an eye for that sort of thing. In return Mrs. Harcourt brought us lunch. Don't get me wrong, Ma is a wonderful cook, but Mrs. Harcourt is a Chef! Best food in town. I'd gladly work in their store if I got to eat her cooking. Oh, Jr. says that she's teaching Ms. Fellows some of her recipes. Lucky bastard, I mean lucky devil.

Back home I busied myself doing some of the housework that needed doing. I was interrupted by the kids. They wanted to finish their homework as quickly as possible so that they could go play. Charlie was quickly at the door, knocking incessantly. I opened the door and before I could say anything she smiled and very quickly said "Hiya mistah! Kin Bobby come out an' play?" I replied "Sure he can, once he finishes his homework. Would you like to come in while you wait?" She cheered and began telling me a story about something or other. Honestly I couldn't understand her. She was prattling on so fast. I don't recall her taking a breath for five minutes. She never sat but instead was very animated about her story, bouncing to and fro and waving her arms around. Bobby finished and introduced her to Lilly. Charlie stuck her arm out to shake hands and said "Hiya Sissy! Glad ta know ya!" Lilly blinked and asked "Sissy?" "Cause ya Bobby's sistah!" She took Lilly's hand and shook it almost violently. We then introduced her to Banit. This was going to be funny. Bobby told her that Banit is an Indian. Charlie lit up and prattled on asking questions so fast that no one understood what she was saying. Banit, bless her, tried so hard to keep up. However Charlie was so fast and was circling her, tugging on this and that never easing up on the questions. Banit got dizzy and had had to sit. She gave me the most puzzled look I have ever seen on anyone. I had to drag Charlie off to get her to stop. I told her that Banit is still learning English and that she can't understand someone talking that fast. Bobby took control and suggested that they go play. Once everything settled Banit looked up at me and said "My head hurts." Lilly replied, "That's ok, so does mine." I nodded saying, "Mine too." I have no idea how Bobby deals with her. Lilly left soon after leaving Banit and me alone. I think she was still reeling from Charlie and about all we did was lounge on the couch.

For some reason, beyond my knowledge, while we were on the couch I pulled Banit over to me and we cuddled. She made some soft cooing noises but didn't say much at all. Both of us had just about dozed off when Lilly surprised us. Lilly gave us angry looks and said "That's not fair!" and forced her way onto my lap. She looked at Banit and said "My turn!" I laughed and Banit scooted closer. I know that she's only teasing Lilly but does she have to be so danged convincing? They got into a bit of a contest. First Banit cuddled my arm, so Lilly did. Banit wrapped my arm around her, so did Lilly. This went on for a while when Banit kissed my cheek. Lilly blushed, but kissed my other cheek. Banit gave Lilly a challenging look then grabbed my head and kissed me on the lips. I started to call the game off when Lilly surprised us. She actually leaned in and kissed me. She missed, kissing my nose as her eyes were shut, but she went for it. I ended the game there. I told them I'm fine with teasing each other but Lilly is too young to be doing that sort of thing. Banit apologized to Lilly and me. Dinner was a bit awkward after that. Bobby didn't know what was going on. I just told him that the girls got in trouble and to leave it at that.

Post script: While writing this Bobby is taking a bath. Banit is downstairs reading a book and I can hear Lilly in her room. She's talking to her doll telling her about kissing me on the lips. I can hear her squeal every now and then. I hope this doesn't cause any trouble.

September 1, 1891

Lilly looked like she didn't get any sleep last night. I think she was thinking about that kiss. I really do hope she doesn't get the wrong idea. The kids left for school and Banit to her lessons. I wandered around when Papel came up to me with a concerned look on his face. He said that there's a warrant out for my arrest up in Chicago. The poster said that I am wanted for robbery and holding up a coach. The dates of the crimes were in the last couple of months. I've been in New Orleans since June. We went to the station and talked to the Chief. He said that the picture is undeniably me. He suggested that I go up and see about clearing up the confusion. He's sending Papel up this afternoon to talk with the sheriff that issued the warrant. I'll be going with him. I've packed my things and told Ma about it. She'll make sure that the kids are taken care of. I've asked Mr. Harcourt to look in on them when Ma's not around.

We're taking the train to St. Louis before we switch rails for one headed to Chicago. We should be there in about a week. Papel told me that the Chief sent a telegram explaining things and saying that we'll be there to clear up the confusion. This is the first time I've traveled with someone. I wonder how he'll be.

Papel is very excited to be on a train. He said that if he couldn't be a policeman that he'd be a train engineer. He loves trains. Papel looks like Bobby when he's got a new toy. He asked me to call him Luke, so I think I'll start referring to him that way. Luke cleans up awfully well. He's got the attention of a couple of young women onboard. He's a bit too shy though. I keep nudging him encouraging him to go talk to them. He keeps looking over and blushing. Kids...ha! I took Luke by the arm and pulled him over to the girls. I introduced us saying "My friend here is a bit shy, but he's nice and would like to get to know you...say...over dinner tonight?" They giggled and agreed. We sat and talked for a while. There was a very cute goat girl named Edna that really seemed to like Luke. They were hitting it off while I talked to her two friends, when they asked what we do in New Orleans. I smiled and said "Papel here is a policeman. He's taking me up to Chicago over a warrant." That earned some giggles and coos. They asked if I was a bad man. I said "I'm so bad I'm wanted in places I've never been." We laughed and joked and generally had a good time. Edna said that she's just finished nursing school and is going to St. Louis to visit her family before moving to New Orleans. She wants to break out on her own. Her friends, Katherine and Betty, were just along for the ride. We talked the rest of the afternoon, through dinner and until dark. We escorted them to their cabin. Afterwards we returned to ours. Luke started turning down for the night but I stopped him. I told him that we have something very important to find out and it must be done tonight.

We exited the cabin and headed down towards the girl's cabin. Edna was there looking out the window, exactly as I expected her to. I told Luke to go talk to her and not to be afraid to get close. He was nervous but was rewarded. She was very glad to talk with him. I left them alone. I'll find out what happens tomorrow. As far as I know they're still talking.

Good luck Luke!

September 2, 1891

Luke didn't come back last night. He must have had a great time. I however enjoyed a good night's rest. There's something distinctly wrong with that statement. Oh well. It's his show now. I'll let him lead.

Ha ha ha! Well, he did have luck in a sense. I found him in the main passenger car on a bench fast asleep with Edna in his arms. It seems that they were up all night and dozed off like that. They're getting a few laughs from the other passengers but the look on their faces says that they're in their own world right now. Edna's friends made a big fuss over them and woke Luke up. He started to panic but didn't want to wake Edna. He was so ripe for teasing. Katherine finally woke Edna, who was very embarrassed to be seen in such a predicament. She started to walk off but turned and said "Good morning Luke, Mr. Locke..." I think she's a bit mad at me. Luke was worried that he'd messed up, but I think they'll be just fine. Looks like the start of a romance. Lilly would get a kick out of seeing this. She adores love stories.

Luke and I had breakfast and soon were off playing poker with some of the other passengers. Luke isn't all that great at cards but he's the luckiest son of a bitch I've ever seen. Now I'm good. I can manipulate the deck and do some great things with it. I just have horrible luck. We played for a couple of hours but stopped when lunch was being served. While we were eating I asked Luke about last night. He said that they talked until sunrise but fell asleep sometime after. He asked if that was bad and if he shouldn't have kept her up that late. He's genuinely worried! I told him that he did the right thing.

A bit after noon Edna and her friends came out. I guess she wanted to sleep a bit more. They sat at a nearby table and Edna kept looking at Luke. He was nervous, so I grabbed his arm and pulled him over there again. I thought it was funny so I repeated, "My friend here is a bit shy, but he's nice and would like to get to know you". I sat him down and excused myself. Not my show. Katherine came over to keep me company. She's a cute little lamb, about 22 or so. I'd hate to ruin her so I kept things civil. Betty chaperoned Luke and Edna. Katherine, Kate, is quite pleasant to talk to. She has a nice soft voice and is very kind. She said that she's going to school to be a librarian and was Edna's roommate. We talked about this and that and nothing much at all. I asked her for Edna's mailing address so that Luke can write her letters. I just know that he won't have the courage to ask her himself. Kate laughed and agreed. Other than talking with Kate I really don't have much to say about today. Oh, we should be arriving in St. Louis in three or four more days. Luke was late getting to the cabin. He looked exhausted. He barely got in before he was fast asleep. I had to undress him and tuck him in like a child. Lord.... If nothing else it'll be good to laugh at.

September 3, 1891

Luke talks in his sleep. He was having dreams about Edna...hilarious.

Luke and Edna had breakfast together today. Kate joined me. I like Kate. She's fun to tease and as I accidentally found out, her fur is so soft. We were walking down an aisle when the train lurched. She lost her footing and I caught her. I make it a point now to bury my face in the bun on top of her head. It annoys her but I just can't resist. It's like cloud and it smells nice too. Betty saw me playing with it and pointed it out to Edna. They called out and said that they do that too. Kate threw a small fit and said that she's going to cut it off it people won't stop playing with it. I couldn't help but laugh. She's adorable when she's angry.

Other than teasing Kate today was much like yesterday. There's really not much to do on a train.

September 4, 1891

Lover boy was up all night again, though he made it back to the cabin sometime around 4 or 5. I let him sleep in. Kate and Betty said that they were up talking all night again. Yup, he's in love. I can't blame him though, Edna is quite fetching. She's just a bit older than him.

Luke woke at about 10. I had to talk with him before Edna came. I asked him what all he did last night and he said that they only talked. I asked if he did anything else. It took him a minute but realized what I was asking. He said, "We can't do that until we're married! That's indecent! I'm not like you!" I'm a bit insulted, still funny though. He got so indignant.

I spent most of the day either talking with Kate or Betty, or playing poker with some of the other passengers. Oh! One older woman commented about Luke saying that she's so enjoyed watching them, and that it reminds her of how her husband was.

September 5, 1891

We're scheduled to be in St. Louis this afternoon. We'll hop on the next train to Chicago there. That should only take a day or two. Kate, Betty and I decided to leave the two of them alone for the day. Betty was getting bored of being a third wheel. She said that those two can't see anything past each other when they get talking. I asked why she was watching them. She said that she and Kate thought that one of them should and Kate won the bet so she had to play nanny to them. Oh, Betty is a cottontail rabbit. She leaned up to me and said "I got so jealous of the two of them being so loving to each other. I even got jealous that Kate had someone to talk to. It's my turn now. Hold me!" I played along. Kate blushed and buried her face in her hands. Betty laughed and laughed. Kate is a very proper person and gets embarrassed easily by such things. I think I'd get along just fine with Betty. She's rather fun.

It's late now. So I have to be brief. I bought us tickets to Chicago leaving Monday. I told Luke that they were the earliest tickets. In all honesty I just wanted him to have an extra day or so to spend with Edna.

September 6, 1891

Luke met Edna's parents today. He was very nervous but they seemed to like him. They do like that he's so honest and helpful. I spent most of the day milling around town. Kate and Betty showed me some of their favorite places. While I've been here many times I can't recall ever having such a pleasant day. I told them about Lilly and Bobby. They gave me a strange look and said that they knew the family. Betty's father was their lawyer and friend and said that when the house burned down that they left many things behind. We went to see her father.

He was so happy to hear that we adopted them. He said that their parents had set up a will and that there were a lot of mementos left behind. He'd been keeping them, hoping that they'd return someday. I told him where the kids were and what they've been up to. He never guessed that Lilly would be a singer, not that she didn't have a voice but because she's shy. I suggested that he go down and listen to her sometime. We talked for a long time about them. He said that he'll gather up everything and have them sent down as soon as he can. I told him not to hurry, and thanked him.

Betty invited me to stay the night so that I won't have to get a hotel. I took her up on that offer.

Post Script: I wonder how Luke's doing.

September 7, 1891

No time to dawdle this morning. I had to hurry to collect Luke and our luggage. It was difficult to get him to say goodbye to Edna. He promised to write to her and she promised to write back. Kids...what do you do? We no sooner got moving that he remembered that he didn't get her address. He was almost in tears. I was too but from laughing. "I don't see what's so funny about this." he cried, "How am I supposed to write her now?" I gave him the address that Kate had given me. He jumped in joy and hugged me so hard it hurt. It was five minutes before he asked me how I got it. He was so happy. Now, I'm jealous.

We made good time. We're expecting to arrive tomorrow a bit after noon according to the conductor. I didn't bother getting a sleeping cabin as it's only a two day trip. I'm starting to wonder if I should have. Luke is already writing his first letter to Edna.

Found a decent poker game. I actually did fairly well. I won $50. Not much else happened. Luke is in his own world and missing out on the fun. Then again I wish I felt the way he does.

September 8, 1891

We made it to Chicago at 12:15. We were only ten minutes late. That's really not bad. I think Luke may be to blame for a few of those minutes. We gathered our luggage and found ourselves a decent hotel. While we want to get this mess straightened out we don't want to show up in traveling clothes. Since we're going to the Police headquarters Luke will be wearing his uniform. I put on my nicer clothes. We sent a message to the headquarters and we're waiting on a reply. It'd be best not to barge in unannounced.

The messenger brought us the response. We're to come at 4. I guess until then we're free. I'd rather not laze around in the room so we headed down to the bar. Luke doesn't drink in uniform but he did have some coffee. He showed me the letter of introduction from the Chief and the sworn statements saying that I was in New Orleans the past few months. While we were going over things a young cat came up and slapped me. She said "Flint! How dare you show your face around here, after what you did!" I turned to correct her but when she saw the scar on my cheek she apologized "I'm so sorry I thought you were someone else you look just like Flint." I smiled and said "Well I should I am Flint, Flint Locke, the REAL Flint Locke." I explained the situation and asked her what she knew about it. She said that an otter came in using my name and seduced her. I'll admit that does sound like me. However he used her to get access to the back room of the hotel and he robbed it. She said that he wasn't as tall as me nor dressed near as nicely as I was. I asked for a description and she said to just look in a mirror. His eyes are brown though and he doesn't have a scar. Oh, she also said that he wore bowler hat. A bowler? Really? I can't stand bowlers. I much prefer my derby or at least a wide brimmed. While we were talking I figured that it'd be best if she introduced me to the hotel manager. He didn't believe me at first but when Luke showed him the papers he understood. He said that he'll pass the word around to the other places that the other "me" robbed. We thanked him and before long it was time for us to go.

At the station I was greeted with suspicion. We couldn't talk with the Chief but did speak with the Assistant Chief Wilson. Wilson read the letter of introduction and the statements. We explained where I've been and what all I've done the past few months. It took a while but he asked for our help in catching the imposter. I told him what the girl at the hotel said about him. He was grateful for the information. He said that he recently robbed a bank on the west side of Chicago. He didn't bother hiding his face and was recognized by several people. There's been a reward offered of $3000 for his capture. Wilson took me into the main office and called the rest of the officers over. He made the announcement that the Flint Locke that they're looking for isn't the real one but could pass for his twin. He introduced me and said that I'm real one and I'm not to be arrested. He pointed out the differences between us and said to pass the word. While he was at it he wrote me a letter of identification so that if I'm stopped I won't be arrested. I asked him about the crimes that the imposter has committed. There's a lot, ranging from muggings, to robbery, assault, rape, and theft. I asked him for a map and we marked where they happened. Most have occurred on the south west side of town. In almost a perfect circle, all within walking distance of the center. I figure that's the best place to start looking.

We left the station and went back to the hotel. It's on the edge of the circle. I asked the manager if he had any old clothes that might fit me. He had everything but a shirt. Luke didn't understand why. I was making a disguise. I had him help cover me with coal dust and I tore some holes in the clothing. When I looked in the mirror I couldn't recognize myself. I had Luke change clothes and stay near the hotel I asked that he keep in touch with the headquarters so we know what's going on. I'll be looking for him but I still don't want to be mistaken for him or have him find me.

September 9, 1891

No luck last night but I did hear some rumors about an otter living a few blocks away. I'll mill around there.

I can't seem to find anything more than rumors. One vagrant said that he's seen an otter coming from an old warehouse nearby. He said that it seemed strange as he was wearing clothes too nice for him to be in a place like that. I'm staking that place out now. So far I haven't seen anything.

No luck. He must move a lot.

September 10, 1891

I returned to the hotel. Luke said that the imposter robbed a man and stabbed him this morning. He was on the other side of the circle. He must have a safe house around here somewhere. I looked at the map and found the location of the epicenter. I'll head there and work my way outwards. The imposter doesn't go far as he's familiar with this area. He has the advantage, but he's making me angry.

September 11, 1891

Again no luck, Luke says that the man that the imposter stabbed is doing alright and is expected to make a full recovery. That's great. I'll keep looking.

September 12, 1891

I saw in the paper that the reward has been increased to $3500. How he has managed to not be caught is beyond me.

I may have found where he's hiding out. There's an abandoned building nearby and it's almost exactly center in the circle. I haven't seen him but there are a lot of the same footprints in the dirt outside. Someone has been coming and going quite often.

September 13, 1891

I saw someone leave that building early this evening. I couldn't see who though, but I did see a bowler hat. That's probably him. I'll keep watch for his return.

September 14, 1891

It's him! I know it. God he looks just like me! I wasn't able to catch him, but I did put a bullet in his leg. He's going to need a doctor to get that out or else he'll die. Either way I'll get him. I had Luke pass the word on to Assistant Chief Wilson. Luke told me that they're sending officers to every doctor, vet, or any facsimile that they know of.

I'm rather tired of being covered in dirt and ash. I'm very ready for a bath. The hotel manager said that I can't bath inside. I can't blame him. I am filthy! He and Luke brought out a tin wash basin and are making me bathe behind the hotel in the alley. I'm waiting on the water. That cat from a last week has offered to help me wash my back. I'm rather looking forward to that.

I feel like a person again! Oh there's nothing like a hot bath. After Cora, that cat, helped bathe me we adjourned to the room. I asked Luke to stay in the station and listen for any news. Really I just wanted some privacy. You can probably guess what happened. I think I may have been a bit rough on her. In my defense she did tell me to have fun. She really likes it when I bite the nape of her neck. We both needed a bath after that.

Post Script: Finally a bed! It's been nearly a week since I've slept in one.

September 15, 1891

Luke brought me a report early this morning. A local doctor said that an otter came in with a bullet wound to the leg. He pulled the bullet out but before he could close the hole the man ran out. The police are looking in that area and have found a blood trail. They've sent their tracking dogs out on the trail. It's only a matter of time.

Ha ha ha!!! So I'm staying in the hotel today. Mainly because it's comfortable, but also because I have Cora here and she's very accommodating. We were in the middle of "getting to know each other" when Luke walked in excited about some news. I've never seen anyone, even Lilly, blush so deeply. He froze, eyes glued on Cora. I smiled and said, "Well, you gonna just stand in the doorway or join in?" Luke stuttered. Cora joined in "Maybe he just wants to watch." He apologized and said that he'll come back in an hour. Cora and I laughed and laughed.

Luke couldn't look at us. He looked at me and said "I thought you were decent people." That kinda hurt. I replied "She may be. I'm not. Don't know what lead you believe that." Luke is so blindingly pure it hurts sometimes. I'd rather not hear a lecture about marriage and chastity so I changed the subject. He said that the dog team flushed the imposter and they have him on the run. Good I'll leave it to them. I just hope that they catch him alive. I want to ask him about why he used my name.

Cora suggested that we try out a nearby restaurant. I was surprised. I was thinking that it was going to be some fancy eatery but it turned out to be a nice family restaurant. Luke treated us. Tomorrow I'll find a nice establishment.

September 16, 1891

I asked around and found a very nice place to eat and made reservations. It has a dress code so it must be good. I don't think Luke has anything to wear so I'll get him something. I need to thank him for his hard work anyways. Luke's report today said that the dog teams are hot on the trail and they almost caught him but he shot an officer. Boy was that a mistake. I'm still leaving it to the police. I have more enjoyable things to attend to today.

I took Luke shopping shortly after breakfast. I found a tailor and brought Luke in to get a tuxedo for tonight. He didn't understand what the fuss was about. I told him to be quiet and hold still. The tailor and I worked out a nice looking tux for him. The tailor said that it'd be ready by mid-afternoon. I'll get Luke cleaned up and return then. Luke isn't bad looking, quite the opposite in fact. He just doesn't do anything to dress himself up. I dragged him to a barber and got his hair cut. I got mine cut down too. People think that I only have fur on my head. I just keep my hair cropped short to match. It's easier that way and harder to grab hold of too. I followed that up with a trip to a bath house. He's never been in one and was a bit nervous about being naked with a bunch of other men. He did enjoy the sauna though. That was followed by lunch, checking in at the station, and then back to the tailor. That tailor is pretty good, doesn't hold a candle to Dutchy, but he is good. Luke couldn't believe his reflection. He cleans up extremely well. He looked over to me and said, "If only Edna could see me like this!" That's true. He was beaming with pride. He smiled and said "Now I know why you always wear those fancy clothes." There's nothing like a well fitted suit. I told him that he should get something made by Dutchy when we get back. We returned to the hotel so that I could change. Luke couldn't stop looking at himself in the mirror. I think I may have created a monster. I got dressed and we made our way down to the lobby. Cora was there waiting. She was stunning. Her white fur was made all the brighter by a shimmering crimson dress. It had a plunging neck lined with ruffles that also came out her elbow length sleeves. She was spectacular. She embarrassingly admitted that she's borrowing the dress from a friend. That doesn't matter, she's still beautiful.

Dinner was wonderful. Luke doesn't know proper etiquette but after a short explanation he was passable. Cora said that she'd only ever dreamed of being able to eat in such a place. Luke commented saying that he didn't know food like this existed. We lived like we were kings tonight. With all of today's fun we turned in early. We're planning on helping out with the chase tomorrow.

September 17, 1891

We're up early today. Luke and I are planning on heading over to the station for permission to help out and to find out what the status is. Hopefully we'll have some good news.

We got permission but no luck. They've stationed policemen at the train stations, livery stables and stage depot but nothing. If he's leaving town he's doing so on foot. I had the idea to get the public involved. Right now were at the biggest newspaper office getting a front page article written. Hopefully this will stir someone to come forward. The editor said that he'll be sure to put this large on the front page.

The dog team has been hot on his heels but every time they get close he shoots at them. So far he's shot one officer and two dogs. This won't end well for him. I'm joining the chase. We're on our way to where they currently are. Just off the shore of Lake Michigan, near an off shooting river.

The team lost his trail. His tracks lead to the river. The trackers on the other side haven't found any tracks. He's an otter and so he'll be a strong swimmer. There's no telling where he'll come up. My guess though is that he went down stream. That's what I would do. The lake is too big to have any good hiding places and there's no way he can cross in his condition. He's going down stream. It's the Calumet River. The water here is disgusting. He'll likely get his leg infected if he's in it. We sent a team down as far as possible on each side and they're working their way up. We should meet and have him trapped. According to the last officer to see him, they lost sight of him ten minutes before we arrived. That means that he can't have gone far. We should at least find his trail if not him.

Just before sunset we found his trail. It's staggering. He's in bad shape and can't have gone far. We're searching the area.

One of the officers found a handgun in an alley nearby. There are four spent cases in it. It must belong to him.

September 18, 1891

We found him! It was nearly dawn but we got him. He had crawled into the basement of a boarding house. One of the boarders heard some noise and found him. He's delirious, and doesn't know what's going on. We got him to a hospital as soon as we could and he's under guard for the time being. I really hope he recovers. I need him alive to clear my name. The doctors are saying that his chances are slim at best. He'd better live.

At any rate we're back in the hotel. I'm waiting on Luke to finish his bath so that I can get one. I'm very much ready for bed. Cora has offered to take our clothing to be cleaned. I'm grateful for that.

It's just past noon now. Luke and I managed to get a few hours of sleep in. Cora said that our clothes should be dry by the end of the day. Luke only brought his traveling clothes and his uniform. He started to put on the tux I bought him but I told him to only wear it for special occasions. I however brought two suits in addition to my tux and traveling clothes, so I had something nice to change into. Luckily I had my favorite blue tie that Lilly made for me. We're checking on the imposter, well, waiting on the doctor to tell us what's going to happen.

A doctor came out and said that they had to take his leg but that he should live. Doc said that while the wound itself wasn't fatal the infection that had taken hold had traveled into his bones. They had to amputate his leg at the knee to save him. Doc is going to keep him there until he can be moved to the jail. He said it should be a few weeks. I asked if I could talk to him but was told that it'll be a few days before he's strong enough for that. I guess I'll just have to wait. It's not like he's going anywhere.

I paid a visit to Assistant Chief Wilson. He said that he sent telegrams out to pull in the wanted posters. He also told me that tomorrow he'll be talking with the newspapers so that they'll inform everyone of the situation. I like Wilson. I know he must be extremely busy but he's taking the time to take care of me. He said that the reward is mine. I told him to use it to pay the doctors and to give any of the remainders to the man that the imposter stabbed.

We don't have much else to do anymore. I guess that means that we can look around. We'll do that tomorrow. I feel like having a drink and playing some poker.

Post script: I forgot to mention. The newspaper editor was true to his word. He really did print the story on the front page.

September 19, 1891

Well I didn't lose that much last night, only $200. I'm sure I can recover that loss easily enough.

Today Luke and I are going to tour the city. Cora has volunteered to show us around. We're waiting on her to finish getting dressed. I spoke with the hotel manager and he said that there's a new show at the big theatre nearby. According to him, a major troupe from New York has come out here to perform. I'd like to see what they're doing. I've asked him to purchase three tickets for us. Oh, before I forget. Since I'm going to be here a while longer and the imposter has been caught I felt that should send word back home. I'd like to hear what's going on anyways. Luke has been sending letters nearly daily to Edna, getting them too. He told me that she'll be moving down to New Orleans at the end of the month and that she already has a job at a hospital lined up. Luke is beyond ecstatic. I think I may have introduced him to his future wife.

Oh, the show tonight was great! Cora showed us around town and we had a grand time. We took a small cruise on Lake Michigan and really enjoyed ourselves. We changed into our tuxedos and Cora changed into a stunning black dress. Dinner wasn't as fancy as it was on Wednesday but it was still very nice. I think we may have been overdressed there but we fit in perfectly at the theatre. The manager somehow managed to get us box seats. We had a great view of the stage and the full orchestra. I've been to quite a few productions, but I have never seen one as extravagant as this. The seats came with complimentary champagne. This has me worried about the cost. I hope he didn't break me on the tickets. Luke had a bit too much to drink but was manageable and didn't make a fuss. We boarded a coach to take us back to the hotel.

September 20, 1891

Cora interrupted me while I was writing last night. She didn't want to be alone. Luke had fallen hard asleep so we moved him onto the floor next to the bed. We went at it for a long time before we finally tired and fell asleep. I found something out about her this morning though. She's quite the prankster. This morning she suggested that we move him back into bed and take his clothes off. We did and she crawled in and cuddled up next to him. He woke a few minutes later and couldn't believe his eyes. He looked at me giving me a look begging for an explanation. I told him "Luke you're quite demanding when you've had a few drinks. I can't believe some of the things you made us do." Cora purred and added "I'm not exactly pure but even I didn't know that you could do that." Luke panicked and started to run away. I had to tackle him. It took both of us to hold him down. I think the fact that the three of us were naked only fueled his panic. It was nearly an all out fight to get him to understand that we were just playing a joke on him. He's been pouting ever since.

We're more or less on our own today. Luke wanted to go to Church and Cora said that she's busy. I guess I'll mill around and see what I can stir up.

I'm finding that unless you're spending money on entertainment, Chicago isn't all that fun. I'm getting bored.

I swung by the hospital to check on the imposter. He's in and out of consciousness but when he's awake he's coherent. Doctor's had been asking his name. He was continuing to call himself Flint Locke. That is until I walked in. When he saw me he immediately knew who I was. I finally got him to tell me his real name, Roger Edwards. Edwards told me that he saw me in St. Louis back in June and heard my name. He thought that using my name would somehow protect him. He believed that the law would come looking for me instead as we look almost identical. He didn't know that I'd come looking for him. He begged me to kill him, he didn't want to go to jail and he didn't want to live without his leg. I said, "Whether you go to jail or live isn't up to me. It's up to the judge. You'll have to talk with him." Edwards got desperate and tried to ask me something but he fell unconscious. I left him like that. I'm done talking with him anyways. I found out what I wanted to know.

I ended up spending the rest of the day walking the streets just looking around. Nothing of any real interest was going on so it was very boring. Good thing the hotel has a nice bar.

September 21, 1891

This morning Luke and I went by to talk with Wilson. I told him what Edwards told me. He laughed he said it figures that's how he learned my name. We discussed him and what we do from here. Wilson said that I'm free to go home so long as I agree to come testify at the trial. That sounds reasonable enough so that'll be our plan. I filled out a sworn testament and gave Wilson my card so that he can contact me. Luke did the same.

Speaking of Luke, he got a letter today from Edna. She said that she'll be leaving for New Orleans on the 28th. He looks like he could fly right now he's so happy. He just had to tell me all about the latest happenings with Edna. Try as I might I just couldn't escape. An hour later and I finally had an opening. I managed to distract him and I got away. I figured it'd be best if we leave as soon as possible. I went by the train station and got us the earliest tickets. Unfortunately the earliest passenger train to St. Louis leaves tomorrow morning at about 10. We're stuck here until then. I suppose I should go say goodbye to Cora. It's the proper thing to do.

I found Cora doing her shopping. I helped her out by carrying the load back to her apartment. She lives in a small but nice apartment across the street from the hotel I've been staying at. She works there as a bookkeeper. We spoke for a while over coffee and I told her that we're leaving tomorrow. She's sad to hear that but it's not like I can stay here. I have two little and one clumsy responsibilities back home.

September 22, 1891

I spent the night with Cora, much to the displeasure of her neighbors. By dawn they were ready for me to leave. Sorry. I met Luke in the hotel lobby and told him that we're leaving today. He was a bit taken aback by how sudden this was but he was ready to go home too. I talked with the manager about the hotel bill. I didn't see the tickets listed on the bill. He said that since we caught the man that robbed them that the tickets were on him. I thanked him and Luke and I split the bill. We headed back upstairs and had almost finished packing when the manager came by. He said that he had a telegram for me. It was from Ma. She said that they were doing well and are glad to hear that we caught the imposter. Banit and the kids ask everyday when I'll return. Ma said that she needs my help. Banit has been worse than usual. Somehow that makes me want to take my time coming home.

While we were packing, Cora ran off and made some lunches to take with us. I really like her. I told her to look me up any time she comes down to New Orleans. At the train station Assistant Chief Wilson came to see us off. He thanked us for our help and offered us a job if we decide to move up here. I graciously declined. I really don't want to work. I much prefer my way of doing things. We left and were on our way home. I've got a surprise for Luke.

September 23, 1891

Since we left fairly late yesterday we're not expecting to arrive in St. Louis until tomorrow afternoon. Therefore, I'm busying myself with poker and other distractions. Luke is such a child he somehow managed to talk the conductor into letting him up into the engine. A little while ago I heard some very enthusiastic whistling, I can only imagine that's Luke's doing. I hope he never loses that childlike streak of his.

Luke made it back to the cabin with the biggest grin. He was so excited to get to do that. He told me that despite the circumstances that this is the best time he's ever had.

September 24, 1891

We're arriving today. Luke is somehow even more excited that he was yesterday. I didn't know that was possible! I didn't give him a chance to tell Edna that we're coming. Our plan is for him to surprise her at her doorstep. That's when I'll unveil my surprise.

Luke can hardly sit still. We arrived and are taking a coach to her house. I'm not sure but I think that each and every time Luke asks if we're there yet, the driver slows down a little bit more.

After a rather amusing ride we arrived. Thank God! We no sooner stopped than Luke was out the door running up to Edna's house. The driver looked at me and asked if it was Luke's first time in love. I laughed, "Couldn't tell you, but definitely the biggest one of his life." We stayed by the coach watching. Edna came running out the door and flew into Luke's arms. They hugged and crooned to each other for what seemed like five minutes. I walked up to them and was greeted with a hug. Edna thanked me for bringing Luke back to her. I smiled and said, "You're very much welcome, but you should save your thanks for later. I have a surprise for you two." She looked at me quizzically. "We're not in a rush to get back so I thought that maybe we could escort you to New Orleans. It's better to travel with someone you know." They both were ecstatic and thanked me profusely. She invited us in for tea but I declined. I don't want to feel like a voyeur. I need to get me a hotel anyways. She told me that her ticket is for the 28th so once I've gotten a room I'll get our tickets. I excused myself and left Luke in her hands and his luggage on her porch. I boarded the coach but as I had it all to myself I climbed up and sat with the driver. He was a cantankerous old turtle. However he had a good sense of humor. Honestly, I've only talked to a turtle a couple of times but they always seem grouchy to me.

I was delivered to a good hotel in town and got myself a room. It was surprisingly nice. I was told that they have a bar and pool hall in back and that there's a good restaurant across the street. I like billiards. I don't get a chance to play it all that often so I think I'll spend some time there.

I more or less just lounged around except for dinner so there's not much to talk about.

September 25, 1891

I had a good time today. I wandered around this morning. I ended up at the riverboat docks and had a great idea. Instead of a cramped train, why don't we take a riverboat? It'd be much more comfortable. I rented a horse from the stable and rode over to Edna's house. Luke was still there. We talked for a while before I was able to ask about the riverboat. They said that they've never been on one before. That settles it. We're taking one. I was off soon there after and I got Edna a refund on her train ticket and got us riverboat tickets. It should take about a week for us to arrive. Only about a day longer than by train but it's worth it. We leave first thing Monday morning.

After I purchased tickets, I walked the docks and managed to get myself into a craps game. The trick isn't to throw or roll the dice. It's to slide them off your fingers. I'm fairly good at craps and made $150 by the end of the game. I spent the rest of the day milling about and playing pool. I did not play for money. I'm not good enough for that but it was still fun.

September 26, 1891

Somehow I ended up at a baseball game. I don't really care for baseball that much but it was still fun and a good way to waste the better part of a day. A spectator was carted off after getting hit by a foul ball and knocking him out. That must have hurt. While it was a foul ball it was still a hard, solid hit.

Again I played pool for most of the afternoon. I'm really enjoying it.

September 27, 1891

Luke came and fetched me early this morning. He says I'm going to Church, that I NEED to. Ugh...I don't mind Church, just so long as I don't have a hangover. I ended up spending a good portion of last night in the bar.

Luke got himself all dolled up for Edna, wearing that tuxedo I bought him. She approves greatly. I wore by better suit and my usual blue tie. Kate was there, so was Betty, therefore I had someone to talk to. The services were decent although I slept though half of them.

We ended up having a picnic afterwards at a nearby park. We set up under a large oak tree and had a good lunch. Edna is a fair cook. Kate was sitting with her back to the tree and her legs out stretched. I couldn't resist. I put my head in her lap. She is so soft! I was quickly asleep again. When I woke Kate was petting my head and humming a song. Betty was using my stomach for a pillow. Luke and Edna were off in a rowboat on the small lake. Today was beautiful.

September 28, 1891

We had a rather emotional departure this morning. Edna's family and friends all came out to wish her luck and say goodbye. I was talking with Kate and Betty when Betty reached up and kissed me. Kate blushed and buried her face in her hands again. I'm sure that Betty loves to tease Kate like that. I hugged them goodbye and kissed Kate on her cheek. I hate to say it but, she looked at me sheepishly and smiled. No pun intended I just can't think of a better word. We said our goodbyes and we were off.

I got two neighboring rooms. Luke and I will stay in one and Edna will have the other. Luke is rather mesmerized by the paddlewheels. They spent most of the day on deck. I've been on this route countless times so this is nothing new to me. Only thing different is that I'm not working. It's a bit strange being on a boat as a guest. I'm going to enjoy this.

September 29, 1891

I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it too much last night. I have such a hangover. I'm never drinking again.

Lunch was great. It's nice to have an actual meal instead of what I've usually eaten on these boats. I have no idea where Luke and Edna have disappeared to. Anyways, I'm still shaky from last night so I'm going to spend the rest of the day lounging on deck.

I found the lovebirds. They were so daring. They held hands in public! How scandalous! Ha ha ha!

I think it's about time for a drink. I discovered a good book so I'm going to get me a glass of bourbon, get me a good cigar, and a comfortable place to read.

What a good book. "The Cruise of the Alerte" by Edward F. Knight, I was really surprised by it. It's such a nondescript book but I'm really enjoying it. It's a newly published book too, only released last year. I lost track of time and it's actually quite late now. I think I'm going to call it an early night and head off to bed.

Post Script: I don't smoke often maybe have a cigar a handful of times a year. Dreadful habit but it is enjoyable.

September 30, 1891

Luke woke me up this morning nearly in tears. They had their first fight. He said that they were talking about kids and how many they want to have. He said that he wants two or three but she wants a big family and wants five or six or more. He's worried that he's upset her and that she won't like him anymore. I just rolled over and said "Is that all? Don't wake me unless it's something important." I probably could have handled that better.

Anyways, I'll be spending today in the casino. I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully I won't lose much today. These riverboat casinos can be a bit crooked at times.

I learned quickly, don't play poker here. The dealers cheat, hard. They have Faro but that's a game for suckers. Instead I watched the roulette table. I noticed that the wheel is a bit unbalanced. It leans towards numbers 20, 7, and 11. Those are the ones that should be betted on. I usually start by betting on the lines, then move to the dozens. However I wanted to experiment on the table. I bought in $100 worth of chips and put $20 on 20, 7, and 11. I played 5 rounds and won 3 times. At 35-1 odds I came out with a couple thousand dollars. The house caught on quickly though and swapped wheels. The new one was well balanced so I couldn't play it the same way. I moved on to other games. Most were crooked. The only fair game was game of "go fish" some kids were playing. I decided that I'd like to keep my money so I cashed out and left. I can entertain myself well enough to not want to be cheated.

Luke saw me leave the casino and said that he wanted to go play. I told him about them cheating. He changed his mind. He and I spent the rest of the day lounging about. Edna was taking advantage of the bath and massage parlor. When she was done she came out looking refreshed and relaxed. She thanked me for getting us on the boat instead of a train.

I took Luke drinking. He's a bit of a lightweight but he's a goofy drunk. He had a few too many and so I took him out on the deck to get some air. We ended up under Edna's window. When Luke saw her he started reciting love poems dedicated to her. For a drunk he's quite good at professing his love through poems. I ended up sitting on a deck chair trying my hardest not to laugh. Edna tried and tried to get him to quiet down. She begged me to help. I refused, it was much too entertaining. He even started quoting Shakespeare! Ha ha ha!! She finally had enough when a crowd started to gather. She got dressed and came down. He never missed line. She came and tried to quiet him but ended up grabbing his arm and dragging him off. Much to the delight of the spectators, who cheered him on and wished him luck.

Post script: I'm going to take him drinking more often!

October 1, 1891

Edna was a bit mad at me this morning. I can't blame her though. We all know that she loved the poetry. Luke remembers it all. He said that he can't recall any of the poetry when he's sober so he doesn't understand how he remembered it when he was that drunk. Only God knows the answer to that.

Luke has become rather famous on board. He's earned the moniker "Casanova". I suppose it's well enough that he didn't start singing. I don't think I could have survived that one. Ha!

He and Edna laid low for most of today. She's forbidden him from drinking with me. He's agreed. No! Don't let her lay down the law now! She'll own you for rest of your life that way!

I spent the day milling about. We should arrive some time Saturday. So we're making good time.

October 2, 1891

I found me a distraction for the day. I met a lovely kangaroo. Her name is Mattie. She's on vacation from Australia. I've never seen a kangaroo before. She has such a unique accent. We swapped stories of what it's like in our homelands and hit it off quite well. She said that she first came to California and has traveled overland and is heading east. She wants to make it to New York before leaving for England. Her goal is to travel around the world. I'm impressed. She's definitely one of the most interesting people I've talked to. She invited me to her cabin for coffee. I don't recall ever so much as smelling any. I love her tail. It gives me something strong to hold onto. We've been at it since noon and I think it's close to midnight now. We're taking a short break.

Anyways, today is gone and we should be arriving tomorrow.

October 3, 1891

We've arrived. I said goodbye to Mattie as she's off to venture around town. Luke and Edna are off getting themselves situated. I am looking forward to getting home and seeing everyone. I hate to admit it but I was missing the family.

I was greeted like a returning hero. Banit saw me first. She came running out the front door. I don't know if she meant to or not but she missed the first step and fell into me knocking me to the ground. We laid there laughing and hugging. Lilly and Bobby were next and they jumped in. I know I've only been gone a month but I swear that Lilly and Bobby got taller, especially Bobby. Ma was working at The Pasture, so once we got settled and I got my things inside we headed over.

I managed to get all the way inside before Ma spotted me. She came running over to hug me. Much to the detriment of a patron and the chair he was sitting on. Both were sent flying. She just about broke my back as she hugged and bounced me around. One thing about Ma, when she hugs you, she sweeps you off your feet. She carried me around the saloon to make sure I greeted everyone. The kids were laughing and joining in. Banit grabbed hold of my tail and was pulled along for the ride. It took a couple of hours for everyone, Ma, to calm down and get them caught up on what happened. I promised Ma that I'll be sure to comeback tonight with Lilly and we'll have a party. I swear Ma looks like she's floating she's so happy I'm back.

Well, I got my luggage unpacked and got myself cleaned up. Lilly put on her best dress as did Banit. Heck even Bobby cleaned up. This is one of the few times he's allowed in The Pasture while it's open. I think Ma is a bit stricter with him than she was with me. We left and stopped by Mr. Harcourt's store and said hello. I'll come back tomorrow and talk with him. We did the same with Mr. Brooks. Henry was on guard with Banit around. He still hasn't forgiven her. We couldn't help but notice that The Pasture was quite a bit livelier than usual. It truly was a party when we entered. Joey and Alice were up on stage dancing while Ms. Fellows played a jaunty song. The patrons joined in and were either dancing or singing along. We had such a big party. Lilly was quickly up on stage singing. Bobby was dancing with Banit and Ma was helping out at the bar. I tried to help but Ma stopped me. She called Joey over and ordered her to dance with me and keep me from working. Ma is so strange sometimes. Oh well, who am I to turn down such an offer? I danced with Joey for a while before I was pulled off to dance with someone else, and so on. I ended up cutting in and danced with Banit. Bobby almost looked relieved. That is until Joey grabbed his hand and danced with him. He was blushing deeply but did quite well. He's a fairly good dancer. Joey will make him a great one. Wish I could say the same for Banit. She keeps tripping. There's an easy solution to that though. I made her stand on my feet and we danced that way. When it was time for Lilly's break I made sure to dance with her. It's a bit awkward dancing with someone so short but it worked out. Like her brother she's surprisingly good. I can tell that she's been taking notes from Joey.

Funny thing happened. Bobby was talking with a young deer. At first I though it was a buck but I soon found out it was a doe. It was hard to tell the difference with her. Her name is Tristan. She was sitting on the end barstool and was enjoying the show. I talked with her for a while. She's a bit of a drifter but I though she was rather fun. It's strange seeing a woman wear pants though, and a Schofield. Bobby, bless his heart, almost got her hurt. He's never seen a Schofield before so he asked if he could see it. Tristan said "Sure" unloaded it and then handed it to him. Ma didn't see her unload it. She saw Tristan hand Bobby a gun. She came up behind her furious. I though she was about to kill Tristan! I tried to stop her but I ended up grabbing Tristan and pulling her out of danger. I told Ma that the gun was unloaded. Ma was still really mad and told us to go home. It was just about bedtime for him. So, we left. We walked Bobby home and sent him up to bed. Tristan and I sat on the front porch talking. She's hilarious. While chatting I asked if she had a place to stay. She didn't so I offered to let her stay the night here. She refused saying that it might be a bad idea if Ma saw her there. She does have a point. When Ma gets mad she stays that way for a day or so. "Not a problem. Not my first time sleeping under the stars." She gave me a sly grin and added, "Besides, you look like you'd try to sneak in bed with me." Damn, am I that obvious? I can't really deny that though. We laughed and told more stories. I really do like her. I'd be happy to have her as a friend. I saw Banit and Lilly coming, so I said goodnight to Tristan and sent her on her way. I did invite her to come back to The Greener Pasture sometime. She tipped her hat at me. That's not right! That's my bit!

The girls were exhausted. I helped them upstairs and they were fast asleep. I will be too as soon as I'm done here.

October 4, 1891

Today was a typical Sunday. I was surprised to find that the Preacher wasn't mean to me. I guess he's finally easing up. It's only been sixteen years. Being as this is the first Sunday of the month we had Communion and a luncheon afterwards. After we ate I had a chance to talk with Mr. Harcourt. He likes to keep up with my antics. I told him about Edwards and everything that happened. I also told him about Luke and Edna. He's such a sap. He likes love stories.

Speaking of Luke and Edna, they came to Church today and were the talk of all the gossipers. It won't take long before the entire city knows about them. I swear they're faster than telegrams. As soon as we were home, Lilly wanted to know everything. It was as good as a time as any so we sat in the living room and I told them about my trip. All Lilly seemed to care about was Luke and Edna. Bobby liked me wearing a disguise and tracking Edwards down. Banit was interested in the theatre. I'll have to take her to one sometime, she really enjoys story telling and that's basically what theatre is. Ma's just glad that everything is settled.

It's so nice to be home. It's a bit boring at times but there's no place like it.

October 5, 1891

I walked the kids to school and took Banit to her lessons. I've seen a remarkable improvement with her. Other than her accent, she speaks English as if she was born into it. She still needs help with bigger words and with reading but that's understandable. I suppose being surrounded by people that speak English and that are willing to teach her helps.

Early this afternoon I received a telegram from Assistant Chief Wilson in Chicago. He said that they had a hearing for Edwards and set the trial for November 2nd. That could be problematic. Jr.'s wedding is on the 14th. Hopefully it won't take long.

I met the kids and walked them home today. I probably shouldn't have. Lilly's friends got all worked up and started making kissing noises and faces at her. She turned to snap at them but I put my hand under her chin and kissed the top of her head while looking her friends in the eye. They got very quiet. We turned to head home and Lilly wrapped her arm around mine. When we got home she thanked me and ran inside. I'm fairly certain that we made her friends very jealous.

Oh! I almost forgot. One of our neighbors is moving. They're heading out to California to try the gold mines. I wish them well. That's not exactly my kind of work but if you do well you can do very well. From what I understand their house has already been sold and so we'll have a new neighbor soon.

October 6, 1891

Cloudy day, I think it may rain soon. Other than that today was quiet for me. Lilly on the other hand had a great day. Her friends were all a buzz about that little kiss yesterday. She said that she got to really hold it over her friends who haven't even held a boy's hand yet. I don't think I count. Lilly is like my own daughter. Not that she see's it that way, I'm sure. I earned myself one bunny sitting in my lap hugging me. Jeez...

Banit made dinner. She's been watching Lilly and Ma cook and said that she wanted to try all by self. Lilly tried to help but Banit shooed her from the kitchen. I was a bit worried but it was good! Very good! Only help she allowed was to get the food to the table. Lilly is a decent cook but her food tends to be very bland, Ma's too. Banit however uses more spices and sautéed some stew meat. She made something I've never seen before. It was very good though. Even Lilly and Bobby enjoyed it. I may have eaten too much. I'm fairly miserable and enjoying it right now.

October 7, 1891

That book I was reading on the riverboat, "The Cruise of the Alerte", I never finished. I'm looking for it in the book stores. So far I haven't had any luck.

I wasn't able to find a copy in town but I placed an order for one through a nearby bookstore. That got me thinking. We have many lakes and rivers, not to mention being a port city on the gulf. Having a small boat might be fun. Bobby and I can try out different fishing spots and possibly I can take the family out for a day on a small cruise. It wouldn't take much. No more than a twenty foot boat and a small sailing rig. I can easily pay storage fees at a marina. Shouldn't me more that a couple dollars a month for something of that size. I'll look into it. I think it'd be a lot of fun and with fall coming, it'd be a good time to buy as people may not want to pay for over winter storage. I wonder how hard that'll be. If I do get my own boat, does that make me a captain? Captain Locke, scourge of lonely maidens. Ha! I'll head down to the yacht club and ask around.

October 8, 1891

Today is Ma's day off and so she demanded that we go shopping together after the kids get back. She said that Bobby has almost outgrown his pants and both of them need new shoes. That usually means that it's my turn to buy them things. Banit wants to come along too. She could use her own apron if nothing else. She's been borrowing either one of Ma's or Lilly's, neither fit her. That would also cut down on the washing.

A large crate arrived at noon today. It's from Betty's father in St. Louis. He finally sent their belongings down. Ma and I agreed that we shouldn't tell them about it until we get back from shopping. We made Banit promise not to tell. We moved it to the back porch and hid it for the time being.

Shopping was fun. Bobby is a typical boy and just wanted to go play. It didn't help that Charlie and Will were out front hollering for him to come out. I promised him that as soon as we got him some shoes and some new pants that he could go play. He looked down and kicked a rock saying, "okay..." Lilly however loves shopping. She poured over the latest shoes and dress styles. Banit tried to keep up but got confused by some of the accoutrements. She looked to me for help but I don't know anything about women's clothing except how to remove it. Ma grunted. She really doesn't care about such things and instead got Bobby situated with what he needed. I looked around and found some aprons. I showed them to Banit who picked out the frilliest one she could find. It actually looked pretty good on her. Lilly loved it and got a matching one with blue trim, Banit got the pink trimmed one. I think Banit feels like she's being a burden. I see her sometimes wanting things but afraid to ask. She does have money. Ma's holding on to it for her. She found a choker with a small dragonfly pendant that she liked. She put it back though. I asked the clerk to hide it in the bag and that I'll pay for it. Banit doesn't have much in the way of jewelry, so I think she's earned it. She is keeping the house very clean.

We returned home and Ma got started on dinner. The girls went upstairs to put away their new clothes. I heard them talking about something and then Banit came downstairs holding the choker. She said that it must have fallen in the bag and that she was going to return it. I laughed and stopped her. She was speechless when I told her I had bought it for her. She ran over and hugged me. She said that she loves bah-she-tah-num-bah, we call them dragonflies. She hurried upstairs to put it on but tripped a few times going up the stairs. Ma gave me an approving grunt and a hard pat on the back.

After dinner it was time for Lilly and Bobby's package. Ma and I carried it into the living room. We opened it and there was a letter for me inside. I took that and left them alone. Ma took Banit and joined me on the front porch. I felt that they should have some privacy for this. The letter read,

Mr. Locke,

I can't thank you enough for taking care of these children. Their father was a dear friend of mine and I was heartbroken to hear of what happened to them. I can only hope that those dear children can find some comfort and closure with what was left behind. Included is something that I could not send. Their father left behind some considerable assets. I have transferred money to a bank in their name. If you show them the attached letter they will give it to you. It is a total sum of $25,000. This is both of their savings as well as the money from the selling of their land. I ask that you set up an account with the bank so that they can have this money when they need it.

Again I thank you,

Richard Smith

I don't know what to say. Of course I'll set up an account for Lilly. Bobby already has one. I no sooner finished reading that the kids came out. Bobby climbed up into Ma's lap, Lilly into mine. We carried them inside and held them while they cried. I won't say anything more about that. I don't think it'd be right to.

Post script: We let the kids sleep together tonight. Of course that means that Lilly climbed in bed with Bobby and me.

October 9, 1891

Ma and I thought that it'd be best to act normally. Things were a bit emotional last night and they can use some normalcy. Therefore, Ma made them breakfast and walked them to school like normal. I slept in as I normally do. That may have been a mistake. As I came downstairs I could smell something cooking. The kids were at school and Ma always heads to The Pasture after walking them there. That's when I saw her, Banit, cooking breakfast wearing her new apron and choker, nothing else. I was about to say something but I couldn't find the words. Honestly I was rather mesmerized by the sight of her. She'd smile and shake her tail at me. I've never seen anything like it. I really can't complain one bit. She served breakfast and then hung up her apron. She sat across the table from me and quietly ate, all the while smiling and rubbing her feet up and down my legs. I tried to eat but things were getting a bit...uncomfortable. I swear she knows exactly what drives me crazy. Somehow I managed to finish eating. She put her apron back on and started washing the dishes again always smiling and shooting me glances. I knew what she was thinking. Sad part is I was thinking it too. I came up behind her and put my arms around her waist and kissed the back of her neck. She turned around and said "Nope, not today." As she coyly walked off. I couldn't understand it. She's always the aggressive one. I was left in a bit of a predicament. She went into the living room and started cleaning, again only wearing the apron and choker. She'd bend over to pick something up and make a show of fanning her tail feathers. She'd stretch out to reach an upper shelf and hop up and down. I couldn't leave, but she was driving me insane with what she was doing. This went on all day. Every time I'd make an advance she'd stop me and go off to do something else. She only got dressed when school was letting out. I thought I finally had a reprieve. I was wrong. While the kids worked on their homework, Banit would walk by and brush me with her tail feathers. Once she "tripped" and ended up in my lap. My only hope was The Pasture. Then Ma came by and told Lilly to take the night off and asked me to watch them tonight. I agreed and when I looked at Banit she gave me and evil, seductive smile. Damn it! I'm focusing on writing this to keep from being teased by her. Evil!

Lilly was quick to catch on that something wasn't right. I told her that Banit caught me doing something stupid and she's teasing me about it. Today can't end fast enough.

October 10, 1891

I did not get any sleep last night. I kept having nightmares about a certain blue jay that haunts me in aprons.

Today is Saturday. That means that the kids will be home, so Banit can't tease me. Or so I thought. Bobby was quickly out the door this morning to go play. Lilly was going shopping with her friends. Ma was working. I was tired so I slept in. Banit woke me by sitting on my stomach. She wasn't wearing anything. I was very awake when I saw her. She smiled and said "Ah-ah emay is awake now? Good!" She hopped off and bounced out the room. God help me.

That's how she spent the morning while I was getting dressed. She even came in while I was showering. She didn't put a scrap of clothing on until she saw that I was getting dressed to leave. She too got dressed and followed me.

Being out on the town I should have had some relief. However she hung off of my arm constantly rubbing on me. We went to a few different stores and I remembered that I wanted to go look at boats. We got on a trolley and headed to the lake. I thought something was strange when she sat across from me. I found out why soon enough. She wasn't wearing anything under her skirt. She showed me and winked at me giving me a sly grin. Oh! This girl is evil incarnated! We finally made it out to the marina and I was able to distract myself with boats. I found one that would suit my purposes very well, an eighteen foot Whitehall with a freestanding mast. The man I talked to about it said that he was getting rid of it in favor of something larger. I liked it and he was nice enough to take us out on the water with it. He showed me the basics of how to sail and I was quickly sailing to and fro. Surprisingly Banit was too. She loved it and kept asking him how the wind moves the boat. Before long we had her at the helm and were moving at a good pace. We got into a bit of an argument over who was faster. I may have to invest in a couple of small racing dinghies for us instead. We had a great time. Banit forgot all about teasing me and enjoyed herself. Unfortunately there were no boats for sale so I'll have to keep looking.

We had lost track of time and it was getting fairly late. We got on the trolley and headed home. We missed dinner and there was a note on the table. It said that Bobby is staying at the Warren house and Lilly wanted to sing tonight. That left Banit and I alone. I was hoping I could keep her distracted by talking about the boats. That didn't work. She cooked dinner wearing her apron again. She really should wear something under that. After dinner I sat on the couch trying to read. She came and curled up in my lap. Why is she doing this to me?

October 11, 1891

Well, I found out why she was teasing me so. She wanted to make sure that I was worked up enough to not refuse her. It worked. She "dropped something and was down on her hands and knees looking for it. She kept wiggling her buttocks at me. I broke down. It was more than I could stand. I couldn't get my cloths off fast enough. I almost forgot to pull out a couple of times. I had to help her bathe afterwards. I was a bit rough. She slept hard. Luckily I had her in bed asleep and was bathing before Lilly came home. She would never forgive me if she caught us.

Even I though that I needed to go to Church today. Lilly was still giving her friends grief over the kiss. Before she ran off to play she almost made a show of hugging me. Ma saw this and smacked the back of my head. She told me to knock off the shenanigans. Why am I being punished? This is all Lilly's doing! Jeez...

I finally had a reprieve from Banit. Joey came by and asked her to go shopping with her. She wasn't sure but Ma gave her some money and told her to have fun. Bobby was changing into his play clothes so I thought that I'd do the same. He ran off to play and I was off wandering around. About an hour later I found Bobby sitting on a fence by himself. He said that the Warren boys and Will were grounded for breaking a window yesterday and Charlie is spending the day with her family and can't play. I was bored as well, so I suggested that we go do something. He wanted to go to the park and play ball. It sounded good so I went with him. We played for a few hours before taking a break under a shade tree. The weather is finally cooling off a bit so the shade was very comfortable. We both ended up leaning against the tree napping. I woke a while later and saw a strange man watching us. I didn't think that was right so I went to confront him about it. Turns out that he's an artist and was painting us. He's really good. I just can't remember his name for the life of me. I talked with him for a bit while he painted and before too long Bobby woke. He came over to see what we were doing and was very intrigued by the artist. The artist explained what he was doing while Bobby listened intently. Bobby is good at drawing. With a little help he could be great. I'd help but I'm not artistically inclined. He told Bobby that when he was young he would get a sketch pad and pencil and walk around drawing what he saw. That led him to painting, and now he works for different companies designing advertisements. This could be a good hobby for Bobby. He said that if we wanted it that he'd give us the painting as soon as it was finished. Of course I want it. It's coming out great. I gave him my card and told him to contact me when he's done. We left him and Bobby begged me for a sketch pad. We looked around but couldn't find one. We went back to the park to ask the artist but he had already left. I thought that if anyone would know where to find one, Mr. Harcourt would know.

Mr. Harcourt did indeed know and sent us over there. Bobby bought a sketch pad and some pencils. The clerk showed Bobby a couple of trick to blend and get different textures in his drawings. Bobby was a bit nervous but excited to have actual artist supplies. We returned home and he was quickly curled up on the couch drawing. I left him to his work and sat on the porch.

The new neighbors are moving in today. I'll go introduce myself later when they have a chance to get their things situated. From the looks of it, the new neighbors are a man and wife. Both are bears of some sort. I haven't had many dealings with bears. The only one I can recall was a bounty I collected. I'm a bit surprised, usually bears like to live further north where it's cooler.

Today was a good day.

October 12, 1891

You know just for a change of pace. I didn't do a damn thing today, outside of helping the kids with their homework.

October 13, 1891

Today was much like yesterday except I went to The Pasture and had some drinks. Tristan was there. Ma doesn't care for her too much but tolerated her. We talked and played cards some. But this being the middle of the week it was fairly quiet.

October 14, 1891

A runner came by today. The book I ordered came in and is ready for me to pick it up. That's good. I can't stand not finishing a book, even a bad one. This one is fairly interesting though. I hurried over and paid for it and came back home. I curled up and read a good portion of it.

October 15, 1891

I couldn't help it. I had to do it. I caught a cricket and put it between the pages of Bobby's sketch pad. After he finished his homework he opened it to work on his drawing and the cricket jumped out at him. It startled him and I laughed. Lilly did too. He got a bit mad and kicked my shin. It was worth it.

October 16, 1891

I got a telegram today from Wilson. He said that I won't be needed for the trial. Edwards tried to escape but opened up his wounds and bled out. He never made it out of the hospital. I feel bad for him but at the same time that was all his own doing. I sent a telegram back thanking him for letting me know.

I talked with Ma and asked her if she was able to get Lilly a bank account. She said that she's been too busy. I took it upon myself to do that for her. I made sure to put my and Ma's name on the account just in case. The bank was more than happy to transfer the money and split it between her and Bobby. I got to thinking about it and I realized that now Lilly has about half as much money as I do, and Bobby has more. I need to remedy that. First I need to talk with Lilly about her account. Ma has been paying her a little but has also been keeping her money for her. Now that she has a bank account with quite a bit of money I need her to be responsible with it. First things first I went back to The Pasture and gave Ma the account information. She said that she'll deposit Lilly's pay for her now on. She hurried me off so that I could walk her home. I met Lilly just as she was leaving school. I told her of her account and what Ma will do now. I also gave her the bank card and account packet. She smiled at me and said that she's going to save it for college. I don't think she realizes just how much money she has. Then again if she wants to save it then I'm not going to stop her. Although I can't stand the fact that Bobby has more than me. Tomorrow I'm going to swing by the police station and look for any good bounties. That's the best way for me to earn some quick money. Until then I'm just going to laze around and listen to Lilly's singing tonight.

We had a bit of trouble tonight. A couple of lonely sailors tried to get affectionate with Lilly. Ma swatted them. They were unconscious before they hit the floor. It's a good thing that Ma doesn't carry a gun. She'd probably have shot them.

October 17, 1891

What a bust. I went by the station this morning to look for bounties. Most I saw were $50 bounties. Not a one worth my time. I don't like Bobby having more money than me but at the same time I'm not about to get a regular job. It's not that important to me. Perhaps I could win some gambling. Then again I'm not that lucky. I'll just keep my eye open for something.

I came home for an early lunch when I heard Banit telling Lilly about us sailing the other day. That gave me an idea. I saw that I can rent a racing dinghy for an afternoon. I thought I'd rent a couple and take Banit sailing. That would be a lot of fun. Lilly didn't want to go she said that she doesn't like boats. I'm sure she's just a bit scared. I won't push her, but invited her along anyways. She declined. Therefore, Banit and I donned our swimming costumes under our clothes and headed out.

At the marina the man in charge of rentals gave us basic instructions on how to sail and had us circle the marina before he'd let us out. Banit is almost a natural at this. Satisfied he waved us off. I spotted a couple of buoys and challenged Banit to a race, first one around the far buoy and back wins. She agreed and off we went. It was neck to neck down and around the buoy. She had the inside track and was able to make the turn faster. I had almost caught up with her on the way back but she won. The bet was that who ever lost must do something for the winner. Now I'm indebted to Banit. I can only imagine what she'll want to do. She said that she'll save it for later. We spent the rest of the day racing back and forth between whatever we could find. We even raced around a couple of islands. It was so much fun. I'm sure Bobby would love it too. We returned the dinghies and I asked him about buying a couple of them. He said that they make them there for the club and rent them out to raise money, they're not for sale. However he did say that if I wanted to join that they would share the plans and allow me to use their workshop to build some myself. That's not a bad idea and do have the ability to, it's just, I really don't want a long term project like that. I think I'll stick to renting them until I can buy some myself. I remembered that today is Saturday and I'd like to go to Lilly's show.

We hurried home and ate quickly. We smelled of the lake so we bathed and got dressed as fast as we could. We made it to The Pasture a few minutes after Lilly started. Ma was curious as to where we've been and so I told her. She huffed and said "You'll never get me on one of those damn things." So I guess a family outing is out, but I'll see if Bobby is interested. If nothing else, Banit and I will go out every now and then and race.

Lilly's show was great. Everyone still remembers what happened to the sailors yesterday so they were on their best behavior.

October 18, 1891

I talked with Bobby after Church about going sailing with Banit and I. For the first time, he refused. He said that he doesn't like going that far out into the water. Well, I guess that means that Banit and I will have something to do together.

We finally met the new neighbors. The most hateful damn people I've ever met. We were walking by on our way back from Church and stopped to say hello. They replied saying things that I'll not repeat. I felt like shooting them then and there. How dare they say things like that to people they don't know! Especially in front of children! I told the kids to stay away from them. Damn bears. Why'd they have to move here?

At any rate let's move on to more pleasant things, like getting teeth pulled.

Bobby ran off to play with the Warren boys. Lilly and Banit are working on some new dresses for them selves. That's the one thing besides singing that Lilly's good at. They said that they're first making one for Banit then they'll make one for Lilly. I wonder if I should get them a sewing machine. I'll let Lilly buy one if she wants one.

Ma got mad at me lazing about and put me to work. She had me build a new wood box for the stove. I took my dear sweet time with that. It turned out very nice.

That's about it for the day.

October 19, 1891

Last night after I finished writing I was talking to Ma about the stove. It's old and is getting a bit worn out. I'm going to go look for one. First though I'm going to walk the kids to school.

Damn bear! So, I may not have mentioned this. There are a lot of children that walk down my street to get to school. They've never bothered anyone. Victor the new neighbor didn't like that all these kids were walking down the street and ran out threatening them if they ever walked by his house again. I stopped him and told him that if he ever came after any of these children that I'd kill him. He started to come at me but stopped when I leveled my pistol in his face. I said "Get back inside and leave these kids alone. I WILL be watching you." He was slow about it but went back in. I told the kids that if he causes them anymore trouble to come find me. I've got a feeling that I'd just about enjoy killing him. You don't threaten children.

After this morning's incident, I went by the Police station and told them about it. Luke volunteered to patrol there this week. The Chief agreed. With that done, I had to ask Luke how he and Edna were doing. He said that things couldn't be better. They've been having dinner together nearly every night and whenever they have time off they spend it together. They've had a couple of fights but worked through it and he said that he can't imagine living without her. As he was walking me out he asked me to take him over to Dutchy so that he can get a good suit made. I think he's a bit scared of Dutchy. Dutchy is...a bit different. I said I would and that I'd come by this afternoon and take him over there.

I left and headed over to the general store. Mr. Harcourt was very happy to see me. We talked for a good long while and when he heard of the Greens he said that if that's how they're going to be then he's not going to serve them. He also said that he'll talk with the rest of the store owners in the area about them. Good, but I'm here for a different reason. I wanted to talk with him about stoves. He knows more about them than I do. He told me that the best are the new gas stoves. He said that they don't use wood but instead burn the same gas that we use in our house. According to him they don't get the house hot and there's no ash or soot to clean up either. He gave me some advertisements, so I'll take those to Ma and talk to her about it.

I went by The Pasture and found Ma in her office doing her bookkeeping. She was thankful for a break. I talked with her about the gas stoves. She was interested and wanted to try it. She told me to get the best one that fits where the old stove is. So I went home to measure the space. Without the wood box and firebox we could fit a very large stove in here. I took the measurements and headed back to Mr. Harcourt. We talked it over and he's ordering a very nice one. It's a bit expensive at $100 but it works off both coal and gas. Both would be an improvement over our wood burning one. I placed an order for one and paid Mr. Harcourt up front. Only thing I have to worry about now is having a gas line run back to the kitchen. I can't do that but I can hire it done. It should take a couple of weeks for the stove to arrive so I have plenty of time to worry about it. Should be interesting, hopefully the kitchen won't get so blasted hot in the summer.

I left and met Luke. He seemed jumpy at the idea of being so close to Dutchy but he'll get over it. Dutchy was so happy to see me. It has been a while. Dutchy wanted to know all about our trip and all the latest happenings. We were there for a long time. After about an hour we finally got around to why we came. Dutchy measured Luke and asked him many questions. Luke tried to tell Dutchy what he wanted but Dutchy stopped him saying, "You do not know vat you vant. I know vat you vant. You leave it to me and don't vorry your pretty head." Reminds me of the first time he made one for me. Luke was a bit surprised at the price. Dutchy is expensive but his work can't be beat. We were just about finished when Dutchy jumped up "Ahh! I know just vat to do. Don't vorry you'll love it." That's always a good sign. Dutchy always comes up with something amazing when he's inspired like that. He wrote us a note and told us to go down the street to the haberdashery and get what was on the note. He said come back on Friday and he'll be ready. It was a bit difficult to get away from him. He started to hang onto Luke until I told him that Luke's too young and too spoken for, for those antics. He pouted a bit saying, "All ze pretty boys are all taken, except you my dear Flint." I...ran. I'm not joking either. I ran full speed away. Luke was a bit upset but followed me anyways. We went by the haberdashery and handed them the note. They set Luke up with a new derby and even got him a nice pair of shoes. Surprisingly, they weren't that expensive. We left there and laughed about Dutchy. I told him to not take anything Dutchy says seriously unless he starts hugging on you. We had a good laugh and talked before we went our ways.

Today was a long day. Lilly was excited to hear about us getting a new stove, but that's about the only notable thing that happened this evening.

October 20, 1891

Luke was on patrol this morning making sure to be near the Green's house. Victor came out and made a show about being tough when Luke came by. He backed away when I came out. There wasn't any trouble after that.

Today I thought that I should find a plumber to come by and run a gas line. One came highly recommended so I spoke with him. He agreed to come by and take a look. I told him what stove I ordered and where we were placing it. He said that he's never worked with that particular stove so he doesn't know where the gas line is on it. He said that the best thing to do would be to wait until the stove arrives and then he'll be able to measure exactly where the line needs to be, but he's looking forward to it. He's wanted to install one in his house but wanted to see one first. I told him when it's supposed to arrive and that I'll come get him when it does. He thanked me and went to his next job.

I spent the afternoon lounging around with Banit. Since she got what she wanted she's not teasing me anymore. That's when Lilly came in. She was furious! Bobby was mad too. She said that Victor made all kinds of rude gestures to her and any other girl that walked by. He even called one of her classmates a slut. She wouldn't say the word aloud but whispered it to me. That did it! I was going to kill him. I grabbed my shotgun and stormed out the door. I saw Victor standing outside. I yelled at him, "VICTOR! I'm coming for you, you BASTARD!" He hid inside and threatened me from behind his door. "Victor! You coward! Get your ass out here!" I was so mad I wasn't thinking. I leveled the shotgun and blasted the door with both barrels. There was hardly anything left after the buckshot tore through it. He fell dead, nearly cut in half. Luke saw this and had no choice but to arrest me.

As you can probably guess I'm in jail now, again. I'm alone in here for now. I have my trial tomorrow. The judge wants to get this over with quickly.

October 21, 1891

Ma's mad at me. She still brought me breakfast though. She told me that I could have handled that better. I agree. I should have just threatened him again but I lost my temper. She told me something strange. Linda Green, Victor's wife. Soon after I shot Victor, burned their house down and left. That's extremely unusual. There's something going on if that's how she reacted. I'd look into but I'm just glad that she's gone too. This is the first time in a long time that killing someone didn't bother me.

At the trial, I gave my testimony as to what happened, as did Luke who witnessed it. They even questioned Lilly, and a couple of other children. They all said the same thing. That Victor threatened them and I came to defend them. The prosecutor didn't have much of a case beyond what was said and so it went to the jury. The jury was out for less than an hour and their verdict was that it was in defense of children therefore it was justifiable. Judge ordered me to pay a fine and that was it. Cost me $300. Those were very expensive shells but I think they were worth it. I would have hated for him to have hurt a child.

I was home by dinner. We didn't talk about what happened. It was a bit awkward to be completely honest. However I somehow managed to avoid actual jail time again. So that's good. No more bad neighbors, also good. They took my favorite shotgun though. I wonder if I can talk Luke into getting it back for me.

October 22, 1891

Ma, Banit and I walked the kids to school today. Linda Green really did burn her house down. I'm just glad that the neighboring houses didn't catch fire. The police were out there looking for clues about why Linda destroyed the house. All they found were a bunch of knives, many knives. Many more than what would be used in a large restaurant. I recall hearing about some murders up north involving knives. It was a series of them. I told Luke about it and he said that he'll pass it on.

I can't make any rash statements, but those murders were not solved and ended abruptly a month or so ago. That's about how long it would take for the Greens to move here considering how long they've been here. It's probably not related but there are a lot of similarities. The detectives can figure that out though.

As soon as the kids were in school, Ma headed home. She wanted to sleep more. Therefore, Banit and I spent the day on the town. We did some shopping, not that we bought anything, and more or less milled about. After lunch we were walking by a theatre and they were doing a rehearsal and they invited us in to watch. They did a full dress run of their show. I thought they did very well for as small of a troupe as they are. Banit really enjoyed it. The director asked our opinions and gave us tickets for the opening night on the 30th. We thanked him and wished them luck on their performances. Afterwards we went home to see Ma.

Ma was working really hard on her books. I think she needs to hire on a bookkeeper. Ma's good at running the place but struggles with the math that she needs for her records. I only know three bookkeeper, ones crooked, the other cheats, Cora is the last one. I don't know if she'd be willing to move down here. If I was to ask her she might get the wrong idea. I'm sure that with some proper records that The Pasture would do better than it already is. I talked with Ma about it and she asked me to contact Cora and see if she'd be willing to at least help her get the books in order. I wrote Cora a letter and ran it by the post office. It'd be best to get her here as soon as possible. All I can do it wait for a response.

When the kids came home, surprisingly they didn't go out like they normally would. Instead Bobby wanted to work on one of his drawings and Lilly wanted to finish the dress for Banit. I lounged around and did a whole lot of nothing.

October 23, 1891

You know what. Just for a change of pace I went to the park, read my book, and napped. At noon Luke and I went by Dutchy's to get his new suit. It was very impressive. Even Luke could feel the difference. Dutchy looked at Luke and said "So, vat ya tink? I know vat you vanted didn't I?" Luke was more than pleased with it. He said that he wanted another in a different pattern. Dutchy gave a smug laugh and replied, "Of course you vant anudder! I know you love it so I made you von." This one was a charcoal with a nice pinstripe. "Zis von is on me, tink of it as tanks for helping my dear Flint." Luke laughed and thanked him. He wanted to hurry and show off to Edna. He ran off and I headed home.

About the only thing I did that evening was escort Lilly to The Pasture and even then I just bought me a bottle of whiskey and enjoyed myself. Banit wanted to try some. She was curious. So I let her take a sip from my glass. She nearly fainted from it. She said that was the worst thing she's ever tasted and never wants to have it again. Good! She shouldn't drink. Hopefully I scared her away from it. Ma laughed and laughed at that. She gave Banit a soda pop instead. She did enjoy that. I think that up to now she's only had tea, water, coffee, and milk. She only drinks coffee with sugar and plenty of milk.

I can't help but notice that Lilly is dancing more and more. When she first started she was so scared she'd stand in one spot and sing. Even as she became more comfortable she wouldn't move much more than her arms. Now she's starting to walk around the stage and dance some with Joey or Alice.

Oh! That reminds me. Alice has a few fans now, much to her "delight". They are respectful and leave flowers for her at the top of the stairs. They keep their distance and also make others stay away from her. So I guess that's alright. She still won't talk to them. Speaking of Alice and dancing. I think that Joey has finally admitted defeat. Alice is an amazing dancer, much better than Joey. While Joey can keep pace for the most part, when Alice gets into the music, there's no comparison.

We had a nice relaxing night.

October 24, 1891

Banit and I went sailing again today. I really like those racing boats. There was a man at the marina that said that in the spring they have races for club members and invited us to join. He said that there's a small entry fee but the winner gets it. We just may have to. That sounds like a lot of fun.

I think that Banit made a couple of friends. There were some young women, about Banit's age, that were very impressed that she can sail. She stopped to talk with them. I let her. She needs friends her age. While they were talking I went on a walk around the docks. There are so many different types of boats. Sailboats, rowboats, paddleboats, even a couple of sculling skiffs. I like the race dinghies that we've been playing with so I think I'll keep doing that, but I'd still like something larger that I can take out with someone even if it's only Banit and I. I heard some laughing and looked over to see that Banit had tripped again. The others were kind enough to help her to her feet, but not without some playful prodding. I was walking back when I spotted a hammock. It was calling me. It belongs to the man at the rental place. He said that I can use it if I want to. It was so comfortable. I ended up napping for a while. I was awoken by Banit and her friends. She wanted to introduce them. They are a mockingbird named Grace, and a very tall wolfhound named Nessa. I asked Nessa how long she's been here as I haven't seen her before. She looked at me and didn't say anything for minute and sweetly said, "Oh, I've been here all day." She strikes me as being a bit...slow. Grace said that she's just very laid back and so it takes her a bit to respond. They seem like nice girls. Banit wanted to invite them over for dinner. I obliged and we headed to the house.

Lilly and Bobby were still home, so Banit introduced her new friends to Lilly. Nessa leaned in and looked Lilly in the eye. This made her nervous and she nearly jumped out of her skin when Nessa grabbed her, picked her up and hugged her saying, "She's just the cutest thing!" Grace jumped up and told Nessa to put her down that that's not appropriate. Nessa gave a sound that sounded like a "Huh?" Grace quickly said, "Put her down, PUT HER DOWN!" Nessa slowly and carefully put Lilly down who was visibly shaken and thoroughly confused. Grace told Nessa to apologize but she just smiled sweetly. I couldn't help but laugh it was so funny! Lilly called Bobby down. I think she was hoping that Nessa would do the same to him. Bobby came over and introduced himself. Lilly and I watched Nessa intently. She slowly leaned down again but she didn't pick him up, she just hugged him while saying how darling he is. Lilly puffed her cheeks and made her angry sounds. That was enough for me.

Lilly and I talked with Grace and Nessa while Banit bathed. She got a bit wet out there and smelled like the lake. Nessa didn't talk much but instead found a piece of paper and started folding it. Bobby watched her and was very surprised to see that she made a frog, and it jumped! Heck, I've never seen anything like that. Nessa isn't a dull as I thought she was. Banit finally made her way down and so Lilly was able to go make dinner. I left Banit to talk with her friends and help Lilly. Dinner was nice. Grace was surprised to learn that Lilly sings at Ma's saloon. She started to ask about it but I told her that Lilly only sings on Friday and Saturday nights and only until bedtime. We talked until it was time for Lilly to leave. Bobby was going to Charlie's for the night. That left Banit and I and her new friends there. We talked until late and then we walked Grace and Nessa home. We made it back just before Lilly did. Banit was happy to have her own friends. I am too. They seem like good girls, and that Nessa is...something. I can't quite find the words to describe her.

We called it a night after that. I can't help thinking that I'm blessed to be a part of this family.
