Chapter 9

I reached Lucian's cave in a matter of minutes, panting heavily from my run up the mountain but not feeling at all that fatigued. Thankfully it seemed Lucian's training had increased my physical endurance as well.

I turned into the cave entrance, noticing the fire was out as there was no glow from within, and called out while stepping forward.

"Axel you her-ah!" I gasped out as I hit my head on the ceiling of the cave entrance, my paw clasping onto my head where I hit it. I forget that my new height now made me taller and I had to stoop down like Lucian did to get inside.

"Ruli?" I heard Axel's voice answer me but as I removed my paw it was not the Eevee I was expecting to see who owned the voice. Before me, standing half out of the small yellow tent still posted up in the cave was an Umbreon, the yellow rings on his body glowing slightly in the darkness of the cave and his red eyes seemed to glow as well.

He stared at me a moment in confusion to my new form, but when he saw the scarf still wrapped around my neck his ears flattened back as he ran up to me and jumped to tackle me. I caught him and crashed to the ground, grunting from the impact.

"Ruli! It is you! I was so worried!" I felt him start nuzzling into my chest fur happily, just off to the side the new spike I had there. I felt wetness seeping into my fur and I realized he had been crying heavily before I got here.

"Have you been here the whole time?" I asked him quickly and he shook his head rapidly.

"I've only been here the last half hour or so." He explained, "I came here with a group of Eeveelutions who are looking for you but I snuck off to come to this cave and see if you were here. When you still didn't seem to be back though I..." I sniffled softly and buried his face in my fur again. "I was just so worried..."

"It's okay..." I said softly and held him tightly. I wanted to find out more about what he did while I had been training but the more pressing matter was here.

"What's going on?" I asked him after a few moments of holding him.

"The Towers..." He sniffled slightly still but tried to compose himself, stepping off of me and shaking himself a bit to calm his nerves, "Someone attacked the Jolteon Tower in the Bad Lands and..." He choked on his words and looked down at the ground, "Most of the clan was destroyed..."

"What?" I gasped and shook my head, "Destroyed?"

"There were only fifteen survivors out of the dozens that lived there..." Axel said sadly. "Even young Eevees and...my parents...are dead..."

I whined out softly and felt my ears fold back on instinct.

"What about..." I gulped, "The mirror?"

Axel shook his head, "We don't know...it's gone. The attacker took it."

"They took it?" I questioned and he nodded.

"Yeah, they didn't seem to destroy it, they just took it. It was days after the attack that the first survivors managed to reach a settlement to notify everyone. There's no trace of where they might have taken it, but no shards of glass or anything so it doesn't seem like they broke it." He shivered and shook his head, the rings pulsing on his head and ears a moment, "After that the Espeons launched an investigation and Chora happened to mention you visiting and how odd it had been. Somehow the Espeons have linked you to the attackers and they tracked you to the coast town. Pangoro and Psy refused to tell them anything, but Infernape told them everything he knew and now Pangoro and Psy have been arrested as traitors." Axel growled in anger and I felt a bit of my own rage flare at Infernape's jealousy and attitude. "When we came here the Elder said that Lucian had taken you off somewhere and they've been looking for two days now around the mountains. I only just now got the opportunity to sneak off to come here...Where have you been? When did you evolve?" He asked me now as he nuzzled into me once more.

"We've been down in the forests below the mountains training. I just now evolved..." I said softly, still stunned. "Xio'en came down into the forests and he found me and warned me that the Eeveelutions were looking for a Riolu...but he said two Towers have been attacked not just one."

Axel nodded, "After the Jolteon Tower was attacked and mirror stolen, someone tried to attack the Flareon Tower as well...but the Flareons managed to hold that attacker off."

I sighed thankfully, but worry still flooded me. "That doesn't make sense though...I thought they wanted to destroy the mirrors not take them. What pokémon were they?"

Axel shook his head, "No one can identify the species, it's not one usually seen on this continent. No one knows what's going on...you seem to be the only lead the Espeons have picked up and they are furious...we need to hide..."

"Hide?" I shook my head back at him, "We have to come clean...I'm not here to harm the mirrors, if anything I want to protect them and-"

"The Espeons have given orders to kill you on sight!" Axel shouted at me and I jumped. "They're not going to want to listen to you. Psy tried to stave their orders but he was only one pokémon and they didn't listen. I've tried to say the same thing but they started threatening me as a traitor too..." He shivered and looked at me worriedly, "All hells broken loose in the Eeveelution camps...they've evacuated all the child Eevee and all the camps on are high alert."

"When did this all happen?"

"About a week after you left with Lucian." Axel said, "I found the Eeveelutions that were surveying the mountains just like he said, and got them to teleport me to the Umbreon camp where I became one. I was trying to find a way and a good time to sneak off when I was shoved into all this once the Jolteons managed to alert everyone. When I found out they were implicating you..." He shook his head and looked down at the ground again, "They won't listen, we need to hide..."

I looked at him and I tried to think, wondering what to do in all this craziness. Then something came to mind, "I think I might have an idea on how to try and fix this...You think we can get the leader of the Espeons alone?"

Axel tilted his head, "She's near here right now leading the search for you...why?"

"Don't worry, I want to talk to her."

"But they're looking everywhere for you and-" I held up my finger and wagged it as I grinned.

"They are looking for a Riolu."

Axel blinked at me and he understood suddenly, "I get it...do you really think you can get her to understand you?"

"I hope so, but I would rather try than hide, do you agree?" I asked him and he instantly was nodding.

"Yes, let's try."

So it was that, with my scarf hidden inside my pack as Axel told me they knew I would be wearing one, that we entered the Lucario clan where Axel stated the Espeon Elder was leading the search for me. There were several Eeveelutions in the camp right now, from all the various evolutions, questioning those around us. Having Axel with me seemed to deter them from stopping us as we walked through.

We were both nervous of being found out, but it seemed my new form was the most effective disguise I could've hoped for. Without the scarf on I was just another normal Lucario that as far as the Eeveelutions were concerned just lived here.

We approached a cave that had one of each of the Eeveelutions except Espeon standing in front of it, one of which I instantly recognized as Chora.

"Chora." Axel spoke out to the group as we approached, "Where is Epa?"

"She is within this cave..." Chora answered in confusion a moment, "Who is this you have with you Axel?"

"He has information about Ruli." Axel answered. We had carefully planned out what we would say to get us to the Elder. "But he is worried about being implicated himself...he wants to speak with her alone..."

"That's not possible." A young looking Flareon growled in the group. "He speaks with one of us he speaks with all of us, this is not a time to not share information."

I shook my head, "I'm sorry...but I won't say what I know unless I'm only with her and Axel."

They all glared at me then stared back and forth with each other, before a voice called out from within the cave. "Go about your duties, let him in." It was an oddly soothing and calm voice, but the tone commanded respect. It seemed that the Espeon Elder was in fact the leader of all the Eeveelutions.

The Eeveelutions stared at the cave then back to each other again, then reluctantly they separated and left us alone, joining the bigger groups before they all began dispersing and running away. I wondered what they were doing when the voice from inside the cave called again.

"Come in before I change my mind." There was a tone of threat in the voice this time and I jumped and walked forward, as Axel trotted in behind me.

Inside there was a simple a simple bed of hay and I blinked in surprise at what I saw. Axel had told me that she was very old, but I didn't expect that she would look it this much. Her fur was covered in gray spots, the pink that remained very faded. She kept her eyes closed but turned her face to us as we entered.

"You...are either very foolish...or very brave." She growled at us both and I gulped.

"So...you already know?"

"The scarf is in your backpack...I've granted your wish to speak with me alone, so tell me why I shouldn't destroy your mind right now." She growled and I folded my ears back, Axel doing the same and I heard him whine beside me. We hadn't really expected to be found out that quickly, but I figured it was no real surprise. Epa was very strong in psychic power, it was probably no problem for her to find out who I was by searching my thoughts and memories.

"Please..." I started and I knelt down to one knee, staring at the ground "I don't want to fight...if I must I will surrender...but I implore on you..." I looked up at her then and held my gaze, "Don't hurt Axel."

She stared at me momentarily before speaking, "You come before me to implore that I not hurt the one that betrayed us?"

"He did not betray you." I returned, "I am not who you think I am."

"It's true Elder..." Axel whined softly but very quietly. "Psy told us all the truth."

"His truth is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in all my breathing moments." Epa said lightly, "Humans invading in the bodies of pokémon? It's insane."

"Search my memories if you must." I told her back and I breathed in deep as she glared at me. "It's...It's true...I may be a human..." I looked down a moment and stared at my own paws. "But I don't remember any of it. I don't remember even being sent here. I-"

The red gem on the Elder's forehead glowed bright and I felt myself get gripped up into the air suddenly, interrupting my words. Her eyes opened, glowing bright white and blue.

"Being human alone deserves you of death!" I felt the force focus at my chest and stomach and send me flying backwards to impact against the rock wall of the cave. I caught myself as I fell down to the ground on my hands and knees. My pack's top flew open during my flight and the scarf fluttered out to land on the rocky ground in front of me. I felt the force focus around me still and begin to lift me up once more but suddenly felt it vanish as Axel stomped down in front of me.

"Ruli has only ever been Ruli and nothing more!" Axel shouted out, his rings glowing bright yellow as a dark purple aura enveloped us both.

"You dare protect him!" Epa shouted back at him, "Consider yourself dead to us all Prince Axel, and I'll destroy you along with this invader." She threatened and banished him then and there. I coughed as I slowly picked myself up.

Axel's new power as an Umbreon seemed to counteract those of Epa's as he was a dark type. I was thankful he already knew how to use it as I took hold of my scarf and I began wrapping it around my neck, then flinging the remaining length behind me. I felt it brush just above my tail as I stared at Epa from behind Axel. She apparently really was not going to listen to me.

I bowed, putting my paw on my chest spike, just as I had been told was the formal way to do so as a Lucario. Epa paused briefly, confused, and I said while bowing, "I am sorry...I don't want this to happen. I want to stop them. I don't want them to destroy this world." I looked up then, smiling a moment. I tilted my head, thinking about the way Axel had done the same so cutely a month ago to me when he confessed his feelings to me.

"I...I like being a pokémon. I want to stay as one...I want..." I sighed and chuckled, "I want to be with Axel..." I said finally and his ears twitched as he heard me, but the Espeon in front of us did not make any sign that she was interested in what I said.

"You are doomed..." She growled at us both, "If I could move I would strike you both physically but as it is..." She stared us both down for a few long moments, staring into my eyes then for several more before she sighed heavily, looking down at the ground in front of her. "I am too old...I granted you audience as I was curious about your kind and wanted to hear what you had to say in your defense. Either way I was going to destroy you...but..." She looked back up at us, her eyes again closed and the gem no longer glowing. Axel shuffled in surprise, eventually relaxing and his rings stopped glowing as the dark aura around us dissipated and Epa continued.

"I suggest you leave then before everyone returns..." She told us both calmly. "If you really want to stop them then do so...otherwise we will not rest until you are all destroyed. You are still our enemy..."

I blinked in surprise. Though her tone still was threatening, did she just agree that she believed me?

It seemed the best acknowledgment I was going to get, and so I nodded and me and Axel ran out of the cave at the same time.

"What do we do now.?" Axel asked sadly as we hid inside Lucian's cave once more. The fire within had been restarted recently but it had not been occupied when Axel and I returned. I wondered if Lucian was aware of what was going on yet, only about half a day had past since I had ran off on him. I had left in such a hurry after Elder Xio'en warned me of what was happening that I did not think about what Lucian would do when he returned and I wasn't there.

I sat staring into the flames as I tried to think about what was happening, "I'm not sure where to begin."

Epa's words were threatening and confusing. At the same time she seemed to say she half believed me and trusted me to put an end to this, but yet she still had the Eeveelutions hunting me down, and now they knew I was a Lucario instead of Riolu. Occasionally Axel would go spy on the Lucario clan from higher ledges, watching them all searching high and low still, but none of them seemed to know about Lucian's cave.

On top of it all she also banished Axel and branded him a traitor to be killed on sight along with me.

I growled in frustration and clenched my paws into fists, "This situation is a bunch of nonsense. She says she believes me but at the same time will still hunt me down? Where does that make sense?"

"She can't ignore her own laws..." Axel said calmly, apparently more understanding of why his Elder acted the way she did, "They defend this world from humans...the fact that you may be one demands they kill you even if she thinks you are friendly. Letting you meet with her alone in of itself was breaking several laws, but she probably told them she did not know until you revealed yourself to her..."

I sighed and nodded. "Yeah and she then told them all that now I was a Lucario..." That in of itself wouldn't implement me much, but I was wearing my scarf still.

"You should take off the scarf again." Axel said then, voicing my thoughts.

I shook my head, "There's no point in hiding now." I told him, "They'd search any Lucario's belongings to see if they have the scarf now and I won't leave it behind..."

Axel merely nodded in understanding as we both stared into the flames of the fire, thinking deeply. Neither of us knew what to do now. We had entire clan's hunting us down, our only allies were Psy and Pangoro and they were being detained. Lucian was currently gone and I didn't know if he would return.

"We need allies of some kind." I stated plainly, "Someone that believes us and will protect us from the Eeveelutions while we search for the other invaders."

"But who?" Axel questioned with a whine and I suddenly remembered. There was someone who trusted me, because she too had been able to tell what I was.

"I think I know the perfect clan..."

Three days later Axel and I were sneaking through the brush of the forests close to the Leafeon Tower we had visited weeks before. It was simple to travel here at least, hiding in the forests. We did not encounter any search parties and the Eeveelutions seemed to still think I was hiding somewhere in the mountains with Lucian so there was not much out here trying to find us.

"How are you so sure that she won't try to harm us?" Axel hissed at me for the hundredth time as we tried to remain hidden from the detection of the Leafeons.

"I think she knew what I was." I told him again in return for the hundredth time as well, "She's ageless though, she knew better than to assume I was evil." I shook my head as I stopped to lean against a tree and sat down against it.

"I just don't know how to find her or get her attention without the Leafeons getting wind as well. How do you attract ghost types?"

"I can help you with that." A sudden voice said I we both jumped in surprise as someone exited their own hiding place.

"Skitty?" I asked in surprise as I saw the small pink cat like pokémon approach from her bush carefully.

"I thought it was you when I heard your voice." She said lightly, "Are you really him?"

I nodded and tilted my head a bit, confused. "Yeah it's me..."

"And...is it true what they're all saying?" She asked, shivering, "You're a human?"

I blinked in surprise, so they were broadcasting it all over huh? "Yeah...it's true...at least I think I may be."

She took a few steps back then and I saw she was about to run away, "Wait please!" I barked and she meowed in fright, crouching down and shivering in place. I backed off and said lightly, "Don't run. If you can find Mistress Chandelure then please help us. I want to stop the other humans."

"Please Skitty." Axel pleaded next to me, the cat pokémon stared at us both and she eventually calmed down, standing back up.

"I..." She started and her tail flagged up high, "I don't believe that someone evil would've protected me so selflessly that day..." She said and I smiled softly as she spoke about the day the possessed pokémon were attacking her and we had stepped in to safe her.

She walked around me and past me as she kept speaking, "They're looking for you everywhere they can, always on high alert. The Leafeons I mean." She explained as I tilted my head in confusion. "No one's been able to even step foot on the path to the Tower without getting interrogated."

She stopped and looked back at us. "Wait here and remain as quiet as possible. I will find Mistress Chandelure and bring her to you..."

"Thank you Skitty." I said and smiled at her. She gave me another smile and then dashed off in the bush, her footsteps soon fading as she got far enough away.
